The Impact Of Facial Expressions On Established Personal Space, Hannah L. Stewart

Student Theses and Dissertations

Differences in personal space preference have been established when encountering individuals with happy, neutral, and angry faces. The present research examines a broader range of expression, by introducing four additional facial expressions, to identify whether previous findings and conclusions persist. In the study, 21 participants were asked to approach fourteen faces consisting of male and female versions of seven different expressions—happy, surprise, neutral, sad, afraid, disgust, and anger—and to stop at the point that they would be comfortable having a conversation with the person. Participants were more likely to be comfortable being closer to faces showing positively associated emotions than …

Therapy Approaches For Broca’S Aphasia: Consultative Vs. Clinician Directed, Stacey Nichole Mott

Student Theses and Dissertations

This investigation sought to explore the outcomes from two common therapy approaches, consultative and clinician directed, to language and communication rehabilitation for individuals with Broca’s aphasia. Both approaches are recognized as evidence-based and are used across many clinical settings. This single case study was performed using standardized assessment, informal measures, and a survey. The data collection reveals that there are positive outcomes to both methods of therapy. However, this study revealed a need to continue investigating the prevalence of use for both types of therapy approaches used by speech-language pathologists in various rehabilitative settings.

Age-Related Differences In Functional Tool-Use Are Due To Changes In Movement Quality And Not Simply Motor Slowing, Andrew Hooyman, Peiyuan Wang, Sydney Y. Schaefer

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Age-related declines in fine motor control may impact tool-use and thereby limit functional independence. Most previous research has, however, focused on the effect of aging on gross motor tasks. Few studies have investigated the effects of aging on the strategy or quality of fine motor skills, especially in tool-use, which may better reflect how age impacts complex movement capability. Twenty-two young (ages 19–35) and 18 older adults (ages 58–87) performed a timed upper extremity task using a tool to acquire and transport objects to different locations. Overall task performance was divided into two phases based on 3-D position of the …

Limitations to this study were primarily stemmed from …

Induction And Characterization Of Microspore Embryogenesis In Soybean (Glycine Max [L.] Merrill), Bretton M. Hale Mar 2021

Induction And Characterization Of Microspore Embryogenesis In Soybean (Glycine Max [L.] Merrill), Bretton M. Hale

Student Theses and Dissertations

Gametophytic embryogenesis is a method used to achieve homozygosity in plant breeding programs. However, its application is limited within the Fabaceae, which has historically demonstrated morphogenic recalcitrance in comparison to other plant families (i.e., Brassicaceae and Poaceae). Here, the immature male gametophyte — or microspore — was used to investigate gametophytic embryogenesis in soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merrill). In so doing, an induction regimen was optimized to support embryogenic growth through pretreatment temperature shock, a nitrogen starvation medium, and other post-isolation culture conditions. In addition, parallels were drawn between soybean microspore cytology and that which has been reported in model …

Transversus Abdominus Plane Block For Enhanced Recovery After Surgery, Monicka Roden, Nancy Ann Westbrook, Lisa Herbinger Mar 2021

Transversus Abdominus Plane Block For Enhanced Recovery After Surgery, Monicka Roden, Nancy Ann Westbrook, Lisa Herbinger

Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing

Transversus abdominis plane (TAP) blocks are utilized as an opioid-sparing anesthetic regimen and are incorporated into Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programs to promote higher quality care for all surgical patients. Transversus abdominis plane blocks decrease pain scores, nausea and vomiting, respiratory depression, the time until ambulation and return of bowel mobility, and length of hospital stay. Transversus abdominis plane blocks have been shown to be superior to the current “gold standard,” thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA), for multimodal analgesia in an ERAS pathway. An ultrasound guided TAP block was performed after induction in a case involving a 41-year-old female with …

Methods To Achieve One-Lung Ventilation, Laura Starr Wagner Mar 2021

Methods To Achieve One-Lung Ventilation, Laura Starr Wagner

Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing

Enabling surgical access in the thorax is the most common indication for lung isolation and one-lung ventilation (OLV). Achieving lung isolation for thoracic surgery remains an arduous task in anesthesia. Methods to achieve lung isolation are the placement of a double-lumen endobronchial tube (DLT), bronchial blocker (BB) with a single-lumen endotracheal tube (SLT), and intentional insertion of a SLT into the main bronchus. Confirmation with fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) is crucial to verify placement of these devices due to high malposition rates.

Sugammadex In Patients With Myasthenia Gravis, Presley Harrison Mar 2021

Sugammadex In Patients With Myasthenia Gravis, Presley Harrison

Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder caused by a decrease in functional acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction resulting from their destruction or inactivation by antibodies. Patients with MG can experience marked sensitivity to nondepolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs), and require specialized anesthetic care because of their increased risk of postoperative weakness and respiratory failure. Since pyridostigmine, a cholinesterase inhibitor, is a mainstay of MG treatment, the conventional neostigmine antagonism is unfavorable. Sugammadex is a direct, selective antagonist of aminosteroid NMBAs. It is a cyclodextrin derivative that irreversibly encapsulates rocuronium or vecuronium to terminate its action at the nicotinic …

Airway And Pulmonary Optimization In The Early Postoperative Period, Jared Hargett, David Fort Mar 2021

Airway And Pulmonary Optimization In The Early Postoperative Period, Jared Hargett, David Fort

Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing

Hypoxia in the early postoperative period can be the result of a various number of causes. Anesthesia providers must be able to quickly identify possible causes of hypoxia and apply appropriate pulmonary interventions. Potential causes of hypoxia can result from residual neuromuscular blockade from paralytic agents, respiratory depression from narcotic administration, laryngospasm, or an airway obstruction. Upper airway anatomy consists of cartilage and bone structures of the nose and mouth, followed by the soft tissue of the oropharynx and hypopharynx, and ending at the glottic opening of the vocal cords. The soft tissue of the oropharynx is prone to collapse …

Molecular Design Of Three-Dimensional Metal-Free A(Nh4)X3 Perovskites For Photovoltaic Applications, Jie Bie, Dai-Bei Yang, Ming-Gang Ju, Qiang Pan, Yu-Meng You, Wei Fa, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Shuang Chen

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

The intense research activities on the hybrid organic−inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have led to the greatly improved light absorbers for solar cells with high power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, it is still challenging to find an alternative lead-free perovskite to replace the organohalide lead perovskites to achieve high PCE. This is because both previous experimental and theoretical investigations have shown that the Pb2+ cations play a dominating role in contributing the desirable frontier electronic bands of the HOIPs for light absorbing. Recent advances in the chemical synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) metal-free perovskites, by replacing Pb2+ with NH4+ …
