Florida State University Law Review

This Article merges one of our most ancient technologies for the promotion of welfare-advice-with some of our most recent-artificial intelligence (Al) and big data. AI is already writing novels, poetry, newspaper articles, and tweets. Big data may soon capture not only our online activities, but also our real-time heart rate, sleep patterns, and even our current mood. This is the first Article to introduce and examine the possibility of AI advice. AI advice offers the potential for exceedingly accurate personalized recommendations. It also reveals important limits within the burgeoning literature on personalized law. The Article first rejects recent attempts to …

Understanding The Perspectives Of First-Generation 4-H Members, Kristy Lee Ouellette Phd

Muskie School Dissertations

Informal education programs like 4-H have the potential to expose young people to opportunities and experiences which may lead to increased social and educational capital. Previous research has consistently found that young people thrive within the 4-H Youth Development program.

The study identified commonalities throughout the multiple modes of participation and identified the ways in which participants are indeed on a thriving trajectory. It involved 12 first-generation 4-H members in Maine between the ages of 14-19. Through the use of in-depth interviews and the creation of ecomaps, this qualitative case study uncovered participants’ perspectives of the Maine 4-H program. This …

Musculoskeletal Modeling Of The Pelvis And Lumbar Spine During Running, Ruth Higgins, Maryam Moeini, Hunter Bennett, Stacie Ringleb

College of Engineering & Technology (Batten) Posters

Musculoskeletal modeling provides an alternative to in-vivo characteristics that are difficult to directly measure for movements such as running, especially for trunk muscles and joints. The full-body-lumbar-spine (FBLS) model by Raabe and Chaudhari, 2016 is an OpenSim model created for simulations of jogging. The lifting full-body (LFB) model by Beaucage-Gauvreau et al., 2018 is an adaptation of the FBLS created for estimating spinal loads during lifting. PURPOSE: Determine validity of the FBLS and LFB models in simulating pelvis and lumbar spine kinematics during running. METHODS: Inverse Kinematics were executed using experimental data for the FBLS and LFB models. To …

Can Permissionless Blockchains Avoid Governance And The Law?, Eric Alston, Wilson Law, Ilia Murtazashvili, Martin Weiss Apr 2021

Can Permissionless Blockchains Avoid Governance And The Law?, Eric Alston, Wilson Law, Ilia Murtazashvili, Martin Weiss

Notre Dame Journal on Emerging Technologies

Permissionless (or public) blockchain networks are a new form of decentralized private governance in the digital sphere. Though legal scholars recognize the significance of law in the use of blockchain, existing research using legal and institutional perspectives leaves blockchain governance as something of a black box. We provide a more granular analysis, finding that blockchain governance operates on four distinct levels. Governance at the protocol layer involves discrete institutional design choices intended to constrain network members’ incentives in an ongoing sense. Subsidiary governance arises from the need for communities to draft protocol updates and from the fact that governance protocol …

Sound In Color, Amber Rhodes

Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects

“Sound in Color” is an interactive audio-visual experience designed to explore the relationship between sound, color, and emotions. Taking place on the Massey Concert Hall stage, the project is inspired by synesthesia and incorporates research on color psychology. Participants are invited to select an emotion and color. As the user hums into a microphone, they hear their emotions expressed through sound in their headphones and watch as the lights on stage respond to their vocal cues.

Type 2 Diabetes And Exercise, Weslyn Almond, Meredith Furgeson Apr 2021

Type 2 Diabetes And Exercise, Weslyn Almond, Meredith Furgeson

EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters

Type 2 diabetes is estimated to afflict over 400 million people worldwide (Javeed & Matveyenko, 2018). Type 2 diabetes arises from a combination of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors including physical inactivity and poor nutrition (Stanford & Goodyear, 2014). People with type 2 diabetes have normal or high insulin levels, but tissues such as liver, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissue become resistant to insulin. The pancreas compensates by producing more insulin and this increase in circulating insulin can result in impaired glucose transport into these tissues (Stanford & Goodyear, 2014).

An Interdisciplinary Approach: Schizophrenia Derails Heteronormative Expectations In Psychological Narratives 2021, Bobbie Jo Weaver

Master's Theses

Required introductory psychology courses teach students a general and oversimplified version of the immense number of subfields within Psychology studies, much like introductory literature classes compress different genera throughout history into a miniscule number of “representative” texts. Nevertheless, these footholds generate an entryway into a whole new world of (specialized) exploration. Reading a text such as The Quiet Room: A Journey out of the Torment of Madness by Lori Schiller and Amanda Bennett provides a window for many students to crawl into one of Psychology’s darkest shadows, the field of abnormal psychology. Schiller’s non-fictional memoir, The Quiet Room, tells readers …

Finding Rhythm Through Auditory Imagery: An Approach To Parkinson’S Disease Treatment, Jacqueline Larivee Apr 2021

Finding Rhythm Through Auditory Imagery: An Approach To Parkinson’S Disease Treatment, Jacqueline Larivee

Psychology Student Work

The following research article explores music therapy in the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease (PD). The general interaction between the rhythmic properties of music and motor associated brain areas is discussed at length. These interactions provide a basis for understanding how music therapy can address the rhythmic impairments of the disease. Dance therapy, Musical Sonification, Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation (RAS) are three types of music-based therapies that have been found to be effective in treating the motor symptoms of PD. These therapies may be particularly effective for the PD population because they draw upon musical rhythm as an external pacing cue. While external …

Novel Tests Of Gravity Below Fifty Microns, Frankie Trombetta, Kyle Galaz, Michael Gengo, Alyssa M. Johnson, Jesse Mendez, Emily Ord, Charles D. Hoyle, Claire Rogers

IdeaFest 2021

The Gravity Lab at Humboldt State is concerned with measuring the force of gravity at unprecedented distance scales. Theories new and old make predictions about how gravity should behave, but accurate measurements of gravitational forces between objects close together have remained challenging. The crux of the experiment lies in sufficiently silencing the non-gravitational forces acting at the measuring site, and accomplishing this requires applying at least a little knowledge from most undergraduate physics classes. The implications of progress in this lab make it exciting to a general audience while remaining beneficial from an undergraduate learning perspective.

Effects Of The Coronavirus Pandemic On United States Custom Grain And Forage Harvesting’S Labor Supply And The 2020 Harvest, Dalton Black, Jason Holcomb Apr 2021

Effects Of The Coronavirus Pandemic On United States Custom Grain And Forage Harvesting’S Labor Supply And The 2020 Harvest, Dalton Black, Jason Holcomb

2021 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Oral Presentations

The global coronavirus pandemic disrupted migratory labor around the world, including foreign seasonal labor that travels to the United States to work in the mobile custom grain and forage harvesting industry that operates primarily in Great Plains states. The pandemic caused the United States to implement bans on travel from labor sending countries, and to delay the processing of the H-2A and J-1 visa nonimmigrant visas used by foreign custom grain and forage harvesting employees to enter the US. Many transnational workers were thus delayed or prevented from reporting for jobs that require training before harvest begins in April or …

College Students' Understanding Of Analog Time Keeping And Rotational Directionality, Katelyn Collins Apr 2021

College Students' Understanding Of Analog Time Keeping And Rotational Directionality, Katelyn Collins

2021 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Oral Presentations

Although time-telling using analog clocks is a topic covered in KY math standards in 1st and 2nd grades, and most older adults assume that everyone can read analog clocks, recent media reports and personal anecdotes have indicated that an ever-increasing proportion of young people struggle to correctly read them because most timing devices they are exposed to are digital. Although the personal and academic consequences of not mastering this skill are unknown, it is important to document the extent of this issue at a college level. Of particular interest to the researchers is the description of rotational direction as clockwise …

Asynchronous Delivery Format: Differential Effects On Performance And Engagement, Jessica Hamm, Leah Hayes, Makayla Reynolds, Raeanna Whitaker, Reganne Miller, Gregory Corso

2021 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Oral Presentations

In recent years, the number of online courses offered to students has increased. This increase brings the question of what format of online learning is the best for students. The purpose for this study was to investigate the effects of three asynchronous presentation formats on participant performance and engagement: slides with video-audio, slides with audio, and slides alone. We hypothesized significant differences among the formats in participant performance and engagement (best in video-audio format, worst in slides alone format). Participants (N=27) were randomly assigned to one of the three formats. Each format presented information about a fake island created by …

Documenting Night Sky Brightness Using Sky Quality Meters, Ryan Sergent, Jennifer Birriel Apr 2021

Documenting Night Sky Brightness Using Sky Quality Meters, Ryan Sergent, Jennifer Birriel

2021 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Oral Presentations

The use of artificial light at night contributes to light pollution across the globe. Prior to 2005, artificial sources of light at night were mainly high- and low-pressure sodium light sources, which are yellow rich. The increased use of LED lighting is changing spectral signature of the night sky is changing. LEDs emit a peak in blue light. Blue light is scattered much more effectively than yellow and red, increased use of LEDs will increase both glare and skyglow. Unihedron’s Sky Quality Meter (SQM) is an instrument used widely by astronomers to measure the luminance of the night sky. Data …

Negligent Innovation, Oskar Liivak Apr 2021

Negligent Innovation, Oskar Liivak

Florida State University Law Review

Innovation is the buzzword of our time. Everyone wants to be an innovator. Corporations strive to be innovative. All this hype is good. Technological innovation is accepted as the single most important driver of economic growth. We should be obsessed with innovation. As such, it is not at all surprising that innovation and technological commercialization lie at the heart of justifications for the patent system. But there is something quite odd about these theories and indeed with our patent system: they never actually require innovation. A patentee is not obligated to take on the risky work of development and commercialization. …
