Standardized Home Blood Pressure Log Implementation For Patients With Hypertension To Increase Patient Awareness And Clinical Action, Ashley Alcala
Standardized Home Blood Pressure Log Implementation For Patients With Hypertension To Increase Patient Awareness And Clinical Action, Ashley Alcala
Doctoral Dissertations & Projects
Background: Home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) is recommended for hypertension management, yet primary care clinics often lack standardized workflows for distributing, collecting, and using home blood pressure (BP) data. Inconsistent reporting and limited patient understanding of their own BP trends, such as whether readings are stable, elevated, or unchanged, reduce providers ability to make timely clinical decisions.
Problem: Despite evidence supporting HBPM, patients rarely brought usable BP logs to follow‑up visits, limiting providers ability to assess BP control, identify trends, and make timely medication or care plan adjustments.
Approach: This project used a Plan‑Do‑Study‑Act (PDSA) model to implement a standardized …
Deportation And Death: Examining The Second Trump Administration’S Immigration Policy Through The Lens Of Just War Theory, Finley W. Snyder
Deportation And Death: Examining The Second Trump Administration’S Immigration Policy Through The Lens Of Just War Theory, Finley W. Snyder
Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics Essay Contest
From day one of the second Trump administration, the White House has treated illegal immigration as an invasion, both rhetorically and, to a lesser extent, legally. The administration has not shied away from the use of force in this campaign, leading to the notable killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti along with countless acts of violence across the nation. This essay seeks to evaluate the ethics of the second Trump administration's immigration policy from within this "war" framing through the lens of just war theory. While there has been considerable attention to just war theory in the context of …
Ethical Issues Of The Advancement Of Artificial Intelligence, Primo G. Moreno
Ethical Issues Of The Advancement Of Artificial Intelligence, Primo G. Moreno
Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics Essay Contest
Artificial intelligence has rapidly become integrated into our modern society, allowing for new streamlined methods to reign supreme. These methods raise concerns about control, privacy, and the shifting boundaries between human and machine decision-making. This paper examines how AI has developed, how it is currently being used, and the ethical dilemmas that arise as societies integrate it into systems such as healthcare, law enforcement, and businesses. Through the expansion of historical, technical, and philosophical perspectives, this paper argues that society must prioritize having set guidelines and systems for monitoring newly created AI systems. Without them, the implementation of AI models …

Human Osteosarcoma Cell Line That Overexpresses Cd4/Ccr5 Or Cd4/Cxcr4 To Study Hiv-Host Interactions, Harry Baffour Awuah
Human Osteosarcoma Cell Line That Overexpresses Cd4/Ccr5 Or Cd4/Cxcr4 To Study Hiv-Host Interactions, Harry Baffour Awuah
Biotechnology Theses
Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) entry into host cells occurs through interactions between the viral surface envelope glycoprotein (Env) and the host receptor CD4, and co-receptors CCR5 or CXCR4. However, understanding these interactions in membrane contexts remains limited due to low receptor and coreceptor densities in commonly used cell models. To address this, we developed cellular systems with elevated CD4 expression and either CCR5 or CXCR4. Human osteosarcoma cells (HOS), which lack endogenous surface expression of HIV receptor (CD4) and co-receptors (CCR5 or CXCR4), were engineered via lentiviral transduction to overexpress CD4 and either CCR5 or CXCR4. Cells were …

A Test Case For Raccoon Roundworm Anthelmintic Baiting In Western Virginia, Karen Powers, W. Jayme Viers, Carolyn K. Rossmeisl, L Kristen Page
A Test Case For Raccoon Roundworm Anthelmintic Baiting In Western Virginia, Karen Powers, W. Jayme Viers, Carolyn K. Rossmeisl, L Kristen Page
Virginia Journal of Science
As a test case to determine the efficacy of anthelmintic baiting to reduce raccoon roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis) prevalence in western Virginia, we deployed baits in a mountainous area of Roanoke Co., Virginia that historically was occupied by Allegheny woodrats (Neotoma magister). We deployed anthelmintic baits at 6-wk intervals from August to December 2024 at a density of 100/km2. We opportunistically collected raccoon (Procyon lotor) scat in the drop area from August 2024 to May 2025 and found a marked decline in prevalence of raccoon roundworm in the samples. Deeming this a measured …

Enhancing Urban Garden Capacity By Linking Biodiversity And Ecosystem Function, Mary T. Nguyen, Carleen Rauh, Shelby Gresch, Charlotte Correiro, Heidi Elmendorf, Adriane Fugh-Berman, Gina Wimp, Alexandra L. Decandia
Virginia Journal of Science
Urban agriculture broadly describes food and plant cultivation in metropolitan areas. While biodiversity is thought to support ecosystem health and resilience, the relationship between above-ground and below-ground diversity has been understudied in urban green spaces. This study examines plant, animal, bacterial, and fungal diversity across three distinct urban habitats: a turf lawn, a forb garden, and a farming space. Using bacterial 16S rRNA and fungal ITS2 sequencing, soil nutrient analyses, and surveys of vegetation and wildlife, we connect diverse philosophies in urban agriculture to their role in advancing community diversity and ecosystem function. We found that different urban gardens support …
An Austrian Approach To Accounting Regulation: How Policy Intervention Distorts The Market For Assurance Services, Kyan Howe
Student Scholarship
This thesis applies the causal-realist method of the Austrian School of Economics to the market for assurance services in the United States. The central argument is that post-crisis accounting regulation has systematically distorted the incentive structures of independent public accounting firms in ways regulators do not predict and cannot fully control. Financial crises, properly understood through Austrian Business Cycle Theory, originate in monetary distortions rather than market failure. Post-crisis regulatory responses nonetheless target the profession rather than the underlying distortion, introducing rules that alter the institutional constraints within which auditors exercise professional judgment.
The thesis develops a judgment-based equation of …
The Varying Strength Of Parental Rights, Mark Strasser
The Varying Strength Of Parental Rights, Mark Strasser
Missouri Law Review
The United States Supreme Court has recognized that parental rights implicate fundamental interests and that statutes adversely affecting those rights require close examination. However, the Court has been inconsistent in both its analysis and results when deciding which statutes burdening parental rights nonetheless pass constitutional muster. The Court’s ambivalence and lack of clarity have made parental rights jurisprudence confused and confusing, as illustrated by the dissensus among the state supreme courts regarding which visitation statutes are constitutional. Yet, this jurisprudential quagmire cannot be blamed on one particular decision, as if a single clarification or modification could resolve the problem. Rather, …
Deliberate Indifference Reimagined: Towards An Objective Standard For Eighth Amendment Prison Condition Violations, Lane Hines Woodke
Deliberate Indifference Reimagined: Towards An Objective Standard For Eighth Amendment Prison Condition Violations, Lane Hines Woodke
Missouri Law Review
This Article critiques the existing standard for establishing deliberate indifference under the Eighth Amendment, which primarily relies on the subjective intent of correctional officials. It argues for a shift towards an objective standard that assesses the reasonableness of state responses to known risks, particularly in light of persistent unconstitutional conditions within correctional facilities, such as inadequate living conditions and unchecked violence. The Article contends that the current subjective approach creates an insurmountable evidentiary burden for incarcerated individuals and fails to ensure meaningful compliance with constitutional protections. By advocating for an objective framework akin to standards used in Fourth and Fourteenth …
The Politics Of Preservation: Federal Implications Of The Smithsonian Executive Order, Autumn H. Duncan
The Politics Of Preservation: Federal Implications Of The Smithsonian Executive Order, Autumn H. Duncan
Missouri Law Review
When society thinks of the phrase “revisionist history,” George Orwell’s harrowing words likely come to mind. The term itself is used in the political realm as “an accusation of deliberately distorting irrefutable historical ‘facts’ to serve a particular political agenda or viewpoint.” Although the topic of revisionism is a hot-button issue among historians and non-historians alike, Americans are divided over how to approach history. About 47% of the population believes that history should question the nation’s past, while 53% contend that history should celebrate it. This divide becomes even more evident when broken down by party lines: 84% of Republicans …
Product Liability In The Digital Age: A Flexible Framework For Categorizing Technology After Ameer V. Lyft, Andrew Jensen
Product Liability In The Digital Age: A Flexible Framework For Categorizing Technology After Ameer V. Lyft, Andrew Jensen
Missouri Law Review
A single line of code can now cause a car crash, deny a loan, or—as in the case of Ameer v. Lyft—contribute to a man’s death. Traditional product liability law, born in the era of smokestacks and assembly lines, still assumes that only tangible things can be defective products. When software replaces machinery and algorithms make life-or-death decisions, courts face a question: can code itself be a defective product? The answer matters enormously. If courts decline to treat mass-marketed applications as “products,” victims of dangerous software may be left without recourse. On the other hand, if they expand liability too …
An Unnecessary Burden: Why It Is Time To Eliminate Mcdonnell Douglas From Ada Failure-To-Accommodate Claims, Jonathan G. Jain
An Unnecessary Burden: Why It Is Time To Eliminate Mcdonnell Douglas From Ada Failure-To-Accommodate Claims, Jonathan G. Jain
Missouri Law Review
Several strangers sit together in a room, staring at three black lines on a white card. Their task seems simple: choose the line that matches the length of a line printed on a second card. One by one, the strangers correctly choose the matching line, and the task repeats with new white cards and new black lines. The correct answer is always obvious, but after a few rounds, one man suddenly finds himself alone in giving the correct response. What he does not know is that the others have been instructed to begin choosing incorrect lines. Eventually, despite what his …
Purpose Over Perception: Distinguishing Status From Viewpoint In A University’S Limited Public Forum, Haleigh J. Bachman
Purpose Over Perception: Distinguishing Status From Viewpoint In A University’S Limited Public Forum, Haleigh J. Bachman
Missouri Law Review
In nearly every university, cultural centers and student organizations quietly provide tangible, essential support: one student finds a community to celebrate his shared heritage; another student finds guidance after struggling to obtain her necessary accommodations in class; an international student rehearses for a cultural showcase that will be the highlight of his semester. These spaces provide community, safety, and a sense of belonging that classrooms and lecture halls often do not. Nevertheless, public universities often face challenges in allocating physical space and funding resources to student organizations— particularly to those supporting cultural and affinity groups. On one hand, universities can …

Prevalence Profile Perceived Stress And Impact On Quality Of Life For Recurrent Aphthous Ulcers: A Cross-Sectional Epidemiological Study In Egypt, Dalia Ghalwash
Dentistry
Recurrent Aphthous Ulcerations (RAU) are among the most frequent oral ulcers with unknown etiology and multiple risk factors. This study assessed the prevalence profile of aphthous ulcers, risk factors, levels of perceived stress, and their impact on quality of life in an Egyptian sample. This study involved screening 4100 individuals from the outpatient clinic, Faculty of Dentistry, The British University in Egypt, and several Egyptian governorates. Patients were subjected to clinical examination and patient interviews for accurate diagnosis and collection of data. The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) was used to assess levels of perceived stress, and the Oral Health Impact …

Searching For Temporal Variations In The Fine-Structure Constant Using Espresso Spectrograph Data, David Hoffman Iv
Searching For Temporal Variations In The Fine-Structure Constant Using Espresso Spectrograph Data, David Hoffman Iv
Senior Theses
The fine-structure constant α is a dimensionless constant, defined as e²/(4πε₀ℏc) ≈ 1/137. On the order of human timescales, its value is very much unchanging, however, in recent years there has been extensive debate over whether or not the value of α has remained constant over cosmological timescales. With the natural corollary to a changing α being that either one or multiple of its constituent physical constants have also changed in value, observing a variation in the fine-structure constant would have vast ramifications for our understanding of the nature of the early universe and how it has evolved. While past …
Rural Transformations And Identity In Northern New Mexico, Eva Gemrich
Rural Transformations And Identity In Northern New Mexico, Eva Gemrich
Geography ETDs
In the U.S. West, research points to a significant transformation of rural places, including rural blight, a decline in extractive industries, and changing migration patterns. In Northern New Mexico, these rural transformations are occurring alongside a long and continuing history of tensions and conflicts relating to land, water, and property regimes, which are intertwined with notions of identity, culture, and power. Using participant observation and semi-structured interviews, this thesis explores how rural transformations, particularly shifting land ownership, have influenced identities and cultural values along the Upper Rio Chama in Northern New Mexico. I find that comparatively wealthy in-migrants are purchasing …
How The Roberts Court Killed Originalism, Eric J. Segall
How The Roberts Court Killed Originalism, Eric J. Segall
Georgia State University Law Review
Although there are at least five justices who identify as originalists on the Roberts Court, none of them exercise judicial review in an originalist manner, and the Roberts Court as an institution is no less or more originalist than previous Supreme Courts. The important difference between the Roberts Court and previous Supreme Courts is that the current justices claim to be guided by originalism, but decide cases by using a living constitutionalist, pluralistic model of judicial review.
The current chaos plaguing constitutional law and constitutional theory flows directly from this disconnect between the justices saying publicly that they are employing …
Interspecific Overlap In Seabird Diet Throughout The Breeding Season, Alexis V. Berkey
Interspecific Overlap In Seabird Diet Throughout The Breeding Season, Alexis V. Berkey
Student Publications
Seabirds are central-place foragers that breed in multi-species colonies, providing an opportunity to study species coexistence. I quantified interspecific competition among four seabird species (common terns Sterna hirundo, Arctic terns Sterna paradisaea, Atlantic puffins Fratercula arctica, black guillemots Cepphus grylle) breeding in the Gulf of Maine in 2022, 2024, and 2025. I hypothesized that, throughout the breeding season, 1) seabird diet would change and 2) interspecific overlap in diet would increase. I compared diets across species and time using direct observation of prey feeds and stable isotope values of seabird egg membranes and blood, which provide …

Indigenous Yet Suspect: The Securitization Of Saudi Arabia’S Shi'a Minority, Farah Balut
Indigenous Yet Suspect: The Securitization Of Saudi Arabia’S Shi'a Minority, Farah Balut
The Dialogue
This paper examines the marginalization of Saudi Arabia’s Shi’a minority through the lens of securitization theory. It argues that discrimination against Shi’a citizens is not periodic but embedded within the kingdom’s nation-building project, where Wahhabi orthodoxy has been fused with political loyalty. From early incorporation of the Eastern Province to the upheavals of 1979 and the reform era of Vision 2030, Shi’a identity has been framed as a potential internal threat. By tracing institutional practices, geopolitical anxieties, and lived experiences, the paper demonstrates how securitization structures conditional citizenship while highlighting Shi’a resilience within an evolving Saudi state.
Patients As Stakeholders, Isaac D. Buck
Patients As Stakeholders, Isaac D. Buck
William & Mary Law Review
Once a provider of public support and charity, the American hospital is now a source of dividends for private actors. Profit interests have encroached on, and increasingly replaced, the publicly minded heroism of the American hospital, the central hub of a complex and disordered health care system. This new profit-first posture creates ill effects for the people who rely on health care delivery: those who work within it, those who are treated within it, and those who pay for it. When hospitals need to deliver for their corporate shareholders, legitimate questions arise about how much they are delivering for patients …

Pastoral Listening Skills Training In The Black Baptist Church: Equipping Clergy To Better Support Congregants, Regina Pair Allen
Pastoral Listening Skills Training In The Black Baptist Church: Equipping Clergy To Better Support Congregants, Regina Pair Allen
Doctor of Ministry Projects and Theses
This study engages a historical survey of qualitative studies of perspectives of Black pastors regarding pastoral care, examining various avenues for training in pastoral listening and the role of ministers as theological clinicians in supporting church ministries and community needs. The findings highlight the ongoing need for professional development among pastors as primary educators and theological clinicians. The study underscores the importance of equipping Black Baptist pastors to address the clinical pastoral needs of African American congregants. The significance to this field of study is providing Black Baptist clergy with practical skills and tools, grounded in theological principles, to better …
