Augmenting Large Language Models To Predict Social Determinants Of Mental Health In Opioid Use Disorder Using Patient Clinical Notes, Madhavi Pagare, Deva Sai Kumar Bheesetti, Inyene E. Essien-Aleksi, Mohammad Arif Ul Alam

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Objective

Identifying social determinants of mental health (SDOMH) in patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) is crucial for estimating risk and enabling early intervention. Extracting such data from unstructured clinical notes is challenging due to annotation complexity and requires advanced natural language processing (NLP) techniques. We propose the Human-in-the-Loop Large Language Model Interaction for Annotation (HLLIA) framework, combined with a Multilevel Hierarchical Clinical-Longformer Embedding (MHCLE) algorithm, to annotate and predict SDOMH variables. Materials and Methods

We utilized 2636 annotated discharge summaries from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC-IV) dataset. High-quality annotations were ensured via a human-in-the-loop approach, refined …

Protecting The Poor: Financial Distress In Credit Unions, Lakisha Atkins Dec 2025

Protecting The Poor: Financial Distress In Credit Unions, Lakisha Atkins

All Dissertations

Credit unions are essential to financial inclusion, particularly in underserved communities; however, they face increasing instability, closures, and consolidations. Traditional corporate bankruptcy models, such as the Altman Z-Score, were designed for profit-driven firms and do not adequately account for the nonprofit, member-owned structure of credit unions. As a result, they overlook both the financial and governance dynamics that shape credit union performance. This dissertation addressed that gap by examining the financial indicators that are most useful for identifying early signs of distress, while interpreting those indicators through the lens of Agency Theory.

Drawing on longitudinal data from the National Credit …

Naamkaran At The Border: Reflections On Naming, Identity, And Belonging, Vejoya Viren Dec 2025

Naamkaran At The Border: Reflections On Naming, Identity, And Belonging, Vejoya Viren

Human Development and School Services Faculty Publications

Names serve as primary anchors of identity, carrying histories, cultural markers, and personal significance. Yet individuals with non-Western names frequently encounter mispronunciation, abbreviation, or simplification— practices that subtly diminish or erase aspects of identity. This article employs an autoethnographic lens to explore the complex terrain of naming across personal and professional contexts. Drawing on lived experience from India to the U.S.–Mexico border, the essay examines the emotional and social labor associated with names, the negotiation of linguistic difference, and the ethical imperative of respectful pronunciation. It situates personal narrative within scholarship on microaggressions, identity construction, and linguistic justice, demonstrating how …

Llm-Powered Question Answering For Object States In Virtual Reality, Shiyi Ding Dec 2025

Llm-Powered Question Answering For Object States In Virtual Reality, Shiyi Ding

Master's Theses

Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) and multimodal large language models (MLLMs) enable natural language–based querying in virtual reality (VR). However, VR environments are highly localized, personalized, and dynamic, making it challenging for general-purpose models to answer environment-specific queries or reason about subtle object state changes. To address these challenges, this thesis develops two systems for 3D question answering in VR.

First, we present RAG-VR, the first retrieval-augmented 3D question-answering system designed for VR. RAG-VR augments an LLM with external knowledge retrieved from a localized knowledge database and includes a pipeline for extracting environmental and user-related information. To improve …

Exclusivity In Early Maya Monumentality, Scott R. Hutson, Mario Zimmermann, Iliana Ancona Aragón Dec 2025

Exclusivity In Early Maya Monumentality, Scott R. Hutson, Mario Zimmermann, Iliana Ancona Aragón

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Datasets from around the world suggest that people completed early monumental construction projects without long-term structures of hierarchy or authority. In the Maya area, some of the first monuments produced by semisedentary societies, such as those at Yaxuna and Ceibal, were built in the absence of substantial social inequality. The focus of these monuments was a relatively inclusive plaza. This article presents evidence of an eighth-century BC monumental construction at Ucí, another site that was probably not fully sedentary. At Ucí, however, the first large architecture is not inclusive. Structure 14sub5 lacks a front stairway, separating people in the plaza …

Topic Modeling And Culturomic Analysis Of 30,000 Books Over 100 Years Using Gensim, Michael A. Freeman Dec 2025

Topic Modeling And Culturomic Analysis Of 30,000 Books Over 100 Years Using Gensim, Michael A. Freeman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the cultural influence of historical events on English-language fiction published between 1820 and 1929. Using a corpus of 30,256 digitized books from Project Gutenberg, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling was applied to identify recurring themes across eleven decades. The study sought to determine whether historically significant events could be detected within fictional narratives. One clear instance emerged: Napoleon Bonaparte and the Napoleonic Wars appeared explicitly in the 1820s corpus. Beyond this, several thematic patterns were observed—such as maritime language in the 1840s, national identity in the 1880s, and youth-oriented dialogue in the early 20th century—that plausibly …

Ethnomusicologically Augmented French Diction Course, Jake Larcqua Dec 2025

Ethnomusicologically Augmented French Diction Course, Jake Larcqua

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

Modern diction pedagogy in university vocal performance education largely depends on a combination of International Phonetic Alphabet transcription study and the application of those systems to Western-Classical vocal repertoire. However, recent research in related fields suggests we may be able to expand our diction teaching methods to better meet the needs of our students. Using a combination of second-language pedagogic principles, folksong structure, self-efficacy concepts, modeling structures, and ethnomusicological perspectives on classroom culture, I have drafted a French diction course that should improve not only students’ performance within university vocal music education, but also students’ confidence in their ability to …

Coming To The American Vincentian Mission In 1818: The Second Journey, John E. Rybolt C.M. Dec 2025

Coming To The American Vincentian Mission In 1818: The Second Journey, John E. Rybolt C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Three letters from Francesco Cellini, a Vincentian novice, and his confrere, Filippo Borgna, a Vincentian student with vows, are given or summarized here. In 1818, Cellini and Borgna made an eighty-eight-day voyage from Livorno, Italy, to the United States. Cellini wrote an account to a friend in Rome, and Borgna largely copied this in his letter, perhaps to ensure that one of their texts would survive the trip back to Italy. These are the only known detailed records of the Vincentians’ second journey to the US and reinforce records kept by Felix De Andreis and Joseph Rosati, who came two …

A Deep Learning And Causal Modeling System For Retinal Disease Diagnosis, Shiyu Tian Dec 2025

A Deep Learning And Causal Modeling System For Retinal Disease Diagnosis, Shiyu Tian

Dissertations (1934 -)

Vision-threatening retinal diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME), are major causes of preventable blindness worldwide. Early screening and follow-up are essential, but advanced imaging like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is expensive and not always available outside large clinics. In contrast, color fundus photography is inexpensive and common, yet it only shows a surface view and can miss subtle changes inside the retina. These practical limits make it hard to deliver timely, high-quality eye care in many settings. As AI is increasingly used in healthcare, retinal disease diagnosis has benefited as well. This work combines deep …

Symbolic Justice: The Continued Limits Of International Criminal Justice Without A Permanent Prison System, Meg Penrose Dec 2025

Symbolic Justice: The Continued Limits Of International Criminal Justice Without A Permanent Prison System, Meg Penrose

Faculty Scholarship

Many people misremember Nuremberg, Tokyo, and the subsequent World War II tribunals. These seminal international tribunals gave the world convictions but largely failed to fully enforce the sentences imposed. Most people do not recall the mass clemency following the World War II tribunals. This Article seeks to fill a scholarly void by explaining why international criminal justice has never matured beyond Nuremberg and Tokyo. The modern ad hoc tribunals, as well as the permanent International Criminal Court (“ICC”), have failed to deliver lasting justice. Much like Nuremberg and Tokyo, the modern tribunals fixate on arrests and convictions and then seemingly …

Validation Of Diagnostic Markers And Linkage Mapping In Vitis × Muscadinia Hybrids, Isabella Vaughn Dec 2025

Validation Of Diagnostic Markers And Linkage Mapping In Vitis × Muscadinia Hybrids, Isabella Vaughn

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Vitis genus comprises two subgenera, Vitis (2n = 38) and Muscadinia (2n = 40), both cultivated for wine, juice, and fresh-market fruit. Vitis vinifera cultivars produce high-quality fruit but are highly susceptible to diseases endemic to the southeastern United States, while muscadines (Muscadinia rotundifolia) provide exceptional disease resistance, heat tolerance, and environmental adaptability. Hybridizing these subgenera offers a path to combine fruit quality with disease resistance; however, wide Vitis × Muscadinia (V × M) crosses remain difficult due to differences in chromosome number, genetic divergence, and reproductive barriers that reduce fertility and recombination. Recent breeding efforts have introgressed stenospermocarpic …

Educational Freedom In The United States: Democracy, Pandemic Learning, And Family Choices, Daion Lamont Daniels

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the relationships among educational freedom, democratic outcomes, and family choice in the United States. Through three complementary studies, it examines how school choice interacts with civic education, student achievement, and parental behavior. Together, these studies provide a comprehensive view of how educational freedom is reshaping American schooling. The first study investigates whether private schooling supports or undermines democratic values. Using survey data from students in both private and public schools, it finds that private school students demonstrate stronger knowledge of American government and greater support for democratic norms. These results suggest that private schools may play a …

False Narratives And Fierce Hope: Recentering Appalachian Rhetorics Of Place And Health, Sarah G. Cardwell Dec 2025

False Narratives And Fierce Hope: Recentering Appalachian Rhetorics Of Place And Health, Sarah G. Cardwell

Honors Theses

This research seeks to analyze the rhetorical dimensions of how health is discussed in Appalachia, focusing specifically on Letcher County, Kentucky. In Letcher County, as in many Appalachian communities, rhetorics of healthcare and poverty are inextricably linked, largely due to media portrayals. One of the most impactful of these media portrayals is the 1964 CBS special entitled Christmas in Appalachia. In this special, host Charles Kuralt visits Letcher County and makes a pointed effort to speak to families who are living in poverty, asking them questions about their daily lives and if they “want better” for their children than their …

The Impact Of Colonization On The Political Development Of Colonized Nations Post-Independence: The French Colonization Of Lebanon, Mariam Faleh Dec 2025

The Impact Of Colonization On The Political Development Of Colonized Nations Post-Independence: The French Colonization Of Lebanon, Mariam Faleh

Honors Theses

Colonization is characterized in literature through the lens of the colonizer, defined primarily by its successes. From the discovery of the New World by Columbus in 1492 to the establishment of the United States of America by the EU, spread of democracy across the globe, and its association with the idea of globalization, colonization is seen as the pioneer of the modern world. While colonization has played a large role in the development of the world as we know it, paving the way for the success of many independent nations, it has also simultaneously hindered the development of many. This …

Examing Fear Conditioning/Extinction And The Role Of The Amygdala In Human Neuroimaging., Olivia Cook

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fear plays a crucial role in survival but can lead to psychological disorders when dysregulated. Fears can be innate due to evolutionary relevance or learned through associative processes, where predictive accuracy of threat is pivotal. Disruptions in fear neurocircuitry contribute to anxiety disorders, characterized by heightened activation and impaired learning. Fear conditioning and extinction paradigms based on classical Pavlovian conditioning have been used to study mechanisms underlying fear learning. Using this experimental model, fear networks in rodents have been described in detail with clear distinction between conditioning and extinction neural functioning. Yet, there is no consensus on the neurobiological processes …

Spectroscopic Studies Of Metal Containing Molecules Under Jet-Cooled Conditions Using Laster-Induced Fluoresence (Lif) And Dispersed Fluorescence (Df) Techniques., Md Touhidul Islam Dec 2025

Spectroscopic Studies Of Metal Containing Molecules Under Jet-Cooled Conditions Using Laster-Induced Fluoresence (Lif) And Dispersed Fluorescence (Df) Techniques., Md Touhidul Islam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the jet-cooled spectroscopy of the calcium propoxide radical (CaOC₃H₇) to understand how increasing molecular complexity reshapes symmetry, electronic degeneracy, and vibronic coupling. Moving from Ca–OCH₃ to Ca–OC₃H₇ lowers symmetry (C₃v → Cs → C₁) and exposes effects such as spin–orbit splitting and both Jahn–Teller and pseudo–Jahn–Teller distortions. These features remodel the excited-state potential surfaces and are directly observable with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and dispersed fluorescence (DF). A central goal is to evaluate whether CaOC₃H₇ supports the near-diagonal vibronic branching needed for efficient optical cycling, while also highlighting implications for catalysis and astrochemistry, where precise spectral fingerprints guide …

The Role Of Law Enforcement In Sexual Assault Kit Submissions: A Statewide Analysis Of Decision-Making Processes & Focal Concerns In Kentucky., Rychelle Elizabeth Wilks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sexual assault case attrition persists throughout the criminal justice system, partly due to inconsistent Sexual Assault Kit (SAK) submission decisions. This dissertation examines factors influencing police officers' decisions to submit SAKs for forensic testing, applying the focal concerns perspective to understand how legal and extra-legal characteristics shape these decisions. Using statewide Kentucky data from July 2007 to March 2018, this study analyzed 2,194 adult sexual assault cases from 192 law enforcement agencies. Of these cases, 1,520 (69.3%) resulted in SAK submission. Logistic regression analyses examined the full sample, as well as four subsamples. Results provide mixed support for focal concerns …

Symmetry, Stability, And Robust Optimization Strategies For Nonorthogonal Multiconfiguration Self-Consistent Field Wavefunctions., Zihui Song Dec 2025

Symmetry, Stability, And Robust Optimization Strategies For Nonorthogonal Multiconfiguration Self-Consistent Field Wavefunctions., Zihui Song

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The "different orbital different configuration" (DODC) framework is a general formulation of multireference wavefunctions that allows each configuration (determinant) to possess its own set of optimized molecular orbitals, rather than sharing a common orbital basis as in conventional orthogonal configuration interaction (CI) or Complete Active Space Self-Consistent Field (CASSCF) methods. One prominent example of the DODC framework is the Nonorthogonal Configuration Interaction (NOCI) method, which relaxes the orthogonality constraint between the orbitals of different configurations. This relaxation enables a compact yet flexible description of systems exhibiting strong correlation. By employing multiple nonorthogonal reference determinants, NOCI naturally incorporates orbital relaxation and …

Characterizing The Ethanol Sensitivity Of The Planar Cell Polarity Pathway In Endoderm Morphogenesis And Jaw Development., Raéden Omneil C. C. Rolle Gray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) describes a large range of developmental defects due to prenatal alcohol exposure. It is characterized by neural and facial defects, including jaw hypoplasia. Many factors contribute to the susceptibility of ethanol-induced facial defects, including genetics, yet the genes involved, and the cell events they regulate, are poorly understood. Zebrafish have a large number of tools for genetic manipulation available, share 70% of genes with humans, are fertilized externally and are translucent during embryogenesis, making them great models to study FASD. Previous studies show that two members of the Planar Cell Polarity (PCP) pathway, zebrafish vangl2 …

Artificial Intelligence For Cancer Imaging: Integrated Frameworks For Hepatocellular Carcinoma And Pulmonary Nodules., Ahmed Muhammed Sherif Mostafa Alksas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reliable, reproducible, and clinically useful artificial intelligence (AI) for oncologic imaging requires more than high headline metrics: it demands principled pipelines, calibrated predictions, and designs that generalize across anatomy, scanners, and institutions. This dissertation develops such pipelines in two complementary domains— hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) on multiphase CT/MRI and indeterminate pulmonary nodules on thin-slice CT—while articulating evaluation and reporting practices that support credible clinical translation. The work proceeds in six core chapters. Two focused reviews synthesize the state of the art in (i) radiomics/AI for HCC and (ii) early assessment of lung nodules, mapping common pitfalls (data leakage, class imbalance, kernel …

Scalable Carbon-Based Electrodes For Hole-Transport Layer-Free Perovskite Solar Cells., Sharmin Akter Dec 2025

Scalable Carbon-Based Electrodes For Hole-Transport Layer-Free Perovskite Solar Cells., Sharmin Akter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have rapidly reached certified single-junction efficiencies near 26%, but deployment is still limited by operational instability, scale-up challenges, and the cost and complexity of typical device stacks. This dissertation explores a simpler, scalable approach: HTL-free PSCs using low-cost, chemically robust carbon (e.g., carbon black) counter electrodes compatible with low-temperature, solution processing. This work demonstrates how carbon-ink formulation, scalable deposition (blade vs. slot-die), and work-function-tuning additives control film quality, interfacial energetics, and device performance. Carbon inks were developed for both coating methods by systematically varying carbon-to-binder ratio, polymer chemistry, and solvent system. Among the binders screened, ethyl …

An Objective Structured Clinical Examination For Cervical Plexus Block Utilizing Ultrasound Guidance And Landmark Technique, Morgan Sollie, Cathrine Warren Dec 2025

An Objective Structured Clinical Examination For Cervical Plexus Block Utilizing Ultrasound Guidance And Landmark Technique, Morgan Sollie, Cathrine Warren

Doctoral Projects

Regional blocks have become an increasingly important part of anesthesia practice. Anesthetists have developed many of these regional blocks in recent years, and because of this, some certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) have not received training specific to each kind of block during their education. An example of a block that current CRNAs who graduated in earlier years may have yet to receive specific training on is a cervical plexus block. Developing a learning tool such as an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) will address this knowledge gap.

An OSCE will allow CRNAs to take advantage of hands-on learning stepwise, …
