TMEM106B, a lysosomal transmembrane protein, is a risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer disease (ad) and TDP-43 proteinopathies. TMEM106B pathology occurs in normal aging and is increased in TDP-43 proteinopathy but its role in dementia remains unclear. Cerebrovascular disease (CVD) is a driver and co-pathology of dementia, yet its contribution to TMEM106B accumulation in the context of TDP-43 and ad neuropathological changes (ADNC) has not been explored. We analyzed post-mortem human hippocampal sections spanning not-, low-, intermediate-, and high-ADNC. In secondary analyses, cases ≥65 years were stratified by TDP-43 immunopositivity and CVD severity; cases < 65 years were included to contextualize age-associated effects. TMEM106B immunoreactivity was quantified using digital pathology. Linear regression models demonstrated that age and sex (higher in females) were independent predictors of TMEM106B immunopositivity whereas Braak stage, CERAD-NP score, and Thal phase were not. The positive TDP-43-TMEM106B association was attenuated with increased CVD pathology severity, suggesting that vascular burden modifies this relationship. Sensitivity analyses restricted to LATE-NC attenuated several associations, indicating that pooled TDP-43 findings should be interpreted cautiously given possible disease heterogeneity. TMEM106B immunoreactivity was most strongly associated with age and sex, while vascular burden, rather than ADNC level, modified its relationship with TDP-43 proteinopathy.

Agentic Hallucination Risk Scoring For Medical Llms Via Uncertainty Quantification And Clinical Knowledge Injection, Mayank Kapadia, Mohammad Masum Apr 2026

Agentic Hallucination Risk Scoring For Medical Llms Via Uncertainty Quantification And Clinical Knowledge Injection, Mayank Kapadia, Mohammad Masum

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Large Language Models (LLMs) have witnessed significant adoption across numerous domains since 2020, but their proclivity to hallucinate creates unacceptable dangers in high-risk environments like healthcare, where wrong outputs can directly jeopardize human safety. While present systems focus on pre-generation mitigation strategies, they cannot ensure the safety of individual outputs during inference. We provide a post hoc Hallucination Risk Scoring (HRS) methodology that intercepts questionable outputs before they reach patients via an agentic pipeline. Given a medical question, a domain-specific LLM generates an initial response from which five complimentary uncertainty signals are computed, which are then separated into a decision …

BACKGROUND: Hydromethylthionine mesylate (HMTM) targets tau pathology and also has tau-independent symptomatic activity. A traditional randomised placebo-controlled trial (RCT) was precluded by loss of blinding due to urinary colouration and therapeutic activity at the minimum dose required to maintain blinding.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of HMTM in participants with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and mild to moderate dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD).

METHODS: Because a traditional RCT was not feasible without loss of blinding, we compared HMTM 16 mg/day in TRx-237-039 with propensity score matched true placebo controls from the FDA-sponsored Critical Path for AD (CPAD) database with …

Replication Of Empathy And Cognitive Effort: The Trials And Errors Of An Undergraduate Researcher., Meshun S. North

Undergraduate Research Conference

Cameron et al.'s purpose for their study was to see whether, given a choice, people would choose to show empathy. Why and why not? My purpose was to know this as well, but to also get a better understanding of the research process as a whole. As a class assignment, I am also doing this replication to aid in the understanding of the replication crisis, which is a worldwide issue of researchers replicating previous experiments and not getting the same results as the original.  Our participants are all 18 and older college students on this campus. In this replication, we …

Galen Of Pergamum: Life, Literature, And Legacy, Elyse Rogers Apr 2026

Galen Of Pergamum: Life, Literature, And Legacy, Elyse Rogers

Ex Sapientia Loqui

Galen of Pergamum was a second-century physician whose work had an enduring impact on the field of medicine. His extensive writings were the primary reference and teaching materials for the medical community for over a millennium. While his ideas were revolutionary for his time, they were eventually outdated. Nevertheless, there was a continued reliance on his authority, which hindered scientific advancement. Galen both advanced the world of medicine with his emphasis on observational analysis and constrained its progress through the profound dominance of his theories.

This paper aims to understand the life of Galen and the significance of his work …

In The Shadow Of Justice: How The Mythos Of The Batman Balances Major Ethical Theories In His Pursuit Of Ideal Justice, Camille Bewley Apr 2026

In The Shadow Of Justice: How The Mythos Of The Batman Balances Major Ethical Theories In His Pursuit Of Ideal Justice, Camille Bewley

Ex Sapientia Loqui

For more than eighty years, the Batman character has exhibited a unique synthesis of major theories of Justice, and through his experiences as a vigilante, exemplified the pursuit of the ideal virtue of Justice. Because virtue requires a lived example to be understood, Batman is one of the foundational stories fulfilling this need for one of collective society’s prominent pillars. Within the horror of Gotham City–a hyperbolic, fictional representation of urban corruption–Batman’s actions as a vigilante, walking a tightrope to maintain morality even above the law might not only be justified, but necessary. The Batman’s nature, balancing ethical theories and …

Are Nonprofit Tax Exemptions And Deductions "Federal Financial Assistance"? Should They Be?, Lloyd Hitoshi Mayer Apr 2026

Are Nonprofit Tax Exemptions And Deductions "Federal Financial Assistance"? Should They Be?, Lloyd Hitoshi Mayer

Florida Tax Review

Two recent federal court decisions have reignited the debate over whether “Federal financial assistance” as used in four federal anti-discrimination statutes includes the tax benefits enjoyed by most nonprofit organizations. Both courts concluded that it does. While an appellate court reversed one decision, and the other case settled without appellate review, these holdings create significant uncertainty. And this uncertainty affects the more than 1.8 million tax-exempt nonprofits, many if not most of which do not receive federal financial assistance through other channels and so could safely conclude these statutes do not reach them, absent these decisions. This uncertainty is also …

Redemption! Valuing Closely Held Companies After Connelly, Adam Chodorow Apr 2026

Redemption! Valuing Closely Held Companies After Connelly, Adam Chodorow

Florida Tax Review

In Connelly v. United States, the Supreme Court resolved a long-standing dispute over how to treat redemption obligations when valuing a decedent’s shares in a closely held company. The Court held that redemption obligations do not offset corporate-owned life insurance proceeds obtained to fund a redemption, upsetting a long-standing practice. While the Court undoubtedly reached the right conclusion, it (1) failed to address important arguments the parties and amici raised; (2) assumed away the effects of discounts, premiums and different valuation techniques, which would have complicated the analysis without changing the conclusion; and (3) muddied the water somewhat by …

State Tax Discrimination And Internal Consistency, Michael T. Fatale Apr 2026

State Tax Discrimination And Internal Consistency, Michael T. Fatale

Florida Tax Review

The contours of the U.S. Supreme Court’s dormant Commerce Clause doctrine of internal consistency, which asks whether a state tax intrinsically overreaches in imposing a burden upon interstate commerce, are difficult to understand. This is despite the fact that a determination that a state tax violates internal consistency can have significant state fiscal consequences. This uncertainty was suggested again by the recent case, Zilka v. Tax Review Board City of Philadelphia, for which the Supreme Court later denied certiorari. See 304 A.3d 1153 (Pa. 2023), cert. denied, 145 S. Ct. 1045 (2025).

The parameters of the internal consistency …

The Mother Of All Tax Shelters, Michael Doran Apr 2026

The Mother Of All Tax Shelters, Michael Doran

Florida Tax Review

By its own account, the federal government spends more than $500 billion every year to subsidize retirement savings in 401(k) plans, IRAs and similar arrangements. That figure is larger than the annual budget of every government agency other than the four largest. The theory behind this massive subsidy is that it gives workers at all income levels an incentive to save money that they would otherwise spend, thereby enhancing retirement security, reducing old-age poverty and easing dependence on Social Security. But the theory is wrong. The retirement tax subsidy is anything but egalitarian. Less than five percent of the subsidy …

Taxing Royalties Where Value Is Created: Is A Redraft Of The Oecd Model Tax Convention Necessary?, Valentina Emanuele Apr 2026

Taxing Royalties Where Value Is Created: Is A Redraft Of The Oecd Model Tax Convention Necessary?, Valentina Emanuele

Florida Tax Review

This Article examines whether Article 12 of the OECD Model Tax Convention should be redrafted to tax royalties where value is created in an increasingly IP-driven and digitalized economy. It traces the historical evolution and current structure of royalty provisions in the OECD, U.N. and U.S. Model Conventions, highlighting inconsistencies between formal source rules and the underlying economics of royalty income. Building on an economic concept of value creation, the Article argues that royalties are best understood as active, business-related income generated through research and development, IP protection and market exploitation across multiple jurisdictions. It then proposes a reallocation of …

Time Value Of Money (One More Time), Daniel Halperin Apr 2026

Time Value Of Money (One More Time), Daniel Halperin

Florida Tax Review

Nearly 40 years ago I wrote Interest in Disguise: Taxing the Time Value of Money. The article showed that if the party’s marginal tax rate is constant, since the present value of the amount included or deducted may not change, deferral (or acceleration) of income or expense does not necessarily affect the tax impact. However, there seems to be surprisingly little recognition of the widespread impact of the insight that the timing of income and deductions may not affect value.

There are several academic proposals suggesting that recognition of present value equivalence can improve understanding of the impact of …

Electrostatic Doping Of Graphene For Tunable Diodes, Andrew Bales Apr 2026

Electrostatic Doping Of Graphene For Tunable Diodes, Andrew Bales

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

In this work, devices were fabricated to explore the limits of electrostatically doped graphene diodes utilizing hexagonal boron nitride as an insulating layer. Initial tests confirmed the graphene’s responsiveness to gate voltages and demonstrated the viability of electrostatic doping through a thin insulating layer. Degradation of the graphene during testing resulted in a lack of measurable shifts in the completed devices.

Preventing Spurious Bfd Faults On Remote Nodes During Make-Before-Break Updates On Local Nodes, Anonymous

Defensive Publications Series

The present disclosure relates to a mechanism for preventing spurious Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) faults during make-before-break (MBB) updates in a segment-routing traffic-engineering (SR-TE) network (10). A first node (12-1), operating as a head-end router, is configured to perform a label-stack update for a first SR-TE candidate path while maintaining continuity of BFD monitoring. Prior to the update, the first node (12-1) disables a local BFD detection timer and transmits a first BFD control packet that omits a reverse-path Binding Segment Identifier (BSID). The packet includes a diagnostic field  instructing a peer node (12-6) to disable its BFD detection timer. …

Low Latency Wake Up Of Wearable Devices, Nazih Almalki, Sumukh A. Shevde Apr 2026

Low Latency Wake Up Of Wearable Devices, Nazih Almalki, Sumukh A. Shevde

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes techniques for improving the responsiveness of wearable devices, such as smartwatches, by predicting when a user is about to interact with the device. Often, wearable devices use a low-power co-processor to show a basic watch face while the main application processor is asleep to save battery. However, waiting for a physical touch or button press to wake the main processor can cause a noticeable and frustrating delay. The described techniques use sensors like accelerometers and gyroscopes to define an interaction zone, which is a specific physical position where the device is likely visible to the user's eye. …

Adverse Childhood Experiences And Behavioral Problems Among Hispanic Adolescents, Emily Bennett, Hugo Garcia Arreguin, Aubrey Britten, Pietra Ferreira, Seowon Song Apr 2026

Adverse Childhood Experiences And Behavioral Problems Among Hispanic Adolescents, Emily Bennett, Hugo Garcia Arreguin, Aubrey Britten, Pietra Ferreira, Seowon Song

Celebration of Research

Introduction: A growing body of research has documented the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on adolescent behavioral problems (Hunt et al., 2017; Larn et al., 2024). Children who experience greater numbers of ACEs are more likely to develop a range of behavioral problems, including aggression, anxiety, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Despite the well-established association between ACEs and later behavioral problems, less is known about the mediating role of internalizing behaviors in the link between ACEs and externalizing problems among Hispanic adolescents. Guided by Life course perspective, highlighting a developmental approach for understanding heterogeneity in individuals’ experiences and outcomes in …

Nitrous Oxide Use In Labor, Aimee Aberson, Janae Cam, Rylie Franken, Rachel Henriksen, Ben Robinson, Pam Hulstein Apr 2026

Nitrous Oxide Use In Labor, Aimee Aberson, Janae Cam, Rylie Franken, Rachel Henriksen, Ben Robinson, Pam Hulstein

Celebration of Research

Effective pain management during labor is a critical part of maternal care. It influences the mother’s physical and emotional experiences of childbirth. Epidural anesthesia and intravenous opioids are commonly used as analgesia in laboring mothers, but nitrous oxide (N₂O) has proven to be a safe, noninvasive alternative. It allows mothers to maintain mobility and consciousness while still reducing some pain perception. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project is to evaluate the effectiveness, safety, and satisfaction associated with N₂O use during active maternal labor. It reviews current literature on N₂O use during labor, focusing on maternal and neonatal safety, effectiveness …

I created a model that classifies the customers as good or bad for possible loaners. The model is XGBoost Classification model. I used as target variable the variable “default”. The target variable indicates whether the customer has previously defaulted on a loan or not. The dataset provides a representation of customer behavior and financial status. On top of that, the dataset contains detailed information about banking transactions.

Emergent Dynamics In Multiplex Social Networks: Agent-Based Modeling Of Information Diffusion For Misinformation Control, Harshvardhan Prabhakar Ghongade, Anjali Ashokrao Bhadre, Shivani Agarwal, Harjitkumar Uttamrao Pawar, Harshal Subhash Rane Apr 2026

Emergent Dynamics In Multiplex Social Networks: Agent-Based Modeling Of Information Diffusion For Misinformation Control, Harshvardhan Prabhakar Ghongade, Anjali Ashokrao Bhadre, Shivani Agarwal, Harjitkumar Uttamrao Pawar, Harshal Subhash Rane

Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)

Information misrepresentation is widespread in multi-layered social networks which provide multiple avenues to communicate information. As such, it presents significant opportunities for both information integrity and public discourse to be undermined by disinformation. This paper outlines a new agent-based model, developed to capture emergent dynamics of multi-layered social networks and to help identify technical means to mitigate information misrepresentation in complex systems. A key component of this research includes a novel Multi-Layer Information Diffusion Model (MLIDM), integrating both cross-layer communication among agents, as well as heterogeneous agent behaviors and adaptive intervention strategies. Our methods employ a three-stage process to model …
