Bridging Physics And Data: Hybrid Modelling Of Nox And Soot Emissions In Alternative-Fuel Diesel Engine, Fatih Okumuş
Bridging Physics And Data: Hybrid Modelling Of Nox And Soot Emissions In Alternative-Fuel Diesel Engine, Fatih Okumuş
Seatific Journal
In this study, a basic machine learning approach based on fuel type for estimating NOx and soot emissions in diesel engines was comparatively evaluated against a physics-based model incorporating physical indicators related to the combustion process. Experimental data were obtained from a single-cylinder, four-stroke diesel engine under single and dual fuel conditions using diesel, biodiesel, and ammonia. Quantities derived from the in-cylinder pressure signal, including IMEP, maximum pressure rise rate, maximum pressure, the crankshaft angle corresponding to maximum pressure, the CA10–CA90 combustion interval, ignition delay and total combustion duration, were integrated into the model as quantitative indicators representing the engine’s …

The current study examines whether state immigration enforcement policies, such as sanctuary policies that limit local police cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, are associated with female homicide rates in the United States (2016–2021). We examine crude female homicide rates from the National Violent Death Reporting System (N = 244 state-years), which we stratify by race and ethnicity (Hispanic of all races, non-Hispanic Black, and non-Hispanic White) and victim–suspect relationship (domestic vs. stranger homicide). State-years with policies that are more protective of immigrants were not associated with higher homicide rates for any group. Instead, state-years with these policies reported significantly lower …

Inverse Kinematics 3d Human Modeling Simulation Based On Multi-View Vision, Guoyu Fang, Yanze Li, Kai Chen, Xiaodong Zhao, Zizhuo Hu, Mingshi Yang, Wanqing Wu, Zichen Wang, Wenkai Guo
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In autonomous driving simulation and industrial virtual reality simulation, there is a high demand for accuracy and robustness in 3D human body modeling. However, current joint-based human modeling approaches suffer from issues such as continuous modeling jitter, local distortion, and poor adaptability to occlusion, which degrade model quality and limit the development of practical applications such as intelligent driving and digital factories. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a multi-view vision-based inverse kinematics 3D human modeling method using a vector quantized variational autoencoder(IK-VQ-VAE). By integrating joint training with an automatic variational gradient descent approach, the proposed method achieves …

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Down syndrome (DS) exceeds 90%. Approximately 50% of people with DS have congenital heart disease (CHD). Having CHD increases risk for early-onset AD in populations without DS, but it is unclear if CHD influences AD in DS.
METHODS: Data from the Alzheimer Biomarker Consortium-Down Syndrome (ABC-DS) were used. Participants with CHD (n = 82, mean age = 39.9 ± 8.5 years, 97.6% White race) were age- and sex-matched to participants without CHD (n = 82, mean age = 40.5 ± 8.1 years, 98.8% White race). Cognitive assessments and Centiloid load …

"Uruk ... We Prefer 'Uruk'": The Representation Of The Orc In The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power, Robert T. Tally Jr.
Journal of Tolkien Research
In Tolkien’s legendarium, there are many complicated characters, vexed figures who combine aspects of what readers might think of as good and evil, but Orcs are, it seems, always and only evil. This despite the fact that Tolkien’s own writings provide ample evidence that Orcs, however loathsome they may appear, are nevertheless people, a “race” that like Elves, Dwarves, Men, and Hobbits maintains social orders and belongs to Middle-earth. The Amazon Prime show The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power offers a glimpse of Orc culture from within, as the audience is introduced to a mysterious new character, …

Gpr156 Is Required In Sensory Hair Cells For Proper Auditory And Vestibular Function., Amandine Jarysta, Brandie Morris Verdone, Elli I Hartig, Kathleen E Cullen, Basile Tarchini
Faculty Research 2026
Proper orientation of the apical cytoskeleton in auditory and vestibular hair cells is essential for their sensory function. A recently identified regulator of hair cell orientation is the G protein-coupled receptor GPR156, which signals through inhibitory heterotrimeric G proteins. In hair cells expressing the transcription factor EMX2, GPR156 is apically enriched and polarized at cell junctions. There, GPR156 signaling reverses the interpretation of tissue-level core planar cell polarity cues, effectively reversing the orientation of Emx2-positive compared to Emx2-negative hair cells. This mechanism establishes key anatomical features, such as the correct alignment of auditory outer hair cells and the …

First Arkansas Records Of The True Bugs Lasiochilus Hirtellus (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Lasiochilidae) And Physopleurella Mundula (Anthocoridae)., S. W. Chordas Iii, R. Tumlison
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
We report 2 uncommon species of true bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera), Lasiochilus hirtellus (Lasiochilidae) and Physopleurella mundula (Anthocoridae), for the first time from Arkansas. This includes the first report of the family Lasiochilidae for Arkansas. Both species were captured in UV light traps set in Clark County. We discuss identification, provide digital images of the voucher specimens and include updated distribution maps (north of Mexico) for both species. With the addition of these 2 species, there are now a total of 7 anthocorid species, among the 3 bug families Lasiochilidae, Anthocoridae and Lytocoridae, known for Arkansas.

This is an article about a course, but shadows a much wider history of online education, media literacies and sonic media.[1] Teaching research methods is difficult.[2] Students hate it. Staff tolerate it. Occasionally, there is a comrade or sister who demonstrates as much commitment to Marxist and feminist research methods as Paris Hilton does to shopping, but most of the time it is hard to summon enthusiasm. Students approach these often mandatory courses with the excitement of a dental appointment. Similarly, academic staff justify such courses as being good for students, like regular flossing. I had a problem. I had …

The Aperspectival Playfulness Of Allan Leslie Combs, Zeke Floro
The Aperspectival Playfulness Of Allan Leslie Combs, Zeke Floro
Journal of Conscious Evolution
This commemorative article reflects on the work of the late Dr. Allan Leslie Combs, a pioneering scholar in consciousness studies and an influential mentor. The essay argues that his scholarly writing, characterized by profound openness, heartfelt compassion, and sharp wit, represents an embodiment of the integral consciousness he writes about. Through a close reading of his essays and a personal reflection on his mentorship, the article connects his playful style to Jean Gebser’s concept of aperspectival consciousness and frames his humor within Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy of divine “play” (lila), concluding that, for Combs, scholarship is an embodied practice …

The Cult Of Exchange Value And The Critical Theory Of Spectacle, Mark P. Worrell
Fast Capitalism
The concept of ‘spectacle’ entered the vocabulary of the social sciences with the publication of Debord’s classic Society of the Spectacle. Debord and company were concerned with art, aesthetics, urbanism, the city, architecture, and so on, but, as Lefebvre points out, as these multiple concerns fell by the wayside the Situationists were left with generally little more than an abstract critique of society and polemics (McDonough 2002: 275-76, 281) with the notion of spectacle at the center of it all. To the extent that Situationism still exerts an influence on critical theory it is apparently in just this notion of …

On 13 August 2009 I deactivated my Facebook social networking account. The world remained on its axis but Facebook’s slightly sinister prediction that my friends would miss me turned out to be correct. A torrent of e-mails and text messages arrived in the days following, asking where I had gone. Many asked me to justify why I left, some out of curiosity and some out of shock. Besides the mundane reasons — such as the ongoing project of limiting procrastination — two substantial arguments developed to explain my deactivation. These relate to voyeurism and the extension of advanced capitalism into …

Performance of generative models (GMs), such as Large Language Models (LLMs), is highly dependent on the quality of the input prompt that is processed using the GM. However, manual prompt engineering is often inefficient and requires specialized expertise. This disclosure describes a method for the automated optimization of structured prompts through an iterative evaluation process. A structured prompt template is initially populated using task descriptions and reference data to generate candidate seed prompts. These candidate seed prompts are executed against a targeted model, and the resulting responses are assessed by an automated evaluator. Based on performance metric(s), a refinement loop …
