Speech Peculiarities Of Young Uzbek Mothers, Nodira Umarova Mar 2021

Speech Peculiarities Of Young Uzbek Mothers, Nodira Umarova

Philology Matters

Phenomena of motherhood is an independent existential value, as far as it satisfies social needs, that is an aspiration of individuals for selfactualization, descendant realization, the desire to leave a fully lived life. A notion of language personality is of concern which is different from the functional viewpoints of speech and communicative personalities. Motherhood changes both a female personality structure touching upon her motivational component, world-view, and her social status in the community, therefore, self-appraisal, her own image defines a woman’s language personality in the social role of a mother. Important features of a child's normal mental development are his/her …

The Importance Of Developing Teachers' Assessment Literacy Competence, Kamola Muradkasimova

Philology Matters

The following article is based on the action research done among English as foreign language (EFL) educators to identify the language assessment literacy level; hence, educational assessment has always been an integral element of teaching. The principle aim in undertaking the following research was to investigate the language assessment level of EFL teachers at Higher Educational Institutions (HEI) and mitigate the barriers to success in gaining procedural/ conceptual level of assessment literacy. There are many studies on language assessment literacy, taking the definition of assessment literacy as the root and focusing on the competence of language teachers, there exist several …

Principles Of Improving Sociolinguistic Competence Among Students Of Philological Universities, Sevara Ziyaeva Mar 2021

Principles Of Improving Sociolinguistic Competence Among Students Of Philological Universities, Sevara Ziyaeva

Philology Matters

Developing sociolinguistic competence of philology students focuses on training and actualization of a certain set of components of sociolinguistic competence - the sociolinguistic paradigm that imposes a specific form on the individual speech behavior depending on the given social environment and the prevailing social and communicative context. The training system for the improvement of sociolinguistic competence of students should be based on didactic and methodological principles, enriched with special sociolinguistic content, which is the basis for the improvement of knowledge, skills, and abilities of students to build their speech behavior based on the speech profile of the interlocutor, taking into …

Orthogonal Projection Loss, Kanchana Ranasinghe, Muzammal Naseer, Munawar Hayat, Salman Khan, Fahad Shahbaz Khan Mar 2021

Orthogonal Projection Loss, Kanchana Ranasinghe, Muzammal Naseer, Munawar Hayat, Salman Khan, Fahad Shahbaz Khan

Computer Vision Faculty Publications

Deep neural networks have achieved remarkable performance on a range of classification tasks, with softmax cross-entropy (CE) loss emerging as the de-facto objective function. The CE loss encourages features of a class to have a higher projection score on the true class-vector compared to the negative classes. However, this is a relative constraint and does not explicitly force different class features to be well-separated. Motivated by the observation that ground-truth class representations in CE loss are orthogonal (one-hot encoded vectors), we develop a novel loss function termed 'Orthogonal Projection Loss' (OPL) which imposes orthogonality in the feature space. OPL augments …

Noncontingent Reinforcement In The Treatment Of Attention Maintained Problem Behavior: Schedule Thinning Within Extended Sessions, Kelly O'Donnell Mar 2021

Noncontingent Reinforcement In The Treatment Of Attention Maintained Problem Behavior: Schedule Thinning Within Extended Sessions, Kelly O'Donnell

Thesis Projects

Children may develop maladaptive behaviors to obtain attention from adults. With respect to problem behavior, research has shown that noncontingent reinforcement (NCR) is an effective intervention that reduces problem behavior through disruption of the relation between the behavior and the consequence. This study evaluated the treatment effects of NCR without extinction across extended, 2 hour, sessions for participants whose problem behavior is maintained by social-positive reinforcement, specifically attention. In addition, this study also emphasized the importance of extended sessions due to the reality of the caregiver/child interaction being longer than the typical 5- to 15-min sessions. The results of this …

Association Between Clinical Respiratory Signs, Lung Lesions Detected By Thoracic Ultrasonography And Growth Performance In Pre‐Weaned Dairy Calves, Inmaculada Cuevas-Gomez, Mark Mcgee, Jose Maria Sanchez, Edward O'Riordan, Nicky Byrne, Tara Mcdaneld, Bernadette Earley Mar 2021

Association Between Clinical Respiratory Signs, Lung Lesions Detected By Thoracic Ultrasonography And Growth Performance In Pre‐Weaned Dairy Calves, Inmaculada Cuevas-Gomez, Mark Mcgee, Jose Maria Sanchez, Edward O'Riordan, Nicky Byrne, Tara Mcdaneld, Bernadette Earley

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Background: Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the main cause of mortality among 1-to-5 month old calves in Ireland, accounting for approximately one-third of deaths. Despite widespread use of clinical respiratory signs for diagnosing BRD, lung lesions are detected, using thoracic ultrasonography (TUS) or following post-mortem, in calves showing no clinical signs. This highlights the limitation of clinical respiratory signs as a method of detecting sub-clinical BRD. Using 53 purchased artificially-reared male dairy calves, the objectives of this study were to: (i) characterise the BRD incidence detected by clinical respiratory signs and/or TUS, (ii) investigate the association between clinical respiratory signs …

Aggregate Data Yields Biased Estimates Of Voter Preferences, Corey Lang, Shanna Pearson-Merkowitz Mar 2021

Aggregate Data Yields Biased Estimates Of Voter Preferences, Corey Lang, Shanna Pearson-Merkowitz

Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Working Papers

Voter preferences and valuation of public goods are often estimated using aggregated votes matched with Census data at the same spatial scale. However, this method may yield biased estimates for two reasons we examine in this paper: using Census data ignores the selection process of who votes, and relying on comparisons between aggregated units makes models susceptible to omitted variable bias. To assess bias, we use both Monte Carlo simulation and a case study regarding a statewide environmental bond referendum for which we have collected aggregate data and individual exit poll data. Our results confirm the two sources of bias …

Rúḥíyyih Yuille, Wilmer Amina Carter Foundation

Bridges Digital Archive: Audio and Video Recordings

Ari Barrientos and Denise Spencer interview Rúḥíyyih Yuille, a woman with a history in racial and social activism. Born in 1976 in Arcadia, California, Yuille’s earliest memories involved singing and performing with other children. Her memories of living in Monrovia, California involved growing up among a diverse community and how teenagers had some places in and out of the city to hang out. The topic then turns to Yuille’s time at the University of Redlands. Having been there for both her undergraduate and graduate years, from 1944 to 2000, the interviewee talks about the area. While Monrovia had some diverse …

Effectiveness Of An Educational Intervention On Lgbtq Clinical Competence Among Undergraduate Nursing Students, Taylor Hall Mar 2021

Effectiveness Of An Educational Intervention On Lgbtq Clinical Competence Among Undergraduate Nursing Students, Taylor Hall

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects

Persons who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGTBQ) are at increased risk for poor health outcomes. LGBTQ patients have higher incidences of poor health outcomes due to fear of mistreatment, bias, and stigmas. More education and training for healthcare professionals are needed regarding LGBTQ patients' care to change this patient population's current trend. The project implemented an educational intervention consisting of a learning module and panel discussion. The sample included 63 undergraduate nursing students at a rural central Georgia university. The project was a quantitative research design with pretest and posttest quantitative data. Written reflections from students …

Let’S Do Better: Public Representations Of Covid-19 Science, Timothy Caulfield, Tania M. Bubela, Jonathan Kimmelman, Vardit Ravitsky Mar 2021

Let’S Do Better: Public Representations Of Covid-19 Science, Timothy Caulfield, Tania M. Bubela, Jonathan Kimmelman, Vardit Ravitsky

Office of the Provost

COVID science is being both done and circulated at a furious pace. While it is inspiring to see the research community responding so vigorously to the pandemic crisis, all this activity has also created a churning sea of bad data, conflicting results, and exaggerated headlines. With representations of science becoming increasingly polarized, twisted, and hyped, there is growing concern that the relevant science is being represented to the public in a manner that may cause confusion, inappropriate expectations, and the erosion of public trust. Here we explore some of the key issues associated with the representations of science in the …

Mass-Velocity Dispersion Relation In Hiflugcs Galaxy Clusters, Pengfei Li, Stacy S. Mcgaugh Mar 2021

Mass-Velocity Dispersion Relation In Hiflugcs Galaxy Clusters, Pengfei Li, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Faculty Scholarship

We investigate the mass-velocity dispersion relation (MVDR) in 29 galaxy clusters in the HIghest X-ray FLUx Galaxy Cluster Sample (HIFLUGCS). We measure the spatially resolved, line-of-sight velocity dispersion profiles of these clusters, which we find to be mostly flat at large radii, reminiscent of the rotation curves of galaxies. We discover a tight empirical relation between the baryonic mass M bar and the flat velocity dispersion σ of the member galaxies, i.e., MVDR,, with the lognormal intrinsic scatter of 12 -3 +3. The residuals of the MVDR are uncorrelated with other cluster properties like temperature, cluster radius, baryonic mass surface …

Under Whose Roof? Understanding The Living Arrangements Of Children In Doubled-Up Households, Hope Harvey, Rachel Dunifon, Natasha Pilkauskas Mar 2021

Under Whose Roof? Understanding The Living Arrangements Of Children In Doubled-Up Households, Hope Harvey, Rachel Dunifon, Natasha Pilkauskas

Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications

A growing literature in family demography examines children's residence in doubled-up (shared) households with extended family members and nonkin. This research has largely overlooked the role of doubling up as a housing strategy, with “hosts” (householders) providing housing support for “guests” living in their home. Yet, understanding children's experiences in doubled-up households requires attention to host/guest status. Using the American Community Survey and Survey of Income and Program Participation, we identify the prevalence of children doubling up as hosts and guests in different household compositions (multigenerational, extended family, nonkin), show how this varies by demographic characteristics, and examine children's patterns …

Faculty Research 2021

Despite the correlation of clinical outcome and molecular subtypes of high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC), contemporary gene expression signatures have not been implemented in clinical practice to stratify patients for targeted therapy. Hence, we aimed to examine the potential of unsupervised matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization imaging mass spectrometry (MALDI-IMS) to stratify patients who might benefit from targeted therapeutic strategies. Molecular subtyping of paraffin-embedded tissue samples from 279 HGSOC patients was performed by NanoString analysis (ground truth labeling). Next, we applied MALDI-IMS paired with machine-learning algorithms to identify distinct mass profiles on the same paraffin-embedded tissue sections and distinguish HGSOC subtypes by …

“I Don’T See It That Way Anymore”: A Qualitative Study Of Significant Changes Of Mind, Austin C. Archer Mar 2021

“I Don’T See It That Way Anymore”: A Qualitative Study Of Significant Changes Of Mind, Austin C. Archer

The Qualitative Report

The specific aim of the study is to explore the cognitive and emotional phenomena which accompany profound changes of perspective that people have. I would like to understand the change in a person’s thinking and in what way the person experiences these changes, whether it is a change in belief or a worldview. I would also like to understand whether external factors such as that facilitate these profound changes. Using a phenomenological approach, I interviewed eight adult participants in depth regarding changes to their worldview. I examined three phases of change, namely pre-change phase, the change phase, and the post-change …

Problem Solving And Clinical Decision-Making: Teaching Aba Trainees To Select Measurement Methods, Emily White Mar 2021

Problem Solving And Clinical Decision-Making: Teaching Aba Trainees To Select Measurement Methods, Emily White

Doctoral Dissertations - College of Arts and Sciences

Behavior Analysis training programs prepare ABA trainees to pass their certification examinations and, thereafter, to effectively deliver ABA services. Researchers are yet to evaluate the extent to which skills established during classroom activities generalize to conditions that more closely approximate practiceas- usual conditions. The purpose of this series of studies was to explore necessary and sufficient conditions for ABA trainees to select appropriate measurement methods in a variety of trained and untrained contexts. In Study 1, investigators taught behavior technicians to select among seven measurement methods in response to trial-unique written complete scenarios. In Study 2, investigators evaluated a package …

Parents Of Children With Disabilities In The Early Months Of Covid-19: Knowledge, Beliefs And Needs, Mary Beth Bruder Phd, Tara M. Lutz Phd, Kelly E. Ferreira Phd

Developmental Disabilities Network Journal

COVID-19 has impacted families across the world. Besides the huge task of keeping their children and themselves healthy, families had more responsibilities such as supporting their children’s learning at home when they could not go to school. We asked 457 parents of children with disabilities about their knowledge, beliefs, and needs during the first few months of the pandemic. The parents reported a decrease in formal supports available to them. They also reported a decrease in being able to access informal supports. The parents stated concerns about the health and well-being of their families, the loss of jobs and income, …
