Discussing Discus: Exploring Coaching Interactions In A Throws Training Environment, Alexandra Baltazar Hall
Discussing Discus: Exploring Coaching Interactions In A Throws Training Environment, Alexandra Baltazar Hall
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
The literature on sport coaching has predominantly employed deductive and qualitative approaches to the study of pre-defined coach behaviours, and athlete self-reported perceptions of coaching communication. These methods overlook the inherently contextual and interactional nature of coaching, where the effective communication of sport-specific feedback and technical corrections are key to improving athletic ability. This study employs Discursive Psychology (DP) and Conversation Analysis (CA) to the inductive exploration of coaching interactions and practices in an indoor throws training environment, with a group of discus throwers. Audio-visual recordings of a training session were analysed using CA, and transcribed with Jefferson (2012) and …
Hfacs Framework Applied To American Airlines Flight 1420, Max Zuieback
Hfacs Framework Applied To American Airlines Flight 1420, Max Zuieback
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
The Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) is an accident investigation framework designed to identify both the direct actions of frontline personnel and the organizational conditions that contribute to accidents. It examines human error at four levels: unsafe acts of operators, preconditions for unsafe acts, unsafe supervision, and organizational influences. By tracing factors across these tiers, investigators can reveal how deeper systemic weaknesses allow errors to result in failures in the cockpit. This study applies HFACS to American Airlines Flight 1420, which crashed during a landing at Little Rock National Airport in 1999. The flight crew attempted to land …
Vibration Control In Uavs For Enhanced Lidar Accuracy Using Metamaterials, Kylie Michaud
Vibration Control In Uavs For Enhanced Lidar Accuracy Using Metamaterials, Kylie Michaud
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
As technology develops, new systems are being created to deliver increased accuracy, cost-effectiveness, and overall efficiency. A specific example of this is LiDAR sensors onboard UAVs for 3D mapping applications of structures. As these sensors become lighter, this allows manufacturing to use smaller UAVs for closer and more confined environmental spaces. However, smaller UAVs introduce higher vibrational frequencies, those that current systems struggle to mitigate. The implementation of metamaterial structures can act as a dampener for these high frequency ranges. Metamaterials can be used to create bandgaps, which can enable frequency ranges that can prevent vibrations from affecting UAVs. Implementation …
Modeling The Gravitation Field Of M85 Using Newtonian Physics And 3d Vector Fields In Matlab, Jeffery Smothermon, Jose Murphy, Allen Perry, Jamie Shore, Caden Mosteller, Jose Pons
Modeling The Gravitation Field Of M85 Using Newtonian Physics And 3d Vector Fields In Matlab, Jeffery Smothermon, Jose Murphy, Allen Perry, Jamie Shore, Caden Mosteller, Jose Pons
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
This project explores the gravitational field of the supermassive blackhole M87, using multivariable calculus and Newtonian physics. The gravitational field is treated as a three-dimensional gravitational field vector, derived from Newton’s universal law of gravitation, assuming the black hole as a point mass: g(x,y,z)=-∇Φ=G*M*(R/|R|^3) Where G is the gravitational constant, M is the mass of the black hole, and R is the radial vector from a particle to the center of the black hole. To overcome the inaccuracy of Newtonian Gravitation of black holes, the Schwarzschild radius is implemented to omit parts of the blackhole that are past the event …
The Use Of Descent Gradients In Ai Learning Models, Alexander Wheeler
The Use Of Descent Gradients In Ai Learning Models, Alexander Wheeler
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
AI learning models use mathematical techniques to effectively minimize errors and improve prediction accuracy. Essential to these techniques is the use of the gradient descent, which outputs the correct way to adjust the model’s parameters to most effectively minimize error. The gradient descent is applied at the point of error produced by the program’s loss-function, a multi-variable function that mathematically represents the magnitude of error. This paper focuses on the implementation of the gradient descent, and its optimization of updating the models’ parameters. Multiple types of loss functions are examined, such as squared error and cross-entropy, and their influence on …
The Dangers Of Social Media In Political Theory, Eden M. Shimanek
The Dangers Of Social Media In Political Theory, Eden M. Shimanek
Global Tides
Increasing political polarization is a prominent feature of the twenty-first-century political landscape, with social media playing a significant role. This essay evaluates social media as a political platform through Hannah Arendt’s notion of the Vita Activa, which describes the political realm and the ideas of totalitarianism. Using this framework, I argue that the surging political use of social media creates digital “echo chambers” that result from the loss of human plurality, which ultimately marks the diverse nature of the political realm. I would continue to argue that these chambers evolve into the notion that Arendt notes as world alienation or …
A Case Against Pragmatic Encroachment, Mahali Kuzyk
A Case Against Pragmatic Encroachment, Mahali Kuzyk
Global Tides
In their paper, Evidence, Pragmatics, and Justification Fantl and McGrath offer a seemingly intuitive and attractive route to a revision of what counts as epistemic justification and knowledge. They argue that knowledge is not just a matter of evidence, but depends in part on one’s practical situation. Higher stakes and different utilities can change whether a belief is knowledge-constituting. This essay will argue that Fantl and McGrath’s attempt to use their Knowledge-Action principle (KA) to back pragmatic encroachment ultimately fails.

Representations Of Law And Race Revisited: An Updated Survey Of Recent American Film, Cynthia D. Bond
Denver Sports & Entertainment Law Journal
This article revisits the author’s Laws of Race/Laws of Representation: The Construction of Race and Law in Contemporary American Film, 11 Univ. Tex. Rev. of Sports and Ent. L. 219 (2010), surveying recent developments in mainstream films’ depiction of the interrelated narratives of law and race. This article applies to current film the 2010 article’s paradigm, which articulated three key narrative aspects of depictions of race and law in popular film: 1.) the raced construction of the lawyer-hero; 2.) the denial or displacement of the law’s role in constructing race and race-based discrimination; and 3.) the suppression or revision of …
