Reported Self-Efficacy Of Nursing Clinical Instructors In A Bachelor's Of Science In Nursing (Bsn) Program, Annette Ferguson, Natalie Perry
Nursing Faculty Research
Clinical instructors play a significant role in the development of safe and competent nursing students. When nurses beginning their career as a clinical instructor, a substantial gap in knowledge can existence in the expectations of this new role. A deficiency of formal education in nursing education or orientation to this position can lead to a lack of self-efficacy and knowledge among clinical instructors. Research supports that a formal orientation and training increases feelings of self-efficacy among clinical instructors. The purpose of this study was to evaluate an online educational program on clinical instructor’s knowledge and self-efficacy towards teaching in a …

Psychological And Physiological Stress And Burnout Among Maternity Providers In A Rural County In Kenya: Individual And Situational Predictors, Patience A. Afulani, Linnet Ongeri, Joyceline Kinyua, Marleen Temmerman, Wendy Berry Mendes, Sandra J. Weiss
Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa
Background: Stress and burnout among healthcare workers has been recognized as a global crisis needing urgent attention. Yet few studies have examined stress and burnout among healthcare providers in sub-Saharan Africa, and even fewer among maternity providers who work under very stressful conditions. To address these gaps, we examined self-reported stress and burnout levels as well as stress-related physiologic measures of these providers, along with their potential predictors.
Methods: Participants included 101 maternity providers (62 nurses/midwives, 16 clinical officers/doctors, and 23 support staff) in western Kenya. Respondents completed Cohen’s Perceived Stress Scale, the Shirom-Melamed Burnout scale, and other …

Laudato Si’ – A Macromarketing Manifesto For A Just And Sustainable Environment, Thomas A. Klein, Gene R. Laczniak
Marketing Faculty Research and Publications
This paper posits that Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical on environmental climate change, Laudato si’ (“Praise be to you, my Lord”), or LS for short, provides a compelling and multi-faceted framework for co-creating a just and sustainable environment. LS includes considerable commentary about how markets and marketing impact the physical and social environment. Additionally, the document provides religion-inspired ethical norms for market conditions, actions, and performance that reflect both (a) the social teachings of the Catholic Church as they have evolved over the past 125 years and, as we will explain, (b) a foundational predicate of macromarketing scholarship – that is, …

Non-Nuclear Methods For Compaction Control Of Unbound Soil And Granular Layers, Brad Rister, Charlie Sun, Kean H. Ashurst Jr., Tim Jones, Christopher Van Dyke
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
In highway construction, the nuclear density gauge (NDG) is the industry standard for measuring soil density and moisture. They are widely used at state transportation agencies, however, because of their reliance on radiation, NDGs are expensive to maintain and have unique storage requirements. Operators must also earn specialized certifications and adhere to rigorous safety protocols. Equipment manufacturers have developed several non-nuclear density gauges which are more user friendly, however, their accuracy has sometimes not equaled NDGs. This comparative study evaluated the performance of the eGauge (a relatively new device) to NDGs. Over 100 soil density and moisture measurements were collected …

Little research examines how tobacco quitlines affect disparities in smoking cessation in the United States. Our study utilized data from the Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2018) (TUS-CPS) and state-level quitline data from the North American Quitline Consortium and National Quitline Data Warehouse. We ran multilevel logistic regression models assessing a state-run quitline’s budget, reach, number of counseling sessions offered per caller, and hours of operation on 90-day smoking cessation. Multiplicative interactions between all exposures and sex, race/ethnicity, income, and education were tested to understand potential effect modification. We found no evidence that …
Multiphase Buck Converter Implementing Gallium Nitride Semiconductors, Kadin P. Stephens
Multiphase Buck Converter Implementing Gallium Nitride Semiconductors, Kadin P. Stephens
Electrical Engineering
Efficiency and power loss contributions are two of the main concerns in power systems. This project exerts the use of wide bandgap semiconductors, namely Gallium Nitride (GaN), and their benefit within a Cisco Systems point-of-load converter. This project provides tools to assist researchers and practicing engineers in performing further characterization, and implementation, of GaN devices. Silicon-based Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect (MOSFETs) transistors have prevailed in power conversion applications for decades and are now considered an industry standard. Presently, the utilization of wide bandgap semiconductors is an emerging, competitive technology, as they offer many major advantages over the traditional silicon …

A major research objective within asteroid science is to identify the source bodies of the meteorites. So far, possible or probable parent bodies have only been identified for a few meteorite types. These meteorite types include the H-type ordinary chon-drites [1,2], HEDs [3,4], pallasites [3], and mesosider-ites [5]. Identifying the parent bodies of meteorites helps to determine the location within the solar nebula where the geochemical processes, recorded in meteorites, took place. This has significantly increased our understanding of the evolution of the solar nebula and the early so-lar system [6].
Among the many meteorite types whose parent bodies are …

Bach’S Fifth Cello Suite, Double Bass And Scordatura: Practical And Historical Solutions, Thomas Willhoit
Bach’S Fifth Cello Suite, Double Bass And Scordatura: Practical And Historical Solutions, Thomas Willhoit
Graduate Student Work
J.S. Bach’s Six Suites for Solo Cello have become part of the standard bass repertoire. Some of these suites contain chords that are physically impossible to play on a standard double bass tuned in fourths; thus, there are many performance editions and recordings that contain chord omissions and rearrangements. This essay explores some of the critical reception that double bassists’ readings of the Six Suites have received. This knowledge is then taken to support practical performance solutions: scordatura (particularly tuning in perfect 5ths) and articulations from the urtext. The included examples demonstrate the technical and stylistic problems incurred while performing …
Expanding Constituency Support Through Shared Local Roots In U.S. House Primaries, Charles Hunt
Expanding Constituency Support Through Shared Local Roots In U.S. House Primaries, Charles Hunt
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper addresses the enduring connection of localism and place-based roots shared between many elected leaders and their constituents, which previous work has either ignored or improperly specified. I argue that representatives of the U.S. House with these roots—meaning authentic, lived experience in their districts prior to their officeholding—sustain more supportive constituencies in primary election stage. Using an original 7-point index of local biographical characteristics of incumbents seeking renomination from 2002 to 2018, I find that deeply-rooted incumbents are less than half as likely to receive a primary challenge, and on average perform more than 5 percentage points better in …
How And Why Did It Go So Wrong?: Theranos As A Legal Ethics Case Study, G.S. Hans
How And Why Did It Go So Wrong?: Theranos As A Legal Ethics Case Study, G.S. Hans
Georgia State University Law Review
The Theranos saga encompasses many discrete areas of law. Reporting on Theranos, most notably John Carreyrou’s Bad Blood, highlights the questionable ethical decisions that many of the attorneys involved made. The lessons attorneys and law students can learn from Bad Blood are highly complex. The Theranos story touches on multiple areas of professional responsibility, including competence, diligence, candor, conflicts, and liability. Thus, Theranos serves as a helpful tool to explore the limits of ethical lawyering for Professional Responsibility students.
This Article discusses the author’s experience with using Bad Blood as an extended case study in a new course on Legal …
Distinguishing Plea Discounts And Trial Penalties, Ben Grunwald
Distinguishing Plea Discounts And Trial Penalties, Ben Grunwald
Georgia State University Law Review
We know that criminal defendants who plead guilty receive lower sentences than those convicted at trial, but there’s widespread disagreement about why. One camp of scholars believes this plea-trial differential represents a deeply troubling and coercive penalty; a second believes it’s merely a freedom-enhancing discount; and a third denies any meaningful distinction between the two at all. One reason for this disagreement is theoretical—it’s not at all clear what these concepts mean. Another is empirical—in the absence of precise conceptual definitions, we lack relevant data because scholars don’t know what to look for when searching for evidence of penalties and …
Reluctance Or Apathy? Examining Georgia’S Continued Adherence To A Strict Mutuality Issue Preclusion Doctrine, Boris W. Gautier
Reluctance Or Apathy? Examining Georgia’S Continued Adherence To A Strict Mutuality Issue Preclusion Doctrine, Boris W. Gautier
Georgia State University Law Review
The common law doctrine of issue preclusion, also known as collateral estoppel, prevents parties from relitigating an issue in subsequent lawsuits if a prior judgment already conclusively decided the issue. Issue preclusion traditionally required strict mutuality of parties; the first and second lawsuits had to involve the exact same litigants. Although the majority of jurisdictions now allow nonmutual issue preclusion, Georgia continues to enforce “identity of parties” as a necessary element of issue preclusion. Despite recently reaffirming this requirement, the Georgia Supreme Court has not thoroughly analyzed the merits of the rule.
This Note examines the evolution of issue preclusion …
The Norms Of Algorithmic Credit Scoring, Nikita Aggarwal
The Norms Of Algorithmic Credit Scoring, Nikita Aggarwal
Articles
This article examines the growth of algorithmic credit scoring and its implications for the regulation of consumer credit markets in the UK. It constructs a frame of analysis for the regulation of algorithmic credit scoring, bound by the core norms underpinning UK consumer credit and data protection regulation: allocative efficiency, distributional fairness and consumer privacy (as autonomy). Examining the normative trade-offs that arise within this frame, the article argues that existing data protection and consumer credit frameworks do not achieve an appropriate normative balance in the regulation of algorithmic credit scoring. In particular, the growing reliance on consumers' personal data …

Exploring The Effects Of For-Profit And Nonprofit Size Congruency: An Exchange Perspective On Cause-Related Marketing, Anne Hamby, Niusha Jones, Guohong Yu
Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations
Prior research on cause-related marketing (CM) shows that congruencies between for-profit and nonprofit organizational missions and target markets affect consumers' perceptions of the partnership fit, and their subsequent response to CM promotions. The current work explores how congruencies between for-profit and nonprofit sizes influence consumers' perceptions of the partnership fit, and subsequently, their attitudes toward CM efforts. Study 1 shows that consumers perceive a low degree of organizational partnership fit between a small for-profit and large nonprofit (relative to other partnership configurations). Study 2 shows the nature of donated resources can affect organizational partnership fit perceptions, such that donations of …

Word-Problem-Solving Interventions For Elementary Students With Learning Disabilities: A Selective Meta-Analysis Of The Literature, Jennifer E. Kong, Christy Yan, Allison Serceki, H. Lee Swanson
Education Faculty Articles and Research
This meta-analysis assessed the effect of word-problem-solving interventions on the word-problem-solving accuracy of students identified as having a learning disability (LD) or at risk for an LD in kindergarten to the sixth grade. Eighteen randomized control group designed studies met the inclusion criteria. Overall, word-problem-solving interventions yielded a significant positive effect on the word-problem-solving accuracy of students in elementary grades with LD (effect size [ES] = 1.08). Instructional components that underlie effective studies were also identified. Results suggest that peer interaction and transfer instructions yielded large effects on treatment outcomes. Results also suggested that intensive interventions (50-min sessions, 34 total …
Reframing Church Property Disputes In Washington State, Theodore G. Lee
Reframing Church Property Disputes In Washington State, Theodore G. Lee
Washington Law Review
Real property disputes between units or members of the same church are common in the United States. To resolve such disputes, the Supreme Court has endorsed two doctrines: the hierarchical deference approach and the neutral-principles of law approach. The Court has justified both doctrines on the First Amendment’s Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses, but this justification is problematic. Specifically, under the hierarchical deference approach courts must always give preferential treatment to one religious group over others—effectively endorsing a particular religion. On the other hand, courts can enforce their own interpretations of religious issues under the neutral-principles approach, thereby infringing free …
Activity And Self-Shielding Coefficient Calculations Of Europium Oxide (Eu2o3) In A Hypothetical Nuclear Reactor, Nawras Ali Salman
Activity And Self-Shielding Coefficient Calculations Of Europium Oxide (Eu2o3) In A Hypothetical Nuclear Reactor, Nawras Ali Salman
Al-Nisour Journal for Medical Sciences
The elements are generally characterized by various cross-sections for interaction with particles and the effect of this reaction shows the number of elements with large cross-sections for interaction with neutrons in particular, so this effect must be studied on the materials that make up the core of the nuclear reactor, especially the elements with large cross-sections. Theoretical studies The characteristics of Europium oxide (Eu2O3) have been widely researched. Europium-153 makes up 52 percent of natural europium, with europium-151 accounting for the other 48 percent. Because of its ability to absorb neutrons, europium is primarily used in nuclear reactor control rods. …

Adapting A Classroom Simulation Experience To An Online Escape Room In Nutrition Education, Jenifer M. Ross, Lauri Wright, Andrea Y. Arikawa
Nutrition and Dietetics Faculty Research and Scholarship
Due to the COVID-19 emergency transition to remote learning, an undergraduate class in nutrition and dietetics modified a face-to-face experiential “escape room” assignment into a comparable online experience. The online assignment was structured so that students had to use knowledge and clues to move through each step of the Nutrition Care Process; students proceeded through the escape room individually until each successfully “escaped.” An important component of this assignment was the postactivity debriefing process, which took place via video conferencing in small groups. Students indicated that they were pleasantly surprised at the effectiveness of the online assignment. However, analytics showed …
