Information-Bottleneck Driven Binary Neural Network For Change Detection, Kaijie Yin, Zhiyuan Zhang, Shu Kong, Tian Gao, Cheng-Zhong Xu, Hui Kong
Information-Bottleneck Driven Binary Neural Network For Change Detection, Kaijie Yin, Zhiyuan Zhang, Shu Kong, Tian Gao, Cheng-Zhong Xu, Hui Kong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we propose Binarized Change Detection (BiCD), the first binary neural network (BNN) designed specifically for change detection. Conventional network binarization approaches, which directly quantize both weights and activations in change detection models, severely limit the network's ability to represent input data and distinguish between changed and unchanged regions. This results in significantly lower detection accuracy compared to real-valued networks. To overcome these challenges, BiCD enhances both the representational power and feature separability of BNNs, improving detection performance. Specifically, we introduce an auxiliary objective based on the Information Bottleneck (IB) principle, guiding the encoder to retain essential input …
Creative Development And The Repertory Grid Method: Investigating How A Team Of Theater Teaching Artists Describe And Assess The Formative Creative Skills And Dispositions Of Students, Mark Andrew Onuscheck
Creative Development And The Repertory Grid Method: Investigating How A Team Of Theater Teaching Artists Describe And Assess The Formative Creative Skills And Dispositions Of Students, Mark Andrew Onuscheck
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
This mixed-methods study explores how a team of theater teaching artists describes and assesses the formative creative skills and dispositions of students participating in an after-school theater arts program, and it explores how repertory grid methods may support curricular, instructional, assessment, and feedback practices within such programs. Rooted in personal construct theory and curriculum studies, this research investigates how creative development—often viewed as elusive—is revealed through educators’ language, perceptions, and evaluative choices. Using repertory grid interviewing and statistical rating protocols, the study identifies how participating teaching artists articulate the “language of learning” related to creative performance, uncovering 68 formative creative …

The relationship between lesion absorbed dose (AD) and response in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer undergoing [177Lu]Lu-PSMA-617 radiopharmaceutical therapy (RPT) remains poorly understood. The objective of this work was to investigate the AD-response relationship at both the patient and lesion levels.
Methods: Sixty-five patients underwent serial SPECT/CT imaging after receiving 7.31 ± 0.27 GBq of [177Lu]Lu-PSMA-617. Single-time-point (STP) (Hänscheid approximation at 72 h) and multiple-time-point voxelwise dosimetry were performed. Patient response was evaluated by changes in serum prostate-specific antigen level before and after cycle 1 of RPT. The response of individual lesions was evaluated by the change in the …

Background: Callous-unemotional (CU) traits during adolescence, for example, shallow affect or lack of remorse, have been shown to be a risk marker for antisocial behavior. Only a few studies have investigated structural brain alterations underlying CU traits, and findings are inconclusive. The study examines CU symptomatology and gray matter volume (GMV) associations.
Methods: Structural brain MRI data were collected from a sample of 578 adolescents (60% male) with a mean age of 14.85 years (SD = 2.30; range = 10-19 years). CU traits were indexed via the Inventory for Callous Unemotional Traits (ICU). Region-wise volumetric parameters were obtained following parcellation …

Trickle-Down Coordination: The National Security Advisor’S Role As The Strategic And Operational Planner Of The Dod-Dos Interagency Relationship, Fabio S. Van Loon
Journal of Strategic Security
Forging a coherent U.S. foreign policy requires the competent management of the inter-agency framework. Defining strategy at the cabinet level and ensuring its implementation at the operational level, the National Security Advisor must act as an honest broker of the inter-agency process. This article will examine the role of three National Security Advisors from the Nixon, Carter and George W. Bush administrations, and study two examples of operational success and failure, highlighting the importance of the strategic-operational link. The author concludes by recommending a National Security Council (NSC)-led inter-agency framework that drives consensus-based strategic planning and mandates operational coordination through …
India’S Policy Shift Towards Afghanistan Under De Facto Taliban Government, Neha Manhas, Sitakanta Mishra
India’S Policy Shift Towards Afghanistan Under De Facto Taliban Government, Neha Manhas, Sitakanta Mishra
Journal of Strategic Security
The Taliban takeover of Afghanistan is no longer at the forefront of the global agenda, though after four years of its rule, the Islamic Emirate strives for global legitimacy. India, one of the major partners in the reconstruction of Afghanistan since 2001, has drastically minimized its role, and no major attempt was made to deal with the Taliban until the withdrawal of US/NATO forces in 2021. Similarly, the Taliban regime in turn has not made any breakthrough with India in its diplomatic pursuits. However, sporadic meetings between the Indian and Taliban government officials have taken place, leading to speculation …
The Element Of Surprise: Highly Maneuverable Satellites And Ssa, Simone L. Montandon
The Element Of Surprise: Highly Maneuverable Satellites And Ssa, Simone L. Montandon
Journal of Strategic Security
Military, commercial, and civil space missions rely on accurate space situational awareness (SSA) to avoid collisions and inform the analysis of the threat environment. Historically, man-made objects in space have been highly predictable because their trajectories were mostly constrained within the orbit they occupied. However, fast-paced progress in engine/thruster technology, energy efficiency, and on-orbit servicing and refueling have allowed satellites to maneuver often and quickly within their lifespan. This added an element of unpredictability that adds further uncertainty to an operational environment that is already highly uncertain. This paper argues that solving this issue will require pursuing continued custody of …
Subterranean Warfare’S Strategic Coming Of Age: The Israel-Hamas War Of 2023-Present, Nadav Morag
Subterranean Warfare’S Strategic Coming Of Age: The Israel-Hamas War Of 2023-Present, Nadav Morag
Journal of Strategic Security
This article posits the question as to whether subterranean warfare, which has been a tactic used in warfare since ancient times, has evolved to being an operational tactic in some contexts (such as in the Vietnam War and some Israeli-Hamas clashes in Gaza prior to 2023) and has now, for the first time, has “come of age” to the strategic level in the Israel-Hamas war that broke out in October 2023. The article argues that the current war in Gaza is one in which subterranean warfare has become strategic because the outcomes of this form of warfare in this context …

Fairer Public Benefit In Copyright Law, Amanda Levendowski Tepski
Fairer Public Benefit In Copyright Law, Amanda Levendowski Tepski
Cardozo Law Review
In 1966, a court considered expressly whether a secondary use of copyrighted works served a public benefit. While public benefit has become a subfactor of the fair use doctrine, it remains undefined, uncodified, and undertheorized. Courts often invoked public benefit in pivotal cases involving novel technologies, from home video recorders to digital libraries to algorithms—but they did not need to. After the recent Supreme Court decision in Google v. Oracle, however, public benefit is unavoidable: The Court stated that “we must take into account the public benefits the copying will likely produce.” A qualitative analysis of key public benefit cases …
Do Civil Penalties Punish? The Fbar Penalty And The Case For An Emboldened Excessive Fines Clause, Scott Oatkin
Do Civil Penalties Punish? The Fbar Penalty And The Case For An Emboldened Excessive Fines Clause, Scott Oatkin
Cardozo Law Review
The Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) regime authorizes the IRS to impose severe penalties—up to the greater of $100,000 or fifty percent of the account balance—for failure to report foreign bank accounts exceeding $10,000. While the Eighth Amendment protects Americans from “excessive fines,” circuit courts are split on whether the FBAR penalty constitutes a fine and is subject to constitutional scrutiny. Some courts have found that the FBAR penalty is wholly remedial and beyond the reach of the Excessive Fines Clause, but this Note argues that such an interpretation is inconsistent with the history and case law …

Family history (FH) of substance use disorders (SUDs) and stressful life events (SLEs) are known risk factors for SUDs in adolescents and young adults. Cross‐sectional studies suggest that FH and SLEs affect adolescent white matter (WM) development and form abnormal WM patterns. Here, we examined the effects of FH, SLEs and their interaction on WM integrity in youths in the Adolescent Cognitive Brain Development (ABCD) study at baseline and 2‐ and 4‐year follow‐ups. ABCD youths (N = 8939, age ± SD = 9.9 ± 0.6 years, 4302 female) completed baseline diffusion tensor imaging, of which 5661 repeated the scan …

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) is a condition marked by recurrent nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain in chronic cannabis users. Rarely, severe vomiting can lead to complications such as spontaneous pneumomediastinum, pneumopericardium, and pneumoretroperitoneum. We present a case of a 21-year-old woman with CHS who developed a rare triad of spontaneous pneumomediastinum, pneumopericardium, and pneumoretroperitoneum. Initial findings raised concern for Boerhaave syndrome; however, imaging ruled out esophageal perforation. The patient was managed conservatively with bowel rest, intravenous fluids, electrolyte correction, antiemetics, and antibiotics, resulting in full recovery. This case highlights the diagnostic challenges in distinguishing CHS common nonserious complications from more …

We theoretically investigate the stationary properties of a spin-1/2 impurity immersed in a one-dimensional confined Bose gas. In particular, we consider coherently coupled spin states with an external field, where only one spin component interacts with the bath, enabling light dressing of the impurity and spin-dependent bath-impurity interactions. Through detailed comparisons with ab-initio many-body simulations, we demonstrate that the composite system is accurately described by a simplified effective Hamiltonian. The latter builds upon previously developed effective potential approaches in the absence of light dressing. It can be used to extract the impurity energy, residue, effective mass, and anharmonicity induced by …

The power of visual language models is showcased in visual understanding tasks, where language-guided models achieve impressive flexibility and precision. In this paper, we ex tend this capability to the challenging domain of image matting by framing it as a soft grounding problem, enabling a single diffusion model to handle diverse objects, textures, and transparencies, all directed by descriptive text prompts. Our method teaches the diffusion model to ground alpha mattes by guiding it through a process of instance-level localization and transparency estimation. First, we introduce an intermediate objective that trains the model to accurately localize semantic components of the …

Filterfl: Knowledge Filtering-Based Data-Free Backdoor Defense For Federated Learning, Yanxin Yang, Ming Hu, Xiaofei Xie, Yue Cao, Pengyu Zhang, Yihao Huang, Mingsong Chen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
As a distributed machine learning paradigm, Federated Learning (FL) enables large-scale clients to collaboratively train a model without sharing their raw data. However, due to the lack of data auditing for untrusted clients, FL is vulnerable to poisoning attacks, especially backdoor attacks. By using poisoned data for local training or directly changing the model parameters, attackers can easily inject backdoors into the model, which can trigger the model to make misclassification of targeted patterns in images. To address these issues, we propose a novel data-free trigger-generation-based defense approach based on the two characteristics of backdoor attacks: i) triggers are learned …

Decoding stimulus images from fMRI signals has advanced with pre-trained generative models. However, existing methods struggle with cross-subject mappings due to cognitive variability and subject-specific differences. This challenge arises from sequential errors, where unidirectional mappings generate partially inaccurate representations that, when fed into diffusion models, accumulate errors and degrade reconstruction fidelity. To address this, we propose the Bidirectional Autoencoder Intertwining framework for accurate decoded representation prediction. Our approach unifies multiple subjects through a Subject Bias Modulation Module while leveraging bidirectional mapping to better capture data distributions for precise representation prediction. To further enhance fidelity when decoding representations into stimulus images, …

Boosting Chart-To-Code Generation In Mllm Via Dual Preference-Guided Refinement, Zhihan Zhang, Yixin Cao, Lizi Liao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Translating chart images into executable plotting scripts-referred to as the chart-to-code generation task-requires Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) to perform fine-grained visual parsing, precise code synthesis, and robust cross-modal reasoning. However, this task is inherently under-constrained: multiple valid code implementations can produce the same visual chart, and evaluation must consider both code correctness and visual fidelity across diverse dimensions. This makes it difficult to learn accurate and generalizable mappings through standard supervised fine-tuning. To address these challenges, we propose a dual preference-guided refinement framework that combines a feedback-driven, dual-modality reward mechanism with iterative preference learning. Our approach introduces a structured …

Auxiliary Prompt Tuning Of Vision‑Language Models For Few‑Shot Out‑Of‑Distribution Detection, Wenjun Miao, Guansong Pang, Zihan Wang, Jin Zheng, Xiao Bai
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent advancements in CLIP-based out-of-distribution (OOD) detection have shown promising results via regularization on prompt tuning, leveraging background features extracted from a few in-distribution (ID) samples as proxies for OOD features. However, these methods suffer from an inherent limitation: a lack of diversity in the extracted OOD features from the few-shot ID data.To address this issue, we propose to leverage external datasets as auxiliary outlier data (i.e., pseudo OOD samples) to extract rich, diverse OOD features, with the features from not only background regions but also foreground object regions, thereby supporting more discriminative prompt tuning for OOD detection. We further introduce …
Adaptive Security Metric For Optimizing Post-Quantum Cryptography In Constrained Iot Devices, Aisha Nasser Ahmed
Adaptive Security Metric For Optimizing Post-Quantum Cryptography In Constrained Iot Devices, Aisha Nasser Ahmed
Theses
Quantum Computing poses real threat to Classical Public-Key Cryptography requiring the use of Post-Quantum Cryptography for all Internet of Things Devices. However, there are greater computational, memory and communication overheads in PQC algorithms that create additional burdens on resource constrained IoT devices. At this time, there are no standard measures for systems developers to determine optimal PQC settings for the various IoT Device Classes. This Thesis develops a new framework of metrics for determining the most suitable PQC settings based on Security Strength, Performance Indicators (Latency, Memory, Energy), Communication Overhead and Reliability for each IoT device class. The Research introduces …

Ai-Enabled Multi-Layer Security Operations: A Combined Siem, Ids, And Threat Intelligence Model For Adaptive Cyber Defense, Mohamad Khayat
Dissertations
This dissertation presents a comprehensive framework for the evolution of Security Operation Centers (SOCs) through the integration of advanced artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and optimization techniques. Motivated by the increasing complexity of cyber threats and the limitations of traditional reactive SOC strategies, this work begins with a systematic literature review that identifies critical gaps in current SOC operations. Based on these insights, a reference architecture is proposed to guide the integration of intelligent components into SOC environments. To address the challenge of secure and trustworthy information sharing, a blockchain-based threat intelligence platform is developed, leveraging Byzantine Fault Tolerance and Zero-Knowledge …

The landlord moved to restore a holdover proceeding seeking a final judgment of possession based on the tenant's alleged breach of a 2019 probationary stipulation. The stipulation required the tenant to permanently exclude her son from the premises and remove him from the household composition. The landlord's motion relied on "information and belief" that the tenant changed the head of household to her son and that the tenant may reside in Pennsylvania. The court denied the motion, finding the landlord's affirmations and documentation insufficient, lacking personal knowledge and corroborating evidence, and failing to demonstrate a breach, particularly that the son …

Counseling, Leadership, and Research Methods Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study analyzed whether religious or spiritual affiliation and therapy enrollment protect against symptoms meeting Major Depressive Disorder criteria beyond demographic, Internet addiction, and described therapy enrollment. Findings illustrated one risk factor and one protective factor associated with experiencing symptoms that meet Major Depressive Disorder criteria: impairments and dysfunctional self-regulation increased participant probability and risk, while religious or spiritual affiliation decreased the probability of and protected participants from depressive symptoms. The findings underscore the complexities of Internet addiction and depression symptoms among a population of diverse online gamers, highlighting a critical need for tailored counseling interventions.
