A Documentalist Critique Of Information Science, Michael K. Buckland Feb 2026

A Documentalist Critique Of Information Science, Michael K. Buckland

Proceedings from the Document Academy

The paper examines the claim that new developments in document theory, sometimes referred to as “neodocumentalism,” constitute a radical challenge to orthodox information science theory. Related terminology is clarified and the disparate language needs of information practice and information theory are identified. The use of metaphor and figurative language is beneficial for practice, but detrimental for theory development. Finally, two linear models of documentary activity (reading and writing; reception and expression) are shown to form a single unified model.

Igg4-Related Disease Associated With Pearson Syndrome: A Case Of Rapid Decline, Kai-Jing Zhang, Xiao-Juan Lv, Qin-Qin Zhao, Wan-Wan Xu

Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases

We report a diagnostically challenging case of a 1-year-old female with refractory thrombocytopenia, sideroblastic anemia, pancreatitis and metabolic decompensation, ultimately attributed to coexisting IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) and Pearson syndrome (PS)—a previously undocumented association. Key findings of the case were 1. Treatment resistant thrombocytopenia despite IVIG, corticosteroids, and eltrombopag (transient response only). 2. Elevated IgG4 (840 μg/mL) and pancreatitis thought to be secondary to IgG4-RD. 3. Mitochondrial DNA deletion (m.10052_15604 del, 93.2% heteroplasmy) and ringed sideroblasts secondary to PS. 4. Fatal Metabolic Crisis with hyperlactatemia (peak 8.4 mmol/L) and cardiac failure, underscoring PS's rapid progression. This is the first reported association …

Expression Of Metrnl, Presepsin, And Bmp9 In Peripheral Blood Of Children With Sepsis And Their Roles In Diagnosis And Prognosis, Yang Liu, Cheng Wei

Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases

Objective: Meteorin-like protein (METRNL), soluble CD14 subtype (presepsin), and bone morphogenetic protein 9 (BMP9) show promising for sepsis diagnosis and prognosis assessment in children. Their diagnostic and prognostic utility is comprehensively assessed in this study. Methods: A total of 360 children, aged 3-14 years, with sepsis, infection, and healthy groups were retrospectively analyzed. Receiver Operating Characteristic curve evaluated the diagnostic performance of METRNL, presepsin, and BMP9 for sepsis. The 28-day prognostic information was collected for the sepsis group. Risk factors for poor prognosis in the sepsis group were analyzed using logistic regression. A nomogram prediction model for prognostic prediction in …

Hemodynamic And Oximetric Response To Sodium Bicarbonate Boluses In Children With Single Ventricle Parallel Circulation: A Retrospective, Single-Center Study, Fabio Savorgnan, Saul Flores, Rohit S. Loomba, Sebastian Acosta

Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care

Introduction: To evaluate the hemodynamic and oximetric changes in patients with parallel circulation (Norwood, hybrid, and BT-shunted) after sodium bicarbonate bolus administration. Methods: Retrospective analysis of physiologic data. To eliminate confounders, sodium bicarbonate boluses concurrently administered with normal saline, 5% albumin, epinephrine boluses, blood transfusions, change in VIS or mechanical circulatory support were excluded. Blood pressure, arterial oxygen saturation, heart rate, cerebral and renal NIRS were continuously recorded from one-hour pre to one-hour post each intervention. Results: Out of 429 boluses, 293 boluses met the inclusion criteria. Measurements show an increase in blood pressure (p = 0.01) and heart rate …

Variability In Clinician Awareness Of Intravenous Fluid Administration In Critical Illness: A Prospective Cohort Study, Stephen M. Gorga, Alexander L. Sliwicki, Julie Sturza, Erin F. Carlton, Ryan P. Barbaro, Rajit K. Basu

Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care

Objective: Intravenous (IV) fluids are commonly administered to critically ill children, but clinicians lack effective guidance for the correct dose and duration of therapy resulting in variation of prescribing habits which harm children. It is unknown if clinicians recognize the amount of IV fluid that patients receive. We aimed to determine clinician accuracy in the identification of the volume of IV fluids patients will receive over the next 24 hours. Methods: Prospective cohort study enrolled all patients admitted to the PICU from May-August 2021 at the University of Michigan’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). For each …

Emergent Bedside Re-Sternotomy: An Innovative Simulation Model For Training Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Teams, Toluwani Akinpelu, Nikhil R. Shah, Mohammed Alhendy, Malarvizhi Thangavelu, Karen Weaver, Nicole Muller, James Mcelroy, Utpal S. Bhalala

Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care

Introduction: Cardiac tamponade after cardiac surgery is a life-threatening event that requires simultaneous resuscitation and emergent re-sternotomy by the intensive care team. A simulated scenario using an innovative mannequin with sternotomy wound has the capability of reproducing cardiac arrest associated with postoperative tamponade. We evaluated the validity of this mannequin to investigate the confidence level and crisis resource management skills of the team during bedside re-sternotomy to manage postoperative cardiac tamponade. Methods: The simulation scenario was developed using the sternotomy mannequin for a pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) team. The case involved a 3-year-old male, intubated, mechanically ventilated after …

Agent-Driven Integration Of Editorial Feedback And Redlining For Productivity Suites, John Lunney, Johannes Start Feb 2026

Agent-Driven Integration Of Editorial Feedback And Redlining For Productivity Suites, John Lunney, Johannes Start

Defensive Publications Series

Collaborative document review often involves a large volume of feedback, including suggested edits, requests for elaboration, and controversial comments. Manually addressing these items can be time-consuming and inefficient for the author, particularly when many comments are trivial or non-controversial. A multi-agent system is disclosed to automate the processing of editorial feedback and redlining. Comments are extracted from a document and classified by an agent. Each comment is assigned a proposed action, such as direct integration into the document, rejection, or elevation for human review. Changes made by the agents are recorded in an audit log. For items requiring manual intervention, …

Tamper-Evident Status Derivation From Cryptographic Execution Proof — Eliminating Mutable Status Fields, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Tamper-Evident Status Derivation From Cryptographic Execution Proof — Eliminating Mutable Status Fields, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for determining the derived committed status of sealed decision records by computing that status from the existence and verification of execution proofs rather than reading a stored mutable status value. In one embodiment, a sealed decision record is stored in a tamper- evident immutable record store without any mutable value indicating whether execution has occurred, and committed status is derived at the time of a status query by checking whether a valid execution proof exists in a separate proof store and passes multi-condition verification. The elimination of mutable status values structurally prevents status manipulation …

Data Provenance Verification For Multi-Stage Processing Pipelines — Chained Integrity Binding, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Data Provenance Verification For Multi-Stage Processing Pipelines — Chained Integrity Binding, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for constructing and verifying provenance chains that link verifiable commitments across the semantically distinct processing stages of a determination pipeline, providing data provenance verification for multi-stage processing pipelines. In one embodiment, a provenance chain is formed by producing a verifiable commitment at each processing stage, where each stage’s commitment incorporates the preceding stage’s commitment together with the current stage’s content, creating stage-to-stage binding that makes the chain tamper- evident. The resulting forward-only provenance chain ensures that stages cannot be reordered, removed, or inserted without producing a detectably different commitment at each subsequent stage. In …

Constrained Bearer Credentials For Decision-Gated Process Authorization, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Constrained Bearer Credentials For Decision-Gated Process Authorization, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for purpose-limited, scope-bound execution permits that constrain process authorization to the specific parameters approved by an originating decision. In one embodiment, an execution permit is derived from a sealed decision record and carries a parameter binding digest computed over a deterministic encoding of the approved action parameters, such that any modification to the parameters renders the permit invalid. The execution permit is scope-bound: it is valid only within the specific organizational context under which the originating decision was evaluated, and the execution environment independently determines context values rather than inheriting them from the permit. …

Privilege Separation Architecture — Structural Confinement Of Analysis Components In Decision Systems, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Privilege Separation Architecture — Structural Confinement Of Analysis Components In Decision Systems, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for structurally separating components that analyse and propose from components that produce external effects within computational decision infrastructure. In one embodiment, a computational system enforces a structural separation between a determination-side partition (the analysis partition) and an effect-side partition (the execution partition) through its construction — such that no component in the analysis partition can directly invoke operations that produce external effects, regardless of that component’s credentials, permissions, or compromise status. The structural isolation is enforced by system architecture rather than by runtime policy or administrative configuration. In one embodiment, the separation applies with …

Capability-Based Authorization For Compromised Component Containment — Decision-Derived Not Identity, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Capability-Based Authorization For Compromised Component Containment — Decision-Derived Not Identity, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems in which the right to perform an action — an action entitlement — originates from a validated decision outcome rather than from any property of the party presenting the request. In one embodiment, when a decision outcome establishes that a particular action with particular values is warranted, an action entitlement is derived whose scope is determined entirely by what was decided, excluding all identity-derived factors from the entitlement scope. This decision-derived authorization model inverts the identity-based authorization baseline: instead of asking “who is requesting this?” and matching the answer against permissions, the system asks …

Configuration Change Validation — Type-State Gated Approval With Structural Bypass Prevention, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Configuration Change Validation — Type-State Gated Approval With Structural Bypass Prevention, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for governing the introduction of infrastructure artifacts into decision infrastructure through a governed configuration change validation pipeline. In one embodiment, any proposer — regardless of origin — submits content that is stored with a structural type distinguishing it from a sealed decision record. The submitted content undergoes deterministic policy evaluation containing no probabilistic components, no learning elements, and no runtime inference, ensuring that identical inputs always produce identical outputs. In one embodiment, structural bypass prevention ensures that no path exists from proposer output to sealed decision record that bypasses deterministic validation — the enforcement …

Automated Policy-To-Code Translation — Ai-Driven Governance Artifact Construction From Policy Documents, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Automated Policy-To-Code Translation — Ai-Driven Governance Artifact Construction From Policy Documents, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for AI-driven governance artifact construction within decision infrastructure systems. The disclosed methods relate to the field of automated policy-to-code translation, where techniques from obligation extraction and model-driven engineering transform unstructured policy documents into formal governance specifications. In one embodiment, an AI constructor analyses source material — including policy documents, regulatory standards, and process descriptions — and proposes governance artifacts that declare structural and governance requirements for organisational decisions. The AI constructor performs automated decision specification authoring by translating natural language source material into formal governance specifications, proposed context configurations identifying contextual dimensions along which …

Admission Control For Runtime Process Extension — Structural Validation, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Admission Control For Runtime Process Extension — Structural Validation, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for validated runtime extension of executing multi-step processes with structural safety guarantees. In one embodiment, when a proposed extension comprising additional process steps and their dependencies is submitted for incorporation into an executing process, the system evaluates the proposed extension against a set of structural validation predicates before any modification to the executing process is permitted. The structural validation predicates are deterministic checks that verify structural integrity properties of the proposed extension relative to the current process structure, including termination verification (confirming that the extended structure preserves finite completion), data flow compatibility checking (confirming …

Policy Gap Detection And Graduated Enforcement In Scope- Based Governance Systems, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Policy Gap Detection And Graduated Enforcement In Scope- Based Governance Systems, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for governed response to scope novelty in scope-based governance systems. When a governance system encounters a scope position for which no governance configuration exists — a cold start governance scenario where novel scope positions are detected through policy gap detection via configuration coverage gap analysis — the system provides graduated enforcement rather than defaulting to either ungoverned pass-through or blanket refusal. In one embodiment, scope novelty is detected as a structural signal: a configuration coverage check reveals that required contextual dimensions at a scope position are not covered by governance rules, identifying the position …

Case-Based Reasoning Post-Retrieval Classification — Immutable Reuse Mode Assignment, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Case-Based Reasoning Post-Retrieval Classification — Immutable Reuse Mode Assignment, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for classifying prior sealed decision records into a plurality of reuse classifications based on structural relationships between contextual positions, where each reuse classification imposes different mode- specific requirements and produces categorically different downstream effects that are sealed at classification time. In one embodiment, a post-retrieval classification process evaluates a candidate sealed decision record relative to a current decision context and selects one reuse classification from among a plurality of reuse classifications. Examples of possible reuse classifications include, but are not limited to, substitutive reuse where the prior record directly satisfies the current request, advisory …

Snapshot Isolation For Policy Evaluation — Temporal Consistency Across Multi-Step Processes, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Snapshot Isolation For Policy Evaluation — Temporal Consistency Across Multi-Step Processes, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for ensuring temporal consistency across multi-step decision processes that evaluate organisational decisions against rules and policies drawn from multiple independent sources. In one embodiment, a temporal reference is captured at the initiation of a decision process and carried through all subsequent evaluation steps, ensuring that every step observes the policy environment as it existed at a consistent policy snapshot. Temporal markers obtained from policy sources are treated as opaque — their internal structure is not interpreted by the decision system — and freshness comparison determines whether one marker represents a state at least as …

Context-Dependent Process Adaptation — Invariant Specification With Scope-Driven Behavioural Divergence, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Context-Dependent Process Adaptation — Invariant Specification With Scope-Driven Behavioural Divergence, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for context-dependent process behaviour exhibiting scope-driven behavioural divergence in which a single invariant specification produces structurally different behaviour at different scope positions. In one embodiment, a specification defining a structured decomposition of reasoning steps is received together with a scope position comprising context parameters, and for each reasoning step, operational parameters are derived from a scope-driven configuration based on the scope position rather than from the specification itself. The specification declares what to evaluate; the scope position determines how evaluation proceeds. In one embodiment, scope-dependent decision evaluation operates through multiple independent dimensions of divergence: …

Schema Mapping — Fidelity-Tracked Transformation Between Independent Semantic Environments, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Schema Mapping — Fidelity-Tracked Transformation Between Independent Semantic Environments, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for defining and applying explicit transformation declarations between independently maintained meaning environments, where each meaning environment governs locally-defined terms, type structures, and interpretation rules for a particular decision context. In one embodiment, a transformation declaration specifies mapping correspondences between meaning entries in a source meaning environment and meaning entries in a target meaning environment, and carries an information preservation classification indicating the nature and degree of information preservation achieved by the transformation. In one embodiment, transformation declarations may be composed sequentially to form transformation chains spanning multiple meaning environments, where the composed preservation classification …

Federated Ontology Management For Polysemous Terms — Context-Dependent Vocabulary Binding, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Federated Ontology Management For Polysemous Terms — Context-Dependent Vocabulary Binding, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for associating context-dependent meaning definitions with terms used in decision evaluation, where the meaning of a given term varies depending on the decision context in which it is evaluated. In one embodiment, a decision evaluation system manages terms through a controlled vocabulary definition in which each governed term identifier maintains a single managed identity across all decision contexts — for purposes of lifecycle management, alternative name resolution, and administrative tracking — while the interpretation rules, typing constraints, and validation logic associated with that term differ depending on which decision context references it. In one …
