Examining Obsessive-Compulsive Symptomatology And Maternal Functioning During The Postpartum Period: Implications For Disclosure And Assessment, Meghan Collins Jan 2026

Examining Obsessive-Compulsive Symptomatology And Maternal Functioning During The Postpartum Period: Implications For Disclosure And Assessment, Meghan Collins

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Maternal mental health is a significant global health concern, with nearly one in five new mothers experiencing a mental health disorder during the perinatal period. Timely screening, assessment, and treatment are critical for the well-being of both mother and infant, given the potential adverse effects of unaddressed mental health concerns. While much of the existing literature has focused on perinatal depression and anxiety, research specifically examining obsessive-compulsive symptoms and unwanted or intrusive thoughts remains limited. The present study investigated the relationship between obsessive-compulsive symptoms and maternal functioning, as well as experiences related to the assessment and disclosure of intrusive thoughts. …

Restorative Restitution, Lula Hagos Jan 2026

Restorative Restitution, Lula Hagos

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

How to best meet the needs of crime victims while also furthering the imperative of decarceration has long vexed advocates and scholars alike. This dilemma comes into sharp focus when one examines two developments in criminal procedure that, until now, have been analyzed separately: victim restitution and restorative justice.

Criminal restitution, the monetary payments ordered from defendants to victims, often fails both groups. Because most defendants are indigent, restitution obligations lengthen defendants’ involvement with the criminal legal system without delivering meaningful compensation to victims, making restitution more symbolic than restorative. At the same time, interest in restorative justice has surged …

Chapter 2: Do We Still Believe In Process? Democracy And The Fundamental Value Of Dialog Across Difference, Paul S. Berman Jan 2026

Chapter 2: Do We Still Believe In Process? Democracy And The Fundamental Value Of Dialog Across Difference, Paul S. Berman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This essay surveys a few of the many ways to understand what democracy actually is and how to evaluate when it exists and when it is lost. Ultimately, I argue for a pluralist vision that emphasizes both democracy and law's potential ability to bring multiple communities and differing worldviews into dialog with each other. But no conception of democracy can survive unless people are willing to embrace the idea that a fair process can lead to an undesired outcome and that, therefore, even those who lose in a process can have sufficient faith in that process to abide by and …

An Integrated Evaluation Of Trace Mineral Status, Regional Variation, And Supplementation Effects On Circulating Mineral And Reproductive Performance In American Plains Bison, Bailey M. Rodriguez Jan 2026

An Integrated Evaluation Of Trace Mineral Status, Regional Variation, And Supplementation Effects On Circulating Mineral And Reproductive Performance In American Plains Bison, Bailey M. Rodriguez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The continued expansion of the American Plains Bison (Bison bison) industry has increased the need for science-based nutritional recommendations tailored specifically to the species, due to limited species-specific research. Because trace minerals influence immune function, growth, and reproductive performance, establishing baseline mineral status and evaluating responses to supplementation are critical for advancing bison production and conservation efforts. This thesis integrates two complementary investigations to evaluate trace mineral status in American Plains bison at both regional and herd management levels. First, a herd level comparison evaluated the influence of differing mineral supplementation strategies on circulating mineral concentrations, herd performance, and reproductive …

Winter-Feeding High Forage Vs. High Concentrate Diets To Beef Cows: Effects On Placental Transcriptomics, Lactation Capacity, And Enteric Methane Emissions, Megan Ann Wehrbein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nutritional management and lactation performance are critical factors influencing productivity in cattle. This research includes two complementary studies. The first study was a meta-analysis to develop a lactation curve for Bos taurus cattle in North America using data from machine or hand milked cows. Data from 7 studies were used resulting in 1340 cow-day observations. Milk yield was analyzed by parity (primiparous or multiparous) and feeding management (non-nutrient restricted or nutrient restricted), revealing that primiparous cattle peaked earlier and at lower yields than multiparous cattle, and nutrient restriction reduced peak milk yield. Overall, Bos taurus cattle followed lactation trends similar …

Evaluating Methodologies For Estimating Enteric Emissions And Modeling Greenfeed Technology Utilization In Extensive Beef And Bison Grazing Systems, Aletta Laura Husmann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from grazing ruminants represent a significant component of U.S. agricultural emissions. However, enteric methane (CH4) from cow– calf systems on extensive rangelands pose substantial measurement and management challenges. The Northern Great Plains (NGP) supports nearly one-quarter of the U.S. beef cow population, yet regionally representative, herd-level enteric emission data from commercial ranches remain limited. This thesis integrates empirical field measurements with modeling approaches to evaluate the feasibility of quantifying enteric emissions on extensive rangelands and to examine system-level drivers influencing data yield, costs, and operational performance. Enteric methane and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were measured from …

Faster Than The Speed Of Law: Data Privacy And Judicial Deference In Matters Of Technological Development And Social Media, Andrew A. Bohon Jan 2026

Faster Than The Speed Of Law: Data Privacy And Judicial Deference In Matters Of Technological Development And Social Media, Andrew A. Bohon

Missouri Law Review

Judge Richard Posner, formerly of the Seventh Circuit, once wrote, “the courtroom is not the place for scientific guesswork, even of the inspired sort. Law lags science; it does not lead it.” The particular occasion for this maxim was a case in which Judge Posner disregarded the testimony of an expert witness who claimed the use of a nicotine patch had caused the plaintiff to suffer a heart attack—a claim with “no backing from scientific theory or data.” Cutting-edge technology is antithetical to the law, which is better-suited to an era of horse-drawn carriages and often requires judicial guesswork to …

A Program To Increase Prenatal And Postnatal Care Access In A Rural Kentucky County, Alyssa Thomas

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Prenatal and postpartum health care access is necessary for positive pregnancy and postpartum outcomes. Many rural areas in the United States are facing maternity care deserts, where there are no obstetric services available in their county. Maternity care deserts typically have higher rates in maternal mortality, low-birth weight, and pre-term births. Fleming County, Kentucky is a small rural community with a population of about 15,000 that is a maternity care desert. To improve prenatal and postpartum care access in this county, this program will use a mobile health clinic and community health workers (CHWs). The mobile health clinic will operate …

Implementation Of A Reminder/Recall Messaging Program In Kentucky, Laura Schwarz

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Childhood vaccination remains a critical public health priority, yet measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination rates in several rural Kentucky counties fall below the 95% threshold required for herd immunity. Recent declines in coverage, compounded by socioeconomic disparities and barriers to healthcare access, place children at increased risk for vaccine-preventable diseases and outbreaks. This capstone project proposes the implementation of an evidence-based reminder/recall (R/R) text messaging intervention utilizing the Kentucky Immunization Registry (KYIR) to improve timely MMR vaccination among children aged 4–6 years before kindergarten entry.

The proposed program targets thirteen Kentucky counties with vaccination rates below 70% and documented …

Scalable Quantum Network Routing Through Reinforcement Learning And Resource Optimization, Tasdiqul Islam Jan 2026

Scalable Quantum Network Routing Through Reinforcement Learning And Resource Optimization, Tasdiqul Islam

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations

Long-distance quantum communication depends on distributing high-delity entanglement across quantum repeaters. Entangled states are fragile: they decohere in memory, are consumed when used, and lose delity after each swap. Quantum routing therefore diers from classical routing: an algorithm must decide not only the path, but when to generate, store, swap, and consume entanglement before they lose their usefulness. This dissertation studies scalable resource allocation and routing for quantum networks under delity, memory, and concurrency constraints. It rst addresses re- peater deployment with heuristics that nd near-optimal locations while cutting com- putation from days to seconds versus integer linear programming (ILP). …

Early Detection And Objective Assessment Of Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy Severity, Soheila Norasteh Jan 2026

Early Detection And Objective Assessment Of Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy Severity, Soheila Norasteh

Bioengineering Dissertations

Hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a neonatal brain injury caused by reduced oxygen and blood flow to the brain around the time of birth. It remains a major cause of neonatal mortality and long-term neurodevelopmental impairment worldwide. Therapeutic hypothermia is the standard treatment for moderate-to severe HIE and improves outcomes when initiated within the first six hours of life. Therefore, accurate assessment of injury severity during this period is essential. Cur rently, HIE severity is determined primarily through neurological examination and classified as mild, moderate, or severe. However, these examinations are subjective, cannot provide continuous monitoring of brain function, and may …

Reliable And Label-Efficient Learning For Open-World Visual Perception And Robot Learning Under Uncertainty, Zongyao Lyu

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations

Modern learning systems deployed in open-world environments must make reliable decisions despite predictive uncertainty, previously unseen classes, limited annotations, and distribution shifts. This dissertation develops methods for reliable and label-efficient learning in visual perception and robot control.

First, this work studies uncertainty in object detection by representing semantic and spatial predictions probabilistically. A deep-ensemble framework aggregates detections into class-probability distributions and probabilistic bounding boxes, while a subsequent extension combines deep ensembles with Monte Carlo dropout to further investigate predictive uncertainty. Second, this dissertation addresses open-set recognition, where classes absent during training may appear at inference time. An empirical study shows …

Oyster Drill (Stramonita Haemastoma Complex) Habitat Preferences In A Shallow Coastal Estuary, Coen Mcgarrah, Cynthia Lupton, Eric Sparks, Jennifer L. Debose

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Southern oyster drill snails (Stramonita haemastoma complex) are nuisance organisms within the Gulf of Mexico. This is due to their damaging impact on recovering and farmed oyster (Crassostrea virginica) populations, which are one of the drills’ main food sources. Oyster reef recovery and increased aquaculture production are priorities for Mississippi and the wider northern Gulf coast. The Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) hosts multiple oyster reef restoration sites within its boundaries, yet no comprehensive survey of oyster drill abundance has been conducted in this area to date. Additionally, knowledge of oyster drill preferences for sediment …

This book arrives precisely when such reflection is most needed.

Exploring K-2 Teachers’ Perspectives Around Screen Time In Blended Learning Classrooms, Cameryn Lee Ronspies Jan 2026

Exploring K-2 Teachers’ Perspectives Around Screen Time In Blended Learning Classrooms, Cameryn Lee Ronspies

Dissertations and Theses

The integration of digital technologies in primary education has transformed instructional practices, yet the use of screen time in K-2 classrooms remains a debated issue. While prior research has examined the effects of screen time on children’s development and learning outcomes, little is known about how teachers themselves make decisions regarding its use in the classroom. This study explores how K-2 teachers in blended learning environments navigate the complexities of screen time. Despite debate among researchers, few policies exist to guide teachers in regulating the quality and duration of screen use, leaving teachers to make complex decisions independently. Grounded in …

Culturally Responsive Dialectical Behavior Therapy With Chinese Sexual And Gender Minority Individuals: A Qualitative Study, Weiyi Liao M.S. Jan 2026

Culturally Responsive Dialectical Behavior Therapy With Chinese Sexual And Gender Minority Individuals: A Qualitative Study, Weiyi Liao M.S.

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Professional guidelines emphasize the importance of adapting evidence-based treatments to the cultural and contextual needs of minoritized populations. Although substantial research has examined lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) mental health, comparatively little is known about the psychotherapy experiences of Chinese sexual and gender minority individuals or how dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may be delivered responsively with this population. DBT is an evidence-based treatment for emotion dysregulation, self-harm, and suicidal behavior that explicitly addresses the effects of invalidating environments. Because Chinese cultural contexts and LGBTQ-related minority stress may both shape emotional expression, help-seeking, and treatment experiences, this qualitative study …

Post-Boom(Er) Maximalism In The Americas: Valeria Luiselli's “Lost Children Archive”, Antonio Barrenechea Jan 2026

Post-Boom(Er) Maximalism In The Americas: Valeria Luiselli's “Lost Children Archive”, Antonio Barrenechea

English & Linguistics Articles

This article poses an alternative non-Anglophone starting point for twenty-first century maximalism through the Latin American Boom and “la novela total” that is its crowning achievement. Among such works are Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) and Carlos Fuentes’s Terra Nostra (1975). The term’s 1960s conception by Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa predates Thomas Pynchon as figurehead for maximalist theorizing within First World academic environments that control the conversation. Furthermore, I examine Mexican author Valeria Luiselli’s Lost Children Archive (2019) as a case of post-Boom(er) maximalism that differs from the big novels of the Latin American luminaries. …

Feral Horses And Native Ungulates: Evaluating The Potential For Competition In Predator–Prey Communities Of Alberta’S Upper Foothills, Birch Gano Jan 2026

Feral Horses And Native Ungulates: Evaluating The Potential For Competition In Predator–Prey Communities Of Alberta’S Upper Foothills, Birch Gano

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Feral herbivores are expanding in range and numbers globally, yet their community-level effects in ecosystems are poorly resolved. We evaluated whether feral horses reshape predator–prey–vegetation dynamics in Alberta’s Upper Foothills, Canada, through two pathways; i) potential exploitative competition for forage and ii) apparent competition via shared predators. We combined fecal DNA metabarcoding with remote wildlife cameras to quantify diets, spatiotemporal co-occurrence, and the role of horses in carnivore diet. We analyzed 241 ungulate scats (feral horses, elk, bighorn sheep, cattle, moose, and deer), 96 combined camera-years at 23 sites, and 190 carnivore scats (wolves, cougars, coyotes, bears) from 2023–2025. The …
