Student Publications

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP1R) agonists, such as semaglutide, are used for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus and promoting weight loss. This study investigates genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying GLP1R activation using a novel in silico approach to identify effects on metabolism, glucose and insulin production, gastrointestinal motility, behavior, and satiety. This approach used three separate searchable web-based programs and databases (STRING, Pathway Commons, and BioGRID) to identify and analyze functional gene and protein interactions with mechanisms to query GLP1R and related metabolic and appetite regulatory networks with disease associations. We examined integrated gene–gene and protein–protein interactions, pathways, molecular functions, associated …

Climate Change Has Increased Global Evaporative Demand Except In South Asia, Saeed Karimzadeh, Arman Ahmadi, Dennis Baldocchi, Joshua B. Fisher

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Climate change alters how strongly the atmosphere draws water from the land, yet a consistent global assessment of this evaporative demand has been lacking. Here, we analyze 45 years of climate data and global models to quantify trends in the key drivers—air temperature, humidity, radiation, wind speed, and cloud cover—that determine the atmosphere’s drying power. We find that evaporative demand has increased worldwide, indicating a stronger atmospheric thirst, except in South Asia, where it has declined. There, widespread irrigation has increased soil and air moisture, enhanced cloud formation, and reduced sunlight reaching the surface, counteracting the global signal. These contrasting …

Missing Children Discrimination, Itay Ravid, Tanisha Brown

Faculty Publications

The problem of missing children in America—many of whom are victims of crime—has haunted society for decades. In response, a range of laws and policies have emerged, culminating in the nationwide adoption of the AMBER Alert system in the early 2000s. While often hailed as a success, this Article reveals a sad truth: Not all children benefit equally from AMBER. In particular, missing Black children are systematically underserved by the system, which ultimately contributes to the disproportionate impact of the missing children crisis on Black communities. While this issue received limited scholarly attention, states have recently started recognizing it. In …

Accountability And Enforcement Aspects Of The Eu General Data Protection Regulation – Methodology For The Creation Of An Effective Compliance Framework And A Review Of Recent Case Law, Paolo Balboni, Martim Taborda Barata, Anastasia Botsi, Kate Francis

Indian Journal of Law and Technology

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which has been applicable within the EU/EEA since 18 May 2018, has brought about reinforced rules on personal data protection which have dramatically shifted the paradigm for all organisations bound by them. This includes not just those which actively handle personal data as a core part of their business model, but also those which are required to handle personal data (on employees, customers or suppliers, for example) as part of their day-to-day activities – in other words, all organisations falling under the GDPR’s scope. By holding organisations responsibile for their own compliance, and requiring …

Web 2.0 And The Concept Of ‘Data Controller’: Recent Developments In Eu Data Protection Law, Maria Berger, David Eisendle

Indian Journal of Law and Technology

In order to operationalise the fundamental right to privacy, as reaffirmed by the Supreme Court in the landmark K.S. Puttaswamy judgment, the Indian government has recently introduced a draft data protection legislation. The present draft is inspired — to a considerable extent — by the EU’s GDPR and defines numerous key notions in largely identical terms. In view of these similarities, this paper seeks to examine the recent developments in the EU regarding the concept of ‘data controller’ and its application to what may be termed as a ‘Web 2.0 setting’. The paper commences with a review of the obligations …

Genome size varies widely, even among closely related species, yet much less is known about chromosome size variation. Here we use the fourth chromosome of Drosophila, also known as the "Muller F element" or "dot chromosome", as a model to investigate chromosome-specific size expansion. The F element of most Drosophila species is small (∼1.3 Mb) and almost entirely heterochromatic, yet harbors approximately 80 protein-coding genes. Here, we study D. kikkawai, D. takahashii, D. ananassae, and D. bipectinata, whose F elements are 2- to 15-fold larger in size compared to D. melanogaster. Through manual gene curation and comparative genomic analysis, we …

Replica molding is a widely used technique for the fabrication of polymer microstructures. As structural dimensions decrease, anti-stick surface treatment of the mold becomes increasingly critical to ensure clean demolding and preserve structural integrity. We fabricated arrays of micropillars with 20 µm diameter and 60 µm height using medical-grade polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), MDX4-4210, and observed a high fraction of collapsed pillars for the first molding after fluorosilanization of the mold to reduce sticking. To address this issue, we systematically investigated the surface treatment protocol for the molds, made from the PDMS Sylgard 184. We provide results from complementary measurement methods, to …

Retrieval Augmented Framework For Deepfake Audio Detection, Avinash Saxena

Master's Theses

The widespread use of AI-based audio deepfakes threatens severely to undermine media integrity and public trust. Speech synthesis techniques have improved dramatically in voice conversion (VC) and text-to-speech (TTS) in recent years, making forgeries sound highly realistic, and concerns are raised about possible malevolent uses. Existing state-of-the-art techniques for identifying fake speech have proven to be effective in some cases but are still limited in application and robustness when faced with novel attacking strategies, different acoustic conditions, or alternative linguistic domains. To address some of these limitations, the current research presents a novel deepfake audio detection system based on personalized …
