The “External Element” Of The Obligation To Ensure Respect For The Geneva Conventions: A Matter Of Treaty Interpretation, Marten Zwanenburg Mar 2021

The “External Element” Of The Obligation To Ensure Respect For The Geneva Conventions: A Matter Of Treaty Interpretation, Marten Zwanenburg

International Law Studies

In Common Article 1 of the 1949 Geneva Conventions, States Parties undertake to “respect and ensure respect” for the Conventions. This article focuses on the question whether an interpretation of that provision leads to the conclusion that it contains an external element. The term “External element” refers to an obligation for States to ensure respect for the Conventions not only internally (i.e., by their nationals as a whole), but also by other States, and possibly even by organized armed groups involved in extraterritorial non-international armed conflicts. The article applies the rules of treaty interpretation, as codified in Articles 31 – …

Wider Vision: Enriching Convolutional Neural Networks Via Alignment To External Knowledge Bases, Xuehao Liu, Sarah Jane Delany, Susan Mckeever Mar 2021

Wider Vision: Enriching Convolutional Neural Networks Via Alignment To External Knowledge Bases, Xuehao Liu, Sarah Jane Delany, Susan Mckeever

Conference papers

Deep learning models suffer from opaqueness. For Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), current research strategies for explaining models focus on the target classes within the associated training dataset. As a result, the understanding of hidden feature map activations is limited by the discriminative knowledge gleaned during training. The aim of our work is to explain and expand CNNs models via the mirroring or alignment of the network to an external knowledge base. This will allow us to give a semantic context or label for each visual feature. Using the resultant aligned embedding space, we can match CNN feature activations to nodes …

The Mediating Role Of Pain Catastrophizing On The Association Between Depression And Pain Severity And Interference Among Elderly Asian Immigrants With Chronic Pain, Hee Jun Kim, Hyunjeong Park, Hee-Soon Juon

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

Purpose: The association between depression and chronic pain is well established. However, few studies have examined the pathways from depression to chronic pain. The present cross-cultural study aimed to test the mediating effects of pain catastrophizing on associations between depression and chronic pain (eg, pain severity, pain intensity) among Korean American elderly.

Patients and Methods: A total of 132 elderly Korean Americans with chronic pain were recruited from elderly daycare centers and Korean ethnic churches in the community. For mediation analyses, structural equation modeling with full information maximum likelihood estimation method was used. The bias-corrected bootstrap confidence interval (CI) method …

Proximity To Power: The Challenges And Strategies Of Interviewing Elites In Higher Education Research, Kevin Mcclure, Jon L. Mcnaughtan Mar 2021

Proximity To Power: The Challenges And Strategies Of Interviewing Elites In Higher Education Research, Kevin Mcclure, Jon L. Mcnaughtan

The Qualitative Report

Presidents, provosts, deans, and other upper-level administrators in higher education fit common definitions of “elites” in the context of qualitative research. Scholarship on methods specific to the field of higher education has not identified or described the unique challenges of interviewing these and other elites. The purpose of this paper is to examine challenges and share strategies for elite interviewing, with specific application to qualitative research in the field of higher education. We provide three examples of empirical studies involving elite interviewing and, using literature from other fields, highlight challenges and strategies. By anticipating challenges and implementing these strategies, researchers …

A Real-World Negotiation Task For Real-Time (Synchronous) Learning, Sonia Goltz Mar 2021

A Real-World Negotiation Task For Real-Time (Synchronous) Learning, Sonia Goltz

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

This paper describes a negotiation task designed to introduce negotiation concepts to business students experientially in a manner that also has real consequences for the students. Students negotiate for a variety of actual items that they can take home or use in other ways. Furthermore, the task, previously done only in face-to-face classes, was recently reorganized to include both in person and remotely attending students. Both in person and remote students participate in the process and debriefing, and typically report that they enjoyed the exercise and felt engaged. This activity helps answer the need to provide complex and messy experiences …

Environmental Justice, Settler Colonialism, And More-Than-Humans In The Occupied West Bank: An Introduction, Irus Braverman

Journal Articles

Our special issue provides a first-of-its kind attempt to examine environmental injustices in the occupied West Bank through interdisciplinary perspectives, pointing to the broader settler colonial and neoliberal contexts within which they occur and to their more-than-human implications. Specifically, we seek to understand what environmental justice—a movement originating from, and rooted in, the United States—means in the context of Palestine/Israel. Moving beyond the settler-native dialectic, we draw attention to the more-than-human flows that occur in the region—which include water, air, waste, cement, trees, donkeys, watermelons, and insects—to consider the dynamic, and often gradational, meanings of frontier, enclosure, and Indigeneity in …

Using Ai To Diagnose Covid-19 From Patient Chest Ct Scans, Samuel Arellano, Liang Huang, Joe Jiang, Kenneth Richardson, Omar Yasser

SMU Data Science Review

Rapid and accurate detection of COVID-19 remains the best weapon to control and prevent the spread of this pandemic, at least before a vaccine or treatment is available. In this study, we trained our custom computer vision models to predict COVID-19 from patients’ CT scans. We trained one model using Google’s AutoML Vision platform and achieved comparable accuracy with previously reported models. We also trained several custom models using transfer learning by taking advantage of several well-unknown pre-trained computer vision models, including Resnet and Inception models. The models are fine-tuned with a relatively large dataset and their high accuracy should …

Automatic Removal Of Artifacts In 360° Videos, Eric Cosky

Defensive Publications Series

Many 360° videos captured using a camera rig and tripod setup have artifacts related to the tripod that the rig is attached to. This disclosure describes automatic removal of such artifacts by use of machine learning techniques. Portions of the video that include artifacts are detected and removed automatically using trained machine learning model(s). The ML models are trained to recognize production equipment based on videos captured in neutral environments or based on markers on the production equipment. The detected artifacts are automatically replaced based on the context and ensuring that the resultant video is stable.

Laboratory Determination Of Coal Dust Cleaning Efficacy Of A Fibrous Filter For Flooded-Bed Dust Scrubber, Neeraj Gupta, Ashish Ranjan Kumar, Steven Schafrik Mar 2021

Laboratory Determination Of Coal Dust Cleaning Efficacy Of A Fibrous Filter For Flooded-Bed Dust Scrubber, Neeraj Gupta, Ashish Ranjan Kumar, Steven Schafrik

Mining Engineering Faculty Publications

Fibrous-type dust filters are used in flooded-bed dust scrubbers to capture dust from underground room and pillar mining atmospheres. They have 10–30 layers of finely woven strands that trap particles through the interception and impaction process. A full-cone water spray is installed upstream of the filter, which floods the screen. A scrubber’s efficacy is usually measured and reported in terms of reduction in gravimetric dust concentration at a known location in a mine. This paper reports the particle-size-dependent dust removal efficiency of a fibrous filter obtained from an instrumented test-set up. A variable frequency drive and an inline flow control …

Sandi Richey, Wilmer Amina Carter Foundation

Bridges Digital Archive: Audio and Video Recordings

Sandra Richey describes moving to Redlands in 1972, where she had to navigate a wealthy white culture that frequently exposed her to subtle forms of racism and a strong sense of entitlement. She began working as a librarian at the University of Redlands in 1974. Though she had no prior library experience, she believes the University hired her because of ongoing student protests against the University's lack of diversity among faculty. While working at University of Redlands, she also experienced racism, and she speaks eloquently about the difficulties of often being the only Black person in so many spaces, for …

According to the Migration Policy Institute (MPI), an estimated 11.3 million undocumented immigrants reside in United States (U.S.) of which 53 percent are Mexican (Gelatt & Zong, 2018). Many of these immigrants have not been able to see their families in Mexico for numerous years. Due to the lack of documentation, it is difficult to determine the exact number of separated families. By considering remittance inflow to Mexico, that is, money sent from individuals in the U.S. to individuals in Mexico, the researcher can gain an understanding of how many Mexican families exist in a state of separation (Orozco, 2015). …

The Thorns Of Trauma: Torture, Aftermath, And Healing In Contemporary Fairy-Tale Literature, Jeana Jorgensen Mar 2021

The Thorns Of Trauma: Torture, Aftermath, And Healing In Contemporary Fairy-Tale Literature, Jeana Jorgensen

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

While classical fairy tales do not portray much depth of suffering, many contemporary fairy-tale retellings explore trauma and its aftermath in great detail. This article analyzes depictions of trauma in fairy tales, utilizing as a primary case study the “Beauty and the Beast” retelling A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas, arguing that this text provides a scientifically accurate representation of trauma and its aftermath, thereby articulating the real in fairy tales. Further, this article classifies that work as not simply a “dark” fairy tale (a contentious term that invites rethinking) but rather as fairy-tale torture porn, …

Short-Term And Long-Term Effects Of New Light Rail Transit Service On Transit Ridership And Traffic Congestion At Two Geographical Levels, Huajie Yang

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation quantitatively examines the effect of new Light Rail Transit (LRT) services on transit ridership and traffic congestion over time at two different geographical levels: at the corridor level, this study conducts case studies of two LRT lines in the Portland, Oregon region; at the regional level, this study uses a synthetic control method to construct a "synthetic" control Urbanized Area (UA) that closely approximates the counterfactual transit ridership and traffic congestion scenario in the absence of light rail project in three UAs across America. The results of the corridor-level study suggest that both LRT lines increased transit ridership …

The Dark Triad And Impulsivity: Predictors And Correlates Of Workplace Representative Task Problem Solving And Decision Making, Peter Kendall Glazer Jr. Mar 2021

The Dark Triad And Impulsivity: Predictors And Correlates Of Workplace Representative Task Problem Solving And Decision Making, Peter Kendall Glazer Jr.

Dissertations and Theses

This research investigated group and individual differences in decision-making and problem-solving on workplace representative tasks, and whether certain personality traits correlated with or were predictors of participant strategy. In parallel studies done online (N = 214) and in-person (N = 80) with Portland State University undergraduate School of Business students, performance was measured on two workplace representative tasks under two different difficulty conditions. The Number Place experiment resulted in two major findings: First, when given a comparatively easy task, women had more Time Remaining than men. However, this was moderated by the difficulty condition, such that men had more Time …

Can Subjective Pain Be Inferred From Objective Physiological Data? Evidence From Patients With Sickle Cell Disease, Mark J. Panaggio, Daniel M. Abrams, Fan Yang, Tanvi Banerjee, Nirmish R. Shah Mar 2021

Can Subjective Pain Be Inferred From Objective Physiological Data? Evidence From Patients With Sickle Cell Disease, Mark J. Panaggio, Daniel M. Abrams, Fan Yang, Tanvi Banerjee, Nirmish R. Shah

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) experience lifelong struggles with both chronic and acute pain, often requiring medical interventMaion. Pain can be managed with medications, but dosages must balance the goal of pain mitigation against the risks of tolerance, addiction and other adverse effects. Setting appropriate dosages requires knowledge of a patient's subjective pain, but collecting pain reports from patients can be difficult for clinicians and disruptive for patients, and is only possible when patients are awake and communicative. Here we investigate methods for estimating SCD patients' pain levels indirectly using vital signs that are routinely collected and documented in …

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

The periosteal and endosteal surfaces of mature bone are densely innervated by sensory nerves expressing TrkA, the high-affinity receptor for nerve growth factor (NGF). In previous work, we demonstrated that administration of exogenous NGF significantly increased load-induced bone formation through the activation of Wnt signaling. However, the translational potential of NGF is limited by the induction of substantial mechanical and thermal hyperalgesia in mice and humans. Here, we tested the effect of gambogic amide (GA), a recently identified robust small molecule agonist for TrkA, on hyperalgesia and load-induced bone formation. Behavioral analysis was used to assess pain up to one …

The Economics Of Class Action Waivers, Albert H. Choi, Kathryn E. Spier Mar 2021

The Economics Of Class Action Waivers, Albert H. Choi, Kathryn E. Spier

Law & Economics Working Papers

Many firms require consumers, employees, and suppliers to sign class action waivers as a condition of doing business with the firm, and the US Supreme Court has endorsed companies' ability to block class actions through mandatory individual arbitration clauses. Are class action waivers serving the interests of society or are they facilitating socially harmful business practices?

This paper synthesizes and extends the existing law and economics literature by analyzing the firms' incentive to impose class action waivers. While in many settings the firms’ incentive to block class actions may be aligned with maximizing social welfare, in many other settings it …
