Beware What You Google: Fourth Amendment Constitutionality Of Keyword Warrants, Chelsa Camille Edano
Beware What You Google: Fourth Amendment Constitutionality Of Keyword Warrants, Chelsa Camille Edano
Washington Law Review
Many Americans have potentially had their privacy rights invaded through invisible, widespread police searches. In recent years, local and federal governments have compelled Google and other search engine companies to produce the personal information of users who have conducted a search query related to a crime. By using keyword warrants, the government can conduct a dragnet search for suspects, imposing suspicion on users and exposing their personal information. The keyword warrant is a symptom of the erosion of the Fourth Amendment protection against suspicionless searches. Not only is scholarship scarce on keyword warrants, but also instances of these warrants are …
A Call To Abolish Determinate-Plus Sentencing In Washington, Rachel Stenberg
A Call To Abolish Determinate-Plus Sentencing In Washington, Rachel Stenberg
Washington Law Review
For certain incarcerated individuals who commit sex offenses, Washington State’s determinate-plus sentencing structure requires a showing of rehabilitation before release. This highly subjective “releasability” determination occurs after an individual has already served a standard sentence. A review of recent releasability determinations reveals sentences are often extended on arbitrary and inconsistent grounds—especially for individuals who face systemic challenges in prison due to their identity or condition. This Comment shows that the criteria to determine whether individuals are releasable is an incomplete picture of their actual experience in the carceral setting, using the distinct example of incarcerated individuals with mental illness. While …
Expanding Judicial Discretion To Grant Compassionate Release During Covid-19, Deborah Wang
Expanding Judicial Discretion To Grant Compassionate Release During Covid-19, Deborah Wang
Washington Law Review
In the 1980s, Congress introduced compassionate release to counteract the increased rigidity of our federal sentencing system. This mechanism allowed courts, through a motion filed by the Bureau of Prison’s director, to reduce a prisoner’s sentence if “extraordinary and compelling” circumstances warrant such a reduction. However, because the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) seldom brought these motions, few people were released early via compassionate release. At the same time, public discourse and concerns regarding mass incarceration have continued to grow, causing lawmakers to revisit and revise compassionate release through the First Step Act of 2018 to ensure that this mechanism’s potential …

ENGR 333
Sustainability is a multi-faceted grand challenge. One of today’s largest challenges is related to sustainability: CO2 emissions from energy consumption. Calvin University purchases natural gas for the energy services it provides; however, it is a major contributor to the amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. The ENGR 333 section B class was tasked with the question: What would it take to eliminate Calvin’s natural gas-related net CO2 emissions? After many hours of research and calculations, the ENGR 333 section B class answered this question with recommendations such as implementing ground source heat pumps, console heat pumps, air source heat …

Faculty Research 2022
Mice bred in 2017 and entered into the C2017 cohort were tested for possible lifespan benefits of (R/S)-1,3-butanediol (BD), captopril (Capt), leucine (Leu), the Nrf2-activating botanical mixture PB125, sulindac, syringaresinol, or the combination of rapamycin and acarbose started at 9 or 16 months of age (RaAc9, RaAc16). In male mice, the combination of Rapa and Aca started at 9 months and led to a longer lifespan than in either of the two prior cohorts of mice treated with Rapa only, suggesting that this drug combination was more potent than either of its components used alone. In females, lifespan in mice …

Assessing Cognitive Flexibility With The Id/Ed Set-Shifting Task In Rats Modeling Depression, Hannah Orndorff, Rachael Arnold, Caroline Gheen, Grace Gray, Christopher Toepfer, Ivy Heusmann
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Previous research has shown cognitive capabilities either increase or decrease risk factors of depression, there is a gap in research on the effects depression has on cognitive flexibility. Cognitive flexibility controls the appropriate way to respond to changing thoughts, behaviors, and environmental signals. Higher performing cognitive flexibility is associated with positive life outcomes (Dajani & Uddin, 2015). Therefore, there is a need to further understand the impacts depression can have on cognitive flexibility. The intra-dimensional extra-dimensional (ID/ED) set-shifting task is utilized in the present study to measure cognitive flexibility in rats modeling depression due to unlimited sucrose consumption in adolescence. …

Measuring The Inventor's Contribution
Measuring The Inventor's Contribution
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
All inventors should be compensated for the value of their contributions. Inventors contribute both to the patent system and to the technology commercialization process by providing access to a qualifying disclosure describing a qualifying idea. Yet today, a schism divides the patent world and the commercial world over the value of these inventive contributions. Unlike the commercial world, the patent world pays inventors for the contributions of noninventor technology commercialization roles. In particular, seminal reasonable royalty cases like Georgia-Pacific and TWM Manufacturing allow patentees to recover infringer profits and proxies thereof—in violation of congressional mandate and the Supreme Court’s opinion …

Intuitive Robot Integration Via Virtual Reality Workspaces, Minh Tram
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
As robots become increasingly prominent in diverse industrial settings, the desire for an accessible and reliable system has correspondingly increased. Yet, the task of meaningfully assessing the feasibility of introducing a new robotic component, or adding more robots into an existing infrastructure, remains a challenge. This is due to both the logistics of acquiring a robot and the need for expert knowledge in setting it up. In this paper, we address these concerns by developing a purely virtual simulation of a robotic system. Our proposed framework enables natural human-robot interaction through a visually immersive representation of the workspace. The main …

Data Discovery Analysis On Complex Time Series Data, Peter Lawrence Severynen
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Complex time series are a ubiquitous form of data in the modern world. They have wide application across many different fields of scientific inquiry and business endeavor. Time series are used to understand and forecast weather patterns, voting patterns, computer network traffic, population health outcomes, demographic changes, the results of scientific experiments, and the performance of stocks and mutual funds. But time series can be difficult to analyze by conventional methods when the data is multivariate, incomplete, or in different formats. To address these issues, an investigation of several multivariate time series datasets was performed using the methods of automatic …

In the past few decades there has been a significant growth in commercial aerospace transportation encompassing both atmospheric and space flight. In fact, the aircraft industry has seen several generations of engines and vehicles developed. While the space launch sector has switched from exclusively expandable rockets systems to including reusable rocket systems. Now, the current push in the industry is to develop a reusable in-atmosphere hypersonic transportation system. The development of any aircraft entails communicating the interactions among the principal design disciplines (aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, materials, etc.). For hypersonic vehicles, the interdependence of these interactions is enhanced to a level …

Bioactivation And Detoxification Of Organophosphorus Pesticides In Freshwater Planarians Shares Similarities With Humans, Danielle Ireland, Christina Rabeler, Taixi Gong , '24, Eva-Maria S. Collins
Biology Faculty Works
Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) are a chemically diverse class of insecticides that inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Many OPs require bioactivation to their active oxon form via cytochrome P450 to effectively inhibit AChE. OP toxicity can be mitigated by detoxification reactions performed by carboxylesterase and paraoxonase. The relative extent of bioactivation to detoxification varies among individuals and between species, leading to differential susceptibility to OP toxicity. Because of these species differences, it is imperative to characterize OP metabolism in model systems used to assess OP toxicity. We have shown that the asexual freshwater planarian Dugesia japonica is a suitable model to assess OP …

Spare The Rod: African American Students’ Experience Of Postsecondary Student Conduct Processes, Melissa Sanders
Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive
Although African Americans enroll at postsecondary institutions at similar rates as other ethnic groups, consistently, they lag in degree completion. This has led to lower wages, fewer employment opportunities, and higher health disparities among African Americans. Consequently, the literature is full of studies attempting to increase Black student degree attainment. This includes their perception of campus climates, academic preparedness, and sense of belonging. However, other opportunities to promote and encourage African American scholastic success, such as the disciplinary process, are understudied. To address this gap, I utilized a phenomenological qualitative study to examine the way African Americans perceived the impact …

Factors Affecting Health-Seeking Behaviour Among Men Who Have Sex With Men In Starehe Sub-County, Nairobi City County, Anthony Omariba
MSc in Advanced Practice Nursing
Men who have sex with other men (MSM) exist in Africa, as they do elsewhere. The continued proscription of MSM behavior leads to exclusion and discrimination. According to a global report, MSMs are responsible for most HIV transmission. MSMs in Kenya constantly fear being hurt because of their sexual orientation, and there is scant knowledge of their health-seeking behavior. There is a need to improve the health of this group to lower disease spread to achieve global HIV reduction. This study aims to explore MSM healthcare-seeking behavior, describe barriers to healthcare-seeking, and establish perceptions of the sexual risks associated with …

Constitutional Adjudication In The United States As A Means Of Advancing The Equal Stature Of Men And Women Under The Law, Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Hofstra Law Review
In this article, the author discusses dissenting opinion in which the Supreme Court held that, under the Constitution's equal protection principle, the Commonwealth of Virginia could not exclude from a public military college. It mentions commitment in the Declaration of Independence to equality and in the Declaration and Bill of Rights to individual liberty. It also mentions Civil War ended slavery, through the addition of the Equal Protection Clause to the Constitution.

Traumatized Defendants, Troubled Attorneys: The Impact Of Vicarious Trauma On The Defense Attorney-Client Relationship, Charise Peters
Student Theses
Approximately 90% of justice-involved youth have experienced some form of trauma by the time they become involved in the justice system, and attorneys report being negatively impacted by their work with trauma-exposed populations generally. Yet, research has not focused on how varying degrees of youth trauma can impact attorney decisions and if that differs based on youth race. This study, therefore, explored vicarious trauma and its impact on juvenile defense attorneys, including how an attorney’s experience of vicarious trauma impacts case handling and perception of their youth client and how that differs based on client race and trauma history. We …

Immersive devices, such as virtual reality (VR) devices are swiftly being integrated into military and civil operations as advanced tools for training, with studies observing the beneficial aspects of employing these devices for training cognitive skills (Xie et al., 2021). However, further research is needed to understand specific characteristics of the learning effectiveness of the technology and identify which levels of immersion benefit specific learning constructs in training. This study examined the effect of immersion on four constructs related to learning, including memory retention, learner engagement, learning performance in the form of knowledge acquisition, and perceived learning in a virtual …

Character Spotting And Autonomous Tagging: Offline Handwriting Recognition For Bangla, Korean And Other Alphabetic Scripts, Nishatul Majid, Elisa H. Barney Smith
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper demonstrates a framework for offline handwriting recognition using character spotting and autonomous tagging which works for any alphabetic script. Character spotting builds on the idea of object detection to find character elements in unsegmented word images. An autonomous tagging approach is introduced which automates the production of a character image training set by estimating character locations in a word based on typical character size. Although scripts can vary vividly from each other, our proposed approach provides a simple and powerful workflow for unconstrained offline recognition that should work for any alphabetic script with few adjustments. Here we demonstrate …

The Ward Round: Friend Or Foe In Postgraduate Training? A Grounded Theory Study Of Residents’ Perspectives, Mariam Noorani
Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa
The ward round has traditionally been a learning activity in medical education. Apart from education, ward rounds have multiple roles including patient care and communication. Some studies have described the ward round as an ideal place to learn patient management while others reported that little learning happens on rounds due to lack of time and patient volume. This study aimed to develop a deeper understanding of ward round learning from the perspec-tive of postgraduate trainees. A constructivist grounded theory approach was used and data was collected during focus group discussions. Data were analyzed by initial coding, then grouped into focused …

Student And Teacher Perspectives On Asynchronous Learning During The Covid Pandemic, Michele Ehrhart
Education Doctorate Dissertations
The COVID Pandemic shut down schools across the country, leaving K-12 schools unprepared for virtual learning. In this mixed methods study, I examined data gathered from my 8th-grade science classes to assess the effectiveness of asynchronous instruction. My original research question was: How much if at all, did learning outcomes differ as a function of how the lessons were taught (uninterrupted instructional video versus interrupted/interactive Edpuzzle video)? Based on a preliminary examination of data, my study expanded into how self-regulated learning affected students’ comprehension, interest, and motivation. Study results showed no statistical differences in students’ comprehension based on how lessons …

The Second World War ended with the exposure of the Nazi death camps and the threat of global nuclear annihilation. The former disclosed the depths of human depravity and the latter warned us about the severity of the consequences that could await us as a result. The grimness of each, much less both, had the effect of shielding from our collective consciousness the equally dire warnings from the First World War that had occurred only a couple of decades earlier. Debs And The Federal Equity Jurisdiction, Aditya Bamzai, Samuel L. Bray
Notre Dame Law Review
The United States can sue for equitable relief without statutory authorization. The leading case on this question is In re Debs, and how to understand that case is of both historical and contemporary importance. Debs was a monumental opinion that prompted responses in the political platforms of major parties, presidential addresses, and enormous academic commentary. In the early twentieth century, Congress enacted several pieces of labor legislation that reduced Debs’s importance in the specific context of strikes. But in other contexts, the question whether the United States can bring suit in equity remains disputed to this day. The …

The Constitutional Law Of Interpretation, Anthony J. Bellia Jr., Bradford R. Clark
Notre Dame Law Review
The current debate over constitutional interpretation often proceeds on the assumption that the Constitution does not provide rules for its own interpretation. Accordingly, several scholars have attempted to identify applicable rules by consulting external sources that governed analogous legal texts (such as statutes, treaties, contracts, etc.). The distinctive function of the Constitution—often forgotten or overlooked—renders these analogies largely unnecessary. The Constitution was an instrument used by the people of the several States to transfer a fixed set of sovereign rights and powers from one group of sovereigns (the States) to another sovereign (the federal government), while maintaining the “States” as …
