Is It Retaliation Or Remediation? Educating Our Learners On The Difference, France M. Leandre, Almari Ginory

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

The goal of this article is to discuss 1 of the questions in the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Resident/Fellow Survey, which assesses the fear of retaliation in a program. To better understand the needs of residents and facilitate the reporting of concerns, programs must evaluate and educate residents on the difference between remediation and retaliation.

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Background

Research is a core component of health profession training programs, but few efficient training resources exist that provide introductory research training that is brief, freely accessible, and supportive of learners with varying levels of research experience.

Methods

We set out to create the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) Research Certificate program to support Graduate Medical Education (GME) residents and other learners. We initially explored existing curricula used to instruct medical and doctor of pharmacy students in order to identify foundational research topics to include in our introductory research program. We were guided by stakeholders to create a curriculum …

Use Of Topical Hemostatic Agents In A Gynecologic Patient With Coagulopathy, Alexis O'Connell, Syeda Zainab Shah

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Introduction

The use of topical hemostatic agents has become common during surgical interventions. There is a wide variety of substances available to augment clotting, ranging from physical agents to topical thrombin combinations. Application of these agents in gynecologic surgery in patients with existing coagulopathies has not been studied.

Case Presentation

A 62-year-old woman with an inferior vena cava filter and a history of multiple deep vein thromboses presented to the clinic with pelvic pain, stress urinary incontinence, and uterovaginal prolapse. She underwent a total vaginal hysterectomy, sacral colpopexy, tension-free vaginal tape sling, and cystourethroscopy. Warfarin was cross titrated to enoxaparin …

Utilizing Femoral Metaphyseal Sleeves In Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty For Post-Traumatic Osteoarthritis: A Case Report, Zachary Sukin, Adam Dentinger, Jeremiah Earl

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Background

Total knee arthroplasty in younger patients presents a heightened risk of postoperative complications and implant failures compared to older populations, particularly in those with posttraumatic arthritis. These challenges necessitate careful consideration and specialized approaches to optimize the outcomes in this patient demographic.

Case Presentation

A 43-year-old man presented with left knee pain resulting from a traumatic lawn mower injury, causing an intraarticular distal femur, at the age of 6. The injury led to a limb-length discrepancy for which he underwent 2 limb-lengthening procedures in his early 20s. Radiographs demonstrated advanced posttraumatic osteoarthritis, and the patient elected to proceed with …

Beyond The Norm: Decoding Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection As An Unusual Cause Of Acute Coronary Syndrome, Holden Zimmerman, Himanshi Banker, Inder P. Kaur, Jaskaran Munjal, Vasu Gupta, Ayushi Garg, Nikita Garg, Meet Patel, Rohit Jain Oct 2025

Beyond The Norm: Decoding Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection As An Unusual Cause Of Acute Coronary Syndrome, Holden Zimmerman, Himanshi Banker, Inder P. Kaur, Jaskaran Munjal, Vasu Gupta, Ayushi Garg, Nikita Garg, Meet Patel, Rohit Jain

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a rare nonatherosclerotic cause of myocardial infarction among young women, particularly during pregnancy. As the name suggests, SCAD is caused by the spontaneous formation of the false lumen within the coronary artery wall, thus compromising the blood flow to the myocardium. Unlike atherosclerotic acute coronary syndromes, SCAD is not directly associated with diabetes or hypertension; moreover, underlying connective tissue defects and inflammation are considered more contributory towards its etiology. Although its pathophysiology is not well understood, multiple theories have been proposed. Clinically, SCAD has a similar presentation to acute coronary syndromes, including substernal chest …

Living Property, Joseph William Singer Oct 2025

Living Property, Joseph William Singer

Seattle University Law Review

The Supreme Court has increasingly defined property rights that are per se exempt from regulation in the absence of compensation, most recently in Cedar Point Nursery v. Hassid (2021) and Tyler v. Hennepin County (2023). The Court claims that it can identify property rights that are categorically protected from regulation by reference to history, tradition, and precedent. Yet this approach is oddly ahistorical; it is inconsistent with the fact that property law changed dramatically over U.S. history, as well as varying tremendously among the states. It is also inconsistent with the historical context of the Founding era. At that time, …

The Roots Of Credit Inequality, Andrea Freeman Oct 2025

The Roots Of Credit Inequality, Andrea Freeman

Seattle University Law Review

Debt oppression began before the United States became a country. Settlers enslaved Africans and Indigenous people, treating them as property that they could buy and sell for their economic and personal benefit. When enslavement became illegal, new economic systems and laws that included sharecropping, Black Codes, and Jim Crow kept Black people in servitude. Laws that prohibited enslaved people from owning property or selling goods to white people evolved into restrictions on Black people’s occupations and market participation, both formal and informal. When Black entrepreneurs overcame these obstacles and built wealth within Black business enclaves, white people enforced their racist …

“A Plain Denial”: Reclaiming Equal Protection In American Juvenile Law, Addie C. Rolnick, David S. Tanenhaus, Justin Iverson, Danielle L. Silvestri Oct 2025

“A Plain Denial”: Reclaiming Equal Protection In American Juvenile Law, Addie C. Rolnick, David S. Tanenhaus, Justin Iverson, Danielle L. Silvestri

Seattle University Law Review

Juvenile courts are based on the premise that children are different from adults and should therefore be treated differently. Children may be treated more informally by courts, punished for different purposes, and brought before the court for different behaviors. Since In re Gault, the Supreme Court has been clear that there are limits to how different juvenile courts can be. Juveniles are entitled to many of the same procedural protections as adult criminal defendants, although the Court has preserved some procedural differences where it has determined that their benefit is outweighed by the need to preserve the informality, flexibility, …

Analyzing Surface Spectral Signature Shifts In Fire-Affected Areas Of Elko County Nevada, Ibtihaj Ahmad, Haroon Stephen

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

This study investigates post-fire vegetation transitions and spectral responses in the Snowstorm Fire (2017) and South Sugarloaf Fire (2018) in Nevada using Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) surface reflectance imagery and unsupervised ISODATA classification. By comparing pre-fire and post-fire conditions, we have assessed changes in vegetation composition, spectral signatures, and the emergence of novel land cover types. The results revealed widespread conversion of shrubland and conifer-dominated systems to herbaceous cover with significant reductions in near-infrared reflectance and elevated shortwave infrared responses, indicative of vegetation loss and surface alteration. In the South Sugarloaf Fire, three new spectral classes emerged post-fire, …

Redefining Section 230 Immunity, Lucas Dini Oct 2025

Redefining Section 230 Immunity, Lucas Dini

Seattle University Law Review

Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act has provided broad immunity to online platforms for third-party content which was the foundation for the internet's growth. However, the rise in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to produce algorithms to curate content to users of online services has blurred the line between being a passive host of third party content and active editorial control. This Note examines the legal, policy, and constitutional implications of applying Section 230 immunity to platforms that use AI to curate and promote third-party content. This analysis argues that algorithmic promotion of third-party content constitutes a platform's …

Overcrowding The System: Rethinking Juvenile Justice In Washington State, Mckenna White Oct 2025

Overcrowding The System: Rethinking Juvenile Justice In Washington State, Mckenna White

Seattle University Law Review

The recent crisis at Green Hill School highlights the detrimental consequences of severe overcrowding in Washington State’s Juvenile Rehabilitation system—a problem exacerbated by the implementation of the JR to 25 legislation. This Note argues that the juvenile rehabilitation system, which is currently struggling to manage a wide age range of offenders, necessitates a fundamental rethinking of juvenile justice practices. By examining neurological research indicating continued brain development into the mid-twenties, along with the high prevalence of trauma among justice-involved youth, this Note proposes the creation of a dedicated third system of care within the Department of Children, Youth, and Families …

It's A Sin, Jamie Rogers Oct 2025

It's A Sin, Jamie Rogers

B.F.A. Practicum Exhibition (ART 498)

Sex is political. Counter-cultural responses to sexual propriety are often modeled as resistance to conservative values. Many subcultures have a long tradition of opposing mainstream norms, particularly regarding sexual and political correctness. While the association of pain with sexuality dates back to ancient rituals, such as those for the Goddess Inanna in 3000 B.C., the post-World War II era witnessed an exponential growth of sexual fetishism, particularly in BDSM. This period also saw the emergence of fetish materials like rubber, latex, and military or medical gear, with leather fetishism evolving into a distinct subculture. Leather and latex were employed to …

Literature Across Generations; The Old Javanese Epic Poem "Bhāratayuddha" Translated Into Modern Javanese, Keiko Kamiishi

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a revival movement of classical Javanese (Kawi) literature arose in the royal courts of south Central Java. As part of this revival, Old Javanese literary works were rewritten in Modern Javanese, giving Javanese people at that time renewed access to their literary heritage. The paper deals with a specific manuscript, Add MS 12279 in the British Library, which contains Modern Javanese word-for-word and line-for-line “translations” inserted between lines of the Old Javanese epic poem Bhāratayuddha. The unique structure of the manuscript reveals the translation strategies used to address the challenges of balancing the …

Tracing The Transformation Of The "Ruwatan" Rituals In Java From The Fifteenth To The Twenty–First Century, Muhammad Heno Wijayanto, I Made Suparta, Turita Indah Setyani

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article explores the transformation of ruwatan (purification) rituals in Java from the fifteenth century to the twenty-first century, focusing on the changes that occurred based on archaeological relics and texts related to ruwatan rituals. A thorough study in connecting archaeological relics, such as reliefs in Sukuh Temple, with puja (ritual worship) texts used in ruwatan rituals and the transformation of these texts from their origins within Kawi culture through to the Islamic period and the present day, has not been attempted. This research aims to identify and analyse the transformation of ruwatan rituals from the fifteenth century, as reflected …

Addressing The Root Of Housing Insecurity: Washington Should Divest From “Crime-Free” Housing Programs, Sarah Cerdena Oct 2025

Addressing The Root Of Housing Insecurity: Washington Should Divest From “Crime-Free” Housing Programs, Sarah Cerdena

Seattle University Law Review

Crime-Free Rental Housing Properties (CFRHPs) have proven to be an ineffective and inequitable approach to public safety. Often, tenants in these properties are evicted—at times, extrajudicially—as a result of conduct that does not rise to violations of their lease provisions, much less criminal behavior. By placing extraordinary power in the hands of local law enforcement to carry out these ordinances, CFRHPs predictably pose significant harm to Black and Latinx communities, survivors of domestic violence, disabled tenants, and low-income tenants generally. Recently, the Washington State Supreme Court grappled with the tensions arising between CFRHPs and the enforcement of Washington landlord-tenant law. …

Esg Investing Breaches Erisa Fiduciary Duties? A Closer Look At Spence V. American Airlines, Inc., Eric Chin-Ru Chang

Seattle University Law Review

In Spence v. American Airlines, Inc., the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas found that American Airlines breached its fiduciary duties due to BlackRock’s ESG investing practices. Contrary to some reports suggesting that the ruling prohibits ESG investing under ERISA, a closer look at the ruling shows that the court only targeted American Airlines’ failure to manage conflicts of interest appropriately, rather than the legality of ESG investing itself. In light of the intensifying ESG backlash in the United States, this Article cautions against further restrictive measures on ESG investing. Such measures would exacerbate the widening …

The Relationship Between Anemia, Chronic Energy Deficiency, Knowledge, And Other Factors And Anc Attendance Among Pregnant Women In Bogor City And Regency 2025, Winfried Ichtussend Hartnajaya Chrisna, Ratu Ayu Dewi Sartika, Nurul Dina Rahmawati, Daden Setiawan

Indonesian Journal of Public Health Nutrition (IJPHN)

Antenatal Care (ANC) is a comprehensive health service to optimize pregnancy outcomes. In 2023 in Bogor City, the ANC K6 coverage rate has reached the target (98.63%), but this is not the case with the coverage in Bogor Regency (62.25%). ANC visits that do not reach the standard can be influenced by predisposing factors, supporting factors, and health needs factors. The inequality that occurs can hinder efforts to reduce maternal mortality. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge and other factors with ANC visits in Bogor City and Regency in 2025. This study is quantitative with a cross-sectional …

Perceived Benefits And Side Effect Of High-Fiber, High-Protein Meal Replacements In Weight Loss Programs, Esti Nurwanti, Harry Fl Muhammad, Naufal M. Nurdin

Indonesian Journal of Public Health Nutrition (IJPHN)

Obesity is a major risk factor for chronic diseases and early mortality. Although dietary counseling is essential in managing obesity, maintaining a calorie deficit and preventing weight regain remain difficult. Functional foods like high-protein, high-fiber meal replacements may enhance adherence and support weight loss. This randomized controlled trial evaluated the subjective outcomes of a weight loss program incorporating a protein- and fiber-enriched meal replacement among 73 overweight women aged 20–30 years. Participants were randomized to an intervention group (n=38), receiving dietary counseling plus one daily meal replacement, or a control group (n=35), receiving counseling alone. Both groups followed an 8-week …

Knowledge Creation Network In Response To Crisis: A Static–Dynamic Framework For Innovation Network Resilience From A Dual-Risk Perspective, Longfei Li

Double Helix Methodology

It is essential to comprehend the feature and improvement path that supports the resilience of innovation networks under multiple crisis shocks. Studies have primarily examined the impact of network features on sustainable innovation outcomes yet overlooked the inter-organisational resilience feature of these networks. This study presents a measurement system to analyse resilience features in China's new energy vehicle industry (NEVI) cooperative innovation network. To evaluate the evolution of network structures and functionality, this system integrates the static–dynamic framework, capturing static and dynamic impacts. The exponential random graph model is used to investigate the improvement path of innovation network resilience in …
