Prominent Biblical Themes During The Revolutionary War, Jacob Jones
Prominent Biblical Themes During The Revolutionary War, Jacob Jones
Tenor of Our Times
Ever since humanity has gone to war with itself, both sides of the conflict often times have used respective religious texts to argue that their god or gods were on their side and against their opponents. Saint Augustine promulgated this idea further in his theory of Just War. Colonists during the American Revolution were not exempt from this tendency but participated fully in it. Because of their Calvinistic leanings, influenced by Edwards and the First Great Awakening, North American colonists frequently referenced their own Divine text, the Bible, and went to Sacred Scripture to prove to their side that America …

Application Of Eh-Ph Diagrams On Acid Leaching Systems For The Recovery Of Rees From Bastnaesite, Monazite And Xenotime, Peijia Lin, Xinbo Yang, Joshua M. Werner, Rick Q. Honaker
Mining Engineering Faculty Publications
Bastnaesite, monazite and xenotime are rare earth minerals (REMs) that are typical sources for rare earth elements (REEs). To advance the understanding of their leaching and precipitation behavior in different hydrometallurgical processes, Eh-pH diagrams were constructed and modified using the HSC 9.9 software. The aqueous stability of rare earth elements in H2O and acid leaching systems, i.e., the REE-Ligands-H2O systems, were depicted and studied based on the Eh-pH diagrams. This study considers the most relevant lixiviants, their resulting equilibrium states and the importance in the hydrometallurgical recovery of rare earth elements (REMs). A literature review was …

Healthcare In A Vulnerable Population: Female Inmates In The Usa, Shanon Ward
Psychology Student Work
The prison population of the United States is estimated at around 6,410,000 (Maruschak & Minton, 2018). Studies have found that access to healthcare for inmates is subpar with a lack of routine examinations and preventative care and an earlier onset and higher rate of chronic medical conditions than the general population. In addition to the lack of healthcare for all inmates, specific at-risk subpopulations are likely to receive even less healthcare support due to discrimination and “invisible” illnesses. This research explores the health care and support services available to an underrepresented and vulnerable group of prisoners: Female inmates, pregnant inmates, …

The Effects Of Maternal Behavior And Environmental Enrichment On Behavior And Cognition In Sprague-Dawley Rats, Kathryn C. Bates
The Effects Of Maternal Behavior And Environmental Enrichment On Behavior And Cognition In Sprague-Dawley Rats, Kathryn C. Bates
Longwood Senior Theses
Early environments critically impact the development of many organisms. Exposure to varying maternal care behaviors and environmental enrichments can cause persisting changes throughout a rat’s life. The current study examines the effect of high and low levels of maternal care and environmental enrichment on anxiety, resilience, spatial memory, and non-spatial memory. Maternal rats were identified as Good or Bad mothers based on their pup retrieval speed. Their pups were then sorted by maternal care they experienced and placed into two housing conditions: enriched, and control (resulting in four conditions total). Each group was assessed on four behavioral tests including the …

Brewing Meets Biotechnology: A Survey Of Genetic Variation In Flocculation Proteins, Sarah A. Dooley
Longwood Senior Theses
For thousands of years, yeast have been utilized for food and beverage fermentations and more recently have become important model organisms for biomedical research. A catalog of phenotypic characteristics available to brewers can be attributed to domestication and artificial selection as well as chromosomal rearrangements and evolutionary events. Flocculation, the natural capacity for yeast cells aggregate into flocs at the end of the fermentation process, has a direct effect on the final fermentation product.. In order to flocculate, yeast strains must carry genes belonging to the flocculin protein family that will promote cell-cell adhesion. The flocculin genes, FLO1, FLO5 …

Background: A growing body of scientific evidence suggests that face masks can slow the spread of COVID-19 and save lives, but mask usage remains low across many parts of the world, and strategies to increase mask usage remain untested and unclear. Methods: We conducted a cluster-randomized trial of community-level mask promotion in rural Bangladesh involving 341,830 adults in 600 villages. We employed a series of strategies to promote mask usage, including free household distribution of surgical or cloth masks, distribution and promotion at markets and mosques, mask advocacy by Imams during Friday prayers, role modeling by local leaders, promoters …

Presence Effects In Virtual Reality Based On User Characteristics: Attention, Enjoyment, And Memory, Si Jung Kim, Teemu H. Laine, Hae Jung Suk
College of Engineering Faculty Research
Presence refers to the emotional state of users where their motivation for thinking and acting arises based on the perception of the entities in a virtual world. The immersion level of users can vary when they interact with different media content, which may result in different levels of presence especially in a virtual reality (VR) environment. This study investigates how user characteristics, such as gender, immersion level, and emotional valence on VR, are related to the three elements of presence effects (attention, enjoyment, and memory). A VR story was created and used as an immersive stimulus in an experiment, which …

Twisting van der Waals heterostructures to induce correlated many body states provides a novel tuning mechanism in solid state physics. In this work, we theoretically investigate the fate of the surface Dirac cone of a three-dimensional topological insulator subject to a superlattice potential. Using a combination of diagrammatic perturbation theory, lattice model simulations, and ab initio calculations we elucidate the unique aspects of twisting a single Dirac cone with an induced moiré potential and the role of the bulk topology on the reconstructed surface band structure. We report a dramatic renormalization of the surface Dirac cone velocity as well as …

Systemic insulin sensitivity shows a diurnal rhythm with a peak upon waking1,2. The molecular mechanism that underlies this temporal pattern is unclear. Here we show that the nuclear receptors REV-ERB-α and REV-ERB-β (referred to here as ‘REV-ERB’) in the GABAergic (γ-aminobutyric acid-producing) neurons in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) (SCNGABA neurons) control the diurnal rhythm of insulin-mediated suppression of hepatic glucose production in mice, without affecting diurnal eating or locomotor behaviours during regular light–dark cycles. REV-ERB regulates the rhythmic expression of genes that are involved in neurotransmission in the SCN, and modulates the oscillatory firing activity of SCNGABA neurons. Chemogenetic stimulation …

3,4-Methamphetamine (METH) has not been studied as a treatment method for people who have Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD). ASPD is mainly characterized by a lack of cognitive and emotional empathy. Previous research expresses that emotional empathy is achievable through drug treatment with empathogens such as ecstacy and psilocybin, but there has been no successful treatment to improve cognitive empathy. METH has not been used in previous research due it being very addictive and detrimental to cognitive function if taken at high levels over an extended period of …
The Impact Of Long-Term Social Housing On Biconditional Association Task Performance And Neuron Ensembles In The Anterior Cingulate Cortex And Ca3, Anne Dankert
Psychology Student Scholarship
Majors: Biology and Psychology
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Victoria Templer, Psychology Cognitive decline and neuronal activity changes are hallmarks of advancing age across species. Positive social relationships have been correlated with fewer age-related cognitive difficulties in humans. However, the mechanisms by which sociality might protect against cognitive aging and if this can be modeled in a rodent model remain unknown. We investigated differences in accuracy on a biconditional association task, which measures cognitive flexibility, and corresponding neuronal activity in the Anterior Cingulate Cortex and CA3 of the hippocampus between socially and nonsocially housed aged rats and individually housed young controls. Findings …

Thinking And Talking About Kinds, Ye Ji Seoung
Theses and Dissertations
Three experiments investigated whether definite singular generics (e.g., the dog barks) require that the kind does not contain multiple subkinds. No effect of generic form was found in experiment 1 and 3. However, experiment 2 found people thought there were fewer subkinds when definite singulars referred to the kind.
The Impact Of Location And Time Of Day On The Expression Of Social And Physical Maintenance Behaviors In Wild Asian Elephants (Elephas Maximus) In Thailand, Summer Fiori
Theses and Dissertations
Much of what we know about Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) behavioral ecology is the result of long-term ethological studies on wild elephants in India and Sri Lanka or experimental research on captive elephant behavior and cognition. While it is important to study the behavior and ecology of elephants to understand the evolution of adaptations that have made them well-suited for their natural environments, there is also a growing need to study populations of wild Asian elephants for applied conservation purposes. More specifically, elephants are endangered and are facing increasing threats such as human-elephant conflict. In this study, behavioral data …

Aspen Bibliography
European aspen (Populus tremula L.) is a keystone species for biodiversity of boreal forests. Large-diameter aspens maintain the diversity of hundreds of species, many of which are threatened in Fennoscandia. Due to a low economic value and relatively sparse and scattered occurrence of aspen in boreal forests, there is a lack of information of the spatial and temporal distribution of aspen, which hampers efficient planning and implementation of sustainable forest management practices and conservation efforts. Our objective was to assess identification of European aspen at the individual tree level in a southern boreal forest using high-resolution photogrammetric point cloud …

The Soul’S Access To Divine Will: Implications Of Stoic Reason, Christian Will, And Galenic Body In Reformulating The Platonic Philosophy Of The Human Person, Noelle Canty
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Recent anthropologies of the human person reject the Platonic emphasis on “King Reason” because it seems dualistic. In the history of psychology, “anthropology” refers to the structure of a human person. Although Plato views the will as only a part of the rational soul, the psychological anthropologies of three Platonic writers seem to develop Platonic thought through placing the human will above reason. The Stoic, Epictetus, wrote about reason; the Catholic, Erasmus, wrote about the soul; and the Roman doctor, Galen, wrote about the body. Viewing the will as central could result in an anthropology of the human person which …
