Reliable Eigenspace Error Estimation Using Source Error Estimators, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Gabriel Pinochet-Soto
Reliable Eigenspace Error Estimation Using Source Error Estimators, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Gabriel Pinochet-Soto
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We introduce a framework for repurposing error estimators for source problems to compute an estimator for the gap between eigenspaces and their discretizations. Of interest are eigenspaces of finite clusters of eigenvalues of unbounded nonselfadjoint linear operators with compact resolvent. Eigenspaces and eigenvalues of rational functions of such operators are studied as a first step. Under an assumption of convergence of resolvent approximations in the operator norm and an assumption on global reliability of source problem error estimators, we show that the gap in eigenspace approximations can be bounded by a globally reliable and computable error estimator. Also included are …

Background/Objectives: Understanding how motor and cognitive development may contribute to prosocial behavior is essential for supporting whole-child development in early learning settings. Early childhood education settings are well-positioned to address these concerns through integrated approaches that support the whole child. Research exploring the mechanisms that link developmental domains remains limited, especially regarding how motor development may influence social outcomes through cognitive processes such as inhibitory control. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine whether gains in motor skills were associated with prosocial behaviors indirectly through improvements in inhibitory control. Methods: Preschoolers (N = 238; Mage = 66.61, SD …

The appearance of diabetes-associated autoantibodies is the first detectable sign of the disease process leading to type 1 diabetes (T1D). Evidence suggests that T1D is a heterogenous disease, where the type of antibodies first formed implies subtypes. Here, we leverage longitudinal samples collected from 98 European TRIGR participants (49 children who subsequently presented with T1D, and 49 matched controls), and profile single-cell epigenomics at different time points of disease development. Quantitation of cell and nuclei populations, complemented by analysis of transcriptome and open-chromatin states, indicates robust, early, replicable monocyte lineage differences between cases and controls, suggesting the early emergence of …
Staff Education On Phq-9 To Improve Depression Screening And Patient Outcomes, Ahmad Ghandour
Staff Education On Phq-9 To Improve Depression Screening And Patient Outcomes, Ahmad Ghandour
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Depression is a prevalent mental health condition that significantly affects patient quality of life and healthcare utilization. Clinical guidelines recommend routine depression screening in adults when appropriate systems for follow-up and treatment are in place. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) is a validated instrument used to identify depressive symptoms and assess severity in outpatient settings. Despite national recommendations supporting routine depression screening using the PHQ-9, a significant practice gap remains in the consistent administration, accurate scoring, and proper documentation of the tool in outpatient. Research indicated that variability in screening practices is frequently associated with inadequate staff training and lack …

Estimating goat body weight from morphometric traits is essential for growth monitoring, health management, and welfare. Accurate weight informs nutrition, clinical interventions, and mating decisions. In this study, the MARS and XGBoost algorithms were used to estimate the live weight of Kalahari Red goats based on body measurements. A dataset containing body length (BL), birth type (single, twin, or triplet), withers height (WH), rump height (RH), and heart girth (HG) information for 200 goats was used in the training and testing of the models. The performances of the models were evaluated with the goodness-of-fit criteria. XGBoost showed a performance of …

Comparative Computational Study Of Sulfur-Donor Additives For Stabilization Of Fapbi3 Perovskites, Ilnar Nurgaliev, Akbarxon Hamzayev, Murad Marasulov, Zavkiddin Julliev, Akhmad Oblakulov, Nigmat Ashurov
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A multiscale computational investigation integrating density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations was conducted to elucidate the mechanisms through which sulfur-containing donor molecules stabilize the photoactive α-phase of formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) perovskites. The binding energetics, charge-transfer behavior, and hydrogen-bonding interactions of thiourea (TU), thiosemicarbazide (TSC), thiocyanate (SCN–), and diethyldithiocarbamate (DTC) were systematically analyzed. DFT results revealed pronounced Pb–S coordination and multidentate hydrogenbonding, with binding energies following the trend SCN–>TSC>DTC>TU. Thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that these additives lower the Gibbs free energy difference, thereby stabilizing the black α-phase, with TSC, TU, and to a lesser extent …

t ’ s I n o w b een more than a year since President Trump’s dismantling of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), which led to the closure of its Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) Program. In place for decades, the DHS Program produced and shared, free of charge, some of the highest-quality data on population health in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Our own analysis found at least 9,000 published studies, reports, and book chapters based on more than 400 DHS surveys in almost 100 countries (Fig. 1).* And the DHS has been instrumental in improving the …

Exploring Music Representation Learning For Detection Of Finer-Grained Details, Vishnu Pendyala, Samhita Konduri, Kriti Pendyala
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The foundational tonic in Indian classical music presents a crucial element for algorithmic understanding. This research investigates the efficacy of modern machine learning techniques for detecting this fine-grained musical attribute from diverse audio representations. Addressing limitations in prior work that used spe-cialized techniques, this study pioneers the integration of audio representations with non-linear dimensionality reduction and machine learning classifiers for tonic classification. The methodology employs various machine learning algorithms on music represented by audio features such as Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients and Mel spectrograms. Spectral analysis using Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP) offers novel insights into music representation learning. The …
The Regulatory Framework For Crowdsourced Online Dispute Resolution: Revisiting The Dispute Resolution Triangle, Yun Zhao, Zhiming Xiao
The Regulatory Framework For Crowdsourced Online Dispute Resolution: Revisiting The Dispute Resolution Triangle, Yun Zhao, Zhiming Xiao
Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal
Crowdsourced Online Dispute Resolution (CODR) constitutes a transformative approach to digital-era disputes, fundamentally reconceptualizing dispute resolution through distributed participant networks rather than merely digitizing traditional alternative dispute resolution. Anchored in Katsh and Rifkin’s dispute resolution triangle (trust, convenience, expertise) and Perritt’s co-regulatory governance model, this paper analyzes CODR’s evolution from early systems such as iCourthouse to contemporary implementations. Case studies of eBay Community Court (contractual self-regulation prioritizing convenience) and Xianyu Small Court (state-aligned hybrid governance optimizing expertise through algorithmic juror specialization) demonstrate how platforms operationalize these theoretical frameworks. The legal analysis examines jurisdictional fragmentation and enforcement challenges, revealing how regulatory …

Review Of Scattered And Fugitive Things: How Black Collectors Created Archives And Remade History, Kai H. Uchida
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
In Scattered and Fugitive Things: How Black Collectors Created Archives and Remade History, historian and archivist Laura E. Helton tells the story of six individuals – Arturo Schomburg, Alexander Gumby, Virginia Lee, Dorothy Porter, Vivian Harsh, and Lawrence Reddick – whose practices of radical collecting revalued and recast the importance of Black history. Helton combines innovative methodological readings of previously undervalued archival sources with a keen understanding of archival practice to illuminate Black archives as a site of radical collecting, intellectual inquiry, and community empowerment. Compellingly written with insights about the theory of their curation and the story of …
