Spectest: Specification-Based Compiler Testing, Richard Schumi, Jun Sun
Spectest: Specification-Based Compiler Testing, Richard Schumi, Jun Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Compilers are error-prone due to their high complexity. They are relevant for not only general purpose programming languages, but also for many domain specific languages. Bugs in compilers can potentially render all programs at risk. It is thus crucial that compilers are systematically tested, if not verified. Recently, a number of efforts have been made to formalise and standardise programming language semantics, which can be applied to verify the correctness of the respective compilers. In this work, we present a novel specification-based testing method named SpecTest to better utilise these semantics for testing. By applying an executable semantics as test …
The Absence Or Misuse Of Statistics In Forensic Science As A Contributor To Wrongful Convictions: From Pattern Matching To Medical Opinions About Child Abuse, Keith A. Findley
The Absence Or Misuse Of Statistics In Forensic Science As A Contributor To Wrongful Convictions: From Pattern Matching To Medical Opinions About Child Abuse, Keith A. Findley
Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)
The new scrutiny that has been applied to the forensic sciences since the emergence of DNA profiling as the gold standard three decades ago has identified numerous concerns about the absence of a solid scientific footing for most disciplines. This article examines one of the lesser-considered problems that afflicts virtually all of the pattern-matching (or “individualization”) disciplines (largely apart from DNA), and even undermines the validity of other forensic disciplines like forensic pathology and medical determinations about child abuse, particularly Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma (SBS/AHT). That problem is the absence or misuse of statistics. This article begins by applying …
It’S Worth Whatever Someone Paid For It: How Courts Have Misinterpreted Bfp’S Reasoning, Jacob Ryder
It’S Worth Whatever Someone Paid For It: How Courts Have Misinterpreted Bfp’S Reasoning, Jacob Ryder
Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)
Historically, bankruptcy courts have used the Bankruptcy Code’s avoidance powers—fraudulent conveyances in § 548 and preferential transfers in § 547—to avoid pre-bankruptcy-petition transfers. These avoidance powers were used even when the transfer in question was a mortgage or tax foreclosure sale. This has changed in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion in BFP v. Resolution Trust Corp. The BFP Court concluded that § 548 could not be used to avoid a mortgage foreclosure sale that complied with state foreclosure law. To do so, the Court had to interpret the operative language in § 548: “reasonably equivalent value.” The Court …
Pretrial Custody And Miranda, Kit Kinports
Pretrial Custody And Miranda, Kit Kinports
Washington and Lee Law Review
In two recent opinions, Maryland v. Shatzer and Howes v. Fields, the Supreme Court concluded that inmates serving prison sentences were not in custody for purposes of Miranda—in Shatzer’s case while he was living among the general prison population and in Fields’s case while he was undergoing police interrogation. The question addressed in this Article is one that has divided the lower courts in the wake of those two decisions: the impact of the Court’s rulings on the hundreds of thousands of pretrial detainees in this country, many of whom are poor, Black, and Brown. This Article maintains that …

Branded Drug Companies Are Successfully Asserting The Doctrine Of Equivalents In Hatch-Waxman Litigation, Christopher M. Holman
Branded Drug Companies Are Successfully Asserting The Doctrine Of Equivalents In Hatch-Waxman Litigation, Christopher M. Holman
Faculty Works
This article reports the results of a study analyzing every Federal Circuit decision the author could find dating back to 2005 that applies the doctrine equivalents (DOE) in the context of pharmaceutical patent litigation, and in particular infringement lawsuits brought against Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) applicants by branded drug companies under the Hatch-Waxman Act. The results of this study show that pharmaceutical innovators were prevailing against would-be generic competitors under the DOE both prior to, and subsequent to, a 2007 article by Professors Lemley and Allison describing the demise of the doctrine equivalents, but that patentees’ success rate has …
To Implement Or Not To Implement: Safe Opioid Injection Sites As A Solution To The Opioid Crisis, Kayla Keister
To Implement Or Not To Implement: Safe Opioid Injection Sites As A Solution To The Opioid Crisis, Kayla Keister
Senior Honors Theses
The opioid epidemic has been a crisis in the United States for the last 30-40 years but is just now being popularized by the American public. One potential up-and-coming solution to the opioid crisis is the implementation of safe opioid injection sites, which are locations where individuals may bring drugs to inject under the supervised care of medical professionals. They are currently being used in Canada as well as several Western European countries. The question remains, however, as to whether or not the United States is ready for the implementation sites in regard to public opinion, finances, and ethics.
Vaccine Hesitancy & Study Of Attitudes And Barriers Towards The Influenza Vaccine In Public Health Students At Liberty University, Mikayla Zook
Senior Honors Theses
Every year 2.5 million deaths worldwide are prevented because of vaccinations. Vaccine hesitancy is defined as delayed acceptance or refusal of vaccination and is a global threat to public health. Attitudes and barriers towards vaccines vary and change from group to group. Eighty-five percent of surveyed public health students at Liberty University did not receive the seasonal influenza vaccine. Their attitudes and barriers included: “I did not have time to receive a flu vaccination”, “I believe that as a result of the flu shot, I may actually get the flu”, and “I do not believe I am in danger of …

Mrna Vaccinations For The Prevention Of Viral Infections, Isaac Underhill
Mrna Vaccinations For The Prevention Of Viral Infections, Isaac Underhill
Senior Honors Theses
mRNA vaccines for the prevention of infection disease have gained significant traction in the last three decades, specifically with the recent emergency approval of two COVID-19 vaccines (Oliver, Sara E et al., 2020; Rauch et al., 2018a). mRNA vaccines occupy a unique space in immunology because of their utilization of cellular mechanisms to produce viral proteins, and their simplicity and ease of manufacture (Cullis & Hope, 2017). These vaccines have shown strong humoral and cell-mediated adaptive immune responses (Rauch et al., 2018b) . In addition, side effects of the vaccines have been limited and subject response is manipulatable by varying …
The Application Of Biomechanical Technology In Sports, Timothy Leckrone
The Application Of Biomechanical Technology In Sports, Timothy Leckrone
Senior Honors Theses
Technology in biomechanics encompasses eight major categories: artificial optical devices, anthropometry, timing devices, electrogoniometry, electromyography, dynamometry, inertial tracking systems, and modeling and simulation. As technology improves and becomes more accessible to the general population, it becomes easier to implement biomechanical technology into sports. For each area of focus, biomechanical technology has numerous points of current application or potential application. This application has benefit in injury prevention, technique improvement, rule enforcement, performance optimization, overall health and condition analysis, sports timing, and product development and testing. This thesis examines each area in turn as well as the various tools implemented in order …
A Flying Threat Coming To Sahel And East Africa? A Brief Review, Håvard Haugstvedt
A Flying Threat Coming To Sahel And East Africa? A Brief Review, Håvard Haugstvedt
Journal of Strategic Security
Non-state actors have been experimenting with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for two decades. This has become widely known over the 5 years, as both ISIS and the Houthis have adapted weaponized UAVs into their repertoires. As the Sahel and East Africa regions experience a rise in violence from non-state actors, and given that groups here are affiliated with groups in the Middle East, this paper seeks to explore the possibility and likelihood of weaponized UAVs being used on the battlefield in these regions. By utilizing both scholarly work and other reporting from these regions, this paper finds that there is …
Bert Argues: How Attention Informs Argument Mining, Ting Chen
Bert Argues: How Attention Informs Argument Mining, Ting Chen
Honors Theses
Argument mining is the automatic identification and extraction of structure from argumentative language. Previous works have constrained the argument structure to forming strictly trees in order to utilize efficient tree-specific techniques. However, arguments in the wild are unlikely to exhibit this constrained structure. Given the recent trend of fine-tuning large pre-trained models to reach state of the art performance on a variety of Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks, we look to leverage the power of these deep contextualized word embeddings towards the task of non-tree argument mining. In this paper, we introduce a new pipeline which utilizes pre-trained BERT based …

Pushout, Persistence, Pullback, And Resistance: The Unnecessarily Complicated Experiences Of Women Of Color In Stem, Edna A. Olvera , '21
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
In this thesis project, I explore the unnecessarily complicated path of persistence for women of color in STEM. I find that these students are pushed out by the larger culture and climate of STEM which is hostile to their existence. However, there are students that are not pushed out but rather chose to leave STEM in favor of other academic pursuits. For students that do persist, the strategies they engage in order to persist are strategic and agentic. These students are aware that they must navigate STEM carefully. Within persisting, students also resist and push back against the dominant STEM …
Dancing In The Liminal Tension: A Phenomenological Study Of How Queer Black Boys Manifest Happiness In An Urban Midwest High School, Kendrick D. Johnson
Dancing In The Liminal Tension: A Phenomenological Study Of How Queer Black Boys Manifest Happiness In An Urban Midwest High School, Kendrick D. Johnson
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
Urban public schools, as social institutions, have historically played an integral role in reproducing the oppressive ideologies of society writ large. As we depart an era of cautious optimism, many LGBTQ students are teetering on the brink of hopelessness and despair. So often many of these students’ voices—particularly those of queer Black boys—are still silenced. Ergo, there is a sense of urgency on the part of educators, researchers, and policy-makers to understand how and why queer Black boys consistently disrupt the hegemonic terrain of schools by transforming them into liminal spaces; it is in these sacred spaces-in-between that new identity …
Measuring The Impact Of Residency Requirements And The Relationship With The Citizens In The Community, Daniel Villa
Measuring The Impact Of Residency Requirements And The Relationship With The Citizens In The Community, Daniel Villa
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
Community policing is best described as how police departments work together with the community in solving problems. In several major U.S. cities, police departments have changed their residency requirements allowing their officers to reside outside of the municipality in which they are employed. One can assume that officers residing outside the community they serve may not have a high level of engagement in the area in which they work. The current movements to defund police departments led by politicians and members of various communities would imply that residing outside of the municipality in which officer's work would have no impact, …

African American youth are five times as likely as whites to be detained or committed to youth facilities; 1 out of 10 high school dropouts are institutionalized. $8–21 billion is spent locking up juvenile delinquents. The educational system has failed many African American youth, which can lead them into delinquency. These youth are disregarded in the educational system, placed in overcrowded classrooms, and often dismissed as unable to learn. The results of this are school to prison pipeline. Many youths have learning disabilities that are not addressed by teachers, so youth began acting out. These are acts of attention and …

The Trauma Of Awakening To Racism: Did The Tragic Killing Of George Floyd Result In Cultural Trauma For Whites?, Angela Onwuachi-Willig
Faculty Scholarship
The act of witnessing the killing of George Floyd, a forty-six-year-old, African-American father, brother, partner, and son, at the hands of the police caused many white individuals to experience an epiphany about racism, specifically structural racism, in the United States. Following the horrific killing of George Floyd, many white people began to shift their thinking about the existence and prevalence of racialized police brutality, reconsidering the manner in which they had always viewed the world around them. Indeed, many white individuals began to recognize and acknowledge the varied ways in which whiteness worked to privilege them in our society, even …

Cei Hub Failure Following A Cascadia Earthquake Event: Preliminary Modeling Of A Liquid Fuel Spill In The Lower Willamette And Columbia Rivers, Mike Du Bose
Civil and Environmental Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Critical Energy Infrastructure (CEI) Hub in Northwest Portland, OR spans a six-mile stretch of the Lower Willamette River and stores 90% of Oregon’s liquid fuel supply and 100% of the jet fuel for PDX. The CEI Hub is also built entirely on liquefiable soils which are likely to fail during a Cascadia earthquake event. The purpose of this project was to model a liquid fuel spill in the Lower Willamette and Columbia Rivers using the CE-QUAL-W2 model. Several scenarios were developed to account for different environmental conditions, (e.g., high and low discharge years) and varying spill durations (e.g., rapid …
Not My Problem? Landlord Liability For Tenant-On-Tenant Harassment, Aric Short
Not My Problem? Landlord Liability For Tenant-On-Tenant Harassment, Aric Short
UC Law Journal
Tenant-on-tenant harassment because of a victim’s race, gender, or other protected status, is a severe and increasingly widespread problem often targeting vulnerable tenants. The creation of a hostile housing environment violates the federal Fair Housing Act (FHA), and victims may recover from their abusers, whether they are landlords or fellow tenants. But plaintiffs in two recent FHA lawsuits sought recovery from their landlords for something different: their landlords’ failure to intervene in and stop harassment committed by other tenants. These suits raise novel and important questions about the scope of the FHA, but the two courts disagreed about how the …

The Influence Of Channel Deepening On Tides, River Discharge Effects, And Storm Surge, Stefan A. Talke, Ramin Familkhalili, David A. Jay
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
We combine archival research, semi-analytical models, and numerical simulations to address the following question: how do changes to channel geometry alter tidal properties and flood dynamics in a hyposynchronous, strongly frictional estuary with a landward decay in tidal amplitudes? Records in the Saint Johns River Estuary since the 1890s show that tidal range has doubled in Jacksonville, Florida. Near the estuary inlet, tidal discharge approximately doubled but tidal amplitudes increased only ~6%. Modeling shows that increased shipping channel depths from 5-6 to ~13m drove the observed changes, with other factors like channel shortening and width reduction producing comparatively minor effects. …
