Effectiveness Of Electrosynthesized Hydrogen Peroxide In Urease Inactivation For Stabilization Of Source-Separated Urine To Recover Urea, Brooke E. Covert Aug 2025

Effectiveness Of Electrosynthesized Hydrogen Peroxide In Urease Inactivation For Stabilization Of Source-Separated Urine To Recover Urea, Brooke E. Covert

All Theses

The practice of separating urine at a building scale, rather than mixing with domestic wastewater to be treated at water resource recovery facilities, allows for concentrated urine to be directly treated with the aim of resource recovery. However, source separation and treatment present challenges during separation, storage, and transport. This study evaluated the use of hydrogen peroxide-producing electrochemical cells, which represent a technology that uses electricity as an input, to stabilize urine through cathodically produced peroxide to enable downstream water and nutrient recovery. The electrochemical cells have been previously shown to stabilize urine with electrochemically produced peroxide as an effective …

Mammal Use Of Crossing Structures On Highways In The Southern Blue Ridge Mountains, Chloe E. Horton Aug 2025

Mammal Use Of Crossing Structures On Highways In The Southern Blue Ridge Mountains, Chloe E. Horton

All Theses

Road networks are a major driver of habitat fragmentation and wildlife mortality. Wildlife crossing structures (WCS) are a common mitigation strategy with the goal of maintaining landscape connectivity, reducing wildlife-vehicle collisions, and facilitating safe passage across highways. Most research on WCS prioritize large ungulates or carnivores, leaving potential gaps in our understanding of how diverse mammalian communities interact with these features. We investigated spatial, temporal, and behavioral patterns of small-, medium-, and large-bodied mammals using WCS in the southern Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. Using remote camera data from structures on I-40 and I-26 collected from 2018 …

What Drives Burnout? A Cross-Wave Study Of Work Schedule Justice, Work Schedule Characteristics, And Demographic Predictors, Zara Sedghi Aug 2025

What Drives Burnout? A Cross-Wave Study Of Work Schedule Justice, Work Schedule Characteristics, And Demographic Predictors, Zara Sedghi

All Theses

Burnout is a critical concern in modern workplaces, especially for employees with demanding or irregular schedules. While prior research has shown that non-standard scheduling practices can contribute to emotional exhaustion, less is known about how perceptions of fairness in scheduling influence burnout over time. Drawing on the Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) model, WSC is conceptualized as a job demand, while WSJ is treated as a job resource. This study investigates the effects of structural features of an employee’s work schedule, such as working evening shifts, night shifts, weekends, extended hours, or overtime (referred to here as Work Schedule Characteristics (WSC)) and …

Expandable Tissue Engineered Living Pulmonary Heart Valve For Pediatric Patients, David Podolsky Aug 2025

Expandable Tissue Engineered Living Pulmonary Heart Valve For Pediatric Patients, David Podolsky

All Theses

Cardiovascular disease is an extremely deadly disease that affects people throughout the world. It is the leading cause of death worldwide, affecting over a quarter of the population.1 Some forms of cardiovascular disease directly affect the heart valves and their function. Surgery or a replacement device are the most common current treatment options. These treatments are effective in addressing heart valve diseases in adults, but they are less effective when used for children patients. This creates a need to develop a solution for the child population.

Congenital heart defects are structural abnormalities that often lead to infant mortality.2,3 Pulmonary valves, …

Direct Photopatterning Of Quantum Dots Via Thiol-Yne Click Chemistry, Nicholas Langer, Ofer Kedem Aug 2025

Direct Photopatterning Of Quantum Dots Via Thiol-Yne Click Chemistry, Nicholas Langer, Ofer Kedem

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Functional nanomaterials are revolutionizing electronic devices such as displays and photovoltaics, yet existing semiconductor manufacturing methods struggle to adapt to the unique properties of nanoparticles. In particular, quantum dots (QDs) display density-dependent properties such as tunable energy transfer, yet current preferred methods of producing QD patterns lack control over the density of QDs deposited in specific locations on a surface. Here, we present a photochemical method to generate QD patterns directly from solution onto a functionalized surface, which enables density control. The overall dose of light used in the pattern (visible or UV) determines the surface density of deposited QDs …

Practical Keyword Private Information Retrieval From Key-To-Index Mappings, Meng Hao, Weiran Liu, Liqiang Peng, Cong Zhang, Pengfei Wu, Lei Zhang, Hongwei Li, Deng, Robert H.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper introduces practical schemes for keyword Private Information Retrieval (keyword PIR), enabling private queries on public databases using keywords. Unlike standard indexbased PIR, keyword PIR presents greater challenges, since the query’s position within the database is unknown and the domain of keywords is vast. Our key insight is to construct an efficient and compact key-to-index mapping, thereby reducing the keyword PIR problem to standard PIR. To achieve this, we propose three constructions incorporating several new techniques. The high-level approach involves (1) encoding the server’s key-value database into an indexable database with a key-to-index mapping and (2) invoking standard PIR …

Think Both Ways: Teacher-Student Bidirectional Reasoning Enhances Mcq Generation And Distractor Quality, Yimiao Qiu, Yang Deng, Quanming Yao, Zhimeng Zhang, Zhiang Dong, Chang Yao, Jingyuan Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Generating high-quality Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) remains challenging for educational tools due to the need for contextual relevance and plausible distractors. Existing methods still struggle with these dual requirements, leading to questions that lack depth and distractors that are either too obvious or irrelevant. In this paper, we propose BiFlow, a novel framework that integrates bidirectional reasoning perspectives: teacher reasoning generates contextually relevant questions and plausible distractors, while student reasoning evaluates question clarity and the misleading nature of the distractors. To further enhance reasoning, we introduce PathFinder, a mechanism that employs breadth-first search and Chainof-Thought (CoT) strategies to explore diverse …

What Is The Distribution Of National Historical Parks?, Randall K. Johnson

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

In an increasingly polarized nation, which no longer can reach any consensus about what is meant by the term “common good,” it might be wise to extend additional protections to national monuments from executive branch interference. But prior to doing so, the U.S. Congress may want to undertake some additional research work. Such research could build on the existing charge of the National Park Service as well as other interested parties. By doing so, Congress gains insight into whether and how this federal legislature should make greater use of the national historical parks designations.

This article explains, at least in …

Trust Across Difference In Radical Social Movement Organizations: The Case Of The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Kerstin Miller Aug 2025

Trust Across Difference In Radical Social Movement Organizations: The Case Of The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Kerstin Miller

Master's Theses

Social movement literature does not properly address trust between activists as a foundation of social movement organizations. This thesis aims to fill that gap by examining how trust within the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, a radical civil rights organization in the sixties, was built and broken over the course of the decade. I drew on first-hand accounts written by SNCC activists to find patterns in how they thought about trust building and trust breaking in their own organization. I found that trust was built primarily through sustained interaction between activists, and that trust in the organization led to activists being …

The Upcoming Moral Crisis In Primitive Artificial Intelligence, Justin E. Edens Aug 2025

The Upcoming Moral Crisis In Primitive Artificial Intelligence, Justin E. Edens

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As we continue to develop artificially intelligent systems, there is an increasingly high chance that we will develop a system that is both conscious and capable of suffering. Furthermore, it is likely that the development of this conscious machine will be entirely unintentional. While this machine will have moral status, identifying it will be extremely difficult, leading to it being treated the same as its inert predecessors. For these reasons I believe that a crisis in ethics is looming. This paper aims to argue that it is possible for a machine to have moral status, that the first such machine …

Using Interpersonal Motives To Identify Latent Profiles Of Borderline Personality Pathology: Implications For An Overcontrolled Style Of Bpd, Regina Schreiber

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is conceptualized as a disorder of undercontrol (i.e., behaviorally impulsive, emotionally expressive), with affective, interpersonal, and identity instability. BPD related impairment is high, yet diagnostic accuracy remains a problem for individuals who present with greater overcontrol (i.e., behavioral inhibition, expressive suppression), which occurs in some BPD subtypes. The current study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to expand on prior research by identifying latent profiles based on interpersonal motives for agency and relatedness, desire for predictability, perceived dependency, and self-efficacy in a sample of people with elevated BPD features (n = 136). Individual differences in overcontrol, undercontrol, …

Utilizing The Horseshoe Prior In Exploratory Factor Analysis And Gaussian Graphical Networks, James Thomas Roddy Aug 2025

Utilizing The Horseshoe Prior In Exploratory Factor Analysis And Gaussian Graphical Networks, James Thomas Roddy

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

High-dimensional data analysis frequently involves extracting meaningful structure from noisy, sparse signals. In recent years, Bayesian shrinkage priors—particularly global-local shrinkage priors—have emerged as powerful tools for inducing sparsity while preserving signal fidelity. Among these, the Horseshoe prior has gained notable attention for its capacity to simultaneously shrink irrelevant parameters and retain substantial signals. This dissertation explores the Horseshoe prior as a unified framework for sparse Bayesian inference across theory, simulation, and real-world application. The first component develops new theoretical results establishing the asymptotic Bayes optimality of the Horseshoe prior in Gaussian graphical models (GGMs). We consider sparse precision matrix estimation …

Classifying Advanced Persistent Threat Stages And Techniques Via Graph-Enhanced Network Flow Representations, Md Taef Uddin Nadim

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) are complex, stealthy attacks that involve multiple stages and many attack techniques used in each stage, making them difficult to defend against. Although many solutions can detect APTs, most of them only detect the existence of attack, but cannot produce fine-grained classification over the stage of the APT and the specific attack technique used. Some existing solutions can classify the stages of APT, but few of them provide attack technique classification, and existing work do not provide interpretability for the classification or countermeasures for the attack. In this thesis work, we propose a solution named CAPTure, …
