Understanding Output-Based Pricing Systems, Wei Cui Oct 2025

Understanding Output-Based Pricing Systems, Wei Cui

All Faculty Publications

In recent years, Canada has implemented a distinctive carbon pricing regime, known as “output-based pricing systems” (OBPS), to incentivize emission reductions for large industrial facilities. This regime has come un-der heightened scrutiny as a more general carbon tax, the federal fuel charge, was cancelled in 2025 due to political controversy. However, OBPS regimes have received no prior economic analysis; commentators have mostly criticized the weakness of the emission trading markets within them. This article argues that OBPS should be viewed as primarily implementing a carbon tax with an intensity-based exemption. OBPS further introduces emissions trading into this carbon tax regime, …

Large-scale human genetic studies implicate multiple genes that regulate protein ubiquitination in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). De novo loss-of-function mutations in the gene CULLIN3 (CUL3) are implicated in autism and intellectual disability (ID). CUL3 is an essential component of an E3 ubiquitin ligase complex required for ubiquitination of substrates, often a signal for proteasomal degradation. Homozygous deletion of Cul3 is embryonically lethal. Recent studies show heterozygous deletion of Cul3 results in phenotypes with some face validity for autism in constitutive and conditional Cul3 heterozygotes. To understand the function of Cul3 in late postnatal development and function in the brain, we …

Benchmarking Age-Gates, Katharine B. Silbaugh Oct 2025

Benchmarking Age-Gates, Katharine B. Silbaugh

Faculty Scholarship

This article examines how legal actors—particularly legislators, judges, and attorneys—invoke chronological age to justify the application of legal rules to adolescents. In doing so, they often rely on comparisons to existing “age-gates,” treating these thresholds (such as ages 18 or 21) as self-justifying reference points. Age 18, marking the legal transition from childhood to adulthood, and age 21, the former age of majority and current sales age for certain controlled substances, serve as especially powerful rhetorical anchors in age-based legal reasoning. These anchor points shape how legal actors advocate for or against particular age thresholds, often substituting analogy for substantive …

Performance Leads Governance: A Comment On Professor Tallarita’S Dual-Class Analysis, David J. Berger, Pierluigi Matera Oct 2025

Performance Leads Governance: A Comment On Professor Tallarita’S Dual-Class Analysis, David J. Berger, Pierluigi Matera

Faculty Scholarship

The rise of dual-class stock structures in corporate governance has sparked intense academic, legal, and regulatory debate. In his recent contribution, Dual-Class Contracting, Professor Tallarita persuasively challenges some contemporary interpretations of contractarian theories by showing that dual-class structures do not reflect bespoke bargaining or firm-specific negotiation, but rather result from lawyer-driven standardization, social norms, and path dependency.

Drawing on Tallarita’s empirical findings, we argue that the reality of dual-class structures extends beyond governance formality. Specifically, we contend that investor behavior is driven not by structural governance ideals, but by corporate performance and mission alignment. Companies increasingly design governance structures based …

Measuring And Mitigating Drip Pricing Overcharge: Evidence From An Online Marketplace Experiment With A Digital Shopping Assistant, Benjamin Lu, Daniel Markovits, Andrew Miller, Rory Van Loo Oct 2025

Measuring And Mitigating Drip Pricing Overcharge: Evidence From An Online Marketplace Experiment With A Digital Shopping Assistant, Benjamin Lu, Daniel Markovits, Andrew Miller, Rory Van Loo

Faculty Scholarship

We study how much drip pricing (hidden mandatory fees revealed after consumers have begun the buying process) raises prices paid for identical goods and whether an automated shopping assistant mitigates the effect. In a randomized online marketplace experiment (n = 1608) with real purchases of gift cards funded by a $15 endowment, we vary the initial and final presentation of the gift cards’ prices across 33 levels and randomly assign participants to an automated assistant that flags a lower-price identical option and links to it. Relative to transparent pricing, drip pricing increases the average price paid by up to a …

Criminal Court's Disability, Zohra Ahmed Oct 2025

Criminal Court's Disability, Zohra Ahmed

Faculty Scholarship

Do criminal courts meaningfully accommodate psychiatric disability? A review of competency proceedings across the United States suggests not. In competency to stand trial proceedings, criminal court actors offer a narrow vision of psychiatric disability that excludes many defendants. Ultimately, the institutional context of criminal court undermines even the meagre accommodations that the competency framework provides.

Competency proceedings are the constitutional accommodations available to disabled defendants if they can establish that they are unable to consult with their lawyers or if they do not have a rational or factual understanding of the proceedings against them. After a finding of incompetency, the …

De Minimis Copying: An Empirical Study, Jessica Silbey, Samantha Zyontz

Faculty Scholarship

In the internet age, the copyright de minimis defense has increased in relevance as copyright lawsuits (and IP generally) are more mainstream and infringement liability more widespread. This Article is the first empirical analysis of copyright de minimis defense cases, collecting and analyzing all such decisions since the mid-19th century. It traces the doctrine’s development over the past century and its evolution in the digital era, when copying has become even more ubiquitous but its triviality remains widely disputed. The Article’s aim is not only to map the de minimis defense to learn more about it doctrinally—asking when is copying …

Solar Power Forecasting Using Deep Learning Techniques, Fatma Abdulrahman Oct 2025

Solar Power Forecasting Using Deep Learning Techniques, Fatma Abdulrahman

Theses

The growing utilization of solar energy and other renewable energy sources has heightened the demand for a proper forecasting model that enables efficient control of the energy supply as well as grid reliability. In this work, we concentrate about the use of novel techniques in ML models, namely Deep Neural Networks (DNN) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), to try to forecast power output in a solar-powered plant using past weather and power output records. Production of solar energy is naturally volatile because it is dependent on the weather conditions and is problematic in nature when integrated into power grids. Conventional …

This manuscript documents the data rescue, digitization, and quality assurance of archival daily maximum and minimum water levels at twenty-five sites within the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The records encompass 1846 total unique years, where 915 years are newly digitized from the 1915–1985 era. The period of record for each gauge location varies from 40 to 109years (median=80 years). Quality assurance procedures and datum corrections were applied to both archival and digital records to generate a time series referenced to a common geocentric datum. Both riverine and coastal influences on mean sea level and great diurnal range are evident in the …

Predictive Gene Expression Signatures For Alzheimer's Disease Using Post-Mortem Brain Tissue, Ashley Duche, Oliver Tan, Andrius Baskys, Rachita K. Sumbria, Moom R. Roosan

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Background: Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and tau protein aggregates in the brain. These pathological features manifest in specific regions, but mechanisms rendering some areas more susceptible to early AD-related changes remain poorly understood. To address this, we developed predictive gene expression signatures to explore molecular mechanisms underlying regional vulnerability to AD pathology.

Methods: Post-mortem brain tissues from participants of the Religious Orders Study and Memory and Aging Project (ROSMAP), Mayo Clinic, and Mount Sinai Brain Bank (MSBB) were used to derive gene expression signatures from six brain regions affected at varying …

Dynamic Rewiring Of Microrna Networks In The Brainstem Autonomic Control Circuits During Hypertension Development In The Female Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat, Alison Moss, Ankita Srivastava, Lakshmi Kuttippurathu, James S. Schwaber, Rajanikanth Vadigepalli

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

We describe global microRNA (miRNA) changes in the central autonomic control circuits during the development of neurogenic hypertension. Using the female spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) and the normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WKY), we analyzed the dynamic miRNA expression changes in three brainstem regions-the nucleus of the solitary tract, caudal ventrolateral medulla, and rostral ventrolateral medulla-as a time series beginning at 8 wk of age before hypertension onset through to extended chronic hypertension. Our analysis yielded nine miRNAs that were significantly differentially regulated in all three regions between SHR and WKY over time. We collated computationally predicted gene targets of these nine …

Cocaine use disorder (CUD) lacks FDA-approved treatments, partly due to the difficulty of creating therapeutics that target behaviour-related neural circuits without disrupting signalling throughout the brain. One promising candidate for circuit-selective neuromodulation is pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP), a neuropeptide with pleiotropic behavioural actions whose signalling network spans the gut–brain axis. Here, we investigated the potential existence and function of an endogenous PACAP signalling network within the nucleus accumbens core (NAcc), which is a structure that integrates emotional, cognitive and reward processes underlying behaviour. We found that PACAP and its cognate receptor, PAC1R, are endogenously expressed in the rat NAcc …

Immigrant Selection And Global Subordination: A Critical Response To Sahar Akhtar, Alex Sager Oct 2025

Immigrant Selection And Global Subordination: A Critical Response To Sahar Akhtar, Alex Sager

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

In 1908, the Canadian government passed a law to prevent immigration from British India, making the right to immigrate conditional on completing a continuous journey from the country of origin. Hundreds of thousands of European immigrants easily met this stipulation; doing so was nearly impossible for British Indians. In April 1914, Canadian authorities in Vancouver, British Columbia detained 376 British Sikh, Muslim and Hindu subjects travelling on the Japanese steamship Komagata Maru from the Punjab. The Komagata Maru incident, as it has come to be known, reminds us of the toxic role of immigration policy in promulgating anti-Asian racism in …

Torts Mismatches, Ed Cheng, Ehud Guttel Oct 2025

Torts Mismatches, Ed Cheng, Ehud Guttel

Vanderbilt Law Review

In torts, the damages required for full compensation of the victim and optimal deterrence of the injurer are normally the same. This correspondence is perfectly natural: If the injurer fully compensates the victim, then the injurer will completely internalize his externalities. Yet sometimes full compensation and optimal deterrence do not align. A well-known example is punitive damages, in which victims are purposely overcompensated to optimally deter injurers. What the literature has failed to acknowledge is that these torts mismatcheswhen full compensation of victims and optimal deterrence of injurers are incompatibleoccur elsewhere and explain controversial and unresolved doctrinal areas of torts. …

Freer monads are a useful structure commonly used in various domains due to their expressiveness. However, a known issue with freer monads is that they are not amenable to static analysis. This paper explores freer arrows, a relatively expressive structure that is amenable to static analysis. We propose several variants of freer arrows. We conduct a case study on choreographic programming to demonstrate the usefulness of freer arrows in Haskell.

Tensions, Funding, And Sustainability: Young Feminist Organizing’S Relations With Donors And Key Stakeholders, Anel Bobadilla, Paulina Márquez, Esperanza Basurto, Natalia Tenorio, Sonia Cruz, Ricardo Regules

Adolescents and Young People

Although young feminist women are an important part of the feminist movement in Mexico, there is very little information written from their perspective about their relationship with larger organizations, foundations, and national and international donor organizations, and with key actors at the institutional level, as shown by the results of the Rapid Evidence Assessment on the panorama and impact of young feminist organizing in Mexico.

This brief highlights the complexity of the relationships between young feminist organizations (YFOs) and collectives in Mexico and foundations and donor organizations as well as government institutions, while recognizing good practices. We analyze and synthesize …

Improving The Accessibility Of Speech For Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Individuals Through Affective Captions, Caluã De Lacerda Pataca Oct 2025

Improving The Accessibility Of Speech For Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Individuals Through Affective Captions, Caluã De Lacerda Pataca

Theses

Captions have traditionally served as a bridge between the spoken word and its written representation, helping make speech accessible to Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) individuals. It is worth considering, however, how much from speech is left out by this ’bridging’ between sound and visuals. This dissertation describes a research project that has, over six studies, looked at this very issue. We first examined whether there is an issue here at all. What does the experience of DHH individuals with captioning systems tell us about these systems’ shortcomings? For one, we found, captions are felt as monotonous and ambiguous. While communication …

Importance Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent and associated with heightened error monitoring, the detection of one’s mistakes. However, error monitoring, anxiety, and their associations change throughout adolescence, limiting the ability to estimate future anxiety trajectories during this period.

Objective To ascertain whether measures of error monitoring obtained via the integration of electroencephalogram (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) improve estimations of future anxiety compared with EEG or fMRI alone, in adolescents with or without a history of behaviorally inhibited temperament.

Design, Setting, and Participants This longitudinal cohort study was conducted at a university research laboratory and government research hospital. …

UNLABELLED: Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) remains one of the most clinically aggressive and poorly characterized soft-tissue sarcoma subtypes. To uncover distinctive molecular traits for UPS, a multiomics analysis of UPS compared with leiomyosarcoma (LMS) and liposarcoma (LPS) was performed. Transcriptomic profiling revealed that UPS exhibits overexpression of genes encoding succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) subunits, particularly SDHB, SDHC, and SDHD, distinguishing it from LMS and dedifferentiated LPS. This finding was validated using The Cancer Genome Atlas Sarcoma dataset. High SDHB expression in UPS was significantly associated with shorter overall survival, shorter recurrence-free survival, and shorter overall survival from the date of first …

Spatial Multiomics Of Acute Myocardial Infarction Reveals Immune Cell Infiltration Through The Endocardium, Florian Wünnemann, Junedh M Amrute, Kory J Lavine, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Myocardial infarction (MI) continues to be a leading cause of death worldwide. Even though it is well established that the complex interplay between different cell types determines the overall healing response after MI, the precise changes in the tissue architecture are still poorly understood. In this study, we generated an integrative cellular map of the acute phase after murine MI using a combination of imaging-based transcriptomics (Molecular Cartography) and antibody-based highly multiplexed imaging (Sequential Immunofluorescence). This enabled us to evaluate cell type compositions and changes at subcellular resolution over time. We observed the recruitment of leukocytes to the infarcted heart …

Redefining Law In China, Zeming Liu, Benjamin L. Liebman

Faculty Scholarship

Although there is a growing body of literature on the role of law under authoritarian regimes, scholars have paid little attention to authoritarian legal ideology or conceptions of legality in contemporary authoritarian states. This Article presents the first in-depth study of the Chinese Communist Party’s recent novel attempt to introduce and implement an official legal ideology under the banner of “Xi Jinping’s Thought on the Rule of Law,” one which aims both to create a definitive theory of law and to offer a guide to China’s legal development. We examine four principal components of this legal ideology: the theoretical definition …

Group 3 (G3) medulloblastoma constitutes the most aggressive molecular subgroup, and nearly all patients present with metastases upon recurrence. Treatment for newly diagnosed medulloblastoma relies on a combination of maximal safe surgical resection, followed by chemotherapy and ionizing radiation, and no therapies have been shown to confer a survival benefit at the time of recurrence. Given the limited therapeutic options available for patients with medulloblastoma, especially at recurrence, and the incomplete understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying resistance to treatment, we sought to uncover actionable targets and biomarkers that could help refine patient selection and treatment of newly diagnosed medulloblastoma …
