Asarco Delenda Est, John M. Greabe Mar 2026

Asarco Delenda Est, John M. Greabe

Law Faculty Scholarship

ASARCO Inc. v. Kadish is the most important Supreme Court decision addressing the adjudication in state courts of federal claims that Article III’s case-or-controversy requirements would bar lower federal courts from hearing. But there are two serious problems with the reasoning of ASARCO: one involving an error of omission and the other an error of commission. ASARCO’s error of omission is its apparent assumption that a party barred from asserting a federal claim in federal court because of a lack of redressable Article III injury caused by the conduct complained of should face no barriers to obtaining relief on the …

Exploring The Perceptions Of Religious Trauma Among Former Members Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints Who Identify As A Sexual Minority, Samuel Clemens Mar 2026

Exploring The Perceptions Of Religious Trauma Among Former Members Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints Who Identify As A Sexual Minority, Samuel Clemens

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This qualitative study explored the perceived experiences of religious trauma among formerly active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) who identify as sexual minorities. Religious trauma, characterized by psychological, emotional, and social harm, arises from interactions with religious institutions and teachings. For sexual minorities within the LDS Church, strict adherence to heteronormative principles and rigid gender roles often results in identity suppression, emotional distress, and social isolation. Utilizing a generic qualitative inquiry approach, this study investigated how participants interpret their experiences of religious trauma and its perceived effects on their lives. Twelve participants aged 20–74 …

Effects Of Fib-Based Sample Preparation On Semiconductor Strain Characterization, Daniel Carl Hedinger Mar 2026

Effects Of Fib-Based Sample Preparation On Semiconductor Strain Characterization, Daniel Carl Hedinger

Dissertations and Theses

Channel strain engineering has been an important topic in semiconductor manufacturing due to the significant carrier mobility gains it can provide. The need for strain characterization at the individual device level, combined with the rapidly shrinking size of semiconductor devices, has led to development of various transmission electron microscopy (TEM) based strain characterization methods including nano beam electron diffraction (NBD). These methods rely on focused ion beam (FIB) sample preparation to produce election transparent TEM samples. This dissertation studies the effect of different FIB sample preparation modalities on the measured strain in p-type 14nm FinFET devices. TEM samples were produced …

Is Male Infertility An Early Warning Of More Serious Diseases?, Dolores J. Lamb Mar 2026

Is Male Infertility An Early Warning Of More Serious Diseases?, Dolores J. Lamb

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

About 12% of couples worldwide are infertile. Male factor infertility causes or is contributory to a couple's ability to conceive in approximately 50% of cases. Evidence has emerged that infertile men have poor overall health and increased morbidity and mortality, yet the causes for this are poorly understood. Although these men may appear healthy, research shows that they can harbor a wide variety of systemic diseases and illnesses that may share common links with the causes of their infertility. In fact, as semen parameters decline, their risks of several health conditions increase. In the early 1990s to the present, studies …

Multimodal Thermal And Mechanical Characterization Of Cryopreservation Effects In Biological Cells, Subhrajyoti Sourav Kumar Kundu Mar 2026

Multimodal Thermal And Mechanical Characterization Of Cryopreservation Effects In Biological Cells, Subhrajyoti Sourav Kumar Kundu

LSU Master's Theses

Cryopreservation is critical for long-term storage of cells, tissues, organs, and reproductive cells in medicine, biotechnology, and conservation. However, its success is limited by ice formation and cryoinjury, prompting extensive research into analytical tools for understanding and improving cryopreservation outcomes. We outline the principles of each technique and how they are used to detect key thermal and physical events such as ice nucleation, vitrification, devitrification, and cryoinjury. DSC enables quantitative thermal characterization including critical cooling/warming rates (ranging from 1-200°C/min for various systems) and glass transition temperatures. Cryomicroscopy provides direct real time visualization of ice crystal dynamics, distinguishing intracellular versus extracellular …

Methane Emissions From Underground Coal Mines, Marcelo Guzman, Thomas Parris, Stephen Greb, Cortland F. Eble, Sean Bailey

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Methane emissions from Kentucky underground coal mines were measured using near-infrared spectrometers deployed on a vehicle, an airplane, and a small uncrewed aerial system (sUAS), offering insights into the effectiveness of these methods under real-world conditions. From 2021–2022, surveys covered 14 active, 4 inactive, and 4 abandoned mines across Kentucky’s coal-producing basins. Vehicle-based surveys at 13 active mines detected methane anomalies at 9 sites with anomaly lengths spanning tens to hundreds of meters and peak emissions of 665 ± 229 kg h–1 from two Cardinal mine fans. Airborne GHGSat surveys identified anomalies at 3 sites, including a peak of 1062 …

Sigrescuer: A Pan-System Framework For Noise Correction And Mutational Signature Identification Across Sequencing Platforms, Peter T. Nguyen, Maria Zhivagui Mar 2026

Sigrescuer: A Pan-System Framework For Noise Correction And Mutational Signature Identification Across Sequencing Platforms, Peter T. Nguyen, Maria Zhivagui

Nevada Institute of Personalized Medicine Faculty Research

Introduction: Mutational signatures serve as molecular fingerprints of the biological processes and exposures that shape cancer genomes. However, accurate signal recovery remains challenging due to pervasive background variants, sequencing artifacts, technical noise, and platform-specific biases that obscure true mutagenic patterns, hampering biomarker discovery, and mechanistic interpretation. Methods: Here we introduce SigRescueR, a rigorous, pan-system, computational framework based on Bayesian inference designed for noise correction and mutational signature identification. SigRescueR applies statistically robust baseline correction to effectively disentangle true mutational signals from confounding noise and artifacts. Results: When applied to extensive datasets spanning experimental models and human cancers, SigRescueR reliably identified …

Negotiating Fatherhood: Young Men’S Narratives Of Care, Responsibility, And Struggle In A Low-Income South African Setting, Urlridge A. Thompson Dr, Tshepang Headman Mr, Leballo Tjemolane Mr, Lukhanyo H. Nyati Dr

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Financial provision continues to factor significantly in how Black men perceive and enact fatherhood, influencing the extent and manner of their paternal engagement. The enduring representation of men primarily as financial providers constrains the generation and enactment of alternative modalities of fatherhood within families and society. This qualitative study explored how the everyday lived experiences of young Black men in Soweto, South Africa, influence their varied engagements with fatherhood as they navigate structural constraints to pursuing their ideal of fatherhood. An exploratory descriptive qualitative approach was employed. We conducted two sets of semi-structured interviews with 19 young Black men in …

“I Know He Would Do Anything If I Asked”: To All The Boys I’Ve Loved Before, Female Power Fantasy, And The Ya Romance, Ilse Eskelsen Mar 2026

“I Know He Would Do Anything If I Asked”: To All The Boys I’Ve Loved Before, Female Power Fantasy, And The Ya Romance, Ilse Eskelsen

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The female power fantasy in which a powerless woman conquers a powerful man, thereby symbolically winning his status within the patriarchy for herself, is a classic feature of adult romance. It is visible, too, in YA romances like Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Sitting in tension with this inheritance from adult romance is the fact that YA is generally expected to be pedagogical, teaching young readers how to live and love well. In blending pedagogy with power fantasy and its associated escapism, To All the Boys essentially upcycles the tropes of adult romance for young …

Imitating Us Doctrine Cost Europe Its Heavy Combat Power, Bence Nemeth Mar 2026

Imitating Us Doctrine Cost Europe Its Heavy Combat Power, Bence Nemeth

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

This article argues that Europe’s loss of heavy combat power is primarily the result of doctrinal shifts influenced by the United States, rather than underfunding alone. Unlike existing research that focuses on defense budgets or burden-sharing, this study isolates the opportunity costs of adopting US-based expeditionary and counterinsurgency doctrines. Using force structure data for Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom (1990–2022), it conducts a counterfactual analysis of lost tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and heavy artillery pieces. The article shows that Europe’s shortfalls are doctrinal as much as fiscal and highlights the relevance of maintaining balance in future doctrinal choices.

Building A Better Landscape For Research Dissemination, Scott Horowitz Mar 2026

Building A Better Landscape For Research Dissemination, Scott Horowitz

Chemistry and Biochemistry: Faculty Scholarship

Let’s take a moment to think about where we’ve come to in scientific publishing. Once upon a time, journals and their publishers played an absolutely critical role in science’s growth and successes.  Many journal publishers are for-profit enterprises, and they still want to make profits even if they no longer serve an important purpose. By controlling the information, they can still force people to pay for services that are obsolete and manipulate the system in ways that stymie progress to maintain their market. Open access did not have the power to change this. Altogether, things are in bad shape. I …

Awareness Of Native American Living Conditions Among Athletic Trainers, Laurel Trail, Brandon Warner, Rebecca Peebles, Robert French, Lynzi Warner, S. Andrew Cage Mar 2026

Awareness Of Native American Living Conditions Among Athletic Trainers, Laurel Trail, Brandon Warner, Rebecca Peebles, Robert French, Lynzi Warner, S. Andrew Cage

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Context: Native Americans and First Nations People have dealt with healthcare disparities that have been documented in previous studies. One factor that appears to have played a role in these disparities was the Indian Removal Act of 1851 which established the first Native American reservations. The foundation of these reservations led to many Native Americans being displaced from areas where the United States was establishing new population centers. This has led many individuals not understanding the conditions that Native Americans live in. Lack of knowledge of the conditions patients live in may negatively affect clinicians’ ability to provide optimal healthcare. …

Sacroiliac Dysfunction In A Middle-Aged Female Runner: A Case Study, Blair Bradshaw Mar 2026

Sacroiliac Dysfunction In A Middle-Aged Female Runner: A Case Study, Blair Bradshaw

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Introduction: Research has indicated an increased prevalence of low back pain (LBP) due to SIJ dysfunction, with some reports suggesting it is the main source of pain in 15- 30% of cases. Women are more prone to incidence of SIJ pain due to a wider, more uneven, less curved, and posteriorly rotated sacrum. Additionally, women have increased mobility at the SIJ which increases stress and shear loading. Repetitive loading such as running can further contribute to SIJ dysfunction. Research suggests that female runners with SIJ pain had common biomechanical patterns putting them at more risk for injury including decreased knee …

Overcoming Thoracic Outlet Syndrome In A Young Athlete: A Case Study, Cormia Lewis, Christina Fry, Mark Knoblauch, Layci Harrison Mar 2026

Overcoming Thoracic Outlet Syndrome In A Young Athlete: A Case Study, Cormia Lewis, Christina Fry, Mark Knoblauch, Layci Harrison

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Introduction: Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) is a rare and complex condition caused by the compression of neurovascular structures in the thoracic outlet. TOS is estimated to affect 3 to 80 individuals per 1,000,000 annually, with neurogenic TOS accounting for approximately 95% of cases. Athletes who perform repetitive overhead motions are at higher risk due to increased stress on the brachial plexus. Diagnosis can be challenging as symptoms such as pain, numbness, and weakness, often mimic other conditions such as nerve entrapment or tendon pathologies. Treatment for TOS typically begins with a conservative approach, including postural correction and strengthening, activity modification, …

Fluorescent Biosensor-Guided Engineering Of Enzyme Cascades For Electrochemical Applications, Nathan J. Ricks, Monica Brachi, Fnu Arun, Egor Baiarashov, Shelley D. Minteer, Ming C. Hammond

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Substrate channeling is a strategy for enhancing flux and yield in enzymatic cascades and is increasingly relevant for applications in biocatalysis, biotechnology, and bioelectrochemical systems. However, efforts to engineer channeling are limited by the lack of high-throughput methods to evaluate and optimize channeling efficiency. Here, we present a fluorescence-based screening assay to rapidly assess substrate channeling in a model system involving fumarase and malate dehydrogenase, two sequential enzymes from the Krebs cycle. By expressing genetic fusions in Escherichia coli, quantifying intermediate (malate) and product (NADH) formation in lysate using orthogonal fluorescent readouts, and comparing product-to-intermediate ratios, we screened a library …

Engaging Underrepresented 11- To 14-Year-Olds In Music: An Autoethnographic Case Study Of A New Inner-City Afterschool Group Piano Program, Eden A. Brown

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Research in music education has documented the underrepresentation of Black students in formal music study in the United States, shaped by economic and cultural barriers (Elpus & Abril, 2024; Alegrado & Winsler, 2020). Access to piano instruction is often limited by the high cost of lessons and instruments, inequitable school funding, and the absence of culturally responsive curricula that reflect the experiences of minority students and families. Traditional piano pedagogy rarely addresses this absence, leaving the piano both symbolically and practically distant for many potential musicians in the United States. This autoethnographic case study chronicles the development, launch, and first …

Growth Mindset And Practice Strategy In Expert Pianists, Yiling Li Mar 2026

Growth Mindset And Practice Strategy In Expert Pianists, Yiling Li

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Growth mindset is often theorized to support persistence, strategic learning, and reflective regulation, yet little is known about whether growth mindset differentiates how expert pianists organize and evaluate their practice strategies. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine whether expert pianists’ growth mindset beliefs relate to multidimensional practice strategy effectiveness and usage and to metacognitive indicators of adaptive regulation, including strategy adaptability, self-monitoring effectiveness, confidence in strategy selection, and the illusion of fluency (feeling well prepared in practice yet underperforming in performance). Participants were 90 expert pianists (piano faculty members at North American universities classified as Research 1) who …

Kennelly V. Mid Coast And The Maine Law Court's Erroneous Ruling On The Discoverability Of Redacted Patient Info, John Blegen Mar 2026

Kennelly V. Mid Coast And The Maine Law Court's Erroneous Ruling On The Discoverability Of Redacted Patient Info, John Blegen

Student Journal of Information Privacy Law

This paper examines a recent Maine Law Court decision, Kennelly v. Mid Coast, in which the Law Court held that the medical records of individuals not involved in a lawsuit, even when redacted of identifying materials, are protected from discovery orders in a malpractice lawsuit, where the records would be used to demonstrate a standard of care to be expected of the administering doctor. It then examines the privacy interests individuals retain in their redacted healthcare records more broadly, in part to emphasize the large variety of contexts in which this issue can come up, and also to show how …

Can Ai Fix Anti-Money Laundering? The Case For Federated Intelligence In Financial Crime Prevention, Matthias Connelly Mar 2026

Can Ai Fix Anti-Money Laundering? The Case For Federated Intelligence In Financial Crime Prevention, Matthias Connelly

Student Journal of Information Privacy Law

The global anti-money laundering (AML) regime is failing. Trillions of dollars are laundered each year, yet governments detect only a fraction of that activity, even as financial institutions spend hundreds of billions on compliance. In the United States, AML regulation has evolved from a retrospective, prosecution-oriented framework into an expansive, preventative regime that measures inputs rather than enforcement outcomes. Although artificial intelligence has demonstrated potential to improve detection, firm-siloed AI systems introduce substantial financial, technological, and systemic risks, including prohibitive development costs, data- privacy constraints, and market concentration among third-party service providers. This Article argues that federated learning offers a …

Friend Or Tether: How Regulation Can Cut The Strings Of Manipulative Chatbots, Steve Hammerton Mar 2026

Friend Or Tether: How Regulation Can Cut The Strings Of Manipulative Chatbots, Steve Hammerton

Student Journal of Information Privacy Law

In the time since AI chatbots and other LLMs became widely available to the public, there has been a pattern of deaths linked to interactions with this technology. While it was settled in early 2026, Garcia v. Character Technologies serves as a case study of how AI chatbots can negatively prey on vulnerable groups in the absence of interventions to mitigate harmful AI behaviors and tragic human outcomes. There is not a singular approach to regulating the harmful effects of predatory chatbots; however, this paper advocates for a harms-based regime influenced by protections in human-subject research. In a sense, AI …
