Multi-Modal Tensor Fusion For Alzheimer’S Disease Recognition, Mason Li, Tiffany Le, Jiajing Huang, Yuxin Wen Mar 2026

Multi-Modal Tensor Fusion For Alzheimer’S Disease Recognition, Mason Li, Tiffany Le, Jiajing Huang, Yuxin Wen

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Accurate and early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is critical for effective intervention, disease monitoring, and patient care. Traditional diagnostic approaches rely on a single modality, such as clinical assessments, neuroimaging, or genetic markers, which may fail to capture the complex, multifaceted nature of AD. Multimodal learning has therefore been explored to integrate complementary information across data sources. However, conventional fusion strategies, including early feature concatenation and late decision-level fusion, often model modalities independently and fail to capture high-order cross-modal interactions. To address these limitations, we propose a multimodal tensor fusion network (MTFN) that integrates heterogeneous data sources, including visual …

Leveraging Feature Fusion And Convolutional Neural Networks For Concrete Crack Prediction, Amal Abdulbaqi Maryoosh, Saeid Pashazadeh, Pedram Salehpour

Baghdad Science Journal

Detection of cracks in concrete is crucial for the safety of bridges and the overall infrastructure. This paper presents a new hybrid method that combines handcrafted and deep features to significantly improve classification accuracy. Texture and semantic information are captured using Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and a pre-trained Xception model, respectively. These features are converted by the Bag of Visual Words (BoVW) method, combined, and the best features are selected by using the Apriori algorithm. The selected features are classified utilizing the light MobileNetV3, a large network. Our method is tested on four public datasets, namely CODEBRIM, DIMEC, Crack, BCD, …

Enhanced Botnet Detection Using A Modified Naïve Bayes Algorithm With Laplace Smoothing And Famd-Based Feature Agglomeration, Ahmed L. Alshami, Bashar M. Nema, Alaa H. Al-Hamami

Baghdad Science Journal

Botnets turned into a security problem that would put user privacy and security at risk. Progressive and flexible Machine Learning (ML) techniques are necessary for robust botnet revealing. In this study researchers presented an integration of the modified Naïve Bayes and M3L algorithms that uses Factor Analysis of Mixed Data (FAMD) for feature aggregation, and Laplace smoothing for adjustment to address the limitation of conventional Naïve Bayes classifiers for detecting botnet. The modified algorithm uses Laplace smoothing to address problems with zero-frequency data and improve the classifier's adaptability. FAMD was used to merge continuous and categorical features to improve the …

Recognition Of Arabic Derived Handwritten Letters Using A Vgg-Like Convolutional Neural Network, Mouhssine El Atillah

Baghdad Science Journal

Due to its complexity, the Arabic language and its extensions build a fertile field of research in the field of artificial intelligence in general and optical character recognition (OCR) specifically. There are several languages that use the Arabic alphabet in their manuscripts. These languages innovated new letters to pronounce sounds not found in the Arabic language. These letters are called 'Arabic-derived letters'. To enrich the Arabic language, we can use these letters to know the true pronunciation of intrusive words in the Arabic language. This article deals with the Arabic-derived letters (ADL) dataset. It is a new dataset that consists …

Phase Patterning In Mother-Infant Interbrain Synchrony And Its Associations With Dyadic Behaviors During Free Play, Lindsey M. Riera-Gomez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Interbrain synchrony (IBS), or coordinated brain activation, between parents and infants is thought to support emerging social and cognitive development. Few studies have examined how neural coupling unfolds during the second year of life; a period marked by growing autonomy and complexity during play. Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning, this study investigated mother-infant brain-to-brain synchrony during naturalistic free play interactions with a sample of 31 mother-infant dyads (12-24 months). Interbrain synchrony was examined in six cortical regions of interest (ROIs), with a focus on phase alignment. Rigorous behavioral coding captured maternal sensitivity, intrusiveness, child involvement, and dyadic relational qualities. …

Stuyvesant Square Apts Llc V. Vorick

All Decisions

The landlord commenced a holdover proceeding against the tenant, alleging illegal residential occupancy of a former medical office due to uncorrectable building code violations concerning courtyard dimensions affecting natural light requirements. The court granted the landlord a final judgment of possession, finding the unit could not be legalized. However, the court also awarded the tenant treble damages for rent overcharge, holding that a commercial unit used residentially can be rent-stabilized. It dismissed the tenant's harassment claim, distinguishing "dwelling" from a narrower "dwelling unit," but granted an order to correct violations. The tenant's request for attorneys' fees was denied as they …

Is Precision Agriculture Technology Adoption Persistently Overestimated?, Trey Malone, Chad Fiechter, Zanliang Meng, James Lowenberg‐Deboer, Bruce Erickson, Jay Akridge Mar 2026

Is Precision Agriculture Technology Adoption Persistently Overestimated?, Trey Malone, Chad Fiechter, Zanliang Meng, James Lowenberg‐Deboer, Bruce Erickson, Jay Akridge

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

Precision agriculture is sometimes assumed to diffuse steadily over time, and industry planning frequently extrapolates early adoption trends forward. This study evaluates the accuracy of such expectations by comparing agricultural input dealers' forecasts of future service offerings with the actual levels of offerings that dealerships eventually provided. Using 21 waves of the CropLife-Purdue Precision Agriculture Dealership Survey from 2000 to 2025, we examine expected and realized precision agriculture offerings across 26 technologies. We document systematic and persistent overestimation of adoption: for most technologies, expected diffusion exceeds realized outcomes, with forecast errors becoming especially pronounced as adoption flattened or declined in …

The Evolution Of Self-Awareness In Conscious Organisms, Robert A. Dielenberg Mar 2026

The Evolution Of Self-Awareness In Conscious Organisms, Robert A. Dielenberg

Journal of Conscious Evolution

Self-awareness in conscious organisms remains an enduring puzzle for philosophers and neuroscientists. This paper proposes a tripartite evolutionary model tracing its emergence through three sequential types: the sensory self (primitive egocentric, valence-tagged awareness of sensory states), the bodily self (external objectification of the body as a distinct entity, evidenced by mirror self-recognition in select species), and the cognitive self (internal objectification of the mind enabling recursive self-transformation). Adopting a monist framework, the model treats consciousness as the biological substrate of delayed neural apperception (the “Delayed Present”), within which selves emerge as increasingly sophisticated models. It distinguishes non-human metacognition—implicit, online regulation—from …

The Impact Of The Two-Way Immersion Model On Hispanic Pre-Service And In-Service Teachers’ Understanding Of Curriculum Implementation In Early Childhood Field Placements, Omar J. Vigo Mar 2026

The Impact Of The Two-Way Immersion Model On Hispanic Pre-Service And In-Service Teachers’ Understanding Of Curriculum Implementation In Early Childhood Field Placements, Omar J. Vigo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Dual language education, also known as Two-Way Immersion (TWI), is a teaching method that puts native English speakers and native speakers of another language in the same classroom. This helps both groups become bilingual and biliterate (Christian, 1996; Lindholm-Leary, 2001). The TWI approach highlights several benefits, including bilingualism and biliteracy, academic achievement, cross-cultural competence, cognitive improvements, and equity and accessibility (Lindholm-Leary, 2001). Research on the TWI model in adults is limited, although it has demonstrated effectiveness in supporting Hispanic teacher candidates, unlike studies conducted in primary education. This demonstrates that the TWI methodology benefits students (Van Booven, 2012). This …

Neurodegenerative diseases feature diverse pathological protein aggregates, including Lewy bodies in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and skein-like filaments in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The physical mechanisms underlying this morphological diversity remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that aggregation of the prion-like domain of hnRNPA1 (A1PrD), implicated in AD and ALS, is driven by solution composition and phase transition dynamics. Utilizing 3D timelapse and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy, we show that solution conditions modulate phase separation, gelation, and fibrillation, resulting in distinct structures such as fibril, gel, and starburst morphologies. Homotypic and heterotypic interactions between A1PrD and RNA were observed to shift the …

K2p Channels As Key Regulators Of Cardiovascular And Pulmonary Vascular Function, Hala Y Abdelnasser, Xinchun Pi, Lavannya M Pandit, Bradley K Mcconnell

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Two-pore domain potassium (K2P) channels are the most recently identified family of potassium channels. They are regarded as the largest group of background “leak” channels, encoded by 15 mammalian KCNK genes, and divided into six subfamilies (TWIK, TREK, TASK, TALK, THIK, and TRESK). These channels have a role in stabilizing the resting membrane potential. Their widespread presence in the heart and vasculature supports cellular homeostasis by regulating cardiac rhythm, vascular tone, and protection against ischemic stress. The TASK, TWIK, and TREK subfamilies are the most abundantly expressed K2P channel subfamilies in the cardiovascular system, and dysregulation of specific members has …

Secure Machine Learning In Networking Systems, Wenwei Zhao Mar 2026

Secure Machine Learning In Networking Systems, Wenwei Zhao

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With the rapid integration of Machine Learning (ML) into networking systems, ensuring the security and trustworthiness of these intelligent frameworks has become a paramount concern. While ML offers unprecedented capabilities in spectrum management and collaborative learning, it also introduces novel vulnerabilities that can be exploited by sophisticated adversaries. This dissertation investigates and addresses critical security challenges across three key dimensions of ML-driven networking: adversarial spectrum sensing, the security of privacy-preserving unlearning processes, and efficient post-attack model recovery.

First, we address the threat of adversarial spectrum attacks in cognitive radio networks, where malicious nodes manipulate sensing reports to disrupt spectrum access. …

“It Takes A Big Thrust To Destabilize An Entrenched Practice”: On Taruskin And The Western Traditions, Ronit Seter

Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal

This memorial essay begins with a brief appreciation of Richard Taruskin’s The Oxford History of Western Music and its critical reception (Susan McClary, Charles Rosen). It continues with comments on the early stages of his career, noting his strategic pincer movement, that is, a pivot from his early research on Russian operas—to his 1980 groundbreaking JAMS article on Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring on the one hand, and a source reading book (Weiss-Taruskin, 1984) on the other. Both became essential for launching his career, and for our field. I then delve into several of Taruskin’s core ideas—about current and past …

Richard Taruskin And The Early Music Movement, Uri Golomb Mar 2026

Richard Taruskin And The Early Music Movement, Uri Golomb

Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal

Richard Taruskin’s writings on the Early Music Movement had a pivotal influence on debates surrounding the concept of historical authenticity in musical performance. Taruskin championed the thesis that historically-informed performance (HIP) is only tenuously connected to actual past practices, that “a specious veneer of historicism clothes a performance style that is completely of our own time, and is in fact the most modern style around” (as Taruskin wrote in a 1988 essay, reprinted in his seminal collection Text and Act). In arguing his case, he correctly diagnosed the practices and motivations of a major group of performers within the Early …

Farewell To A Beloved Buddy, David Josephson

Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal

“You never know when it’s the last time.” For sixty years, from a chance meeting when we were undergraduates at Columbia until his last days, the incomparable Richard Taruskin gave me the great gift of his friendship. I never knew why, still don’t, but I reveled in every moment we shared. After I decamped for Brown ten years later, and he eventually for Berkeley, our meetings grew fewer and a cherished correspondence (those from its last months excerpted here) filled the gaps. COVID-19 put finis to our reunions. “The last time” would come and go with all too little warning, …
