Manufacturing systems are complex installations designed and developed by stakeholders with differing expertise. However, system design primarily features traditional methods, long lead times, and siloed environments, which obstruct comprehension, communication, or collaboration. Prior research has used extended reality (XR) to prototype and visualise specific manufacturing applications; however, flexible system modelling remains complex. To address these issues and lay the foundation for future-facing manufacturing design as part of Industry 4.0, we introduce ARTIFY—a prototype XR framework for conceptual system prototyping. It features abstract building blocks that can be semantically reconfigured to support early-stage modelling of varied manufacturing systems in immersive environments. …

Do Attorneys Discriminate? Understanding The Implications Of Bias On Voir Dire & Jury Selection, Jessica Lambert
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Biases, generally defined as predispositions or inclinations for or against ideas, is a broadly prevalent aspect of human cognition and decision-making (Steinhauser, 2020). Bias is present in every decision-making structure, even those in which we strive for the greatest neutrality, such as the legal system (Alter, 2010). An especially important place to seek to minimize or eliminate bias is in the courtroom. Our justice system is built upon the assumption of impartiality and nonpartisanship (Rosenberg, 2008), yet biases and stereotypical decision- making are common criticisms of the court (Curley et al., 2022; Chopp, 2017). This study attempts to identify the …

Co-Electrospinning Polyacrylonitrile (Pan) / Polymer Of Intrinsic Microporosity-1 (Pim-1) For Electrochemical-Based Sensor For Pyridine Detection And Absorption, Samar A. Salim
Nanotechnology Research Centre
The electrospinning of the polymer of intrinsic microporosity-1 (PIM-1) poses challenges due to its limited solubility and tendency to form bead-like structures at high concentrations. This work details the synthesis and analysis of electrospun composite fibers made from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and PIM-1 for electrochemical applications. The data analysis confirmed the successful incorporation of PIM-1 into the PAN matrix. The fiber characteristics were significantly influenced by PIM-1 loading (1–10%), resulting in fiber diameters ranging from 0.8 to 1.7 μm. A 10% concentration of PIM-1 results in the formation of macropores with diameters ranging from 0.5 to 1.7 μm. Optical analysis using …

The Trump Administration’S Theory Of Constitutional War Powers: “The President Could Decide”, Rebecca Ingber

President Donald Trump has launched another unlawful war, this time in the service of regime change in Iran. The administration has been threatening the use of force for weeks, but provided very little public justification, description of what the president hoped to accomplish, or explanation for how the use of force would effectuate such goals. It has also to date presented no legal justification whatsoever. Much of what we know at this moment about how the administration views, and how it lawyers, questions of war powers can be derived from the one legal memorandum the administration has released on the …

Benevolence And Brutality: Evangelical Christianity & Child Welfare Social Work In Historical Perspective, Grace Pappas
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Evangelical Christians in the U.S. are a unique population with tremendous socio-political influence. While evangelicals have a unique interest in foster care and adoption, little social work scholarship explores intersections between evangelicalism and child welfare. Through an integrative literature review of 11 historical articles discussing evangelical Christianity and child welfare social work, I found the scholarship as a whole tended to emphasize evangelical Christians’ good intentions and deeds, while only limitedly discussing white supremacy, xenophobia, and settler colonialism. In light of these findings, I discuss potential implications and offer three invitations for further exploring this line of inquiry.

Hybrid Cnn–Gru-Based Demand–Supply Forecasting To Enhance Sustainability In Renewable-Integrated Smart Grids, Süleyman Emre Eyimaya, Necmi Altin
Faculty Publications
The rapid integration of renewable energy sources in smart grids has introduced significant uncertainty in both power generation and consumption patterns, posing challenges to environmental, economic, and operational sustainability. Accurate short-term forecasting of energy demand and supply is essential for achieving optimal scheduling, grid stability, and resilient operation in renewable-integrated power systems. This study proposes a hybrid deep learning framework combining Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Gated Recurrent Units (GRU) for intelligent joint demand–supply forecasting in smart grids. The model was developed and implemented in MATLAB using real-world datasets comprising electricity consumption, photovoltaic (PV) generation, temperature, and irradiance variables. Comparative …

INTRODUCTION: Cancer treatment decision making (CTDM) presents important challenges among older adults due to variation in health and functional status, presence of comorbidities, differing goals/values, quality and quantity of life considerations, and limited inclusion in clinical trials. Nursing standards and guidelines call for competence in supporting CTDM and nurses advocate for greater involvement. However, clear understanding of the existing evidence to inform nursing practice is lacking. We aimed to map and synthesize evidence that provides insight into nursing practice in CTDM among older adults, with attention to nursing roles, required skills and competencies, potential barriers and facilitators, and outcomes studied. …

The Development Of Ace-Iii Performance Validity Tests For Dementia Screening, Donnchadh Murphy, Rupert Noad
Peninsula Medical School
Objective: Performance validity tests (PVTs) are an essential component of a neuropsychological evaluation. There is a lack of brief validated PVTs for use alongside cognitive screening assessments for dementia. The current study sought to develop and evaluate a series of brief PVTs, which could be embedded into the Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination (ACE-III) and used in a dementia clinic. Method: This study used a diagnostic accuracy design to compare the performance of 31 individuals with Alzheimer’s disease dementia and 26 healthy older adults who simulated having Alzheimer’s disease. Participants were asked to complete ACE-III, the Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM), and …

Does Demographic Aging And Financial Globalization Moderate Crowding Out? Federal Deficits And U.S. Long-Term Real Interest Rates., Tyson C. Test
Honors Thesis
This thesis examines how U.S. federal budget deficits and demographic aging relate to long-term U.S. real interest rates, and how global financial conditions shape that relationship over time. Using annual data from 1960 to 2023, I construct real 10-year Treasury rates by subtracting CPI inflation from 10-year Treasury yields, measure fiscal deficits as a share of GDP, and measure demographic aging with the old-age dependency ratio. I estimate OLS regressions with an interaction term between deficits and aging to test whether the association between deficits and real rates varies with demographic structure. To account for structural differences in the U.S. …

Lipid bilayers form the basis of organellar architecture, structure, and compartmentalization in the cell. Decades of biophysical, biochemical, and imaging studies on purified or in vitro-reconstituted liposomes have shown that variations in lipid composition influence the physical properties of membranes, such as thickness and curvature. However, similar studies characterizing these membrane properties within the native cellular context have remained technically challenging. Recent advancements in cellular cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) imaging enable high-resolution, three-dimensional views of native organellar membrane architecture preserved in near-native conditions. We previously developed a "Surface Morphometrics" pipeline that generates surface mesh reconstructions to model and quantify cellular membrane …

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
The paper analyzes the theology, emotions, and community formation of the bots who post on YouTube and the people who respond to them. The paper finds that the bots’ theology is evangelical, charismatic, and prosperity-oriented. The paper also finds that the people who respond to the bots are sincere, supportive, and expressive, and that they create a virtual community of faith that is joyful, hopeful, and trusting. The paper suggests that virtual gatherings of Christians need more scholarly attention and that more research is needed on the emotional formation and theological implications of these online interactions.

Esophageal cancer incidence is rising globally, with at least 500,000 new cases diagnosed annually. Management options for non-metastatic disease include primary resection, neoadjuvant or perioperative therapies, or definitive non-surgical treatment, with the choice being guided by tumor staging, histology, patient fitness, and available resources. However, even with the use of advanced diagnostic modalities, preoperative clinical staging is challenging with respect to accuracy of both tumor and nodal assessment. Early-stage esophageal cancer may be managed with local therapies, such as endoscopic mucosal resection or submucosal dissection, while for more advanced tumors managed with curative intent neoadjuvant oncologic therapy is commonly recommended. …

Recovering water, nutrients, energy, and critical materials from waste streams is essential for building resilient and circular water systems. Yet many recovery technologies fail to achieve adoption or persistence beyond pilot scales because they overlook the social and institutional contexts that shape implementation. This Perspective reframes resource recovery as an adaptive challenge, i.e., one that depends as much on governance capacity, trust, and collective learning as on technical optimization. We propose a watershed- and place-based framework that situates recovery systems within the ecological and institutional boundaries where communities, infrastructure, and governance intersect. Within this discussion, the Community Capitals Framework offers …

In this nonpayment proceeding involving a rent-stabilized apartment, court grants landlord's motion to reargue and adheres to its prior decision ordering discovery. Though landlord's motion was filed more than 30 days after service of the notice of entry, court exercises discretion to hear it, finding no prejudice to tenant. On the merits, court upholds its prior discovery order requiring landlord to produce rent registration history, citing unexplained increases — including a jump from $559.07 to $1,300 attributed only to a vacancy lease — and a longevity increase lacking documentation.

Precision Measurement Of A Resistance Standard At Frequencies Up To 2 Mhz, Jurgen Schurr, Shakil A. Awan
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
We report on two-terminal-pair and four-terminal-pair (4TP) measurements of a 10 kΩ resistance standard by means of a commercial precision inductance-capacitance-resistance meter (LCR meter) at frequencies up to 2 MHz. We discuss the effect of cables on a resistance standard measured in either two- or 4TP configuration and demonstrate within which uncertainty the effect of 2.5 m long measuring cables can be corrected accurately. Such long cables are inevitable for precision measurements of the quantum Hall resistance (QHR) at high frequencies. Furthermore, the systematic effects of the LCR meter, such as the internal input capacitances, voltage and frequency dependences, and …

Handgrip strength is a proxy for muscular fitness, an indicator for general health status, and is associated with cardiometabolic health. The mechanisms connecting handgrip strength to skeletal muscle function are incompletely understood. We applied integrated linkage-disequilibrium-adjusted colocalization analysis of genome-wide association study summary statistics for handgrip strength, combined with expression and splicing quantitative trait loci from skeletal muscle, and identified glycogen branching enzyme 1 (GBE1) as a candidate gene for handgrip strength. CRISPR-interference knockdown of GBE1 in immortalized human skeletal muscle cells (HMCL-7304) demonstrated decreased glycogen content and accumulation of polyglucosan bodies. Knockdown of GBE1 led to increased oxygen consumption …

The immune system is not only essential for host defense, but it is also involved in tissue maintenance and disease pathogenesis. Macrophages play a key role in tissue repair, fibrosis, and tumorigenesis, but the mechanisms underlying their multifunctionality have not been fully explored. Here, we identified Mrep (Ly6ChiCX3CR1loPDPN+CD9+) as a crucial subset of macrophages for muscle regeneration after muscle injury. Muscle regeneration required Mrep-derived activin A, which was produced via the TLR4/TIR domain-containing adapter-inducing interferon-β/TANK-binding kinase 1/interferon regulatory factor 3/7 signaling pathway in response to muscle injury. Mrep exerted pathological effects by secreting activin A in a model of genetically …

The effect of a potentiating drug on ion channel function is typically evaluated by comparing current responses to the control agonist in the presence and absence of the potentiator. Differences in ratios of responses are then taken as proof of distinct potentiation properties when comparing modulation by different compounds. In these experiments, the concentration of the agonist is typically kept low to generate a small fractional control response. The precise relative magnitude of the control response is, however, not standardized among labs and can range from a concentration producing a response equal to just 2% of maximal (EC2) to over …

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex and poorly understood neurodegenerative disorder that lacks sufficiently effective treatments. Computational and integrative analyses that leverage multiomic data provide a promising strategy to uncover disease mechanisms and identify therapeutic opportunities. Here, we develop a cell type-specific regulatory atlas of the human middle temporal gyrus via leveraging single-nucleus RNA-seq (1,197,032 nuclei) and ATAC-seq (740,875 nuclei) data sets from 84 donors across four stages of AD neuropathological change (ADNC). We observe differential gene expression for six major cell types intensified at severe ADNC. Integrating peak-to-gene linkages and motif enrichment analyses, we reconstruct transcription factor (TF)-target gene …

The Modern History Of The Basel Problem, John Campbell, Paul Levrie
Euleriana
The \emph{Basel problem} refers to the problem of determining a closed form for the infinite series $\frac{1}{1^2} + \frac{1}{2^2} + \cdots$. If we consider what mathematical results have the most peer-reviewed papers devoted to new ways of proving such results, Euler's formula $\frac{1}{1^2} + \frac{1}{2^2} + \cdots = \frac{\pi^2}{6}$ is certainly among the top of such results. This motivates our historical study of peer-reviewed papers based on proofs of Euler's formula, and we introduce what appears to be the most comprehensive and up-to-date and exhaustive catalogue of peer-reviewed, published papers in the 20th and 21st centuries devoted to or mainly …

The Extent To Which The Earth's Motion Is Perturbed By The Moon, More Accurately Investigated: An English Translation Of E139, Patrick T. Headley
Euleriana
In Tabulae astronomicae solis et lunae (Solar and lunar astronomical tables) (E87), published in 1746, Euler made a first attempt to correct his astronomical tables for the gravitational attraction of the Earth toward the Moon, simply by accounting for the difference between the position of the Earth and the center of gravity of the Earth-Moon system. In this article Euler revisited the problem, noting that this center of gravity would not itself take an elliptical path around the Sun. To model the motion more accurately, Euler considered the separate gravitational attractions of the Sun and Moon acting on the Earth. …

About Infinite Algebraic Curves Whose Indefinite Lengths Equal An Elliptic Arc: An English Translation Of E780, Derek R. Aoki
Euleriana
Euler continues his study of algebraic curves with equal arc length, a subject to which he returned several times. After a brief review, he introduces an infinite family of curves with the same indefinite length as a given ellipse. However, this first family is by his own admission poorly motivated, so he derives directly a different but related family of curves with the same indefinite length as a given ellipse.
