Scaling Wind Farm Layout Optimisation To Meet Uk Energy Demands, Grace Richardson
Scaling Wind Farm Layout Optimisation To Meet Uk Energy Demands, Grace Richardson
The Plymouth Student Scientist
This research aims to explore the Wind Farm Layout Optimisation Problem (WFLOP) through both single- and multi-objective optimisation, to show that it can be used to create farm layouts that provide enough power for all homes in the UK. We highlight the intricacies of the problem, including the application of different algorithms and models, and the challenges of scaling the models to achieve optimal results. We employ both a Hill Climbing Algorithm (HCA) and an evolutionary algorithm (NSGA-II) to obtain wind farm layouts, and compare these to the well-known results proposed by Mosetti et al. Moreover, we present a novel …
Design And Validation Of An Industrial Out-Of-Plane Permeability Test Rig Of Fibre Preforms For The Development Of Next Generation Aircraft Structures, Callum Park
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Despite composites comprising 50% of modern aircraft structures, the absence of a standardised method for measuring out-of-plane permeability frequently results in manufacturing defects in early-development aerospace components, directly impacting safety, manufacturing efficiency and costs. This study aimed to address this gap, by designing and commissioning a compact, vacuum-assisted, mass flow test rig, capable of evaluating the saturated out-of-plane permeability of a variety of materials. This design incorporated learnings from theory, previous studies and discussions with industry experts. E-glass, a Metyx unidirectional carbon and the Teijin ITS55 carbon were investigated, where E-glass exhibited the highest permeability of 1.88E-12m2, while …
Investigating Deception-Related Moral Conflict Using Electroencephalography (Eeg) Hyperscanning, Madie Ades
Investigating Deception-Related Moral Conflict Using Electroencephalography (Eeg) Hyperscanning, Madie Ades
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Amplitudes of the early Bereitschaftspotential (BP) and deceptive behaviour have been theorised to be modulated by moral conflict experienced when making deceptive decisions, as the decision to lie can depend upon our moral perceptions of what is right and wrong (Panasiti et al., 2014). However, most Electroencephalography (EEG) deception paradigms lack ecological validity by utilising instructed lying and failing to incorporate genuine social interaction (Ganis & Keenan, 2009) and therefore may fail to elicit genuine moral conflict. The present study combined hyperscanning EEG with a competitive two-player social game, where participants freely chose to respond accurately or deceptively for …

Otherwise Than Human: Responsibility In The Wake Of Disaster, An Eco-Deconstructive Response To Climate Catastrophe, James W. Harris
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis will, firstly, assume a line of eco-deconstructive reasoning, which takes as its point of departure from other approaches to the environment the basic premises of deconstruction, which aim to de-center the ontological and epistemological assumptions of Western thought about the subject and language, and apply it to the concept of the human as a distinct and, most importantly, privileged being as this privilege has operated within language and culture, thereby demonstrating how climate catastrophe constitutes a fundamental rupture in traditional ontology. Secondly, I will turn towards the ethics of Emmanuel Levinas, as in present in his God, Death, …
On Solving The Vertical Generalized Linear Complementarity Problem Associated With A Vertical Block P-Matrix, Mark K. Horlu
On Solving The Vertical Generalized Linear Complementarity Problem Associated With A Vertical Block P-Matrix, Mark K. Horlu
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
In Ebiefung et al. (2017) an algorithm was developed to solve the vertical generalized linear complementarity problem (VGLCP) when the associated matrix is a vertical block P-matrix (VBP). The objective of this study is to implement the algorithm on a large scale using the Python programming language. We also use a Python code to generate test VBP- matrices Ebiefung et al. (2022), and used them to implement the algorithm. On a representative example, every computational step including basis updates, pivot selection, and vector analysis is recorded. The Python implementation exhibits precise convergence. The final results verifying the correctness of the …
A Question To Query Llm As A Pipeline Replacement In Knowledge Graph Question Answering Systems, Major Schwartz
A Question To Query Llm As A Pipeline Replacement In Knowledge Graph Question Answering Systems, Major Schwartz
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Knowledge Graph Question Answering (KGQA) pipelines commonly depend on separate entity and relation predictors before querying the graph, which introduces engineering complexity and costly inference passes over large vocabularies. This thesis presents a drop-in replacement for those modules: a fine-tuned large language model (LLM) that translates a natural-language question directly into an executable SPARQL query. We fine-tune instruction-tuned backbones, Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct and Mistral-7B-Instruct, on paired (question, gold SPARQL) examples, which are formatted through chat templates. As a result, the models can perform single-step query generation. The training and inference pipeline includes a lightweight post-processor that corrects tokenizer-induced spacing artifacts in generated …
Optimizing Xylitol Production: A Molecular And Experimental Study Of Xylose Reductase In Candida Tropicalis, Zackery Neal
Optimizing Xylitol Production: A Molecular And Experimental Study Of Xylose Reductase In Candida Tropicalis, Zackery Neal
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Xylitol, a naturally occurring sugar alcohol, is widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries as both an artificial sweetener and an anticariogenic agent. Traditional xylitol production relies on harsh chemicals and energy-intensive processes, making microbial fermentation a more sustainable alternative. This study explores the ability of Candida tropicalis to convert D-xylose into xylitol through the enzyme xylose reductase, with a focus on optimizing pH conditions to enhance conversion efficiency. To achieve this, both experimental fermentation and computational molecular dynamics simulations using GROMACS and the pHbuilder tool are employed. By analyzing the enzyme’s stability and structural dynamics across different pH …

Dna Methylation Markers Of Insulin Resistance Surrogate Measures In The Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities (Aric) Study, Jeewoen Shin, Jan Bressler, Megan L Grove, Michael Brown, Elizabeth Selvin, James S Pankow, Myriam Fornage, Alanna C Morrison, Chloé Sarnowski
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Insulin resistance (IR) is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Associations between DNA methylation (DNAm) and IR have been less studied in African ancestry (AA) populations than those of European ancestry (EA). We aimed to identify associations between whole blood DNAm and IR in up to 1,811 AA and 964 EA participants from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study. We quantified IR using three surrogate measures: the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), the triglyceride-glucose index (TyG), and the triglyceride glucose-body mass index (TyG-BMI). We used ancestry-stratified linear regression models to conduct epigenome-wide association …

Suicide behavior rates have increased over the years in the United States among Latinas and adolescents/young adults. Previous research has identified relationships between various body-related concerns, (e.g., body dissatisfaction, appearance comparison, and body shame) cyberbullying, social anxiety, and suicidal ideation, yet minimal research has examined the relationship of these factors and how they interrelate to explain suicide risk in Latina young adults. This study investigated whether body dissatisfaction, appearance comparison, and body shame had indirect effects on suicide behaviors through the interaction of cyberbullying victimization in 194 Latina college students. The results of this study found that cyberbullying victimization mediated …
Efficient Self-Supervised Representation Learning For Large-Scale Time Series Classification, Kevin Garcia
Efficient Self-Supervised Representation Learning For Large-Scale Time Series Classification, Kevin Garcia
Theses and Dissertations
Recently, there has been a significant advancement in designing Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) frameworks for time series data to reduce the dependency on data labels. Among these works, hierarchical contrastive learning-based SSL frameworks, which learn representations by contrasting data embeddings at multiple resolutions, have gained considerable attention. Due to their ability to gather more information, they exhibit better generalization in various downstream tasks. However, when the time series data length is significant long, the computational cost is often significantly higher than that of other SSL frameworks. In this paper, to address this challenge, we propose an efficient way to train hierarchical …
Interpretable Alignment Of Textual Weather Reports With Local Sensor Time Series For Extreme Weather Event Visualization, Juan Luis Garza
Interpretable Alignment Of Textual Weather Reports With Local Sensor Time Series For Extreme Weather Event Visualization, Juan Luis Garza
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents an automated and interpretable pipeline that links natural-language weather narratives with local meteorological sensor time series. Using large language models, NOAA-style event reports are transformed into structured records capturing event type, timing, descriptive context, and uncertainty. Each extracted event is aligned with harmonized temperature, precipitation, and wind measurements from nearby weather stations, enabling systematic comparisons between narrative evidence and observed atmospheric conditions.
Across roughly fifty stations and more than two thousand events, the analyses show that discrepancies between narrative descriptions and sensor behavior arise primarily from spatial separation rather than from temporal offsets, sensor preprocessing artifacts, or …

This thesis serves as the bridge between results compiled across varying models of tile self-assembly, molecular computation, and game complexity. As such, this thesis is broken into three chapters. In the first part, we show how to generate any Discrete Self-Similar Fractal (DSSF) with a feasible generator in the seeded Tile Assembly model, a model limited to single tile attachments and pairwise state transitions. In the next part, we study models of molecular computation, where we consider the problem of reachability in Chemical Reaction Networks and similar model extensions. The final part is a game-complexity analysis of Celtic! and k-ago, …
Ai-Driven Electromagnetic Design And Performance Prediction Of Microstrip Antennas, Eduardo Javier Vazquez
Ai-Driven Electromagnetic Design And Performance Prediction Of Microstrip Antennas, Eduardo Javier Vazquez
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the application of Deep Learning to automate and accelerate microstrip antenna inverse design. The initial investigation was to predict microstrip antenna performance from its geometry parametric input, and found out that forward prediction with adopted geometric representation results in ill-posed scenario, high ambiguity and unstable mapping. The study later mostly focuses on the inverse prediction by machine learning from S11 parameter input to predict antenna patch geometry parameters instead.
A dataset of 5,000 ANSYS HFSS simulated antennas (later filtered to 4,136 valid samples) was generated using cubic spine -described geometry profiles. Multiple neural architectures were adopted for …
Boundary-Layer Mechanisms In Flow Over Triangular Porous-Textured Flat Plates: A Computational Fluid Dynamics Study, Luis Angel Alvarez
Boundary-Layer Mechanisms In Flow Over Triangular Porous-Textured Flat Plates: A Computational Fluid Dynamics Study, Luis Angel Alvarez
Theses and Dissertations
Growing demand for energy-efficient vehicles drives research into flow control strategies that mitigate aerodynamic drag. Active devices such as morphing flaps or plasma actuators offer real-time authority but require external power. Passive concepts, including riblets, tubercles, porous coatings, and miniature vortex generators, reshape the boundary layer without additional energy input. We propose an integrated passive solution called Triangular Porous Texturing (TPT). TPT combines the two mechanisms: a periodic array of triangular prisms that generate controlled streamwise vortices, and an embedded porous matrix that locally adjusts pressure gradients near the wall. Acting synergistically, these features attenuate near-wall turbulence, redistribute momentum, and …

Interactive Effects Of Nutrient Loading And Hyposalinityon The Physiological Responses Of The Red Macroalga Gracilaria Tikvahiae, Donavuan Vincent Salazar
Theses and Dissertations
Coastal macroalgae face anthropogenic stressors such as nutrient enrichment from nitrogen fertilizers and reduced salinity linked to flooding. The physiological impacts of these combined stressors remain unclear. This study examined interactive effects of nitrogen loading and hyposalinity on Gracilaria tikvahiae through a 9‑day laboratory experiment. Samples experienced declining salinity (35–0 ppt) with nitrate or ammonia enrichment (120 µmol/L). Measurements included primary production, respiration, biomass, nitrate uptake, and chlorophyll‑a. Hyposalinity significantly reduced physiological performance, with gross primary production declining over 100%, chlorophyll‑a content 25–45% lower, biomass loss, and reduced nitrogen uptake. Nitrogen enrichment failed to mitigate the adverse impacts under hyposaline …
Probing Prebiotic Rna Oligonucleotide Polymerization On A Mg-Fes Catalyst Using Microfluidics, Gabriella Garza
Probing Prebiotic Rna Oligonucleotide Polymerization On A Mg-Fes Catalyst Using Microfluidics, Gabriella Garza
Theses and Dissertations
Non-enzymatic polymerization under aqueous conditions has long been viewed as unfavorable, due to product (H2O) inhibition in abiotic settings (Damer & Deamer, 2015); despite its efficiency in biology through ATP monomer activation. Geochemically sustained pH gradients may provide free energy for condensation of organic monomers (Martin & Russell, 2003). Here, we investigated a biologically analogous non-enzymatic mechanism for RNA oligomerization, by probing the catalytic properties of a Mg-rich FeS mineral under aqueous conditions. FeS minerals promote a diverse prebiotic reaction (Wächtershäuser, 1988) and would have precipitated at Hadean submarine hydrothermal systems (Sojo et al., 2016). Natural pH and redox gradients …

This study aims to test the applicability of cementochronology to estimate season-of-death, by observing the properties of the last layer, with direct implications for forensic anthropology and bioarchaeology. The sample includes canine teeth from 146 adults (84 males, 62 females), age-at-death ranging from 20-97 years (mean=61.7 years, SD=18.6 years), from two contemporary skeletal collections. Of these individuals, 78 (53.4%) died in spring/summer and 68 (46.6%) died in fall/winter. Overall accuracy was low at 64.4% (94/146). Accuracy was higher for spring/summer deaths 100.0% …
Feature Extraction From Railroad Bearing Onboard Vibration Sensors Using Machine Learning Models, Diego Cantu
Feature Extraction From Railroad Bearing Onboard Vibration Sensors Using Machine Learning Models, Diego Cantu
Theses and Dissertations
The University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS) has developed an algorithm capable of identifying defective railroad bearings, determining damaged component(s) within, and quantifying severity of the defects. The defect-detection algorithm requires the operating speed as an input, which is not readily available in field operation of onboard sensors. Therefore, onboard sensors deployed in rail revenue service must rely on Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to obtain speed, which can be power-intensive and susceptible to signal interference. This study covers the development of a vibration-based model that extracts operating speed from wireless sensor data to enable fully autonomous onboard diagnostics. Signal …

Postprocessing Gan-Generated Synthetic Time Series Using Dynamic Time Warping, Md Raisul Islam Roni
Postprocessing Gan-Generated Synthetic Time Series Using Dynamic Time Warping, Md Raisul Islam Roni
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are a class of deep learning models capable of producing realistic synthetic data that preserve the statistical and temporal characteristics of real datasets. The DoppelGANger (DGAN) framework extends this approach to time series data by jointly modeling temporal dependencies and contextual metadata. However, synthetic sequences generated by GAN may show temporal misalignment, resulting in inconsistencies when compared with real data. This study presents a postprocessing framework based on Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) and its differentiable extension Soft-DTW to improve the temporal alignment of synthetic time series. The framework is evaluated using quantitative measures of alignment and …
Exploring Denitrification In Wetland Nitrogen Cycling And Biostimulant-Based Agricultural Strategies To Improve Ecosystem Health, Alexander Bechtel
Exploring Denitrification In Wetland Nitrogen Cycling And Biostimulant-Based Agricultural Strategies To Improve Ecosystem Health, Alexander Bechtel
Theses
The overuse of fertilizers has doubled the amount of reactive nitrogen in the environment. Agricultural runoff then carries these pollutants into the waterways eventually causing severe ecological damage such as the Gulf of Mexico dead zone. Nitrogen plays an important role in all life on this planet, here we describe two complementary projects that investigate ways to mitigate nitrogen pollution. The first project investigates denitrification rates in soil after the Len Small Levee breached in 2016 which reconnected the Dogtooth Bend Floodplain with the Mississippi briefly. The denitrification process that began in the hydrologically activated soils was hypothesized to be …
Echo’S Repertoire: Performing Science Fiction And Trans Care Models, Juniper Blue
Echo’S Repertoire: Performing Science Fiction And Trans Care Models, Juniper Blue
Theses
Echo’s Repertoire is a mixture of a passion piece and a call for more work with performing science fiction. It focuses on interpersonal communication within trans studies and the experiences of transgender individuals and myself. Echo’s Repertoire is also an example of the Lyrical Model proposed by Awkward-Rich as a new model for trans affirming speech. The show is laid out non-linearly and follows along with Echo as he starts to build new relationships with the advice of his spaceship ai, Eep, who is a previous version of himself prior to transformation (transition).
