Temperature Effects On Gated Silicon Field Emission Array Performance, Ranajoy Bhattacharya, Nedeljko Karaulac, Winston Chern, Akintunde Ibitayo Akinwande, Jim Browning

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Silicon field emitter arrays (Si FEAs) are being explored as an electron source for vacuum channel transistors for high temperature electronics. Arrays of 1000 × 1000 silicon tip based gated field emitters were studied by measuring their electrical characteristics up to 40 V of DC gate bias with a 1.3 mA emission current at different temperatures from 25 to 400 °C. At ∼350 °C, residual gas analyzer measurements show that water desorption and carbon dioxide partial pressures increase significantly, the gate to emitter leakage current decreases by more than ten times, and the collector current increases by more than ten …

Pomegranate: Procedural 3d Tree Creation Via User-Defined L-Systems, Jeremy Berchtold Mar 2021

Pomegranate: Procedural 3d Tree Creation Via User-Defined L-Systems, Jeremy Berchtold

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Pomegranate creates procedural 3D trees based on a user-specified template. The template supports randomness and allows users to generate an entire forest of unique trees from a single template. The output trees are a single closed mesh without intersecting geometry (with the exception of leaves). Additionally, the output contains a skeletal rig used for animating the trees. Pomegranate produces textured trees that can use either a realistic or stylized look, as well as supporting different mesh densities for games or film. Since this project uses a procedural workflow, artists can quickly create and make edits to their trees. This increase …

A Visualization Tool For Minecraft Actor Properties And Permutations, Jillian N. Polsin Mar 2021

A Visualization Tool For Minecraft Actor Properties And Permutations, Jillian N. Polsin

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Minecraft is a game that is built around its content creators. Content creators build new worlds and mobs that allow players to experience Minecraft in a way they were never able to before. However, it is currently difficult for creators to find and fix bugs in their mobs as no real visualization or debugging tools exist in the game. This paper implements a new visualization tool that will make it easier for creators to make mobs and fix undesired behavior.

Corporate Complicity In International Criminal Law: Potential Responsibility Of European Arms Dealers For Crimes Committed In Yemen, Marina Aksenova Mar 2021

Corporate Complicity In International Criminal Law: Potential Responsibility Of European Arms Dealers For Crimes Committed In Yemen, Marina Aksenova

Washington International Law Journal

This article examines the question of corporate complicity within the framework of international criminal law and, more specifically, at the International Criminal Court (ICC). It does so by referencing a communication to the ICC filed by several non-governmental organizations, inviting the prosecutor to examine potential criminal responsibility of several European corporate officials who are knowingly supplying weapons to the United Arab Emirates/Saudi-led coalition currently engaged in a military offensive in Yemen. This submission raises an important legal question of whether the ICC’s Rome Statute provides for the possibility to hold corporate officials accountable in cases of complicity in gross human …

Assessing Rural And Urban Community Assets And Needs To Inform Extension Program Planning, Lendel Narine, Amanda D. Ali, Paul A. Hill

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

A needs assessment is a useful tool for prioritizing community needs and allocating resources. Prioritizing community needs helps ensure Extension programs are relevant and targeted towards specific audiences. This study prioritized normative needs of urban and rural Utah residents using a needs assessment framework. Convenience data were gathered from 1,043 adult Utah residents, and the raking method was used to weigh the sample by selected population characteristics. Descriptive statistics (frequencies and nonparametric statistics) were used for data analysis. A calculated Point-Score represented the difference between residents’ perceived importance and satisfaction of various community assets. Results showed affordable housing, affordable medical …

First Things First: Assessing Needs, Comfort, And Role Clarity For Physical Activity Promotion, Laura E. Balis, Thomas E. Strayer Iii, Samantha M. Harden

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Extension has recently begun delivering physical activity programs, but delivering evidence-based interventions is a challenge. To increase adoption of evidence-based interventions, a better understanding of agents’ perceptions and needs is necessary. The purpose of this research was to conduct a readiness assessment to identify organizational factors and agent perceptions that speed or impede uptake of evidence-based physical activity programs. Data were gathered from agents through a sequential mixed-methods design informed by the RE-AIM (reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, maintenance) framework. A survey assessed current work status, demographic variables, physical activity levels, and time spent on programming tasks. Semi-structured focus group questions …

Platform Liability Under Article 17 Of The Copyright In The Digital Single Market Directive, Automated Filtering And Fundamental Rights: An Impossible Match, Christophe Geiger, Bernd Justin Jütte

Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series

The Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market (CDSM Directive) introduced a change of paradigm with regard to the liability of some platforms in the European Union. Under the safe harbour rules of the Directive on electronic commerce (E-Commerce Directive), intermediaries in the EU were shielded from liability for acts of their users committed through their services, provided they had no knowledge of it. Although platform operators could be required to help enforce copyright infringements online by taking down infringing content, the E-commerce Directive also drew a very clear line that intermediaries could not be obliged to monitor all …

Faculty of Health Sciences, East Africa

To end the international crisis of preventable deaths in low-income and middle-income countries, evidence-informed and cost-efficient health care is urgently needed, and contextualised clinical practice guidelines are pivotal. However, as exposed by indirect consequences of poorly adapted COVID-19 guidelines, fundamental gaps continue to be reported between international recommendations and realistic best practice. To address this long-standing injustice of leaving health providers without useful guidance, we draw on examples from maternal health and the COVID-19 pandemic. We propose a framework for how global guideline developers can more effectively stratify recommendations for low-resource settings and account for predictable contextual barriers of implementation …

Hacks, Leaks, And Data Dumps: The Right To Publish Illegally Acquired Information Twenty Years After Bartnicki V. Vopper, Erik Ugland, Christina Mazzeo

Washington Law Review

This Article addresses a fluid and increasingly salient category of cases involving the First Amendment right to publish information that was hacked, stolen, or illegally leaked by someone else. Twenty years ago, in Bartnicki v. Vopper, the Supreme Court appeared to give broad constitutional cover to journalists and other publishers in these situations, but Justice Stevens’s inexact opinion for the Court and Justice Breyer’s muddling concurrence left the boundaries unclear. The Bartnicki framework is now implicated in dozens of new cases— from the extradition and prosecution of Julian Assange, to Donald Trump’s threatened suit of The New York Times …

Leaf-level gas exchange data support the mechanistic understanding of plant fluxes of carbon and water. These fluxes inform our understanding of ecosystem function, are an important constraint on parameterization of terrestrial biosphere models, are necessary to understand the response of plants to global environmental change, and are integral to efforts to improve crop production. Collection of these data using gas analyzers can be both technically challenging and time consuming, and individual studies generally focus on a small range of species, restricted time periods, or limited geographic regions. The high value of these data is exemplified by the many publications that …

Faculty Research 2021

OBJECTIVE: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) poses societal challenges that require expeditious data and knowledge sharing. Though organizational clinical data are abundant, these are largely inaccessible to outside researchers. Statistical, machine learning, and causal analyses are most successful with large-scale data beyond what is available in any given organization. Here, we introduce the National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C), an open science community focused on analyzing patient-level data from many centers.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Clinical and Translational Science Award Program and scientific community created N3C to overcome technical, regulatory, policy, and governance barriers to sharing and harmonizing individual-level clinical data. We …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

In order to achieve the global elimination of cervical cancer as a public health problem, close surveillance of progress in public health and clinical activities and outcomes across the three pillars of vaccination, screening and treatment will be required. Surveillance should ideally occur within an integrated system that is planned, funded, and regularly evaluated to ensure it is providing timely, accurate and relevant feedback for action. In this paper, we conceptualise the main public health surveillance objectives as process and outcome measures in each of the three pillars. Process measures include coverage/participation measures for vaccination, screening and treatment alongside the …

Regulations In Alcohol Advertising: Scrutiny Applied To Commercial Speech, John M. Middleton Mar 2021

Regulations In Alcohol Advertising: Scrutiny Applied To Commercial Speech, John M. Middleton

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

There is a circuit split between the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth and Ninth circuits concerning the level of scrutiny to apply to the regulation of alcohol advertising. The regulatory framework for the alcohol industry has a long and evolving history. Since our country’s founding, alcohol has had a strong presence in Ameri-can life, and it continues to enjoy a flourishing market. Knowing the alcohol industry’s history is important to understanding the current circuit split. The Twenty-First Amendment repealed Prohibition and gave states the power to regulate alcohol according to their own standards. The protections granted by the …

Supplemental Environmental Projects: Dojs March 2020 Policy Showed The Downfalls Of A Ban, Madeline Mckernan Mar 2021

Supplemental Environmental Projects: Dojs March 2020 Policy Showed The Downfalls Of A Ban, Madeline Mckernan

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

In March of 2020, the Department of Justice (“DOJ”) adopted a policy that bars the use of supplemental environmental projects (“SEPs”) in settlements of environmental enforcement suits. A ban on SEPs can drastically impact both companies and the environment. The DOJ repeatedly rolled back the use of SEPs during the Trump Administration, but President Biden reversed the ban placed on SEPs in March 2020 under the previous administration. SEPs have long been used in environmental enforcement suits and have been extremely useful in the settlement process by giving companies more options when entering into settlement agreements, making settlements easier for …

Evidence-Based Use Of Cognitive Testing For Academic Interventions: A Critical Appraisal Of Meta-Analytic Methodologies, Scott L. Decker, Jessica C. Luedke Mar 2021

Evidence-Based Use Of Cognitive Testing For Academic Interventions: A Critical Appraisal Of Meta-Analytic Methodologies, Scott L. Decker, Jessica C. Luedke

Faculty Publications

Research suggests Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) are directly linked to specific neurocognitive deficits that result in unexpected learning delays in academic domains for children in schools. However, meta-analytic studies have failed to find supporting evidence for using neurocognitive tests and, consequently, have discouraged their inclusion in SLD identification policies. The current study critically reviews meta-analytic findings and the methodological validity of over 200 research studies used in previous meta-analytic studies to estimate the causal effect of neurocognitive tests on intervention outcomes. Results suggest that only a very small percentage (6–12%) of studies used in previous meta-analytic studies were methodologically valid …
