Potential Interactions Between Gper1 And Hiv Tat-Mediated Neurotoxicity, Shiwani Thapa
Potential Interactions Between Gper1 And Hiv Tat-Mediated Neurotoxicity, Shiwani Thapa
Honors Theses
Great advances have been made in the treatment of HIV, however, new infections remain consistent each year with no effective cure. The early entry of HIV virus into the central nervous system is thought to contribute to the development of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders. One of the mechanisms of neurological impairment may involve actions of the neurotoxic HIV viral protein, trans-activator of transcription (Tat). Tat can be secreted from infected cells and acts as an excitotoxin, increasing the intracellular flux of Ca2+ , promoting mitochondrial dysfunction, and neural cell damage/death. Previous experiments have shown that steroid hormones such as estrogen can …

The Effects Of Cochlear Implantation And Educational Audiology Services On Language Skills: A Case Study, Madison Josey
Honors Theses
Purpose
Hearing loss can affect many aspects of a child’s life, particularly their language abilities and academic performance. Literature shows that children with hearing loss are more likely to have language deficits compared to their hearing peers (Tomblin et al., 2015). The degree to which language skills are affected has been shown to correlate with various factors, such as age of identification, hearing levels, and amount of speech and language intervention (Delage & Tuller, 2020; Shojaei et al., 2016). The aim of this research study was to assess how cochlear implantation and speech-language intervention affects the language skills and academic …

The outer segment (OS) organelle of vertebrate photoreceptors is a highly specialized cilium evolved to capture light and initiate light response. The plasma membrane which envelopes the OS plays vital and diverse roles in supporting photoreceptor function and health. However, little is known about the identity of its protein constituents, as this membrane cannot be purified to homogeneity. In this study, we used the technique of protein correlation profiling to identify unique OS plasma membrane proteins. To achieve this, we used label-free quantitative MS to compare relative protein abundances in an enriched preparation of the OS plasma membrane with a …

Visual Spatial Memory In Young Typical Developing Children And Children With Developmental Language Disorder: A Pilot Study, Samantha Mckenna
Visual Spatial Memory In Young Typical Developing Children And Children With Developmental Language Disorder: A Pilot Study, Samantha Mckenna
Honors Scholar Theses
This pilot study aimed to examine nonlinguistic deficits associated with visual spatial memory in young children. A child with DLD was compared to both younger-aged (YATD) and same-aged (SATD) typically developing peers for performance on a visual spatial memory matching game. It was hypothesized that if children with DLD have deficits in nonlinguistic domains, they should not perform as well as their same-aged peers. Since children with DLD are similar in language to their younger typically developing children, their performance was compared to a group of typically developing children at least one year younger. If children with DLD performed less …

The Fracture Behavior Of Stitched Sandwich Composites, Daniel Adam Drake
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to evaluate the influence of through-the-thickness reinforcements on the fracture behavior of stitched sandwich composites and to develop predictive methodologies to aid in simulating their damage-tolerant capability. Sandwich composites are widely used for their high stiffness-to-weight ratio due to their unique material architecture, which is composed of two rigid, outer facesheets that are bonded to a light-weight internal core. However, sandwich composites are limited by their low interlaminar strengths and can develop core-to-facesheet separation when subjected to low out-of-plane loads. In this study, sandwich composites were manufactured with through-the-thickness reinforcements, or stitches, to act …

There are great benefits to be had should the United States, one of the global leaders in economic strength and political power, ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (“CRC”). The mystery of the United States’s ultimate reluctance to ratify the CRC, despite the nation’s central role in the drafting process, has been interrogated for years. Scholars and policy- makers have developed compelling narratives regarding obstacles to the United States’s ratification and implementation of the CRC. However well- reasoned the arguments for ratification are, there has been little progress in persuading the United States to ratify …

The Effects Of Fictional Literature On Real-World Perceptions Of Students, Dylan Dowty
Honors Theses
The ways in which fiction affect the perceptions of high school students’ realities are many, and they vary widely depending on the book read. While lessons can be learned from every fictional book, certain types of books are more beneficial and relevant for students. Young adult literature, while often overlooked, is a significant source of students’ perspective shifts and metacognition. Every book has a lesson that it can teach students, but contemporary young adult literature deserves to be taught in schools alongside the classics in order for students to make personal connections with the texts they read and take an …
