Makara Journal of Science

This study describes the development of N-benzyl-1,10-phenantrolinium salt as an antiplasmodium agent. The salt, that is, 1-(4-ethoxy-3-methoxybenzyl)-1,10-phenanthrolin-1-ium bromide, was prepared using vanillin as the starting material in four simple synthetic steps. First, the alkylation of vanillin using diethyl sulfate produced 4-ethoxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde in 79% yield. Second, the reduction of the protected vanillin by NaBH4 through the grinding method allowed us to obtain 4-ethoxy-3-methoxybenzyl alcohol in 96% yield. Next, the bromination of the benzyl alcohol under solvent-free condition led to the formation of the corresponding benzyl bromide, which in turn underwent bimolecular nucleophilic substitution with 1,10-phenanthroline to produce the desired …

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

Linear regression is one of the most important statistical tools through which it is possible to know the relationship between the response variable and one variable (or more) of the independent variable(s), which is often used in various fields of science. Heteroscedastic is one of the linear regression problems, the effect of which leads to inaccurate conclusions. The problem of heteroscedastic may be accompanied by the presence of extreme outliers in the independent variables (High leverage points) (HLPs), the presence of (HLPs) in the data set result unrealistic estimates and misleading inferences. In this paper, we review some of the …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Gene expression data features high dimensionality, multicollinearity, and non-Gaussian distribution noise, posing hurdles for identification of true regulatory genes controlling a biological process or pathway. In this study, we integrated the Huber loss function and the Berhu penalty (HB) into partial least squares (PLS) framework to deal with the high dimension and multicollinearity property of gene expression data, and developed a new method called HB-PLS regression to model the relationships between regulatory genes and pathway genes. To solve the Huber-Berhu optimization problem, an accelerated proximal gradient descent algorithm with at least 10 times faster than the general convex optimization solver …

Remittance, Oil Trade Balance, And Income: Empirical Evidence From 55 Developing Countries, Wai Ching Poon, Thanh Le

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

This article investigates the effect of net oil trading position on remittance flows through income variation of 55 developing countries over 1986–2018. To disentangle the causal effect of aggregate income on remittances, we take advantage of the persistent response of income to world oil price shocks and instrument income by the lagged interaction term between the dynamics of oil prices and net oil trade volumes. Results reveal that countries with a more substantial net oil trade balance attract larger remittances after an increase in global oil prices. Remittance flows to developing countries are associated with an altruistic or compensatory motive …

Justice In Healthcare: Welfare And Equal Opportunity, Napoleon M. Mabaquiao Jr. Mar 2021

Justice In Healthcare: Welfare And Equal Opportunity, Napoleon M. Mabaquiao Jr.

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Public health crises, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic that the world is currently experiencing, highlight two undeniable truths, among others. One is the value of health and healthcare, which is necessary for our survival, well-being, and access to some of life’s opportunities. The other is the scarcity of most healthcare resources. As everybody’s healthcare needs will not be satisfied, misfortunes in the form of suffering, loss of opportunities, or death are bound to occur. In the face of such realities, the issue of justice in healthcare, which inquires into what makes healthcare resource allocations fair, becomes a serious moral …

A Rummage Into The Reformasi Dustbin Of History: A Sociocultural-Legal Study Of Indonesia’S Constitutional Commission, Bambang Suryowidodo

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

To a certain extent, the enigmatic process of Indonesian constitutional amendment has been adequately raised, if not explained. Nonetheless, it is a no-brainer to suggest that the available accounts are far from presenting the whole picture of the process. Should we recognize the utmost gravity of the process of the emergence of the current model of democratization, it is imperative to consider the elusive contribution of the Constitutional Commission (“Komisi Konstitusi”) as a small cadre of Indonesia’s intellectual elites. Needless to say, this “other” process has been overlooked by the available scholarly accounts up to a point where it occupies …

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) play an important role in tumor immunity and comprise of subsets that have distinct phenotype, function, and ontology. Transcriptomic analyses of human medulloblastoma, the most common malignant pediatric brain cancer, showed that medulloblastomas (MBs) with activated sonic hedgehog signaling (SHH-MB) have significantly more TAMs than other MB subtypes. Therefore, we examined MB-associated TAMs by single-cell RNA sequencing of autochthonous murine SHH-MB at steady state and under two distinct treatment modalities: molecular-targeted inhibitor and radiation. Our analyses reveal significant TAM heterogeneity, identify markers of ontologically distinct TAM subsets, and show the impact of brain microenvironment on the differentiation …

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

Neoadjuvant therapy is integral to the treatment of early-stage breast cancer. Goals of treatment include surgical downstaging of the tumor, rendering inoperable tumors resectable, and de-escalating axillary surgery in those with clinically positive nodes. Additionally, response to treatment provides important prognostic information regarding risk of recurrence and guides future adjuvant treatment. Although chemotherapy serves as the backbone of neoadjuvant treatment, an increased understanding of the tumor's clinical course as well as its molecular and genetic make-up aids in individualizing treatment and developing novel agents. This review summarizes current clinical approaches and the future direction to the management of breast cancer …
