Photophysical Properties Of Sustainably Derived Carbon Dots, Katherine Facteau Sep 2025

Photophysical Properties Of Sustainably Derived Carbon Dots, Katherine Facteau

Master's Theses and Capstones

Exposure to ultraviolet radiation poses risks to human health while also damaging materials.Materials like plastics and wood experience degradation and discoloration when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, while humans can experience premature aging and wrinkling, skin cancer, and eye damage.1–4 Unfortunately, current UV protective materials in use today have several drawbacks including rapid degradation, toxicity and oxidative damage. These issues have made the development of non-toxic alternative UV filters highly sought after. Carbon dots are a group of carbon-based nanoparticles, first discovered in 2004 by Scrivens and coworkers while purifying single-walled nanotubes, then officially named in 2006. 5,6 Carbon dots …

Assessing The Application Of Mobile Light Detection And Ranging In Complex Mixed Species Forest Inventory, Hunter Thomas Moore Sep 2025

Assessing The Application Of Mobile Light Detection And Ranging In Complex Mixed Species Forest Inventory, Hunter Thomas Moore

Master's Theses and Capstones

Understanding forest dynamics relies on forest inventories that assess stand- and tree-level characteristics. Traditionally, this process involves field-based measurements of tree attributes such as diameter at breast height (DBH), height, form, and crown metrics. In recent years, the integration of remote sensing technologies, particularly Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), has expanded the spatial and temporal reach of forest inventories. LiDAR is an active remote sensing device that generates three-dimensional representations of forest environments and can be used to derive structural forest metrics. More recently, mobile LIDAR, also referred to as mobile laser scanning (MLS) has emerged as a flexible and …

Investigating The Offsets Between The Clumped Isotope Signatures Of Various Species Of Benthic Foraminifera, Ceara Hogan Yourell Sep 2025

Investigating The Offsets Between The Clumped Isotope Signatures Of Various Species Of Benthic Foraminifera, Ceara Hogan Yourell

Master's Theses and Capstones

For much of the last half century, the primary tool for reconstructing ancient ocean temperatures was the oxygen isotope paleothermometer. However, this method is fundamentally limited by its reliance on assumptions about the δ¹⁸O value of seawater, which introduces uncertainty into paleotemperature estimates. The clumped isotope paleothermometer (Δ47) offers a promising alternative by directly measuring the stochastic "clumping" of heavy isotopes (¹³C and ¹⁸O) within the carbonate lattice—a process governed solely by temperature and independent of seawater isotopic composition (Ghosh et al., 2006; Eiler, 2007). While Δ47 paleothermometry has been applied successfully in diverse contexts, including reconstructing extinct animal body …

Generative Ai Risks And Resilience: How Users Adapt To Hallucination And Privacy Challenges, Joon Soo Lim

Media Studies - All Scholarship

Purpose

This study examines two central risks affecting continued use of generative AI (GenAI)—AI hallucinations and privacy concerns—and explores how protective behaviors serve as adaptive mechanisms to mitigate these risks.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on Protection Motivation Theory, the study tests a risk-adaptive GenAI use model using survey data from 789 users recruited via a Prolific panel. Structural equation modeling is employed to analyze direct and moderating effects.

Findings

Privacy concerns negatively influence user attitudes while positively predicting both personal and system-level protective behaviors. Hallucination risk is similarly associated with negative attitudes but positively predicts information verification. Notably, only information verification significantly …

Inside Ai, Charles Duan Sep 2025

Inside Ai, Charles Duan

Contributions to Books

It is beautiful, the Mandelbrot set. In full, it resembles a horseshoe crab or a sideways Rorschach test, flecked with patterns of spikes and lobes. Zooming in at any point near its edge reveals infinite depths of swirls, reminiscent of Van Gogh’s Starry Night or an intricate paisley textile. The shape could easily hang on a wall, an example of fine abstract art. Yet the entirety of that shape can be computed by repeated application of a simple mathematical function:2 f(x) = x2 + c. Is all the beauty and complexity of the Mandelbrot set “inside” the symbols …

Combining Life Grid With Biographical Narrative Approach In Reconstructing Living Situation Of Metro Manila’S Street Dwellers, Melissa Q. Navarra, Irene Reyno, Wander Van Der Vaat Sep 2025

Combining Life Grid With Biographical Narrative Approach In Reconstructing Living Situation Of Metro Manila’S Street Dwellers, Melissa Q. Navarra, Irene Reyno, Wander Van Der Vaat

Institute of Philippine Culture (IPC)

Engaging homeless populations in biographical research is often hindered by the deep-seated distrust and trauma that characterize their lived experiences. This study introduces a methodological approach that transforms this hurdle, turning the research interview into an empowering and collaborative encounter. Using a combination of the Life History Calendar (LHC) and biographical narratives, we explored the complex life transitions of 15 individuals living on the streets and in a cemetery of Metro Manila, Philippines. The LHC served as a co-constructed visual scaffold, enabling participants with low educational attainment and histories of trauma to recall and structure their life stories with remarkable …

Sparse-Data Orbit Estimation In Low Earth Orbit Using The Markov Chain Monte Carlo Ensemble Gaussian Mixture Filter, Nicholas J. Oden Sep 2025

Sparse-Data Orbit Estimation In Low Earth Orbit Using The Markov Chain Monte Carlo Ensemble Gaussian Mixture Filter, Nicholas J. Oden

Master's Theses

The number of space objects (SOs) in low Earth orbit (LEO) continues to increase rapidly, creating challenges for the current ground-based tracking network, which cannot accommodate the projected growth in SOs. Catalog maintenance relies on frequent observations for reliable reacquisition, with Two-Line Element (TLE) sets typically generated daily to mitigate rapid error growth from poor TLE accuracy. This constraint limits the ability to track more objects with existing infrastructure. This work evaluates the Markov Chain Monte Carlo Ensemble Gaussian Mixture Filter (MCMC EnGMF), a nonlinear, non-Gaussian filter well-suited for sparse tracking scenarios where higher post-update accuracy is needed to reduce …

Non-Perturbative Aspects Of Gauge Theories Through A Complex Parametrization, Antonina Maj Sep 2025

Non-Perturbative Aspects Of Gauge Theories Through A Complex Parametrization, Antonina Maj

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation explores a complex matrix parametrization of four-dimensional non-Abelian gauge theories as a means of gaining analytical insights into (3+1)-dimensional QCD. The low-energy scale of non-Abelian gauge theories remains an elusive area of research even after decades of work. A key challenge lies in identifying physical, gauge-invariant degrees of freedom that are relevant to non-perturbative phenomena. In this dissertation we develop a complex parametrization of gauge fields on which gauge transformations act homogeneously, thereby enabling a manifestly gauge-invariant analytical formulation of the theory.

Chapter one constructs the complex gauge-invariant parametrization for gauge theories living on both complex projective space …

Collaborative Memory And Metamemory: The Impact Of Normative And Informational Motivations On Conformity, Karen Rodriguez Sep 2025

Collaborative Memory And Metamemory: The Impact Of Normative And Informational Motivations On Conformity, Karen Rodriguez

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Collaborative memory studies have typically explored the cognitive mechanisms that underlie differences between collaborative and individual memory performance. Despite the social nature of collaboration, few studies have examined the impact of social motivations on collaborative memory. When retrieving information with groups, people may not only be motivated by a desire to be accurate (i.e., informational motivations), but may also be guided by social norms (i.e., normative motivations), such as prioritizing agreeability or alignment with group members (Cialdini & Goldstein, 2004). Similarly, retrieving information with others may also prompt individuals to reflect more on their own memory processes. However, few studies …

Mitigating Melanin-Induced Bias In Pulse Oximetry: Optical, Algorithmic, Engineering, Hardware And Modeling Tools, Mckenzie Bradley, Sydnee Barrett, Ty Mckelvey, Jeremiah Carpenter, Delphine Dean

Publications

Melanin, the primary determinant of skin pigmentation, absorbs light at wavelengths that can have significant impact on the accuracy of pulse oximetry and other optical biosensing methods. This narrative review examines key factors influencing melanin-dependent pulse oximetry inaccuracies, including optical interference in transmission and reflectance modes. These inaccuracies further highlight the need for use of standardized skin tone metrics in device testing and design such as the Monk Skin Tone scale and Individual Typology Angle for performance stratification. There are several approaches in development that hope to address the errors in pulse oximetry measurements on melanin-rich skin. These include algorithmic …

Boosting Symbolic Execution For Vulnerability Detection, Haoxin Tu Sep 2025

Boosting Symbolic Execution For Vulnerability Detection, Haoxin Tu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Software systems written by humans tend to be unreliable and insecure, hence, bugs or vulnerabilities in them are inevitable. Symbolic execution has shown considerable potential in detecting diverse types of software bugs and also vulnerabilities that have severe security implications. However, existing symbolic execution engines still suffer from at least three fundamental limitations in memory modeling, path exploration, and structured input generation, which significantly impede existing engines from efficiently and effectively detecting software bugs and vulnerabilities.

The objective of this dissertation is to boost existing symbolic execution engines by designing a new memory model, two new path exploration strategies, and …

Memory-Efficient Graph Processing On Gpus: Reducing Intermediate Data Structure Overhead, Chang Ye Sep 2025

Memory-Efficient Graph Processing On Gpus: Reducing Intermediate Data Structure Overhead, Chang Ye

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The increasing scale of real-world graphs in domains such as fraud detection, community detection, and biological analysis demands high-throughput, memory-efficient graph processing solutions. GPUs offer massive parallelism for accelerating such workloads, and numerous frameworks have been developed to leverage their computational power. These frameworks primarily focus on optimizing scheduling to better align graph processing with GPU architectures. It performs well for algorithms with low memory demands, such as BFS, SSSP, and PageRank. However, for algorithms that require substantial memory, such as label propagation, and subgraph counting, the limited memory capacity of GPUs often becomes a significant bottleneck.

This dissertation addresses …

Consumption Of Negative Media Content Mediates The Association Between Levels Of Trauma Exposure And Insomnia Severity In Hispanic Young Adults, Michiyo Hirai, Laura L. Vernon Sep 2025

Consumption Of Negative Media Content Mediates The Association Between Levels Of Trauma Exposure And Insomnia Severity In Hispanic Young Adults, Michiyo Hirai, Laura L. Vernon

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

Research has shown that individuals who have experienced traumatic events are at greater risk of developing severe insomnia than those without trauma. Further, according to the stress sensitization hypothesis, victims of multiple traumas, compared to those who have experienced a single trauma, are particularly vulnerable to severe insomnia. One potential mechanism underlying the association between trauma experiences and insomnia is media exposure. Although avoidance behaviors are symptoms of posttraumatic stress, victims of traumas also demonstrate attentional bias toward threats and difficulty disengaging attention from threats. These cognitive tendencies may result in heightened vigilance to negative media content, particularly trauma-related content, …

Proposed Cloud Services Sourcing Rule: The Right Direction, Reuven Avi-Yonah, Jeffery M. Kadet, Karen Sam

Articles

This past January, in conjunction with the issuance of a final regulation (T.D. 10022) that treats income from defined cloud transactions as income from services, Treasury and the IRS released a proposed regulation (REG-107420-24) on the sourcing of that income. In 2019 a Treasury official had asked the tax community for feedback on whether specific cloud transaction sourcing rules were needed, and the preamble to a 2019 proposed regulation asked for comments on “administrable rules for sourcing income from cloud transactions in a manner consistent with sections 861 through 865.” The feedback was “split almost evenly with regard to whether …
