The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of different course modalities on undergraduate students’ academic performance in introductory statistics courses. Using Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) as a theoretical framework, this research aims to shed light on the complex dynamics influencing statistical literacy attainment. By addressing gaps and inconsistencies in the current literature, this study seeks to …

Frameworks For Repatriation: Moving Beyond Nagpra, Ashley Joplin Nov 2025

Frameworks For Repatriation: Moving Beyond Nagpra, Ashley Joplin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Museums and similar federally funded educational institutions have been collecting human remains since the Enlightenment era in the 1800s. Since then, these institutions have developed various collections practices that have encouraged the collection of human remains. Often unethical in nature, these collections have harmed historically marginalized communities, such as Indigenous and African American communities. While the ethics of collecting have been under scrutiny for decades, it was not until 1990 under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) that mainstream attention was drawn to the ethics of collections practices.

This thesis explores these collections practices and the repatriation …

From Vulnerability To Robustness: A Survey Of Patch Attacks And Defenses In Computer Vision, Xinyun Liu, Ronghua Xu Nov 2025

From Vulnerability To Robustness: A Survey Of Patch Attacks And Defenses In Computer Vision, Xinyun Liu, Ronghua Xu

Michigan Tech Publications

Adversarial patch attacks have emerged as a powerful and practical threat to machine learning models in vision-based tasks. Unlike traditional perturbation-based adversarial attacks, which often require imperceptible changes to the entire input, patch attacks introduce localized and visible modifications that can consistently mislead deep neural networks across varying conditions. Their physical realizability makes them particularly concerning for real-world security-critical applications. In response, a growing body of research has proposed diverse defense strategies, including input preprocessing, robust model training, detection-based approaches, and certified defense mechanisms. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of patch-based adversarial attacks and corresponding defense techniques. …

Structural Equation Modeling Of Educational Factors Associated With Racial Trauma: Belonging, Efficacy, And Persistence Among Bipoc College Students, Miguel Castano, Richard Chang Nov 2025

Structural Equation Modeling Of Educational Factors Associated With Racial Trauma: Belonging, Efficacy, And Persistence Among Bipoc College Students, Miguel Castano, Richard Chang

Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters

Racial trauma refers to post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms from repeated exposure to racism and racial discrimination, generally expressed as hypervigilance and lack of safety, negative cognitions causing bleak perceptions of oneself and the world, and difficulty coping through reduced ability to manage distress. Literature shows that BIPOC students encounter racism on university campuses more frequently than non-BIPOC students, suggesting they are more vulnerable to racial trauma. Racial trauma has been linked to negative mental health outcomes; however, little is known about its impact on educational outcomes. Academic belonging, self-efficacy, and persistence are key educational factors tied to academic performance and …

Unpacking The Role Of Virtual Exchange In Promoting Student Well-Being, Mona Pearl, Kelly Tzoumis, Allison E. Hill, Spencer D. Sutherland

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education

Educational institutions and workplaces are grappling with the task of promoting the well-being of their students and employees. From 2021 to 2023, students from Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Mexico, The Netherlands, and the US participated in virtual exchange collaborations in the form of global virtual teams (GVTs) and were assessed pre (n=201) and post (n=251) their GVTs experience. We used structural equation modeling (SEM) to assess changes in learner well-being from participation in GVTs. Based on the impact to student perceived well-being from the GVT experience, we found important results that can be useful for both employers and academic institutions …

Journal of the Louisiana Public Health Association

Background: Data collection and monitoring efforts among juvenile justice agencies have grown exponentially in the United States over the last 50 years. Despite widespread recognition that reliable data is essential to developing strategic evidence-based policies, there are still considerable gaps among the states and locally. In Louisiana, legislators and decision-makers have worked towards advancing juvenile justice policy reforms in recent decades, though the resulting outcomes remain unclear. The goals of the current study were to identify existing data reporting strengths and gaps within the Louisiana juvenile justice system (JJS) and examine how such reports might be better used in data-driven …

Bragg and Hays began correspondence in 1966, as they developed plans for what would become the National Theatre of the Deaf. …

Exploring Private And Governmental Interest In Bitcoin, Mina Khadem Nov 2025

Exploring Private And Governmental Interest In Bitcoin, Mina Khadem

Undergraduate Theses, Capstones, and Recitals

Regardless of one’s opinion, Bitcoin’s presence in the global economy is growing. However, Bitcoin’s emerging role and its implications are greatly under-researched, particularly in the context of government interest in Bitcoin. Nonetheless, increased private investment in Bitcoin and increased government interest in formally incorporating Bitcoin into existing economic systems, suggest a new development within the global economy that must be investigated. Through qualitative text analysis of pro-Bitcoin narratives presented in digital media platforms and official government policies and public statements, this thesis explores how private and government interest in Bitcoin is explained and framed within these contexts. This study finds …

Streamlining Sepsis Care And Enhancing Antibiotic Administration Efficiency Through Emergency Department Staff Nurse Education, Dafina Jamillah Skinner Nov 2025

Streamlining Sepsis Care And Enhancing Antibiotic Administration Efficiency Through Emergency Department Staff Nurse Education, Dafina Jamillah Skinner

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency that requires rapid identification and treatment. Delays in administering antibiotics are directly associated with increased mortality, longer hospital stays, and higher complication rates. Without intervention, patients faced preventable harm, and the organization risked continued non-compliance with federal quality measures. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project implemented a structured educational program for emergency department (ED) nurses to improve knowledge of evidence-based sepsis protocols. The practice-focused question asked: For nurses in the ED, will an educational intervention on sepsis recognition and antibiotic stewardship improve knowledge of timely antibiotic administration and blood culture acquisition? Twenty ED …

The Experience Of Black Mothers Preparing Their Black Sons For Race-Related Risks, Yamilka Torres Nov 2025

The Experience Of Black Mothers Preparing Their Black Sons For Race-Related Risks, Yamilka Torres

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Despite progress in addressing racism in the United States, its effects remain deeply entrenched, particularly for Black families. Research on Black parenting shows that parents adapt their strategies to protect children from criminalization, discussing violence, providing safety within the home, and limiting exposure to unsafe environments while also managing their own stress. Yet limited attention has been given to how Black mothers prepare their sons for race-related risks within the modern sociopolitical climate shaped by the #BlackLivesMatter movement. The purpose of this basic qualitative research study was to explore how Black mothers prepare their Black sons for race-related risks. Carter’s …

Creating A Data Processing Pipeline With Mne-Python, Lesly Vazquez, Ananda Liz Peixoto Couto

Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters

The UNLV Psychophysiology of Emotion and Personality Lab (PEPLab) utilizes a MATLAB based pipeline to process electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings. MATLAB is a proprietary software package, which limits the ability to analyze psychophysiological data and increases the financial burden of research. To increase the accessibility of data reduction skills, we have created and tested a new pipeline utilizing MNE-Python, an open source software package (Gramfort et al., 2013). In this pilot study, we utilized existing EEG recordings and examined the relationship between the Triarchic Model of Psychopathy and Error-Related Negativity (ERN) responses across incorrect and correct trials during a Letter Shock …

Prediction Error's Influence Of Declarative Memory: A Replication, Camila Schettini, Kevin Mohawk Nov 2025

Prediction Error's Influence Of Declarative Memory: A Replication, Camila Schettini, Kevin Mohawk

Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters

We often have predictions about what to expect in our everyday encounters. However, not all these predictions will be accurate. Prediction error (PE) refers to the discrepancy between expectations and actual observed outcomes, and it is believed to play a role in learning, such as in classical conditioning. Yet, its relationship to one-shot declarative memory remains poorly understood. In the present study, we aimed to replicate Greve et al. (2017, Experiment 1) by testing whether PE enhances memory. Participants first learned scene-word associations in which a specific scene image was paired with one of two category labels, “positive” or “negative”. …

Archaeological Predictive Meta-Modeling In Pre-Columbian Mexico, Peter Stamm Nov 2025

Archaeological Predictive Meta-Modeling In Pre-Columbian Mexico, Peter Stamm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Archaeological Predictive Modeling stands firmly as an important tool for Archaeologists to predict undiscovered sites from civilizations all across the globe. While powerful, this methodology is not without its own set of qualms. Striking a balance between pure a data-driven approach while also observing leading expert theories can be a complicated task. Going further, deciding on the specific domain of features to emphasize or overlook can be a challenge within itself, as one misstep can drastically change the output of model, sometimes for the worst. In addition, creating models that can expose their reasoning process can be rather difficult to …

Pragmatic Textualism, Brian G. Slocum, Kevin Tobia Nov 2025

Pragmatic Textualism, Brian G. Slocum, Kevin Tobia

Duke Law Journal

Traditional textualism instructs judges to adhere to a statute's linguistic meaning and reject as irrelevant its interpretive consequences. Justice Scalia famously contrasted his restrained textualist judge with "Mr. Fix-It," a judge who inappropriately weighs consequences. Today, however, textualists increasingly embrace consequentialist reasoning. This Article documents this undertheorized shift and the emerging textualist efforts to justify it, including Justices Kavanaugh and Barrett's arguments for nonliteralism and judicial sensitivity to context. This Article critiques these efforts: Modern textualist theory lacks a compelling explanation for its newfound reliance on interpretive consequences.

Next, we offer a novel theory of the linguistic role for interpretive …

Incubators Of Innovation: Finding A Place For Title Ix In Religious Charter Schools, Emily Bass Nov 2025

Incubators Of Innovation: Finding A Place For Title Ix In Religious Charter Schools, Emily Bass

Duke Law Journal

Since the early 1990s, many people across the country have embraced charter schools as "incubators of innovation." Charter schools are publicly funded, tuition-free, K–12 schools that have more flexibility than traditional public schools in curriculum, staffing, and more. With this flexibility, charter schools constantly test new approaches, aiming to inspire educational reform.

In recent years, some have begun calling for a new kind of charter school: the religious charter school. In May 2025, the Supreme Court deadlocked in Oklahoma Statewide Virtual Charter School Board v. Drummund, a case involving St. Isidore, the nation's first explicitly religious charter school. For …

Patent Monopsonies, Roy Baharad, Gideon Parchomovsky Nov 2025

Patent Monopsonies, Roy Baharad, Gideon Parchomovsky

Duke Law Journal

Conventional wisdom perceives patent protection as a necessary evil. Patent protection, the argument goes, raises the prices of patented products and processes, thus restricting access to innovation. But without it, not enough innovation will be produced. Hence, generations of scholars have sought ways to curb the market power of patentees via various legal interventions, such as prizes, compulsory licenses, and other forms of regulation. All have tacitly assumed that eroding the market power of patentees would result in a competitive market for innovation that would put an end to the allocative inefficiencies and distributional inequities that emanate from patent protection. …

Perfect Strangers: Improving Access To Justice By Regulating Third-Party Litigation Funding And Forced Arbitration, Benedict W. Luongo Nov 2025

Perfect Strangers: Improving Access To Justice By Regulating Third-Party Litigation Funding And Forced Arbitration, Benedict W. Luongo

Duke Law Journal

The rising cost of litigation and the Supreme Court's expansion of forced arbitration leave vast swaths of consumers and civil rights plaintiffs without an adequate path to the only forum with the independence to fairly decide controversies: courts. This access-to-justice gap presents an opportunity for third parties seeking to profit from litigation to provide funding to support plaintiffs' litigation costs in exchange for an interest in the judgement or settlement. But third-party litigation funding mostly benefits businesses, and it does not help plaintiffs overcome forced arbitration. Many who acquire third-party funding realize that they are victims of a new form …
