Tracker, Eva Miller
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
The Mechanical Engineering Department has faced ongoing challenges with tools being misplaced or removed from the Robotics Research Lab (LB-172). To address this, a retrofit automated inventory tracking system is being developed for the lab toolboxes. The system utilizes limit switches and leaf spring contacts to monitor tool presence, while Near Field Communication (NFC) cards track tool usage by different user groups. The system promotes accountability and allows faculty to procure missing or more commonly used tools. By improving organization and streamlining inventory management, the system aims to offer a cost-effective solution tailored to the lab’s needs. Its effectiveness will …
Modeling The Secondary Catastrophic Disruption Of The Veritas Family, Jarrett Dieterle, Skylar G. Butler, Aiden Kelleher
Modeling The Secondary Catastrophic Disruption Of The Veritas Family, Jarrett Dieterle, Skylar G. Butler, Aiden Kelleher
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
The Veritas asteroid family, located in the outer main belt, is believed to have formed from the catastrophic breakup of a parent body approximately 8.3 million years ago (e.g., Nesvorný et al., 2003). Larger fragments remained in the main belt, while smaller particles evolved inward under radiation forces, forming a toroidal dust structure observable in infrared data as paired bands. Previous studies (e.g., Dermott et al., 2001) have shown that these bands can be linked to their parent families and modeled from their initial disruptions. We propose that the 10° dust bands associated with Veritas may record evidence of a …
Multi-Modal Aerial Object Detection For Enhanced Airport Safety, Joel Samu, Jose Martinez Iii
Multi-Modal Aerial Object Detection For Enhanced Airport Safety, Joel Samu, Jose Martinez Iii
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
The rise of small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) near airports presents growing safety risks, including mid-air collisions, operational disruptions, and security threats. Current detection systems, such as radar and optical tracking, struggle to reliably identify and classify aerial, particularly non-cooperative drones, under variable operational conditions. This research proposes a multi-modal aerial object detection system that combines multiple sensor modalities (Radiofrequency, Vision, Sound) to enable real-time surveillance. By integrating sensor fusion and machine learning (ML), the system aims to improve detection and classification accuracy, reduce false positives, and support Real-time Decision-making for airport safety personnel. The research aims to evaluate system …
Development Of An Artificial Immune System Based Intruder Detection Algorithm For Comparison With A Novel Intruder Detection Strategy., Jaden Caradine
Development Of An Artificial Immune System Based Intruder Detection Algorithm For Comparison With A Novel Intruder Detection Strategy., Jaden Caradine
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
"This project aims to develop an Artificial Immune System inspired intruder detection system based on current state-of-the-art strategies. Traditional intruder detection systems are not equipped to handle the evolving landscape of cyber security. Signature based detection systems require a database of known signatures and traditional anomaly detection systems are plagued with false positives. By contrast, Artificial Immune Systems can respond to threats never encountered. They are adaptive, proactive, and resilient to interference. This makes them ideal for determining when a system is behaving abnormally. Researchers are developing a novel intruder detection system, but they need a baseline to compare it …
Data-Driven Metrics For Approach Stability Assessment In Flight Training Using Ads-B Data, Taeyun Yoo
Data-Driven Metrics For Approach Stability Assessment In Flight Training Using Ads-B Data, Taeyun Yoo
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Approach stability is a critical factor in ensuring safe flight operations, especially in-flight training environments characterized by varying pilot experience levels. Although flight data recorders (FDRs) offer comprehensive performance data for evaluating approach stability, these devices are typically absent from training aircraft. Consequently, assessments in flight training settings depend predominantly on instructor expertise and subjective evaluation, which restricts the potential for quantitative post-flight analysis. This study investigates the application of open-source Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) data to identify and evaluate approach stability within flight training operations. This research develops and tests a metric-based framework for classifying approach stability using publicly …
A Low-Complexity Generator Matrix-Influenced Algorithm To Globally Recover Algebraic Codes Over Finite Fields, Oshani Jayawardane
A Low-Complexity Generator Matrix-Influenced Algorithm To Globally Recover Algebraic Codes Over Finite Fields, Oshani Jayawardane
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Code Recovery using algebraic-geometric approaches becomes computationally expensive with the cardinality of the field and complex code structures. In response, we propose a low-complexity algorithm that utilizes structures in algebraic-geometric codes over finite fields. The low-complexity algorithm to locally recover algebraic codes over finite fields (i.e., 𝑙𝑟𝑐 algorithm) is defined based on a sparse matrix factorization that computes the inverse of an (r+1) x r generator matrix, whose elements are defined by the points on the surface in P³ over the finite field 𝔽q with locality r. We have shown that the (𝑙𝑟𝑐 algorithm) reduces the complexity from O(n³) to …
Emulating Camera Parameters For A Digital Twin Lunar Terrain Simulation, Samuil Nikolov
Emulating Camera Parameters For A Digital Twin Lunar Terrain Simulation, Samuil Nikolov
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Digital twin simulations play an integral role in the design, validation and implementation of a plethora of systems in any industry - including aerospace. EagleCam 2 presents a great technical challenge, where we need to evaluate how our systems will do data acquisition best - image capturing in particular. In order to assist with the design and validation of our systems, a digital twin that emulates the Lunar environment as we expect it to be during the lifecycle of the mission is a crucial component. Such digital twin system allows us to simulate all the parameters that are considered variable …

Paschen Curves Of Glow Discharges In Different Gas Compositions, Seth Gerow
Paschen Curves Of Glow Discharges In Different Gas Compositions, Seth Gerow
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Our work focuses on low current, low temperature plasma discharges: glow and corona. Townsend theory predicts that the critical voltage to initiate a gas breakdown (i.e., a "spark") between two parallel plate electrodes is dependent on the product of the pressure and distance; consequently, variations in either parameter which results in the same product, pd, do not affect the breakdown voltage. In this work, we present Paschen curves of narrow-to-wide electrode glow discharges in two gas mediums, argon and air. These curves show a deviation from theoretical predictions, such that changes in electrode configuration create a uniform shift of the …

I Don’T Remember: Measuring The Frequency And Impact Of Source Recall In Misinformation Correction, Emily K. Vraga, Leticia Bode
I Don’T Remember: Measuring The Frequency And Impact Of Source Recall In Misinformation Correction, Emily K. Vraga, Leticia Bode
Newhouse Impact Journal
It is broadly established that source cues matter for establishing information credibility (Pornpitakpan, 2004). Therefore, it is hardly surprising that when thinking about methods to address and correct misinformation, many scholars have pointed to the importance of source cues (Cook et al., 2017; Lewandowsky & van der Linden, 2021; Literat et al., 2021; Shen et al., 2019). But this research is plagued by inconsistent findings about which kinds of sources tend to be the most effective correctors (e.g., Berinsky, 2023; van der Meer & Jin, 2020; Vraga & Bode, 2017). We argue that research has not adequately accounted for recall …

Building Better Voters? Using Ai To Develop Civic Skills, Emily Sydnor
Newhouse Impact Journal
Generative AI offers an opportunity for people to build a variety of civic skills outside of the traditional K-12 education system. In this paper, I test an AI chatbot's ability to provide me with relevant candidate and procedural information in advance of the 2025 Virginia gubernatorial elections. While the experience was overwhelmingly positive and could easily be adapted for naturalized citizens or American adults moving from state to state or to a new locality, it also highlights concerns about the possibility of hallucinations and reinforcement of existing inequalities in politics and society.
