Action Detection Using A Neural Network Elucidates The Genetics Of Mouse Grooming Behavior., Brian Q Geuther, Asaf Peer, Hao He, Gautam Sabnis, Vivek M. Philip, Vivek Kumar
Faculty Research 2021
Automated detection of complex animal behaviors remains a challenging problem in neuroscience, particularly for behaviors that consist of disparate sequential motions. Grooming is a prototypical stereotyped behavior that is often used as an endophenotype in psychiatric genetics. Here, we used mouse grooming behavior as an example and developed a general purpose neural network architecture capable of dynamic action detection at human observer-level performance and operating across dozens of mouse strains with high visual diversity. We provide insights into the amount of human annotated training data that are needed to achieve such performance. We surveyed grooming behavior in the open field …

Better Parenting Through Western Civ, David Head
Better Parenting Through Western Civ, David Head
UCF Forum
I enjoy teaching the history course Western Civilization because it has great tips for parenting. I have three children—ages 6, 4 and 21 months—and my wife and I face a problem common to the rulers of the ancient world’s great empires: how to maintain order among an unruly population when you are outnumbered.

Public Land & Resources Law Review
The Supreme Court of the United States ("Supreme Court") will hear oral arguments in this matter on Tuesday, March 23, 2021. This case presents the narrow issue of whether a tribal police officer has the authority to investigate and detain a non-Indian on a public right-of-way within a reservation for a suspected violation of state or federal law. The lower courts, holding that tribes have no such authority, granted James Cooley’s motion to suppress evidence. The Supreme Court must decide whether the lower courts erred in so deciding. While the issue before the Supreme Court is itself narrow, it has …

Combining Multicolor Fish With Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging For Chromosomal Identification And Chromosomal Sub Structure Investigation, Archana Bhartiya, Ian Robinson, Mohammed Yousuf, Stanley W. Botchway
Centre for Regenerative Medicine & Stem Cell Research
Understanding the structure of chromatin in chromosomes during normal and diseased state of cells is still one of the key challenges in structural biology. Using DAPI staining alone together with Fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM), the environment of chromatin in chromosomes can be explored. Fluorescence lifetime can be used to probe the environment of a fluorophore such as energy transfer, pH and viscosity. Multicolor FISH (M-FISH) is a technique that allows individual chromosome identification, classification as well as assessment of the entire genome. Here we describe a combined approach using DAPI as a DNA environment sensor together with FLIM and M-FISH …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Peer-Implemented Video Feedback On Improving Weightlifting Form, Emma Kathleen Cochrane
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study evaluated the effectiveness of behavioral skills training (BST) in teaching peer-trainers to implement video feedback (Study 1). This study also evaluated the effectiveness of peer-implemented video feedback to improve the form of the deadlift movement (Study 2). Peer-implemented video feedback was used to improve the performance of the deadlift across participants. A non-concurrent, multiple baseline across participants design was employed for all participants in Study 1 and Study 2. The results show that BST was effective at teaching peer-trainers to implement video feedback. Peer-implemented video feedback was effective at improvement the form of the deadlift across all participants. Keywords: …
Assessing The Validity Of The Automatic Reinforcement Screening Assessment, Taylin Rhey Byerly
Assessing The Validity Of The Automatic Reinforcement Screening Assessment, Taylin Rhey Byerly
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Stereotypy is commonly observed in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). (Bodfish et al., 2000; Koegel & Covert, 1972) and vocal stereotypy has been found to impede skill acquisition and be socially stigmatizing (Gibbs et al., 2018; Liu-Gitz, & Banda, 2010;). Although vocal stereotypy is often maintained by automatic reinforcement (Ahearn et al., 2007), until recent years it was common practice to conduct a functional analysis consisting of multiple test conditions and at least one control condition (e.g., Iwata et al., 1982/1994) to identify its function. However, research suggests that a screening assessment (Querim et al., 2013) may be an …
Using A Peer-Mediated Bullying Safety Skills Intervention For Children With Disabilities, Jennifer Leigh Trapani
Using A Peer-Mediated Bullying Safety Skills Intervention For Children With Disabilities, Jennifer Leigh Trapani
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As bullying continues to be a growing problem in schools, research is needed to further evaluate the effectiveness of current bullying prevention and intervention programs for children with disabilities. The peer-mediated intervention (PMI) is an evidence-based practice that has been successful in teaching social skills to children with disabilities. PMI literature can be extended by exploring and evaluating its effectiveness in teaching bullying safety skills to children with disabilities. The current study examined the use of PMI to teach children with disabilities bullying safety skills with four students (2 peers and 2 learners) in grades kindergarten and third grade. Typically …

Stabilization Of Cultural Innovations Depends On Population Density: Testing An Epidemiological Model Of Cultural Evolution Against A Global Dataset Of Rock Art Sites And Climate-Based Estimates Of Ancient Population Densities, Richard Walker, Anders Eriksson, Camille Ruiz, Taylor Howard Newton, Francesco Casalegno
Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications
Demographic models of human cultural evolution have high explanatory potential but weak empirical support. Here we use a global dataset of rock art sites and climate and genetics-based estimates of ancient population densities to test a new model based on epidemiological principles. The model focuses on the process whereby a cultural innovation becomes endemic in a population; predicting that this cannot occur unless population density exceeds a critical threshold. Analysis of the data; using a Bayesian statistical framework; shows that the model has stronger empirical support than a proportional model; where detection is directly proportional to population density; or a …

Globalization, Trade Imbalances, And Labor Market Adjustment, Rafael Dix-Carneiro, João Paulo Pessoa, Ricardo Reyes-Heroles, Sharon Traiberman
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
We study the role of global trade imbalances in shaping the adjustment dynamics in response to trade shocks. We build and estimate a general equilibrium, multicountry, multisector model of trade with two key ingredients: 1) consumption-saving decisions in each country commanded by representative households, leading to endogenous trade imbalances, and 2) labor market frictions across and within sectors, leading to unemployment dynamics and sluggish transitions to shocks. We use the estimated model to study the behavior of labor markets in response to globalization shocks, including shocks to technology, trade costs, and intertemporal preferences (savings gluts). We find that modeling trade …

Review Of The Use Of Differential Reinforcement In Skill Acquisition, Hannah E. Efaw
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this paper was to review and synthesize the literature investigating the impact of differential reinforcement on skill acquisition. Specifically, the aim of this review was to determine the most efficient differential reinforcement arrangement for skill acquisition in individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Researchers synthesized the results of 12 articles with the following categories: (a) participant characteristics (i.e.,, age, sex, diagnosis, verbal repertoire, communication modality, receptive and imitation skills, prompt dependency), (b) target behavior information (i.e., target behavior, measurement system), (c) pre-evaluation assessments (i.e., preference assessments, reinforcer assessments, magnitude edible and size assessments), (d) teaching procedures (i.e., …

Family-Based Caregiving: Does Lumping Asian Americans Together Do More Harm Than Good?, Suryadewi E. Nugraheni, Julia F. Hastings
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Asian American family caregivers have gained increased attention due to the need to provide life-sustaining aid at home given the rising numbers of older adults. This article reflects upon caregiving-related research studies that have overlooked the circumstances Asian American caregivers bring to the home-care context. Policies written to address community needs tend to omit the social circumstances many Asian American caregivers must face when trying to take advantage of programs and services. For example, the eligibility requirements fail to recognize distinctive cultural values embedded within the caregiving processes. Further, most Asian American data is aggregated. Aggregating data by ethnicity limits …

The Communicative Effects Of Anonymity Online: A Natural Language Analysis Of The Faceless, Caleb Johnson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
An ever-increasing number of Americans have an active social media
presence online. As of March 2020, an estimated 79% of Americans were active
monthly users of some sort. Many of these online platforms allow users to
operate anonymously which could potentially lead to shifts in communicative
behavior. I first discuss my compilation process of the Twitter Anonymity
Dataset (TAD), a human-classified dataset of 100,000 Twitter accounts that are
categorized by their level of identifiability to their real-world agent. Next, I
investigate some of the structural differences between the classification levels
and employ a variety of Natural Language Processing models and …

The Anchor: 2021
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
Computational Design, Simulation Of Meshing, And Stress Analysis Of Strain Wave Gear Drives, Eloy Yague-Spaude
Computational Design, Simulation Of Meshing, And Stress Analysis Of Strain Wave Gear Drives, Eloy Yague-Spaude
Theses
Strain wave gear (SWG) drives were patented in 1959 by C. Walton Musser as a coaxial, compact, and lightweight gear drive providing remarkably large gear ratios without backlash. This outstanding performance requires the use of a flexible gear, as well as a meshing process with two regions of tooth contact as opposed to traditional gear drives, which only mesh in a single region. The latter drives have been studied for centuries under the principles of solid mechanics whereas SWG drives lack strong bodies of literature, principles, and computational tools for their design.
SWG drives include three parts: wave generator, flexible …

Face Mask Use To Protect Against Covid-19; Importance Of Substrate, Fit, And User Tendencies, Evelyn Kassel
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In 2019, a novel respiratory illness appeared in China and spread rapidly though the country. It was determined that the SARS–CoV-2 virus was the cause of the COVID-19 pandemic. By the end of 2020, almost every continent was experiencing the effects of COVID-19. The virus caused health officials difficulty in determining its route of transmission. They worked tirelessly to discover it was spread via respiratory droplets. Panicked buyers wiped out protective equipment like medical masks and respirators, regardless of what was needed. Essential employees and first responders were subject to large scale personal protective equipment (PPE) shortages as health organizations …
