Introduction: Immune deficiency and infection with human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) are established component causes of Kaposi sarcoma (KS), but they are insufficient to cause disease in most people at risk. Therefore, we hypothesized that genetic variation may contribute to KS risk in children and adults, as well as contribute to its unique epidemiology in sub-Saharan Africa.
Methods: To test this hypothesis, we conducted a two-phase genome-wide association study (GWAS): a discovery study in perinatally HIV-infected children (45 KS cases, 91 controls), followed by validation of significant results in a sample of adults living with HIV (215 cases, 262 controls). After standard …

“Spinning Wheel Got To Go Round”: Developments In The Law Affecting Electronic Payments And Financial Services, Sarah Jane Hughes, Tom Kierner, Stephen T. Middlebrook
Articles by Maurer Faculty
The past year reminds us of the rock lyrics from “Spinning Wheel” on Blood, Sweat & Tears’s 1968 self-titled record—“What goes up, must come down/Spinning Wheel got to go round”—because there have been many changes in strategy and reversal of policy since President Trump’s inauguration in January 2025. Our Survey documents these changes and reversals as they affect electronic payments and financial services. This year’s Survey also reports on warnings from state and federal regulators aimed at bank and non-bank providers of consumer financial services. Part II examines an FTC enforcement action related to the unfair and deceptive marketing of …
Evaluating Datasets And Models For Offensive Language Identification, Skye Deson Morgan
Evaluating Datasets And Models For Offensive Language Identification, Skye Deson Morgan
Theses
Social media platforms enable people to easily communicate with one another, share ideas and express their opinions. Unfortunately, the anonymity provided by platforms such as Twitter and Facebook is more than enough to foster the spread of harmful content. Government agencies, as well as technology companies, are actively working towards finding better means of curbing offensive and objectionable content in social media and contributing to a more welcoming online environment. In this study, I first present a critical literature review on offensive language identification, exploring offensive language datasets and computational models using both machine learning and deep learning. Next, I …

Prior research has developed a number of manipulation techniques that can achieve precise object placement in virtual reality, but studies of these techniques typically use simple objects. We conducted a study comparing two existing techniques, (AMP-IT and WISDOM), during alignment of objects with complex geometry to evaluate the potential influence of geometric complexity on performance, usability, workload and preference. Our findings indicate that participants had faster completion times and higher trial completion rates with AMP-IT on high-precision alignment tasks, contrary to earlier findings that used simple objects. Yet WISDOM is still preferred and considered more usable, despite increased workload and …

Pattern-Aware Graph Neural Networks For Handling Missing Data, Minett Tran, Taehee Jeong
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Missing data is ubiquitous in real-world datasets. Traditional methods either discard incomplete samples or apply imputation techniques that ignore potentially informative missingness patterns, implicitly assuming that missingness occurs randomly. However, missingness patterns might provide additional information. We propose pattern-aware graph neural networks that explicitly encode which features are missing alongside observed values. We used four encoding strategies-learned embeddings, frozen random embeddings, statistical features, and hierarchical representations-across seven UCI datasets with naturally occurring missingness. Our Pattern-aware methods achieve substantial improvements over baselines, with an average improvement of 17% in balanced accuracy and 22% in F1-macro across all datasets. Our code and …

Introduction: Despite advances in stent design, pharmacotherapy, and procedural techniques that have improved percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) outcomes and reduced PCI-related complications, these events still occur and are associated with adverse outcomes. Moreover, complex PCI procedures, which predispose to increased risk of complications, are increasingly performed. Understanding risk factors, underlying mechanisms, evidence-based management, and preventive strategies are essential to optimize procedural outcomes. This review aims to summarize current evidence and highlight gaps in knowledge related to PCI-associated complications.
Methods: This narrative review used a focused PubMed search through October 2025, prioritizing randomized trials, large observational studies, guidelines, and consensus statements. …

Atrial fibrillation (AF) affects approximately 3%-5% of adults and is projected to double in prevalence by 2060, significantly increasing the burden of thromboembolic stroke. This risk is largely attributed to thrombus formation within the left atrial appendage (LAA), particularly in nonvalvular AF, where the LAA's trabeculated anatomy, diverse morphologies (e.g., chicken wing, windsock, cactus, cauliflower), and impaired contractility allows for blood stasis and thrombogenesis. As a result, the LAA has become a focus for stroke prevention strategies. This review demonstrates current evidence on LAA closure by discussing patient selection, anatomical feasibility, procedural workflow, imaging guidance (transesophageal echocardiography vs. intracardiac echocardiography), …

The standard for in silico pathogenicity prediction of in-frame insertions and deletions (indels) is less established compared to other types of variations. We aimed to systematically assess the performance of in silico machine learning (ML) tools on a patient cohort with inherited retinal diseases (IRDs). The performance of four ML tools (CADD, FATHMM-indel, VEST4, and MetaRNN-indel) was compared. Among them, MetaRNN-indel showed the best overall results. MetaRNN-indel was then applied to 1013 unsolved IRD patients, identifying two likely pathogenic causal variants in two unrelated IRD patients by confirming clinical phenotypes. Hence, our findings indicate that reliable prediction of the pathogenicity …

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is the analysis of wastewater to detect pathogen levels or activity for public health awareness or action. Pioneered in the 1940s, WBE underwent a resurgence during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing important information about number of cases, outbreaks, and seasonal impact. With advancements in detection technologies and growing interest in environmental surveillance, WBE is poised to become a standard practice in public health monitoring. Here, we provide an overview of the current state of the art of pathogen WBE, including methods of molecular detection, analysis of wastewater data, real-world applications and programs, public health interventions, and benefits and …

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a major driver of global cancer incidence, responsible for nearly all cervical cancers and a significant proportion of oropharyngeal, anal, and other anogenital cancers. Despite the availability of effective vaccines, HPV-associated cancers persist due to persistent infection, immune evasion, and the virus's ability to integrate into the host genome, contributing to molecular heterogeneity and therapeutic resistance. Here, we summarize molecular heterogeneity and the emerging combined therapeutic strategies. High-risk HPV types, notably HPV16 and HPV18, initiate carcinogenesis through persistent infection of epithelial basal cells and through the actions of the E6 and E7 oncoproteins, which disrupt the …

The Matusiflute: Exploring Intercultural Collaboration Through Timbral Dízi Emulation Within An Australian-Chinese Orchestral Performance Setting, Gabriel Mcmahon
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This research investigates how the Matusiflute can potentially promote intercultural Sino Western collaboration within solo, chamber and orchestral settings by consciously applying technical and stylistic codes attributed to the dízi (traverse Chinese bamboo flute). Using an autoethnographic approach, I reflect on my engagement with the dízi, its morphology, timbre and stylistic interpretation, and how my pedagogical flute context impacted this approach. These learnings were then applied to the Matusiflute through two premiere performances of a commissioned intercultural work by Nicholas Ng, The Secret of the Golden Flower (2024) for Matusiflute and Chinese Orchestra. The latter being performed in a solo …

Getting Ready Right: The Impact And Influence Of The University Appointed Supervisor, Madlen Griffiths
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Initial Teacher Education professional experience is a valued component of teacher education courses, where preservice teachers can practise applying what they have learned at university in classroom settings. Key to these experiences are supervisors, who are employed by the university and support these aspiring teachers during their professional experiences. This supervisory role is complex, underrated, under-theorised and under researched. Consequently, this research sought to address this shortfall through an investigation into the perspectives of two of the major stakeholders in these experiences: the preservice teachers and the supervisors.
Adopting a social constructivist methodology, this research examined the stakeholders’ perceptions of …

A Method For Determining A True National Statistical Distribution Of Building Element U-Values And Its Application To A Dataset Underpinning A Building Stock Energy Model, C. Ahern, Bernard Enright, A. Griffin, B. Norton
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
The presence of default U-values in Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) databases disrupts the natural variability in measured U-value distributions. Default values, often used by assessors when empirical data is unavailable, introduce deterministic artefacts into datasets, creating artificial peaks that obscure underlying statistical patterns. This study examines the impact of these default values and identifies appropriate statistical models – Lognormal, Gamma and Normal – for measured U-values in Ireland’s national EPC dataset, comprising 463,582 dwellings. Lognormal and Gamma distributions aligned better with the central peaks, while the Normal distribution more accurately captured the tails. Although no single distribution perfectly fits the …

Water-Efficient Concrete Curing Using Sap-Infused Nonwoven Blankets: Material Screening And Performance Evaluation, Feras Kafiah, Omar K. Omar, Dr Hani Alkhatib
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Concrete curing under hot-weather exposure requires sustained surface moisture while minimizing repeated waterapplication. This study develops and evaluates a two-layer external curing blanket comprising a polyethylene (PE) top sheetand a superabsorbent polymer (SAP)-infused needle-punched nonwoven polyester layer. Ten PE sheets, three sodiumpolyacrylate SAP grades, and three nonwoven fabrics were screened sequentially according to optical transmittance, SAPmorphology and absorption behavior, fabric absorptivity, SAP-fiber integration, and qualitative seven-day surface-wetnessobservations. The selected configuration (S7 PE/SAP 3/GT-80) was then demonstrated using a 1 × 2 m2 outdoor prototypeand compared with conventional wet burlap curing. The blanket-cured concrete produced a numerical mean core strengthof 36.5 …

There’s a lot to dislike about the Supreme Court’s opinion in Cox Communications, Inc. v. Sony Music Entertainment. It mischaracterizes, oversimplifies, and ignores precedent. It fails to engage with important arguments. It mangles the meaning of “intent.” And it introduces uncertainty into the workings of secondary liability across other intellectual property regimes.
For these reasons, the decision doesn’t deserve three cheers. But it deserves two. Because in two important ways, the Supreme Court has succeeded. First, the opinion fixes some misguided appellate court holdings by articulating a relatively workable standard for future copyright cases involving secondary liability. Second, despite …

At first glance, how states execute prisoners is an entirely unattractive question for those who think that states shouldnot be executing prisoners at all. Indeed, one might reasonably take the position that discussions about how states execute presume that executions can be carried out in ways that are acceptable and unacceptable, which is antitheticalto the very core of the abolitionist position. As the renowned Henry Schwarzschild-longtime director of the ACLU's Capital Punishment Project and founder of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty-wrote in 1980, "Theworst sin of all is to do well that which should not be done …

Dismantling The Whiteness Of Legal Education, Doron Samuel-Siegel
Law Faculty Publications
Whiteness is not merely a racial description. Whiteness operates as allegiance to structural racism. The quiet engine of racial hierarchy, whiteness pervades and shapes traditional legal education, rendering legal pedagogy a structurally racist enterprise. Legal education not only reproduces the racism embedded in the law and legal profession, but also obscures the ways legal doctrine, professional norms, and pedagogical practices normalize, protect, and make invisible the advantages that accrue to whiteness itself. In doing so, itproduces lawyers ill-equipped to dismantle structural injustice.
This Article breaks new ground in the scholarship on legal pedagogy by defining whiteness as it operates within …

Exploring The Temporal Dynamics Of Gaming-The-System And Self-Regulated Learning Behaviors Within A Game-Based Learning Environment, Cameron E. Marano
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Consistently monitoring and regulating cognitive and metacognitive skills during learning is difficult. As a result, game-based learning environments (GBLEs) have been designed to provide richer learning experiences. They foster self-regulated learning (SRL) skills and offer a way to study learners' interactions within complex environments. Although SRL in GBLEs has been widely studied, large gaps remain. For example, it is unclear how improper or maladaptive regulation in GBLEs signals gaming-the-system, in which learners manipulate features to avoid authentic learning. This phenomenon is widely studied in intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs). Limited research has examined how and when both gaming-the-system and SRL behaviors …
The Middle Space: Redefining Collaborative Directing In Adaptive American Collegiate Theatre, Tyler J. Simons
The Middle Space: Redefining Collaborative Directing In Adaptive American Collegiate Theatre, Tyler J. Simons
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
This thesis examines collaborative directing as an adaptive, relational practice that exists between rigid hierarchical authorship and fully collectivized creation. Challenging dominant binaries in directing discourse that frame leadership as either singular or egalitarian, this study argues for a “middle space” in which authority, authorship, and responsibility are continually negotiated in response to institutional structures, pedagogical contexts, and interpersonal dynamics. Directing is framed not as a fixed methodology or ideological position, but as a responsive practice shaped by context. Grounded in a practice-as-research (PaR) methodology, the thesis analyzes four productions: Rhinoceros (Theatre UCF, 2024), The Tricks of Scapin (Freedom High …

A commonly observed flow interaction in industrial gas turbine (IGT) exhaust diffuser configurations is investigated, where upstream structural wakes interact with downstream airfoil-like components, potentially leading to unsteady loading. To better understand the mechanisms contributing to this behavior, a scale-model is designed. Dynamic similarity is achieved by matching the Strouhal number (St) of the vortex shedding from the strut. A bell-mouth followed by a swirler is installed in front of the strut to mimic the flow angles at the inlet section of the turbine exhaust. Experiments are conducted for three swirl angles, namely, 30°, 45°, and 60°. Power spectra computed …

Passenger Pigeons, Dodos, Neanderthals, Jordan Alexander
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Passenger Pigeons, Dodos, Neanderthals is a short story collection rooted in Afrofuturism and Southern literature. Passenger Pigeons centers the experiences of queer Black American women in various settings, from Mars to rural Florida. The title story of the collection follows Teri, a human on Mars, attempting to integrate into a society of Martians who exoticize and tokenize her. In this story, I use science fiction as a vehicle to confront the microaggressions and overt racism people of color often experience in professional environments. “Rather Be the Devil,” is a fabulist story detailing the character Man’s journey to find his missing …
Investigating The Association Between Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Pcos) And Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (Iih): A Cross-Sectional Analysis, Savannah L. Adams
Investigating The Association Between Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Pcos) And Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (Iih): A Cross-Sectional Analysis, Savannah L. Adams
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) are chronic conditions that disproportionately affect women of reproductive age and share several metabolic risk factors, including obesity, insulin resistance, and hormonal dysregulation. Despite growing clinical interest in a potential relationship between these conditions, limited research has examined awareness, knowledge, symptom presentation, and barriers to healthcare among young adult populations. The purpose of this study was to investigate awareness, knowledge, perceived healthcare barriers, and potential associations between PCOS and IIH among college-aged individuals. A cross-sectional survey was administered to students aged 18-25 at the University of Central Florida through classroom recruitment …
Using Inferences From Natural Language Narratives To Improve Video Question Answering, Hoang Bao Truong
Using Inferences From Natural Language Narratives To Improve Video Question Answering, Hoang Bao Truong
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
The purpose of this thesis is to examine how structured narrative representation and reasoning strategies jointly affect the performance of Video Question Answering (VideoQA). Although recent advances in large multimodal and language models have improved video description and retrieval, causal and counterfactual reasoning remain challenging. This thesis studies an inference-only pipeline in which videos are converted into natural-language narratives, and those narratives may optionally be transformed into a structured NarrativeML format before multiple-choice questions are answered without task-specific fine-tuning. NarrativeML is a machine-readable narrative representation that explicitly encodes entities, events, and their causal and temporal relations. Three representational contexts are …
