Identification Of A Previously Unrecognized Listric Fault Beneath The Acıpayam Graben: Insights From Integrated Dinsar And Field Observations, Semi̇h Eski̇

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The 20 March 2019 Acıpayam earthquake (Mw 5.7) offers a valuable opportunity to examine the complex seismotectonic behavior of the Fethiye-Burdur Fault Zone (FBFZ), a transtensional structure in southwestern Türkiye. This study integrates field observations and focal mechanism data with differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) analysis to reassess the geometry of the causative fault. In contrast to previously proposed northeast-dipping blind fault models, the data obtained in this study indicate a southwest-dipping listric normal-fault system centered on the Yeniköy Fault, projecting beneath alluvial cover. Vertical displacement maps from Sentinel-1 show coseismic subsidence up to 5.8 cm and broader postseismic …

Abic-Based Surficial Density Model Of Türkiye And Tectonic Implications, İlki̇n Özsöz Jan 2026

Abic-Based Surficial Density Model Of Türkiye And Tectonic Implications, İlki̇n Özsöz

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

This study presents a surficial density model of Türkiye derived from the Akaike Bayesian Information Criterion (ABIC) inversion of terrestrial gravity data. By regularizing the gravity field through spatial smoothness constraints, the ABIC method yields optimal Bouguer reduction densities that reflect lateral variations in tectonic architecture, lithological heterogeneity, and upper crustal structure. Over 52,000 georeferenced observations reveal surficial densities ranging from 2.20 to 4.00 g/cm³, with a statistically robust mean of 2.669 ± 0.002 g/cm³ (95% confidence interval), suitable for precision gravity reduction and geodynamic applications. The derived density field delineates key tectonic domains across the Anatolian lithosphere, including extensional …

Spike-Based Architectures For Energy-Efficient Audio Enhancement, Kedar Sandip Fitwe Jan 2026

Spike-Based Architectures For Energy-Efficient Audio Enhancement, Kedar Sandip Fitwe

Theses

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have shown remarkable success in speech denoising; however, their high computational and energy requirements make realtime deployment on edge devices challenging. In contrast, Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) operate using sparse, event-driven spikes—offering a biologically inspired and energy-efficient alternative. In this study, we delve into a Spiking Neural Network (SNN) model that leverages the temporal dynamics of spiking neurons to capture long-range dependencies in the audio signal. By encoding the input audio into sparse and event-driven computations, the SNN can efficiently process the temporal information while requiring significantly fewer computations compared to DNNs. We present a real-time …

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The gut microbiota is crucial to health, yet implementation of microbiota-based therapeutics is limited by the lack of rapid diagnostics. We hypothesize that breath contains gut microbe-derived volatile organic compounds (VOCs) reflecting microbiota composition and metabolism. In healthy children, we found that breath VOC composition (or volatilome), assessed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, correlates with gut microbiome composition and function. By capturing exhaled breath from human-stool-colonized and monocolonized gnotobiotic mice, we profiled breath VOCs and discovered that murine breath is also significantly influenced by the gut microbiome. VOCs from cultured gut microbes were identified in vivo in monocolonized gnotobiotic colonized mice. …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

For aqueous lithium-ion batteries (A-LIBs), the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) poses a significant challenge, as it competes with the primary electrochemical processes of the anode, resulting in capacity loss and reduced cycling stability. In this study, we investigate the use of fluorine-based additives in anodes to mitigate HER in LIBs with aqueous electrolytes including low or high amounts of salt (water-in-salt electrolytes (WiSE)). We synthesized and incorporated three distinct materials into TiO2(B) anodes: aluminum fluoride (AlF3), lithium fluoride (LiF), and 1H,1H,2H, 2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (FAS) using a solution-based method. Among these fluorides containing composite anodes, FAS containing anodes delayed HER onset potentials …

Targeting Smpdl3b To Ameliorate Radiation- And Cisplatin-Induced Renal Toxicity, Youssef Zeidan

All Publications

Kidney toxicity remains a major dose-limiting complication of radiation therapy and platinum-based chemotherapy, yet the molecular determinants of renal susceptibility and resilience to these genotoxic treatments are incompletely understood. Podocytes are particularly vulnerable to such insults, and emerging evidence implicates lipid dysregulation in podocyte injury. This study investigated the role of sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase acid-like 3B (SMPDL3B), a podocyte-enriched lipid-modulating enzyme, in radiation- and cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. Using a doxycycline-inducible, podocyte-specific SMPDL3B transgenic mouse model, renal injury was assessed following focal kidney irradiation, cisplatin administration, or their combination through functional assays, histopathology, ultrastructural analysis, immunofluorescence, and targeted lipidomics. Combined radiation and cisplatin …

Ethics Across The Curriculum: Application To Economics

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

We propose that the study of economics can be enhanced by students learning ethical reasoning within their economics courses. Our method for introducing more robust discussions of the relationship between ethics and economics is to incorporate principles and strategies from the “Ethics Across the Curriculum” program. The methods we used to enhance our own course can be adapted to any economics course and the resources we provide can help any economist become more comfortable with teaching ethical reasoning.

Changes In Math Prerequisites And Student Performance In Business Statistics: Do Math Prerequisites Really Matter? Jan 2026

Changes In Math Prerequisites And Student Performance In Business Statistics: Do Math Prerequisites Really Matter?

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

We use a binary probit model to assess the impact of several changes in math prerequisites on student performance in an undergraduate business statistics course. While the initial prerequisites did not necessarily provide students with the necessary math skills, our study, the first to examine the effect of math prerequisite changes, shows that these changes were deleterious to student performance. Our results helped convince the College of Business to change the math prerequisite again beginning with the 2008/2009 academic year. Thus, this study is also the first to actually help strengthen math prerequisites and improve student performance in business statistics.
