Naadsaathi: Physiotherapy As A Service For Tabla Players, Atharv Mahamuni
Naadsaathi: Physiotherapy As A Service For Tabla Players, Atharv Mahamuni
ServDes Conference Series
Repetitive strain injuries are common among musicians; however, rehabilitation services remain largely reactive. This paper presents NaadSaathi, a physiotherapy service concept specifically for Tabla players considering the unique postures, asymmetrical workload, and repetitive movement patterns of Tabla playing. Some musicians avoid digital rehab, fearing it disconnects them from tradition. NaadSaathi blends Do-It-Yourself (DIY) exercise programs, tele-physiotherapy, and in-person therapy with digital posture monitoring. This work contributes to the intersection of physiotherapy (healthcare), high-tech interventions, and service design by redefining injury management for percussionists helping them return to peak performance while preserving tradition.
Mitigating Barriers In Novice Designers’ Prototyping With Ai: A Comprehensive Approach, Keita Mitomi, Koki Kusano
Mitigating Barriers In Novice Designers’ Prototyping With Ai: A Comprehensive Approach, Keita Mitomi, Koki Kusano
ServDes Conference Series
Prototyping plays a crucial role in design thinking, yet many novice designers fail to adopt it due to insufficient value recognition, limited technical skills, and psychological barriers. This study proposes a new approach by integrating a generative AI-based chat system to simultaneously address these three obstacles. In a two-month exploration with four participants focusing on circular economy themes, we developed two interactive tools—“Jibungoto Design Navigator” and “Try-It-Out Navigator.” Our findings indicate that AI-driven dialogues help clarify project goals, boost self-efficacy, and reduce the fear of failure through rapid prototyping support. The participants created both low- and high-fidelity prototypes with fewer …

Service designers often encounter power dynamics that shape their role in enabling change. This study explores how and why designers experience power in practice, drawing on ecological systems theory (EST) to map experiences gathered through a case study of five focus groups with international practitioners. Leverage analysis is then used to conceptualise these insights. By intersecting these two frameworks, we developed the Power Compass - a project-centred template that visualises how social, political, and ecological forces converge in design projects, revealing power as both a source of agency and a constraint. The template aims to support designers in identifying, analysing, …

Ai-Assisted Designers Or Designer-Assisted Ai? Human-Ai Collaboration In Service Design, Hyunyim Park
ServDes Conference Series
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into service design has transformed creative workflows, raising critical questions about the evolving relationship between AI and human designers. This study explored whether AI primarily functions as a tool for assisting designers or whether designers increasingly supervise AI-driven processes. An analysis of AI applications in research, ideation, prototyping and system mapping revealed that, while AI enhances efficiency and automates repetitive tasks, it lacks the contextual awareness, creativity and ethical reasoning necessary for autonomous design decision-making. Designers remain central to ensuring user centred innovation, refining AI-generated outputs and mitigating biases. This study underscores the need …

Journey Probe: Uncovering Aspirations Of Early-Career Employees Via Narrated Journeys, Sanandan Ratkal, Simran Patankar
ServDes Conference Series
Narrative mode of thought occurs frequently in the design process. The user research phases of a design lifecycle involve stories of users’ pains and aspirations. Aspirations can be abstract and highly contextual to uncover from conventional user research questions. Using journey maps can be an effective means to elicit user needs. Two designers experiment with journey-map styled worksheets i.e., journey probes as a tool for user research. The experiment was carried out to understand aspirations of early-career employees in a multi-national corporation in information technology services. The paper outlines the learnings gathered from the experiment and its potential as a …

Alarming numbers of university design students are experiencing significant issues related to their mental health and wellbeing. While the conditions affecting their mental health are systemic, universities play a key role in addressing academic related factors. This paper aims to better understand the stressors impacting design students’ wellbeing and identify strategies for addressing them. It reviews general academic and design-specific stressors highlighted in the literature. Drawing from a small sample of European design schools, the paper also shares promising practices for addressing these stressors. Kick-starting cross-institutional sharing, it offers a starting point for further collective efforts to improve student wellbeing.

Personal care market is drowning in plastic waste. Every week, 420 million lower middle- class consumers discard 2.94 billion sachets, while 560 million middle-class households throw away 2.8 billion bottles and tubes monthly. Despite growing environmental awareness, the gap between intention and action remains huge- 72% of consumers know plastic harms the environment, but only 38% dispose of it properly. This paper argues that while Product-Service Systems (PSS) provide solid theoretical foundations, Service Design is the practical game-changer that can solve India's packaging crisis. Through a mixed-method study involving 95 survey responses and 15 in-depth interviews across Indian cities, we …

Top-Down Instruction Outweighs Emotional Salience: Nocturnal Sleep Physiology Indicates Selective Memory Consolidation, Laura B.F. Kurdziel, Carie Fiedler, Alex Gajewski, Caroline Pongratz
Psychology Faculty Publications
Introduction:
Sleep plays a crucial role in memory consolidation, not only stabilizing newly encoded information but also potentially supporting forgetting. Yet it remains unclear how sleep prioritizes what is retained or discarded when multiple salience cues, such as emotional valence and top-down instructional goals, compete for consolidation.
Methods:
In two studies, we examined how emotional content and intentional memory instruction interact to shape memory performance across a 12 h interval that included either nocturnal sleep or wakefulness. Participants completed a directed forgetting paradigm with neutral and negatively valenced words, followed by immediate recognition and delayed free recall.
Results:
In both …

I Am A Person Too: The State's Failure To Secure Transgender Rights And Personhood, Trevor L.M. Reynolds
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
The winds of change appeared to blow on June 15, 2020, when the Su- preme Court decided Bostock v. Clayton County. The Bostock decision—in which the Court held that discrimination based upon an employee’s gender identity violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act—has been heralded as a revolutionary triumph for the LGBTQ+ community. And yet, while the Bos- tock decision dictated that employers cannot terminate people based on their gender identity, it failed in the most important regard: establishing gender identity as a protected constitutional class. The Court, however, is not unique in its failure to secure transgender rights; …

The Illusion Of Protection: Examining The Enigmatic Privileges Or Immunities Clause, Victoria Hagerott
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
For many years, the United States Supreme Court has protected unenu- merated rights, or rights not expressly stated in the United States Constitu- tion, under the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.! However, the Court has revoked or limited protections for certain unenumerated rights under this Clause in recent years. Most notably, in June 2022, the Supreme Court held in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that the Con- stitution does not confer the right to an abortion and thereby overtuming nearly fifty years of precedent that began with Roe v. Wade in 19732 To reach its holding in …

This study examines how perceived political party divide may foster affective polarization during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on nationally representative sample surveys of U.S. and South Korean adults, we investigate the relationship between attitude strength toward COVID-19 vaccines, perceived polarization, and affective polarization. Results suggest that individuals with stronger attitudes toward vaccines are more likely to perceive a greater ideological divide between political parties, which in turn, is associated with increased animosity toward the opposing party. Applying the mediation model to the South Korean sample yielded consistent findings, suggesting that the mechanism by which strong attitudes relate to negative emotions …

Du Bois And The Promotion Of Admissions Diversity: A Post-Grutter Analysis, Austin Burke
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
Today’s outlook on higher education for people of color is in question. Because of the downfall of affirmative action, higher educational facilities must look to factors other than race to increase or maintain diversity. W.E.B. Du Bois viewed education as a means to uplift Black people. In a time of uncertain missions of higher education, and a steadfast commitment to a con- tinuous uplift of the Black community, it is paramount to view all angles of solutions to the end of affirmative action. In analy=zing the shifting educa- tional philosophy of Du Bois against the modern struggle of maintaining di- …

In the United States, more than 1.9 million people are confined across local jails, state prisons, and federal prisons and jails.! Some of those people are innocent of the crimes for which they were convicted. In 2022 alone, 233 people were exonerated of crimes they did not commit.? Collectively, these 233 exonerees lost 2,245 years of their lives to incarceration.? Over the last few decades, as criminal justice reform movements have gained momentum, more attention has tumed to wrongful convictions. Yet much of the consideration has been dedicated to men, not women.* What ex- plains the lack of women featured …

Investigating Factors Influencing Organic Chemistry Learners' Explanation Sophistication And Representational Competence, Caroline J. Crowder
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The research presented in this dissertation has two themes: organic chemistry learners’ written explanations and representational competence. Chapters 3 and 4 explore how organic chemistry learners construct explanations of reaction mechanisms, specifically focusing on electrophile and nucleophile components. Chapter 5 investigates organic chemistry learners’ representational competence skills and the relationship between these skills and their performance in the course.
Understanding reaction mechanisms is critical for success in organic chemistry, yet learners often struggle to reason beyond explicit, surface-level features. Constructed-response prompts that ask learners to explain what is happening in a reaction mechanism and why it occurs can provide insight …

Exploring The Correlation Between Pupil Distance And Myopia Prevalence: An Observational Bioanthropology Study In Surabaya, Anggitha Hayuning Kinasih, Dwi Martha Nur Aditya, Y Adhimas Setyo Wicaksono
Folia Medica Indonesiana
Bioanthropology integrates biological and cultural perspectives, thereby enhancing our understanding of human health across populations. Myopia is a significant refractive error affecting potentially 2.5 billion people globally by the end of the decade. Bioanthropological theories suggest that pupil diameter and distance contribute to axial elongation and the progression of myopia. Nevertheless, current literature lacks empirical validation through rigorous hypothesis testing, highlighting a gap in comprehension. The research explores the relationship between pupil distance and the incidence of myopia via empirical assessments in Surabaya. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted, which involved pupil distance measurements and eye refraction assessments. Inclusion criteria …

In this nuisance/breach of lease holdover proceeding, the tenant moved to dismiss, arguing the landlord's petition was defective for failure to serve a 30-day termination notice under the federal CARES Act, as the property had a federally backed mortgage. The court denied the motion, holding that the CARES Act's 30-day notice requirement applies exclusively to non-payment proceedings, not to holdover proceedings based on nuisance or lease breach. The court found that subsections (b) and (c) of 15 U.S.C. § 9058 must be read in unison, and the notice provision (c) is implicitly limited by subsection (b)'s express reference to non-payment …

In this holdover proceeding alleging the tenant's objectionable conduct due to noxious odors, the tenant filed a multi-part motion. The court denied the tenant's motion to dismiss, finding the landlord's predicate notices sufficiently particular regarding the nature and dates of the alleged odors. However, the court largely granted the tenant's motion to compel a bill of particulars, holding that identifying information of complaining tenants constituted amplification of the landlord's claims. Information about the landlord's agents, however, was deemed evidentiary and beyond the scope. The court denied the tenant's motion for discovery, finding no ample need, and the case was scheduled …
