The Efficacy Of Hybrid Manufacturing For High Stress Automotive Parts, Logan Trimmer
The Efficacy Of Hybrid Manufacturing For High Stress Automotive Parts, Logan Trimmer
Harrisburg University Other Works
Presentation covering the broad strokes of the project. The goal was to prove the viability of hybrid/additive manufacturing for high stress automotive applications. This project focused on recreating a piston from an old engine to examine if hybrid manufacturing could be used for such applications. On a small scale, hybrid manufacturing was able to be more cost effective if the costs of the equipment and electricity were ignored. The decision to ignore those costs came from the inability to find accurate prices for industrial casting.

Abca12 Frameshift Deletion In Domestic Cats With Ichthyosis Fetalis, Jeanna M. Blake, Melissa P. Swan, Kari J. Ekenstedt
Veterinary Science Faculty Publications
Background: Ichthyosis fetalis (IF), also known as harlequin ichthyosis, is a rare and often fatal autosomal recessive congenital skin disorder. It is characterized by thickened, hard skin plaques and deep skin fissures that limit mobility and cause malformations of the eyes, lips and ears. Affected individuals are highly susceptible to life-threatening infections due to the disruption of the skin's protective barrier. To date, IF and its genetic basis have not been described in domestic cats.
Objectives: To characterize the gross clinical, histopathological and genetic features of IF in two stray, random-bred domestic short-hair (DSH) littermates.
Animals: Two deceased female neonatal …

Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology Faculty Publications
The current study examined associations between traumatic life events, current and lifetime importance of mental health and substance use treatment, and crack cocaine use among 201 Black men who were incarcerated and nearing community reentry. Results indicated age, sexual trauma and lifetime importance of drug treatment were significantly associated with an increased likelihood of crack cocaine use. Substance abuse treatment in correctional settings should consider culturally tailored assessment and treatment for history of unaddressed sexual trauma among Black men who are incarcerated and use crack cocaine.
The Institutions Of Exceptions: Justification In Trade And Investment Treaties, Julian Arato
The Institutions Of Exceptions: Justification In Trade And Investment Treaties, Julian Arato
Michigan Journal of International Law
International economic law binds states in the interest of liberalizing markets, including in cross-border trade in goods and services (trade) and capital (investment). The treaty regimes for both trade and investment do this by disciplining states through legal rules, while preserving a modicum of governmental authority over domestic policy. The preservation of policy space in these regimes usually involves a process of exceptions-based justification – through formal exceptions clauses in most trade treaties and some investment agreements, and also through informal exceptions-style reasoning by adjudicators in the investment treaty regime more generally. This “exceptions paradigm” of justification has worked well …

Impact Of Bubble-Induced Turbulence On Two-Phase Flow Dynamics At High Void Fraction In A Large Diameter Channel, Sungje Hong, Joshua P. Schlegel, Subash L. Sharma
Impact Of Bubble-Induced Turbulence On Two-Phase Flow Dynamics At High Void Fraction In A Large Diameter Channel, Sungje Hong, Joshua P. Schlegel, Subash L. Sharma
Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study represents the first investigation into the influence of bubble-induced turbulence (BIT) on interfacial area transport mechanisms in gas–liquid two-phase flows under conditions of high void fraction and high velocity in a large diameter channel. Given the unique characteristics of bubble flow in larger channels, the turbulent effects induced by bubbles differ from those observed in smaller channels. However, limited research exists regarding the impact of BIT beyond bubbly flows in large-diameter channels. To address this gap, two approaches for implementing the BIT model are explored: a direct method and an indirect method. This paper assesses both the general …

Wise Beyond Our Years: Menopause, Negative Body-Image, And Art As A Catalyst To Self-Acceptance, Nicole Lea
Art Therapy | Master's Theses
This mixed methods study examined the impact of menopause on women’s body image and self-acceptance through an arts-based group intervention. Quantitative data was collected using the Body Image Self-Compassion Scale, and qualitative data was gathered through art-making, group discussion, and individual interviews. Participants were (n=5) menopausal women aged 46-52 from the Bay Area who reported negative body image related to menopause. The intervention consisted of four one-hour open studio workshops with a fifth meeting added in which participants created altered books while engaging in peer support and discussion. Descriptive statistics indicated an increase in mean body image self-compassion scores from …
Discrepancies In Diagnosis Experience And Ongoing Care Satisfaction Between Pediatric And Adult Type 1 Diabetics (Paper), Hayden Bentz
Discrepancies In Diagnosis Experience And Ongoing Care Satisfaction Between Pediatric And Adult Type 1 Diabetics (Paper), Hayden Bentz
Honors Capstone Projects
Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease which leads to an eventual stopping of insulin production by the body. The disease requires extensive education, management, and collaboration with a patient’s care provider. As such, the patient’s diagnosis experience and ongoing satisfaction with their provider play a large role in their perceived success in managing the disease. T1D can occur in pediatric and adult populations alike. However, historical bias often caused T1D to be overlooked as a diagnosis in adult populations. As a result, discrepancies between pediatric and adult patients may exist with regards to their diagnosis experience and ongoing …
The Innocence Trap, Caitlin Glass, Julian Green
The Innocence Trap, Caitlin Glass, Julian Green
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
What makes a conviction wrongful? Developments in DNA science have led to a wave of exonerations over the past thirty years, revealing sources of error in the criminal legal process. Innocence organizations proliferated to represent people whose convictions could be overturned by newly discovered evidence. This is vital work for the individuals who are released and for the purpose of systemic change. At the same time, a focus on exonerations constructs a relatively narrow conception of wrongful convictions—one that is synonymous with factual innocence.
This Article argues that a broader conception of wrongful convictions may be revealed through co-ideation with …
Regulatory History And Judicial Review, Todd Phillips, Anthony Moffa
Regulatory History And Judicial Review, Todd Phillips, Anthony Moffa
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
The Administrative Procedure Act (APA) requires federal agencies to simply “incorporate in the rules adopted a concise general statement of their basis and purpose” after they receive comments from the public, and the Supreme Court ruled in Overton Park that courts are to adjudicate whether rules are arbitrary and capricious based on agencies’ contemporaneous rationales. Judge-created doctrines incentivize agencies to rely on these “concise” statements to elucidate their rationales, and, as a result, rulemaking preambles have ballooned in size as agencies seek to insulate themselves from critical courts.
This Article contends that although the APA’s statutory requirement is in tension …
The "Miscarriage Of Justice" Exception To Appeal Waiver Enforcement: Debunking And Demystifying The Circuit Split, Bex Warner
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
Ninety-seven percent of all federal criminal convictions come from a plea agreement, and two-thirds of federal plea agreements contain an appeal waiver. The Supreme Court has held that appeal waivers can be enforced, but not under what circumstances. What happens if a criminal defendant waives their right to appeal and then is sentenced to time incarcerated that is higher than the statutory maximum? Or what happens when a defendant claims counsel was ineffective in giving them advice about entering into the plea agreement? Or when a criminal defendant claims the judge gave them a higher sentence because they are Black? …
Integrating Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Into Telepsychiatry: A Professional Development Model For Pmhnps, Catherine A. Roberts
Integrating Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Into Telepsychiatry: A Professional Development Model For Pmhnps, Catherine A. Roberts
DNP Scholarly Projects
Background: Mental illnesses remain among the most prevalent health conditions in the United States, affecting approximately 23% or nearly one in five adults in 2025 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2025); National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH], 2024a). Despite this high prevalence, only 50.6% of adults living with mental health disorders receive treatment (NIMH, 2024a); although the expansion of telepsychiatry has improved access to mental healthcare, medication-management visits are frequently brief and primarily focused on pharmacotherapy thereby limiting opportunities for delivery of psychotherapeutic interventions. This limitation highlights the need for structured, evidence-based psychotherapeutic approaches that can be …
Mansfield And More, Dorothea A. Boulukos
Mansfield And More, Dorothea A. Boulukos
2026
In this paper, I argue that Jane Austen’s treatment of Fanny Price, a character who embodies the conservative feminine ideal, exposes the contradictions within that ideal. I take Hannah More’s 1799 Strictures on the Modern System of Female Education: With the View of the Principles and the Conduct Prevalent Among Women of Rank and Fortune as a paradigmatic representation of this ideal. Fanny is often in agreement with More, not least on the subject of German playwrights, whom both women find subversive. Fanny also obeys many of More’s prescriptions: she is quiet, submissive to male authorities, and prone to self-doubt. …
Occupational Therapy’S Role In The School System: Educating Teachers On The Role Of Occupational Therapy And Providing Them With Sensory Processing Strategies, Kiley N. Carter
OTD Capstone Projects
This capstone project addresses the limited understanding and communication between teachers and occupational therapists (OT) in elementary school settings, particularly in Southern Illinois. Although occupational therapist are essential members of special education teams, teachers often lack clarity about the scope and impact of occupational therapy in schools. The project’s primary aim was to educate teachers about the role of OT and provide them with practical sensory strategies to support students with sensory processing disorders in the classroom. The methodology involved assessing teachers’ needs through observation, reviewing current literature, and collaborating with site and faculty mentors. An educational module and a …
Reframing Coral Reef Monitoring With Machine Learning And Remote Sensing: Detection, Classification, And Change, Gabrielle Ann Trudeau
Reframing Coral Reef Monitoring With Machine Learning And Remote Sensing: Detection, Classification, And Change, Gabrielle Ann Trudeau
Doctoral Dissertations
Coral reefs are vital ecosystems facing rapid decline from climate-driven stressors, yet existing monitoring approaches lack the spatial coverage and temporal resolution needed to capture ecosystem dynamics at meaningful scales. This thesis develops a scalable, integrated remote sensing framework by combining ICESat-2 LiDAR, multispectral imagery, and machine learning to move beyond static habitat maps toward quantitative, multi-factor characterization of reef structure and change. First, machine learning models were applied to ICESat-2-derived rugosity, slope, and bathymetric metrics to detect and delineate coral reef habitats at large scales. Next, a novel nonlinear spectral unmixing approach integrating Planet imagery and ICESat-2 terrain metrics …

Ai-Enabled Urban Decision-Making: From Infrastructure To Policy Implementation, Amir Hosein Taherkhani
Doctoral Dissertations
Urban infrastructure systems face unprecedented compound threats from aging physical stock, climate-driven hazard escalation, and large-scale systemic shocks, yet the analytical tools available to decision-makers remain inadequate in both empirical scope and equity orientation. This dissertation advances urban resilience science along two complementary empirical frontiers. The first investigation develops a deep reinforcement learning framework for socially equitable, flood-aware bridge portfolio maintenance optimization. Using Proximal Policy Optimization, a portfolio of 19 flood-vulnerable bridges in Suffolk County, Massachusetts is optimized over a multi-year planning horizon integrating HAZUS-based flood hazard simulation across four return-period scenarios (10, 50, 100, and 500 years), HEC-18 hydraulic scour …
The Long And Short Of It: Exploring The Essential Dynamics Of Select Geophysical Flows, Adhithiya Sivakumar
The Long And Short Of It: Exploring The Essential Dynamics Of Select Geophysical Flows, Adhithiya Sivakumar
Doctoral Dissertations
Geophysical flows are central to important climatological processes, yet their strong turbulence and additional complexities -- density stratification, wave-current interaction, and phase change -- make analytical prediction and direct numerical simulation infeasible in many regimes. This dissertation adopts a reductionist approach in which simplified representations -- often inspired by observed scale disparities -- are utilized to isolate and investigate the organizing mechanisms of these complex flows. Within this framework, three distinct but thematically connected problems are studied.
We first study Langmuir turbulence in the open ocean, in which surface gravity waves interact with wind-driven currents to organize the mixed layer …
Tighter Bidirectional Heuristic Search And Lazy Optimal Sampling-Based Motion Planning, Yi Wang
Tighter Bidirectional Heuristic Search And Lazy Optimal Sampling-Based Motion Planning, Yi Wang
Doctoral Dissertations
Heuristic search is a core area of artificial intelligence (AI) that explores state spaces using heuristic estimates to support planning and decision-making. In robotics, motion planning is a fundamental problem of computing feasible robot motion under constraints. A central challenge shared by both domains is how to substantially reduce unnecessary computation while preserving strong theoretical guarantees, such as completeness and optimality.
In response to this challenge, each domain has developed its own distinct methodological paradigms. In heuristic search, approaches broadly fall into unidirectional and bidirectional paradigms. Unidirectional heuristic search (Uni-HS) has a mature ecosystem, supported by decades of theory and …

The limitations of the paper-based process have become increasingly visible in the COVID-19 crisis. The main purpose of the article is to analyze the application of blockchain bills of lading, which utilizes computational logic to create the digital ledger, and users can set up algorithms and rules to …
Intelligent Formation Control Using Orfbls And Adaptive Backstepping Sliding-Mode Control To Address Uncertain Tilting In Multi-Quadrotors During Wind Gusts, Ching-Chih Tsai, Chun-Fu Mao, Kumail Hussain
Intelligent Formation Control Using Orfbls And Adaptive Backstepping Sliding-Mode Control To Address Uncertain Tilting In Multi-Quadrotors During Wind Gusts, Ching-Chih Tsai, Chun-Fu Mao, Kumail Hussain
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In terms of aerial robotics, stable and precise formation control is a significant challenge for tilting multi-quadrotors during disturbances. This paper proposes a fixed-time formation control strategy for tilting multi-quadrotors to address the effect of external wind gusts. The observer accurately predicts environmental disturbances and an adaptive backstepping sliding-mode control (ABSMC) method with an output recurrent fuzzy broad learning system (ORFBLS) addresses these disturbances within a finite time. ORFBLS dynamically adjusts its structure through a growing ORFBLS structure to allow nodes to be added as needed. The method's stability is validated using Lyapunov stability theory and ensures the convergence of …

Visually Guided Landing System On Ship Deck For Multicopter, Dong-Lin Li, Shih-Kai Lee, Tzu-Hsiang Chou
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Traditionally, high-value fish have been located at sea using helicopters. However, with advancements in technology, maritime drones have become increasingly important in recent years. Compared to traditional helicopter-based methods, drones offer significantly lower operational costs, making them cost-effective. However, the challenging sea conditions, including strong winds and the swaying motion of vessels, pose significant challenges for drone landings.
This paper proposes a stable approach for multicopter landing on ships at sea, incorporating improved marker detection, enhanced wind resistance control, and more accurate deck motion prediction. In the marker detection phase, we introduce a method to improve the accuracy of ArUco …

Leveraging Virtual Reality And Haptics To Teach Surgical Skills: A Usability Study On Retropubic Midurethral Slings, Lauren Siff, Ginger S. Watson, Jerome Dixon, Moshe Feldman, Franklin Bost, Philippe J. Giabbanelli
VMASC Publications
Traditional methods to learn soft-tissue surgical procedures rely on cadaver labs or patient-based learning, which are costly and geographically limited, and raise ethical questions. Virtual reality (VR) with haptic feedback offers a scalable alternative, but most current platforms emphasize bone-based rather than soft-tissue procedures learned by feel. We developed a VR+haptic simulation for preoperative training of retropubic midurethral sling (MUS) surgery. This study examines the usability of this platform with thirteen expert urogynecologic surgeons and subsequently makes improvements (e.g., in haptics) to evaluate the platform with twelve trainees based on the NASA Task Load Index for workload and a UTAUT-informed …
Using Remote Sensing Technology To Develop A Framework For Improving Hydrologic Models, Marissa Cook
Using Remote Sensing Technology To Develop A Framework For Improving Hydrologic Models, Marissa Cook
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
With increased storm intensity due to climate change and urbanization, flash flooding has become an increasingly significant issue globally and regionally. Although the factors influencing urban flash flooding are well-known, there is a growing need for technology to accurately and remotely predict the chance of a flash flood occurring from any given rain event to give people time to prepare. This study aims to use multispectral satellite imagery to provide a framework for improving near real-time flood predictions in an urban area of a high gradient, fourth order stream impacted by flooding. Specifically, we utilize satellite imagery to create the …

A Variance Decomposition Approach To Inconclusives In Forensic Black Box Studies, Amanda Luby, Joseph B. Kadane
A Variance Decomposition Approach To Inconclusives In Forensic Black Box Studies, Amanda Luby, Joseph B. Kadane
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Work
In the USA, ‘black box’ studies are increasingly being used to estimate the error rate of forensic disciplines. A sample of forensic examiner participants is asked to evaluate a set of items whose source is known to the researchers but not to the participants. Participants are asked to make a source determination (typically an identification, exclusion, or some kind of inconclusive). We study inconclusives in two black box studies, one on fingerprints and one on bullets. Rather than treating all inconclusive responses as functionally correct (as is the practice in reported error rates in the two studies we address), irrelevant …

Different Destinations: Clarifying And Addressing Pipeline Problems For Women In Academic Archaeology, Scott R. Hutson, Jaycee Castro, Bruno Athie Teruel
Anthropology Faculty Publications
In STEM fields, women tend to leak out of the pipeline to the professoriate. In archaeology, however, robust databases and chronological control reveal that there is no leakage from earning a PhD to tenure-track positions. Nor is there a leak from assistant professor to associate professor. Nevertheless, men get hired as faculty in PhD programs more often than women. This is important because PhD programs are research-intensive and train future leaders. Furthermore, women PhD students have women as advisers more than often men and report advantages to this arrangement. Yet with fewer women faculty in PhD programs, women mentors are …

Chirp Imaging In Extant Lakes And Reservoirs, Kevin L. Woller, Edward W. Woolery, Eva C. Lyon, Michael M. Mcglue
Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications
Compressed high-intensity radiated pulse (CHIRP) acoustic reflection data acquired in lakes and other shallow water bodies can provide detailed imaging that is valuable for environmental and engineering geology applications well below the sub-bottom floors. However, it is often unclear to non-specialists which acquisition settings should be considered to achieve optimal imaging quality when beginning a new survey, particularly in an unfamiliar environment. We review fundamental concepts for optimizing signal design using coincident CHIRP lines from two extant glacial lakes in the eastern Sierra Nevada of California: Convict Lake and June Lake. As part of the optimization process, seismic data were …

Entry Level Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstone Projects Class of 2026
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a diagnosis that affects many school-aged children (CDC, 2025). Autistic children can have more difficulties engaging with both their peers and their families, which can lead to a lack of social participation. A World of Connection: ASD was a doctoral capstone project centering on social participation for autistic youth. The project blended the capstone student’s expanded knowledge in performing arts with their education in Occupational Therapy to create a 4-part capstone experience. A scoping review targeting the question “what are the most effective performing arts methods to enhance the social participation of autistic children” yielded 9 …
Autonomous Uav Mission Planning Under Threat Using Model Predictive Control With Proportional-Navigation Pursuers, Mehmet B. Ozcelik
Autonomous Uav Mission Planning Under Threat Using Model Predictive Control With Proportional-Navigation Pursuers, Mehmet B. Ozcelik
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses
Autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operating in contested environments must
complete mission objectives while avoiding restricted regions, radar exposure, and pos-
sible interception. This thesis develops a MATLAB-based simulation framework for
two-dimensional UAV mission planning under threat using model predictive control and
proportional-navigation chasers. The mission requires the UAV to travel from a start
location to a goal while visiting required checkpoints and avoiding no-fly zones and radar
regions. A chaser attempts to intercept the UAV using either a basic pure-pursuit-style
law or a proportional-navigation guidance law.
The framework integrates environment generation, augmented visibility-graph rout-
ing, waypoint management, UAV kinematic …
Llm-Driven Closed-Loop Uav Control With Obstacle-Aware Model Predictive Control, Halimcan Yasar
Llm-Driven Closed-Loop Uav Control With Obstacle-Aware Model Predictive Control, Halimcan Yasar
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses
This thesis presents a closed-loop control architecture for uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) in which a large language model (LLM) serves as a high-level decision module operating over a persistent, metric 3D world model.
Rather than generating low-level commands or open-loop plans, the LLM selects one parameterized maneuver per decision step from a small, verified library of flight primitives conditioned on a structured representation of the drone state, tracked object positions, and mission specification.
Translational motion is executed by a planar model predictive controller (MPC) with soft obstacle avoidance, using obstacle hypotheses provided by the LLM, so that safety-critical constraint handling …
