Do We Even Know What ‘Even’ Does? A Ca Investigation, Emily Johnson
Do We Even Know What ‘Even’ Does? A Ca Investigation, Emily Johnson
Comm-entary
Emily is a Senior communication major with a Business Administration minor. She is originally from Merrimack, NH, and is planning on working in PR or something similar when she graduates in May.
What does “even” do in conversation? This study shows that when used mid-turn, “even” functions as a systematic device for intensifying stance. Analyzing naturally occurring interactions, I demonstrate how speakers use “even” to upgrade assessments, noticings, and complaints, making them more extreme or noteworthy. Recipients consistently orient to this intensification through agreement, accounts, or escalation. Even when the upgrade is left incomplete, others step in to realize it, …
Language Deprivation In Deaf Children, Kaleb Holske

Prediction Of Antidiabetic Activity Of Swietenia Mahagoni Compounds Through Pparγ Activation: Machine Learning And Molecular Docking Analysis, Weri Veranita, Siti Nurbaya
Indonesian Journal of Medical Chemistry and Bioinformatics
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder requiring long-term therapy, yet current synthetic PPARγ agonists like thiazolidinediones are often associated with serious adverse effects. Therefore, identifying natural alternatives from sources such as Swietenia mahagoni is essential to provide effective therapy with potentially lower toxicity profiles. This study employed an in silico machine learning approach using SkelSpheres descriptors to predict the IC₅₀ values of compounds derived from the seeds of Swietenia mahagoni against PPARγ, followed by molecular docking validation using Molegro Virtual Docker (MVD). The predictive model for PPARγ agonists demonstrated acceptable validity (R²-test = 0.5308; accuracy = 84.01%). …

Immobility is a significant concern given that nearly half of all hospitalized adults are immobile during their hospitalization, placing them at increased risk for adverse outcomes. As a result, it is critical for nurses to implement strategies that promote safe, structured patient mobility. Thus, the purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to determine if an educational intervention focused on patient mobility and standardized mobility tool utilization increased knowledge and confidence among nursing staff in an acute care setting. Ten participants volunteered to attend the educational intervention. The average age of the participants was 44.30 years (SD …
Judging Requires Judgment, Justin Driver
Restoring Chevron Deference By Statute, Scott Dodson
Restoring Chevron Deference By Statute, Scott Dodson
Duke Law Journal
This Essay details a solution for legislatively restoring Chevron deference: amend the APA to direct lower federal courts to give deference to reasonable agency decisions but retain nondeferential judicial review by the U.S. Supreme Court. This solution restores most of the practical benefits of Chevron by giving agencies flexibility to implement congressional policy directives with the expertise they have acquired, by maintaining stability in administrative regulation, and by relieving lower federal courts of the burdens of nondeferential review. And retaining nondeferential judicial review in the Supreme Court will preserve the constitutional role of the judicial branch to say what the …
The Missing Link Between Occupational Therapy And Hemodialysis: Program Development And Implementing Intradialytic Ot In A Rural Hospital Setting, Madison Maki
Capstone Projects
Occupational therapy (OT) has demonstrated effectiveness in supporting individuals undergoing hemodialysis, a life‑altering yet lifesaving treatment for end‑stage renal disease (ESRD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Despite this, hospitalized patients who require dialysis often receive reduced rehabilitation services due to the time‑intensive nature of dialysis and the productivity demands placed on therapists. Additionally, gaps in therapist knowledge regarding the unique functional deficits and educational needs of this population further limit service delivery.
This doctoral capstone project (DCE), conducted at Upper Peninsula Health System (UPHS), a hospital in rural Northern Michigan, addressed these barriers through the development of a comprehensive resource …

Development Of 6-Week Tier 2 Intervention Tracks Within An Elementary Mtss Framework, Maxwell Lyle
Capstone Projects
The Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is designed to provide levels of support with differing intensity that align with student needs. Tier 1 is universal instruction provided to all students in the classroom. Students who do not demonstrate adequate progress may receive Tier 2 interventions, which are primarily small-group and, when appropriate, individual interventions that are skill-specific, time-bound (6–8 weeks), and include progress monitoring. Students who do not respond to Tier 2 may require Tier 3 supports, which are intensive, individualized interventions. Many school systems lack consistent, structured Tier 2 supports, particularly in Occupational Therapy-related skills, such as fine motor …
Evaluating The Nuclear Structure Of Some Calcium Mirror Nuclei, Sukaina Falah Hassan, Ban Sabah Hameed
Evaluating The Nuclear Structure Of Some Calcium Mirror Nuclei, Sukaina Falah Hassan, Ban Sabah Hameed
Baghdad Science Journal
In this study, we calculated the binding energy of nuclei, which holds atomic nuclei together, by utilizing electron scattering transformations in the shell model to explore the nuclear structure for proton-rich pairs of mirror nuclei: 34Ca-34Si, 0Ca-35P, 36Ca-36S, and 37Ca-37Cl. The proton envelope that surrounds the proton-rich nucleus explains why the nucleus charge and its mirror image have different radii. The wave functions for single particles were adopted from the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approximation and Wood-Saxon potential to compute the mirror radii, mirror charge radii, and skin thickness for protons …

Study The Effect Of Isospin Dependence And Short-Range Correlations By Using Contact Formalism Through Inclusive Nuclear Structure For 20Ne And 24Mg Nuclei, Farah Faris Kaddoori, Ghaith N. Flaiyh
Baghdad Science Journal
Pair densities and their related correlation functions play a crucial role in capturing the complex many-body interactions within nuclear systems. This study focuses on how spin and isospin specifically influence nuclear charge density distributions. Using the folding model, the charge density is derived through an effective two-body density approach that incorporates both short-range correlations (SRC’s) and tensor correlations (TC’s), while also accounting for spin- and isospin-dependent forces. Calculations were carried out for the elastic electron scattering form factors, F(q), and the root-mean-square (RMS) charge radii, ⟨r²⟩¹ᐟ², of the ²⁰Ne and ²⁴Mg nuclei. The study also examined inelastic longitudinal electron …

We investigated the role of copy number variations (CNVs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) using genotyping data from 10,815 patients (2731 early-onset PD, EOPD) and 8901 controls from the COURAGE-PD consortium. CNVs were analyzed using a sliding window genome-wide association and burden approach. No genome-wide significant CNVs were detected in the overall cohort, but a robust deletion spanning exons 2-6 of PRKN was identified in EOPD cases, validated by MLPA, and replicated in the GP2 dataset (23,089 cases, 18,824 controls). CNV burden was significantly enriched in PD-related genes, primarily driven by PRKN, with the strongest effect observed in EOPD. PRKN CNV …

Sharks are incredibly common in the Atlantic and Gulf waters surrounding Florida. Despite the prevalent nature of these animals, little research exists on the composition of their microbial communities (or “microbiomes”). Here we aim to determine the microbial makeup of the oral environment of sharks so that we can determine if there are any bacteria of clinical significance to humans, such as being antibiotic-resistant or having elevated capability for pathogenicity. A total of 41 samples were collected from the mouths and teeth of bull, Caribbean reef, great hammerhead, lemon, nurse, and sandbar sharks caught in Southeast Florida using sterile swabs …

Edgecube -- An Iot Edge-Sensor Node For Tiny Machine Learning Applications, Nathan Gerard Timmins
Master's Theses (2009 -)
This thesis presents a novel internet-of-things (IoT) edge device, EdgeCube, a compact embedded system that combines a microcontroller unit (MCU) and a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The proposed platform explores a trade-off between the performance gains achievable through FPGA-based acceleration and the associated increases in cost and power consumption. The primary contributions of this thesis include (1) the design of a compact hybrid MCU–FPGA edge architecture intended for vision workloads, (2) a streaming MCU-to-FPGA data path using SPI for frame transfer, and (3) an end-to-end hardware prototype and evaluation on an embedded inference task. Designed for IoT vision applications, EdgeCube …

Analyzer-Less X-Ray Interferometry With Super-Resolution Methods, Murtuza S. Taqi
LSU Master's Theses
X-ray interferometry provides valuable information on attenuation, small-angle scattering, and differential phase contrast. This multi-modal contrast can aid in many clinical applications, such as lung diseases and breast cancer. However, standard inter- ferometry has an analyzer grating that can increase the dose requirement to maintain the same image quality as a standard X-ray. We propose the use of super-resolution methods for X-ray grating interferometry without an analyzer, with detectors that fail to meet the Nyquist sampling rate needed for traditional image recovery algorithms. Analysis For Predicting Surface Temperature And Combustion Of Heavy-Duty, Pre-Chamber-Enabled, Hydrogen Engines, Tony Spezia
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Hydrogen as an alternative fuel shows great promise to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from heavy duty engines. However, the challenge for hydrogen engines is that hydrogen has very different combustion properties compared to conventional hydrocarbon fuels. Hydrogen has very high flame speeds, very low ignition energy, and very wide flammability limit. These properties result in hydrogen engines being prone to abnormal combustion. Abnormal combustion makes hydrogen engines difficult to control or can cause catastrophic damage to the engine, so it is important to avoid conditions where abnormal combustion occurs. Hot spots along the combustion chamber walls are often the …
