Guitar Note Analyzer - Picking Patterns & Scales, Tamara Lynn Houalla
Guitar Note Analyzer - Picking Patterns & Scales, Tamara Lynn Houalla
Electrical Engineering
The Guitar Note Analyzer helps beginner-to-intermediate guitar players advance their playing skills. The project detects the successive picks of guitar strings in real time at a rate of two notes per second. The device detects the frequency of notes played within the range of 50Hz – 1.5KHz. The hardware – microphone sensor, amplification circuitry, and microcontroller - is secured inside the sound hole of the user’s guitar. The hardware extends out of the guitar and connects to the user’s laptop via a USB cable. This allows relevant information to be displayed live to the user on their monitor, and to …

Nellie Almee Courtright was the first female to earn a law degree from the University of Louisville School of Law, but she had an accomplished career before -- and even after -- she stepped foot into a law classroom. This is the account of a woman who made her own way in the world, and made life better for hundreds in doing so.
Let's Get Real: Weak Artificial Intelligence Has Free Speech Rights, James B. Garvey
Let's Get Real: Weak Artificial Intelligence Has Free Speech Rights, James B. Garvey
Fordham Law Review
The right to free speech is a strongly protected constitutional right under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. In 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court significantly expanded free speech protections for corporations in Citizens United v. FEC. This case prompted the question: could other nonhuman actors also be eligible for free speech protection under the First Amendment? This inquiry is no longer a mere intellectual exercise: sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) may soon be capable of producing speech. As such, there are novel and complex questions surrounding the application of the First Amendment to AI. Some commentators argue that AI …
Medical Harm Without Negligence, Valerie Gutmann Koch
Medical Harm Without Negligence, Valerie Gutmann Koch
Fordham Law Review
In December 2019, seven women from one family underwent highly invasive surgeries based on genetic test results that indicated that each were at significant risk of developing cancer by age seventy. Subsequently, after procedures that (among other things) permanently scarred and disfigured their bodies and ended their chances of having biological children, they learned that their particular mutation was not, in fact, pathogenic.
This Article focuses on a previously under-recognized problem: what happens when a patient’s previously classified pathogenic variant is downgraded to uncertain (or even benign) status? Intuitively, it might seem that the genetic testing company, the surgeons, or …
Enhancing Motor Imagery Decoding Via Transfer Learning, Olawunmi George, Sarthak Dabas, Abdur Sikder, Roger Smith, Praveen Madiraju, Nasim Yahyasoltani, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed
Enhancing Motor Imagery Decoding Via Transfer Learning, Olawunmi George, Sarthak Dabas, Abdur Sikder, Roger Smith, Praveen Madiraju, Nasim Yahyasoltani, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed
Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Motor imagery (MI) is arguably one of the most common brain–computer interface (BCI) paradigms. The decoding process, in many cases, involves the use of small amounts of data gathered over a period. The decoding performance might therefore be limited, due to the size of available data. Also, the non-stationarity of signals across sessions and subjects can pose a challenge to effective decoding. To solve these challenges, transfer learning is proposed as the suitable approach, which could yield optimal performance even with small amounts of data and handle the non-stationarity of signals with adaptation. It has been applied across domains and …
An Interprofessional Prediabetes And Diabetes Self--Management Education Quality Improvement Project Among Vulnerable Populations At A Tuberculosis Hospital, Robert Saul Castro Natal
An Interprofessional Prediabetes And Diabetes Self--Management Education Quality Improvement Project Among Vulnerable Populations At A Tuberculosis Hospital, Robert Saul Castro Natal
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Background. Patients greatly benefit from diabetes self-management education (DSME) as it boosts knowledge and self-efficacy, decreases body weight, fasting blood sugar, and hemoglobin A1C levels, and improves overall health outcomes in a cost-effective manner. Unfortunately, many individuals with prediabetes and diabetes who qualify for DSMEs do not attend these classes nor receive sufficient prediabetes and diabetes support elsewhere to attain guideline recommended metrics. However, individuals from vulnerable populations and without DSME education experience disproportionate diabetes-related complications worsening health outcomes. Aims: Increase general prediabetes and diabetes knowledge, facilitate behavior change, improve glycemic, metabolic, and lipid values, and increase …
Implementing Food Insecurity Screening On A College Campus, Norma Martinez
Implementing Food Insecurity Screening On A College Campus, Norma Martinez
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Background. Students attending universities have higher rates of food insecurity than U.S. households. Most college campuses do not routinely screen students for food insecurity, which can affect students’ health and school performance. Currently, the university health clinic does not screen students for food insecurity. Purpose. To screen all students who present to the university clinic for food insecurity and evaluate students with food insecurity for malnutrition. Evidence. Foreman et al. (2018) and Abu and Oldewage-Theron (2019) found that food insecurity was present at some of the largest Texas universities at rates higher than the national average. Project Objectives. To screen …

Patient Care Management Of Hypertension Through Improving Follow-Up And Reducing Missed Appointments In A Primary Care Clinic: A Qi Project, Victoria Idubor
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Background. Missed follow-up appointments constitute significant problems clinics and health centers face nationwide. A significant portion of primary care providers’ patients will require follow-up appointments to manage their chronic illnesses. About 20 to 40% of patients seen at this clinic have a history of hypertension. Uncontrolled hypertension has been shown to increase the risk of certain cardiovascular disease events and mortality. Follow-up appointments are crucial for patients with hypertension to monitor for more life-threatening signs and manage their overall care. Purpose. The purpose of this project is to improve the timely management of care for patients with hypertension …

AfriArch is an archaeological and paleoenvironmental data community designed to integrate datasets related to human-environmental interactions in Holocene Africa. Here we present a dataset of bioarchaeological stable isotope (C/N/O) and radiocarbon measurements from African archaeological sites spanning the Holocene. Modern measurements, when reported together with archaeological data in original publications, are also included. The dataset consists of 5568 entries and covers the entirety of Africa, though most isotopic research has been concentrated in southern Africa. The AfriArch isotopic dataset can be used in paleodietary, paleodemography, paleoclimatic, and paleoenvironmental studies. It can also be employed to highlight data gaps across space …
“Together We Arrived And Together We Shall Leave”: The Gouverneur Parents Association And The Politics Of Race And Disability In Postwar New York, Jorge A. Matos
Publications and Research
This essay documents the history of the Gouverneur Parents Association (GPA), a group of mostly Black and Latinx parents whose disabled children were institutionalized at the Gouverneur Division of the infamous Willowbrook State School in New York City. The GPA, in coalition with Black, Latinx, and White parents and activists, led a campaign during the 1970s and 1980s to close Willowbrook, then part of a national network of sites denounced by disability activists during the heyday of the deinstitutionalization movement. In this essay I argue that the postwar migration of Black and Latinx communities into New York City amid an …
Why Energy Efficiency Is Needed In Rwanda, Jean Ishinzibigwi
Why Energy Efficiency Is Needed In Rwanda, Jean Ishinzibigwi
Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies
Perspective on the benefits of energy efficiency and cost savings on energy was changed by the experience of working with the Nebraska Industrial Assessment Center. Visiting various industrial locations in Nebraska to see how different energy-saving techniques are employed to save money on energy costs and reduce energy waste. Rwanda can put several ideas into action to lessen the energy loss, which is too much now.
The government's Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA) and other departments are crucial to Rwanda's energy sector. The primary ministry in charge of developing renewable energy is MININFRA (methane, peat, geothermal, solar and wind energy). The …
Sex And The Superman: Gender And The Superhero Monomyth, Christopher Maverick
Sex And The Superman: Gender And The Superhero Monomyth, Christopher Maverick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since the 1938 introduction of Superman, superheroes have been ever-present in American popular culture. Indeed, with the modern preponderance of comic book movies dominating the American cinematic box-office, superhero fantasy is arguably the most important genre of fiction being produced in the contemporary moment. Peter Coogan, Kurt Busiek and many other scholars have discussed the prominence and relevance of the superhero fantasy as a genre. Still others, including Umberto Eco and Marco Arnaudo, have asserted that the superhero is not so much a genre and as it is the evolution of mythology. In Sex and the Superman, I argue …
In Vitro Rooting Techniques In Prunus Spp. For Propagation And Disease Screening For Armillaria Root Rot (Arr) Resistance, John Lawson
All Theses
Prunus is a genus widely cultivated to produce edible fruit including almond (P. amygdalus), peach (P. persica (L.) Batsch), cherries (P. avium and P. cerasus), among others. The cultivation of Prunus is economically important for several regions of the United States and relies on appropriate cultivars and rootstocks that are adapted to a growing region. Encroaching plant pathogens are forcing breeders to use sexually compatible germplasm from related species for introgression of novel alleles that confer tolerance or resistance. This is especially true in the rootstock breeding where interspecific hybridization is often used …
Performance Based Design And Machine Learning In Structural Fire Engineering: A Case For Masonry, Deanna Craig
Performance Based Design And Machine Learning In Structural Fire Engineering: A Case For Masonry, Deanna Craig
All Theses
The volatile and extreme nature of fire makes structural fire engineering unique in that the load actions dictating design are intense but not geographically or seasonally bound. Simply, fire can break out anywhere, at any time, and for any number of reasons. Despite the apparent need, fire design of structures still relies on expensive fire tests, complex finite element simulations, and outdated procedures with little room for innovation. This thesis will make a case for adopting the principles of performance-based design and machine learning in structural fire engineering to simplify the process and promote the consideration of fire in all …
Learning To Reason About Code With Assertions: An Exploration With Two Student Populations, Sarah Blankenship
Learning To Reason About Code With Assertions: An Exploration With Two Student Populations, Sarah Blankenship
All Theses
Code tracing is fundamental to students’ understanding of a program, and symbolic reasoning that entails learning to use assertions with abstract input and output values, as opposed to concrete values, enhances that understanding. Symbolic reasoning teaches students valuable abstraction and logic skills that will serve them well in all aspects of programming and their software
development careers.
We use lessons integrated into an online educational tool to supplement classroom instruction to help students learn symbolic reasoning. We explore two ways for students to learn about assertions: Writing assertions to capture the behavior of given code and solving Parsons-style problems in …

Antarctica is one of the most vulnerable regions to climate change on Earth and studying the past and present responses of this polar marine ecosystem to environmental change is a matter of urgency. Sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) analysis can provide such insights into past ecosystem-wide changes. Here we present authenticated (through extensive contamination control and sedaDNA damage analysis) metagenomic marine eukaryote sedaDNA from the Scotia Sea region acquired during IODP Expedition 382. We also provide a marine eukaryote sedaDNA record of ~1 Mio. years and diatom and chlorophyte sedaDNA dating back to ~540 ka (using taxonomic marker genes SSU, LSU, …
Nonexclusive Functions And Separation Of Powers Law, Ilan Wurman
Nonexclusive Functions And Separation Of Powers Law, Ilan Wurman
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
The Constitution’s text, structure, and history suggest that some governmental functions strictly and exclusively appertain to a particular branch, and to the exercise of a single vested power. Many governmental functions, however, are nonexclusive: their exercise has some combination of legislative, executive, and judicial characteristics and, as a result, can be exercised by different branches exercising different vested powers. This Article proposes to reorient our thinking around exclusive and nonexclusive governmental functions, and demonstrates how doing so clarifies many existing doctrines and debates in administrative and separation of powers law. This approach differs in important respects from standard functionalist and …
The Judicial System’S Unjust Relationship With Attorney-Client Privilege: How Judges Knowingly (And Erroneously) Abrogate Important Contractual Arrangements In Corporate Transactions, Edward S. Adams
Michigan Business & Entrepreneurial Law Review
A Delaware court has recently recognized the need to enforce contracts that delineate where the attorney-client privilege rests after an asset transfer. This Article will argue that courts across the country should recognize the important and legitimate reasons for this type of decision. Part I will review how the attorney-client privilege functions for corporations and how courts respect the importance of the privilege in other contexts. Part II will review the fundamental corporate changes in which these questions can arise and situations in which courts choose to recognize the importance of protecting the attorney-client privilege. Part III will argue that …
Closing The Auditor Loophole: Towards A More Perfect Work-Product Waiver Doctrine, Evan Mulbry
Closing The Auditor Loophole: Towards A More Perfect Work-Product Waiver Doctrine, Evan Mulbry
Michigan Business & Entrepreneurial Law Review
The Supreme Court created strong protections for the attorney’s thought processes and analysis in Hickman v. Taylor. However, the Court in Arthur Young & Co. created a loophole enabling opposing lawyers to access the lawyer’s thought processes and legal strategies. This loophole was created when the Court allowed discovery of an auditor’s tax workpapers, and lower courts then interpreted this decision to imply that disclosing information to the outside auditor constitutes a waiver of attorney work-product protections. This loophole can be corrected through a Congressional statute that impacts the Federal Rules of Evidence, which would protect communications between outside auditors …
Minimum Deadly Contacts, Jesse Noltimier
Minimum Deadly Contacts, Jesse Noltimier
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
Domestic violence is a national epidemic. Roughly one in three women will experience some form of domestic violence during their lifetime. Women are also seventy times more likely to be killed in the two weeks after leaving their intimate partner than at any other time during their relationship. Thus, it is not surprising that the only safe haven available to those who escape their abusers is often located outside of the state where the violence occurred. The difficulties do not end once a survivor moves to another state. If she wants to obtain a lifesaving domestic violence protection order, she …

Critical Race Feminism, Health, And Restorative Practices In Schools: Centering The Experiences Of Black And Latina Girls, Thalia González, Rebecca Epstein
Critical Race Feminism, Health, And Restorative Practices In Schools: Centering The Experiences Of Black And Latina Girls, Thalia González, Rebecca Epstein
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
Restorative practices (RP) in K-12 schools in the United States have grown exponentially since the early 1990s. Developing against a backdrop of systemic racism, RP has become embedded in education practice and policy to counteract the harmful and persistent patterns of disparities in school discipline experienced by students of color. Within this legal, social, and political context, the empirical evidence that has been gathered on school-based restorative justice has framed and named RP as a behavioral intervention aimed at reducing discipline incidents—that is, an “alternative” to punitive and exclusionary practices. While this view of RP is central to dismantling discriminatory …

Gender And Corporate Crime: Do Women On The Board Of Directors Reduce Corporate Bad Behavior?, Ido Baum, Dalit Gafni, Ruthy Lowenstein Lazar
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
Public debate on mandating gender representation on boards of directors in the United States is close to a boiling point. California introduced a mandatory quota in 2018 only to see it constitutionally disqualified in 2022, and the Nasdaq Stock Market followed suit with new diversity rules in 2021 for all corporations listed on the exchange. While public discourse focuses on corporate performance, not much is known about the link between gender diversity and corporate normative obedience.
In this study we explore the relationship between boardroom gender representation and corporate compliance with the law. We examine the impact of gender diversity …
Evaluating Mislabeling Of Raw, Ready-To-Eat Seafood Products In Orange County, California, Courtney Kitch
Evaluating Mislabeling Of Raw, Ready-To-Eat Seafood Products In Orange County, California, Courtney Kitch
Food Science (MS) Theses
Raw, ready-to-eat (RTE) seafood products have become increasingly popular globally, but they are vulnerable to species mislabeling and substitution. DNA barcoding allows for fish species identification by extracting, amplifying, and sequencing a standardized gene target. A wide variety of fish products have been studied with DNA barcoding, but notably missing are ceviche and poke, particularly in the United States. Sushi is known to be a target of mislabeling but has not been extensively studied in Orange County, CA. The objective of this study was to investigate species labeling and use of acceptable market names for sushi, poke, and ceviche sold …

Jail Health And Early Release Practices, Brandon L. Garrett, Deniz Ariturk, Jessica Carda-Auten, David L. Rosen
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
Local jails in the United States incarcerate millions of people each year. The COVID-19 pandemic made jail health a pressing public health concern nationally, where releasing individuals from jails occurred across the country in order to prevent pandemic spread. But releases also faced substantial resistance and exposed long-standing challenges in delivering adequate healthcare in jail settings. People in jail have substantially higher levels of medical need than individuals in the general population, with large numbers having serious mental illnesses and substance use disorders. Further, overcrowded conditions and poor healthcare standards and delivery make jails harmful to those already-vulnerable people. What …
Advances In Nlp Algorithms On Unstructured Medical Notes Data And Approaches To Handling Class Imbalance Issues, Hanna Lu
Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
This dissertation is composed of three research projects, each addressing one aspect of the text classification tasks on unstructured medical notes.
The first study investigated the model performance of sequence deep learning models that are widely used in NLP tasks such as RNN, GRU, LSTM, Bi-LSTM, as well as CNN and the novel and more advanced attention-based algorithms such as the Transformer Encoder and BERT-Base. Probing The Boundaries Of Human Agency, Sook Mun Wong
Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
In this dissertation, I aim to advance our understanding of human agency and how it is computed. First, I probe the limits of what behavior we can and cannot produce agentically. Secondly, I explore microdosing with psychedelic drugs as a method of perturbing and studying changes to the sense of agency. Thirdly, I use transcranial magnetic stimulation to induce body movements and investigate how the sense of agency is affected. Finally, I summarise my findings and synthesize insights to further our understanding human agency.
