Insurability And Liability For Ai-Caused Harms, Mark A. Geistfeld
Insurability And Liability For Ai-Caused Harms, Mark A. Geistfeld
Connecticut Insurance Law Journal
The opacity of AI decision-making has led many tort scholars to conclude that ordinarily it will be infeasible to prove negligence or defect-based forms of products liability for AI-caused harms. According to mainstream tort theory, this evidentiary hurdle justifies strict enterprise liability for commercial AI distributors. Fully internalizing injury costs within these business enterprises adequately incentivizes them to adopt reasonably safe practices while relying on their liability insurance policies to efficiently and fairly compensate accident victims.
Mainstream theory, however, decisively biases the analysis in favor of strict enterprise liability by not accounting for how the expansion of liability would substantially …
The Digital Supreme Court: A Meta-Analysis Of Antitrust Retrospectives Using Frontier Llms, Pablo Portillo
The Digital Supreme Court: A Meta-Analysis Of Antitrust Retrospectives Using Frontier Llms, Pablo Portillo
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
This project examines whether frontier Large Language Models (LLMs) can serve as structured “expert critics” in economic and legal reasoning. I built a panel of AI judges composed of GPT-5.5, Opus 4.7, and DeepSeek V4, to evaluate three antitrust merger retrospectives: Carlton et al. (2022) on AT&T/Time Warner, Hazlett and Crandall (2024) on T-Mobile/Sprint, and Argentesi et al. (2021) on Facebook/Instagram plus Google/Waze. Using a 10-factor weighted rubric, the panel scored each paper on empirical alignment, parameter robustness, counterfactual validity, dynamic adaptability, and analytical rigor. I then synthesized the nine evaluations as the “Highest Judge,” comparing where the models converged, …
Confident And Wrong : How Llm Miscalibration Mirrors The Dunning-Kruger Effect Across Ambiguity Levels, Maggie Grespin
Confident And Wrong : How Llm Miscalibration Mirrors The Dunning-Kruger Effect Across Ambiguity Levels, Maggie Grespin
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
Psychology gave us the Dunning-Kruger effect, the observed pattern that a person is often overconfident when they fall in the lowest quartile of that skill’s proficiency. This research is interested in seeing if large language models (LLMs) suffer the same miscalibration of metacognitive skills. Using thirty deliberately ambiguous college-level math question prompts, this research assesses Claude Sonnet 4.6’s ability to interpret each question, provide an answer, and rate its own confidence without asking for clarification. Results show that while confidence appropriately drops at the moderate tier, it rebounds on the hardest questions (0.840) even as accuracy falls to 0.450. This …
Know Thyself: A Conversation That Reveals How You Think: Adaptive Ai Assessment Across Eight Psychometrically Grounded Metrics, Adam Leider
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
AI's ability to assess human cognitive and psychological patterns through natural conversation is an underexplored area with significant potential, particularly for college students navigating a demanding and overwhelming transitional period. This project involved selecting eight psychometrically grounded metrics, designing an adaptive question bank and detailed system prompt to govern the assessment conversation, building a second AI model to review and correct results before they are shown, and deploying the full application as a publicly accessible web tool. The result is a conversational assessment that delivers a personalized psychological profile, including strengths, areas for growth, metric interactions, and actionable suggestions in …
A Software-Defined Radio Testbed For Mimo-Ofdm Communications, Chaz G. Maschman
A Software-Defined Radio Testbed For Mimo-Ofdm Communications, Chaz G. Maschman
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In this thesis, we implement a testbed for multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems via GNU Radio. Specifically, we implement a configurable framework for the construction of MIMO-OFDM software-defined radio (SDR) systems as a GNU Radio module. The GNU Radio MIMO-OFDM module consists of multiple algorithmic blocks necessary for implementation of a MIMO-OFDM system. This includes a library for the generation of orthogonal or pseudo-random pilot sequences, amendments to the Schmidl-Cox protocol for MIMO synchronization, and the creation of click-and-drag GNU Radio blocks implementing the conversion of arbitrary data sent via external programs to MIMO-OFDM frames, the initial …
“He Should Be Primaried, And I Will Lead The Charge Against Him”: An Autopsy On The Decline Of Grassroots Organizing And Rhetoric In A Monetized Democracy, Chiara H. Baez
Research and Creativity Symposium
Protest movements in the US have been steadily declining, unable to keep up with changing rhetoric and societal expectations regarding First Amendment free speech. Seemingly overnight, protests have lost the ability to directly input the people’s voice into policymaking. Grassroots protest movements are being priced out of the political participation that was once accessible to them by Political Action Committees (PACs), and politicians are favoring pollsters’ skewed data over the public opinion expressed in organized protest. This has created a systemic barrier, halting the voice of the American people. Grassroots protest movements have not disappeared from the American political landscape; …

Geographies Of Change: Exploring Demographic Shifts & Civic Engagement Through Gis-Based Inquiry, Emily Murphy
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
The research question addressed by my Capstone project was: How can an ArcGIS-based inquiry project about local demographic change be designed to engage students in civics and community identity? It is based within secondary social studies education, particularly human geography. Through a constructivist approach, this project applies key findings from research on Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geographic inquiry-based learning, spatial citizenship, and suburban demographic shifts. These highlight the instructional potential of ArcGIS for student-centered interactivity and spatial analysis, as well as challenges in implementation. Using a backwards-planning curriculum design methodology informed by Understanding by Design (UbD), this project develops a …
Evolving Approaches To Teaching Secondary English Language Arts In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence, Timothy Crepeau
Evolving Approaches To Teaching Secondary English Language Arts In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence, Timothy Crepeau
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Centered on the question of how to foster academic integrity while maintaining accountability for AI-assisted plagiarism in secondary English language arts (ELA) education, this project responds to the growing reality that students can outsource core cognitive tasks—reading, analysis, and writing—to AI tools. Informed by key influences from neuroscience and educational research, particularly studies on neural plasticity, the reading brain, and cognitive offloading, the project draws on scholarship by Collins, Wolf, and contemporary AI-in-education theorists. These influences underscore the central premise that meaningful learning is not merely demonstrated through output, but developed through the neurological processes activated by sustained cognitive effort. …
The Causes, Effects Of, And Solutions To A Nation-Wide Reading Comprehension Decline And Answers To The Question Of What Can Teachers Do About It?, Otto Harris
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
The purpose of this project was to research the causes and effects of the reading comprehension decline in America. The research question: What is causing this decline, and how can we combat it? stemmed from personal interest in this topic and its relevancy in the school district I taught in. Research into this topic revealed factors such as texts lacking relevance to student lives, inaccurate comprehension measurement tools being used year after year, and the lifelong effects of lowered reading comprehension on adults’ lives after high school. In response to this need, a capstone project was developed that would provide …
From Viewing To Thinking: Developing Learner's Critical Thinking Skills By Engaging In Philosophical Discussions Through Films, Andrew Barnhart
From Viewing To Thinking: Developing Learner's Critical Thinking Skills By Engaging In Philosophical Discussions Through Films, Andrew Barnhart
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
This capstone presents the idea that having learners discuss philosophical ideas that have been introduced to them through films and readings, with films serving as the primary vehicle for introducing those ideas, has the potential to help them think critically. Philosophy helps learners to logically reason, which leads them to critically think. However, the research found that if educators over-rely on textbooks, it may cause learners to become passive learners who do not critically think about the ideas they are learning. To remedy this, the project created for this capstone is a guidebook that helps educators use film, primary literary …
The Impact Of Growth Mindset On Student Confidence And Performance In Mathematics, Micaela Büching
The Impact Of Growth Mindset On Student Confidence And Performance In Mathematics, Micaela Büching
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Many educators frequently hear their students claim they are simply not a “math person.” This common phrase reflects a fixed mindset that can strongly impact a student's academic journey. This capstone project addresses the research question: In what ways does a growth mindset framework impact student confidence, effort, and academic performance in mathematics? A comprehensive literature review revealed that while growth mindset is a powerful tool for equity, successful implementation requires a shift in teacher beliefs and the integration of growth-oriented pedagogical strategies into daily classroom practice. In response, a three-part professional development series was designed for K–5 educators, focusing …
Building Teacher Capacity: Using Professional Development To Implement Literacy Across The Curriculum In Middle Schools, Katie Grandgenett
Building Teacher Capacity: Using Professional Development To Implement Literacy Across The Curriculum In Middle Schools, Katie Grandgenett
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
The research question guiding this project is: How can professional development for middle school teachers support the implementation of literacy across the curriculum at the middle school level? The project addresses the issues arising on students falling behind in literacy skills as they make the transition to secondary education where there is less focus on foundational skills. This work builds upon the existing literature focusing on literacy education and how literacy can be used at the secondary level across all contents. This includes research on disciplinary literacy, reading, writing and speaking skills associated with literacy improvement. The methodology involved designing …
Social Emotional Learning In A High School Setting, Aaron Stack
Social Emotional Learning In A High School Setting, Aaron Stack
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
This project examined the capstone question: How can one design and implement a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program for high school students? This topic is important as more and more students are exhibiting less desirable behaviors inside the classroom. While exploring this question, several key findings emerged. First, SEL programming in a high school setting may have a positive impact on students’ academic performance and behaviors. Second, there is no clear distinction between the effectiveness of the program as long as the SEL ideas are consistently explored. Based on these two findings, an SEL program was developed for high school …
Practices That Improve Critical Thinking Development In Secondary Classrooms, Brian Mueggenberg
Practices That Improve Critical Thinking Development In Secondary Classrooms, Brian Mueggenberg
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
This capstone examines how mathematics teachers can more intentionally develop students’ critical thinking skills through classroom instruction and how professional development can support that practice. The guiding question for the project was: How can secondary mathematics teachers intentionally design and implement instructional strategies that promote students’ critical thinking within the constraints of classroom instruction? A review of educational research identified a recurring problem with traditional instructional practices: direct instruction effectively supports procedural fluency, but often provides limited opportunities to develop higher-order thinking and conceptual fluency. Key influences on this project included research on thinking classrooms, productive struggle, and dialogic teaching. …
Connecting Children To Urban Environments Through Picture Books, Sophie Taylor
Connecting Children To Urban Environments Through Picture Books, Sophie Taylor
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
More children than ever before live in urban locations, and many do not see their city streets and natural environments represented in picture books. In the midst of a climate crisis, educators and parents may be seeking environmental books and activities that seek to connect children to their natural communities. The purpose of this capstone project was to explore the importance of picture books in connecting children with their environment through the creation of an urban-based children’s book with embedded environmental terminology and concepts, as well as associated activities. A review of relevant literature uncovered five central themes: illustrated books’ …
An Informal Environmental Education Curriculum To Help Learners Reconceptualize The Idea Of The “Wild”, Kimber Hendrix
An Informal Environmental Education Curriculum To Help Learners Reconceptualize The Idea Of The “Wild”, Kimber Hendrix
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Philosophers posit that the “wild” is something often portrayed as elusive, dangerous, or out of reach. Research indicates that exposure to outdoor environments can yield positive outcomes. This project is designed to take learners into a specific outdoor environment and utilize Restorative Justice and Coyote Mentoring Techniques in order to assist them in reconceptualize their idea of “wild”. This project evolved into a ten-lesson curriculum designed for fourth- to sixth-grade learners, but it could be adapted for learners of any age. The curriculum is designed to take place in a consistent outdoor setting so that learners can build a relationship …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Lianas are increasing in many forests and show higher stem turnover rates and different chemical profiles compared with trees. However, liana deadwood decomposition dynamics have been overlooked. We redress this omission and hypothesize that liana wood decomposes faster than tree wood due to its larger vessels and higher nutrient content than trees, resulting in greater activity of both microbial and invertebrate decomposers. We tested this hypothesis in a common-garden decomposition experiment with deadwood of two size classes (2.5 and 4 cm diameter) belonging to 12 liana and 12 tree species in tropical China. Liana wood decomposed 28.6% faster than tree …
Reimagining Incarceration: Scandinavian-Inspired Policy Innovation In Pennsylvania And California, Isabel M. Mallory
Reimagining Incarceration: Scandinavian-Inspired Policy Innovation In Pennsylvania And California, Isabel M. Mallory
College Honors Program
The United States’ decentralized system of incarceration leaves individual states largely responsible for criminal justice policy, yet the country continues to maintain the highest incarceration rate in the world, prompting growing interest in reforms that both reduce incarceration and improve outcomes. One such approach emphasizes rehabilitation over traditional goals such as deterrence and incapacitation, drawing on the example of Scandinavian prison systems as an evidence-based practice. This thesis examines how states, as laboratories of democracy, are experimenting with rehabilitation-centered models of incarceration through different mechanisms of policy change. Focusing on two case studies – Pennsylvania’s Scandinavian Prison Project as a …

The Importance Of Body Size And Spatial Scale In Modeling Winter Bird Distributions, Carissa M. Mobley
The Importance Of Body Size And Spatial Scale In Modeling Winter Bird Distributions, Carissa M. Mobley
Student Publications
Birds’ annual cycles include biologically linked breeding and non-breeding seasons, yet most research and bird atlases focus exclusively on the breeding season. There have been very few winter bird atlas projects in North America, and none have been published for the northeastern United States. Short daylight hours and harsh weather limit winter survey coverage, making species distribution models (SDMs) essential for addressing spatial gaps.
I evaluated the optimal spatial scale for SDMs across bird species differing in body size and tested whether optimal scale varies with body mass. Using 16,967 eBird checklists collected during the first winter survey period (December …

•People misunderstand Lucifer’s deception
•(shown through Temptation of Jesus in Matthew 4) •Lack of engaging ways to teach theological concepts •Background: Lucifer corrupts not through force, but subtle self-elevation and doubt Motivation: •Just initially wanted to make a game of how sin entered the world for fun •Just thought it was a cool idea in general.
Solution:
•Dialogue-driven narrative game •6+ story chapters •10+ regions •Focused on spiritual conflict, deception, and discernment •Uses event-based progression •Presents Lucifer through subtle manipulation, by being a false light by choosing self-pleasure over what is right.
Race-Based Violence Against Educators And School Personnel: The Roles Of Race And Harm, Jared Hunt
Race-Based Violence Against Educators And School Personnel: The Roles Of Race And Harm, Jared Hunt
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Educator-directed violence is a serious problem that has adverse effects on the careers and lives of those victimized. Educators and school personnel in the United States experience this violence within institutions that are shaped by long-checkered histories of racism and racial discrimination (Bickford and Clabough, 2021) that continue today (Carver-Thomas, 2018). Thus, there is a need to consider the roles of race and racism in the violence educators and school personnel experience. This study investigated educators’ and other school personnel’s experiences of physical and verbal/threatening violence, harm, and psychological distress. Through a racial stress and trauma framework, this study also …
Automation Of Discovery And Classification Of Compact X-Ray Binaries In Globular Clusters, Justin Brooks
Automation Of Discovery And Classification Of Compact X-Ray Binaries In Globular Clusters, Justin Brooks
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
The discovery and classification of Compact X-ray Binaries (CXRBs) within globular clusters improves our understanding of stellar encounters, the evolution of globular clusters, accretion physics, and the high-energy physics of the compact objects involved in these systems. For this reason, scientists compare X-ray observations from the Chandra X-ray Observa?tory with visible and UV observations from the Hubble Space Telescope to find objects of unusual colors and magnitudes which might be CXRBs. However, this process is time-consuming and requires significant amounts of data and expertise to achieve reliable classifications. This paper de?scribes this process, as well as a proposed automated process …
