Improving And Maintaining Public Trust In Law Enforcement: A Qualitative Case Study Of The Northville Township Police Department, Christopher Bachand
Improving And Maintaining Public Trust In Law Enforcement: A Qualitative Case Study Of The Northville Township Police Department, Christopher Bachand
Master of Public Administration Capstone Papers
Public trust is a key component of effective law enforcement. While historically cyclical, trust in American law enforcement agencies has trended downward in recent years following several high-profile use of force incidents. In response, many agencies have begun incorporating new theories and models into their policies and procedures aimed at increasing public trust. This capstone paper draws upon the relevant literature surrounding these theories and conducts a qualitative case study of the Northville Township Police Department. This agency consistently achieved above-average levels of confidence from its community members by incorporating these theories using a hybrid-synthesis policy implementation approach. This paper …
Body Worn Cameras For The Madison Police Department, Caleb Wright
Body Worn Cameras For The Madison Police Department, Caleb Wright
Master of Public Administration Capstone Papers
Body-worn cameras for law enforcement officers can ensure accountability of the officers and transparency to the public. Though body-worn cameras have become increasingly popular in police departments, some departments do not use them. The Madison Police Department is one of these departments. Body-worn cameras have been implemented with policy models in many surrounding departments in Wisconsin and have proved to hold officers accountable and ensure transparency during complaints and cases. Leveraging literature on integrated policy approach and policy implementation, this capstone paper summarizes the needs and benefits of body-worn cameras for the MPD. This paper contributes to broader debates on …
Position: The Pre/Post-Training Boundary Should Govern Ip In Industry–Academia Ml Collaborations, Dirk Bergemann, Soheil Ghili, Nitzan Mekel-Bobrov
Position: The Pre/Post-Training Boundary Should Govern Ip In Industry–Academia Ml Collaborations, Dirk Bergemann, Soheil Ghili, Nitzan Mekel-Bobrov
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Industry–academia ML collaborations routinely fail to launch—not for scientific reasons, but because academics must publish while companies must protect models trained on proprietary data, and no standard contract framework resolves this tension. Because contracts are negotiated by legal departments alone, many apparent legal disputes are incentive misalignment problems that only scientists at the table can correctly diagnose. We propose PBOS (Protect-the-Business / Open-Source-the-Science), a community-adoptable contract template anchored to a single technically-grounded boundary: pre-training artifacts (architectures, training code, benchmarks, untrained weights) are open science; post-training artifacts (weights trained on proprietary data) are business IP. This boundary is technically meaningful, legally …
Efficient Estimation In Infinite Dimensional Gmm, Jin Seo Cho, Peter C. B. Phillips
Efficient Estimation In Infinite Dimensional Gmm, Jin Seo Cho, Peter C. B. Phillips
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
In GMM estimation it is well known that if the number of moment conditions grows with the sample size, GMM asymptotics differ from the standard case with moment size fixed as the sample size tends to infinity. The present work explores infinite dimensional GMM estimation under various conditions on the moment conditions and the weight matrix. Our approach employs a partial sum process formed by the moment conditions to represent high dimensional moments and an invariance principle to capture the infinite dimensional asymptotics as the moment size grows. Next, the GMM weight matrix is assumed to converge to one of …
Regional Economic Impacts And Emission Responses Under Solar Radiation Modification, Jenny Bjordal, Evelien Van Dijk, Henri Cornec, Anthony A. Smith Jr, Trude Storelvmo
Regional Economic Impacts And Emission Responses Under Solar Radiation Modification, Jenny Bjordal, Evelien Van Dijk, Henri Cornec, Anthony A. Smith Jr, Trude Storelvmo
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) has been proposed as a potential tool to limit increases in global or regional temperatures caused by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. While previous research has extensively examined the climate system’s response to various SRM strategies, as well as their aggregate economic consequences, the regional distribution of economic impacts has received less attention. In this study, we use NorESM2–DIAM—an Earth System Model coupled to a high-resolution integrated assessment model—to assess the economic impacts, measured in GDP per capita, in an idealised SRM scenario where incoming solar radiation is reduced by 1%. Our results suggest that, relative to …
Towards A Methodology For Measuring Rental Property Ownership In The United States, Stephanie Kestelman, Rebecca Diamond, John Eric Humphries, Kate Pennington, Winnie Van Dijk, John Voorheis
Towards A Methodology For Measuring Rental Property Ownership In The United States, Stephanie Kestelman, Rebecca Diamond, John Eric Humphries, Kate Pennington, Winnie Van Dijk, John Voorheis
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Roughly one-third of U.S. households rent their homes, yet measuring who owns rental property is difficult: ownership is frequently obscured by LLCs, partnerships, and other intermediary entities that separate legal from economic control. We develop a method that traces ownership through administrative records—combining deeds and property assessments with the Census Bureau’s Business Register, IRS Schedule K-1 filings, and SEC filings on REITs—to identify ultimate owners and construct property portfolios across the full landlord size distribution. Applying the method to 11 large CBSAs, we find that individual landlords own a large majority of rental units, though their share varies meaningfully across …
Learning Through Imitation: An Experiment, Marina Agranov, Gabriel Lopez-Moctezuma, Philipp Strack, Omer Tamuz
Learning Through Imitation: An Experiment, Marina Agranov, Gabriel Lopez-Moctezuma, Philipp Strack, Omer Tamuz
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We compare how well agents aggregate information in two repeated social learning environments. In the first setting agents have access to a public data set. In the second they have access to the same data, and also to the past actions of others. Despite the fact that actions contain no additional payoff-relevant information, and despite potential herd behavior, free riding and information overload issues, observing and imitating the actions of others leads agents to take the optimal action more often in the second setting. We also investigate the effect of group size, as well as a setting in which agents …
Invoking The Senior Partner, Yoshihiko Ariizumi
Invoking The Senior Partner, Yoshihiko Ariizumi
Spiritual Proficiency
For faculty who hold religious faith, the relationship between scholarly work and divine communion is not a private afterthought but a potential cognitive and motivational resource of the first order. This article draws on ten converging theoretical frameworks in organizational psychology, positive psychology, and learning science to argue that actively seeking divine guidance through prayer — treating Heavenly Father as a Senior Partner in the research enterprise — is not a retreat from rigorous scholarship but an extension of it. We examine how practices of spiritual seeking interact with flow states, resilience, intellectual humility, and prospective thinking to produce measurable …
A Novel Approach To Creativity Assessment: Forced Pairwise Ranking With Large Language Models, Phillip R. Gregory Jr
A Novel Approach To Creativity Assessment: Forced Pairwise Ranking With Large Language Models, Phillip R. Gregory Jr
Master's Theses
Assessing creativity at scale remains a persistent challenge in cognitive science, as human raters are costly, slow, and often inconsistent in their judgments. This thesis introduced a novel framework for automated scientific creativity assessment using forced pairwise ranking, in which fine-tuned large language models compared response pairs and determined which was more creative. Five empirical studies were conducted using Llama-2-7B and Llama-2-13B models adapted via LoRA fine-tuning and benchmarked against human scored responses from the Scientific Creative Thinking Test. A regression baseline achieved Pearson = .74 on the test set, matching the human inter-rater ceiling reported in the literature. …
Advanced Integrated Practice: Holding Complexity With Integrity, Brittany Heather Mattfeld
Advanced Integrated Practice: Holding Complexity With Integrity, Brittany Heather Mattfeld
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
This professional portfolio presents an integrated approach to social work practice that holds systems-level analysis alongside relational, client-centered engagement. Drawing from graduate coursework, residential youth work, and applied program development, it examines how policy, power, and institutional structures shape lived experience within child welfare and juvenile justice systems. This work challenges the assumption that systems operate neutrally, highlighting how practices such as “voluntary” services may be experienced as coercive in application. Across core competencies—ethical practice, trauma-informed engagement, assessment and intervention, policy practice, research-informed practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration—the portfolio emphasizes that meaningful change occurs not only through structural reform, but through …
An Exploration Of Personal Grievances And Susceptibility To Terrorist Recruitment Among Aggrieved U.S. Military Members: A Scenario-Based Qualitative Study, Jose R. Munoz
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This qualitative study examined how personal, relational, and institutional experiences influenced susceptibility to terrorist recruitment among aggrieved U.S. military members. Using a scenario-based interview design grounded in the Terrorist Radicalization Assessment Protocol-18 (TRAP-18), twenty current and former service members participated in standardized, one-on-one interviews. The study aimed to identify patterns of vulnerability and resilience that emerge from experiences of marginalization, isolation, emotional distress, and moral conflict within military contexts. A deductive analytic approach combined TRAP-18 indicators with Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis to interpret how participants conceptualized grievance, belonging, and institutional trust.
Findings revealed that radicalization susceptibility does not emerge …
Latino Men’S Experience Of Dui Conviction In Imperial County: A Narrative Theory Approach, Jhonathan Fajardo
Latino Men’S Experience Of Dui Conviction In Imperial County: A Narrative Theory Approach, Jhonathan Fajardo
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
According to California Department of Justice data, Latino drivers accounted for the largest share of any racial or ethnic group for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) arrests. Latino men are disproportionately affected by DUI arrests and alcohol-related harms in California, yet little is known about how they themselves understand and navigate life after a DUI. This study examines Latino men’s narratives of life before, during, and after a DUI conviction. Prior scholarship has largely relied on quantitative data to show that Latino men are overrepresented in DUI statistics. What remains underexplored are Latino men’s first-person, culturally grounded narratives of what …
Haunting As Heritage: Mapping The Interior And Indigenous Ghosts, Koda L. Animkii
Haunting As Heritage: Mapping The Interior And Indigenous Ghosts, Koda L. Animkii
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Within Stephen Graham Jones’ novella Mapping the Interior, the connections between history and identity are analyzed and emphasized through the exploration of identity formation and the impacts of settler colonialism on the self. These connections are heightened through the novella’s use of horror, as the rhetoric of the normative and monstrous within the genre holds the potential for both resistance and oppression. Looking at the genre of horror as a whole, and at the subgenres of ghost stories and hauntings more specifically, the shifting structures of the Self and the Other as established by Robin Wood’s “An Introduction to …
Factors Contributing To The Effectiveness Of Reentry Programs For Formerly Incarcerated Adults, William Lopez Jr, Falina Rose Gonzales
Factors Contributing To The Effectiveness Of Reentry Programs For Formerly Incarcerated Adults, William Lopez Jr, Falina Rose Gonzales
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Reentry into society following incarceration represents a critical transition that significantly influences long-term stability and recidivism outcomes. Formerly incarcerated adults frequently encounter structural barriers related to housing, employment, behavioral health access, and social reintegration, highlighting the need for effective reentry programming. The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine factors that contribute to the effectiveness of community-based reentry programs for formerly incarcerated adults and to understand how participants and service providers perceive successful reintegration outcomes. Guided by ecological systems theory and empowerment theory, this study employs a qualitative phenomenological design using semi-structured interviews with approximately 15 formerly incarcerated adults …
Effects Of Weight Loss Medications In Combination With Psychotropic Medications, Emily A. Hoffman
Effects Of Weight Loss Medications In Combination With Psychotropic Medications, Emily A. Hoffman
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Background and aims: The obesity epidemic has been well-documented and weight loss medications are becoming increasingly popular. Patients with psychiatric conditions often suffer metabolic side effects from psychotropic medications and are often prescribed weight loss medications to mitigate these side effects. When treating patients on these medications concurrently, understanding their potential side effects is essential for developing an effective care plan. Registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs), pharmacists, and mental health professionals working in mental health facilities should be aware of these potential side effects to better care for their patients.
Methods: After completing a thorough literature review, a handbook …
Raising Resilient Children: Parent Video Guide To Support Children’S Emotional Development, Perla F. Nunez-Chavez
Raising Resilient Children: Parent Video Guide To Support Children’S Emotional Development, Perla F. Nunez-Chavez
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Social-emotional learning (SEL) in early childhood plays a critical role in
children’s ability to recognize emotions, regulate behavior, build relationships,
and succeed in academic settings. During the preschool years (ages 3–5),
children experience rapid emotional development and rely heavily on parents for
co-regulation, emotional modeling, and guidance. Research consistently shows
that when parents engage in emotion coaching practices, such as labeling
feelings, validating emotions, and modeling regulation strategies, children
demonstrate stronger emotional competence and improved developmental
outcomes. However, despite strong evidence supporting parent involvement in
SEL, many existing interventions are delivered through structured, in-person
programs that are often inaccessible to …
The Effects Of Lgbtq+ Inclusive Education On High School Students, Cristal Dirzo, Lizzette A. Padilla
The Effects Of Lgbtq+ Inclusive Education On High School Students, Cristal Dirzo, Lizzette A. Padilla
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Many schools across the United States exclude LGBTQ+ topics from required curriculum, which limits a student’s understanding of diverse identities and underrepresents marginalized communities in the world. The absence of LGBTQ+ topics in education may impact levels of inclusivity within school culture as well as student attitudes towards LGBTQ+ individuals. While past research has focused on teacher perspectives and barriers to implementing LGBTQ+ topics in classrooms, little research has explored the student outcomes and perspectives on how LGBTQ+ inclusive curriculum influences their attitudes and perceptions of inclusivity within school culture. This study examines how LGBTQ+ inclusive education affects 9th-grade high …
Game On! Level Up Your Teaching: A Digital Game-Based Learning Guide For Preschool Teachers, Scarlett Flores Marin

Although digital game-based learning (DGBL) has emerged as a
promising technological advancement in early childhood education by offering
many developmental benefits for children, its effective implementation remains a
challenge. The integration of digital technologies in early childhood education has
led to the growing use of DGBL as an effective instructional approach with
research indicating that well-designed educational apps and games can enhance
young children’s cognitive, literacy, and social development by promoting active,
meaningful, and interactive learning experiences. DGBL encourages problem-
solving, critical thinking, and collaboration, aligning with how children naturally
learn through exploration and engagement. When used intentionally, technology

Understanding The Impact Of Childhood Trauma On Recidivism Among Justice-Involved Youth, Jasmine Valencia, Karina V. Garcia, Genaro Fabela
Understanding The Impact Of Childhood Trauma On Recidivism Among Justice-Involved Youth, Jasmine Valencia, Karina V. Garcia, Genaro Fabela
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are especially common among youth involved in the juvenile justice system, and research has consistently linked these early traumatic experiences to a variety of negative behavioral and developmental outcomes. Still, we do not fully understand how strongly cumulative ACE exposure predicts whether detained youth will reoffend, or whether trauma-informed rehabilitation programs can help reduce that risk. This proposed quantitative study explores the relationship between ACE scores and recidivism among youth ages 11–18 detained at the San Bernardino County Juvenile Detention Center. Grounded in trauma theory and ecological systems theory, the study focuses on two primary questions: …

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Black young men are overrepresented in the juvenile justice system, yet limited research has examined how severe custody experiences are related to mental health in adulthood. This study will examine how the severity of juvenile custody experiences is related to adult mental health outcomes among Black men who have been released from custody for at least two years. Being able to understand these long-term outcomes is important for addressing disparities in mental health and access to care. This research will utilize the principles of trauma theory and will use a quantitative cross-sectional design. The study will use a purposive snowball …

Easy Travel-Friendly Snack Recipes For College Students To Support Mental Well-Being, Lidia Vides
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
College is a pivotal period in life of a young adult, marked by newfound independence, increased responsibilities, heightened academic pressure, and significant changes in daily routine. While this transition can often be exciting for a young adult, it also presents many different challenges. As a result, many students experience increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Nutrition plays a powerful yet often overlooked role in supporting mental and physical health. Current research studies show that a balanced diet rich in whole food ingredients can help regulate mood and promote emotional well-being through multiple biological pathways. However, despite this knowledge, convenient, …

Previous research is primarily quantitative, focused on male subjects outside the United States, and has not explored the impact of smartphone use on relationships from the perspective of close friends and family. This study addresses the gap by applying qualitative methodologies using a more balanced gender sample in the United States. Semi-structured interviews will capture participants’ experiences and perceptions of how excessive smartphone use affects their interpersonal relationships. Open-ended questions will explore smartphone use patterns, the …
Barriers To Healthcare In Lgbtq+ Baby Boomers, Kellie Jones, Alexandra Lomeli, Bryant Vargas
Barriers To Healthcare In Lgbtq+ Baby Boomers, Kellie Jones, Alexandra Lomeli, Bryant Vargas
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
LGBTQ+ Baby Boomers have experienced decades of discrimination, societal suppression, and exclusion from equitable healthcare. Despite advancement in recent years, healthcare disparities persist, and past experiences of discrimination may contribute to present-day barriers in accessing quality care. Existing research often neglects the intersectionality of aging, sexual orientation, and identity, leaving a gap in understanding the long-term effects of historical trauma on healthcare access for this population.
This quantitative study seeks to answer the question: How does the historical trauma experienced by the LGBTQ+ Baby Boomer population impact the healthcare barriers they face? This study proposes to examine the relationship of …
Overcoming Obstacles: Exploring Mental Health Service Barriers For Immigrants And The Impact Of Acculturation, Mallory Manahan, Joyce Guevara
Overcoming Obstacles: Exploring Mental Health Service Barriers For Immigrants And The Impact Of Acculturation, Mallory Manahan, Joyce Guevara
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Immigrants are faced with various challenges as they adjust to a new life in a foreign country and undergo acculturation. The acculturative stressors experienced by immigrants increase the risk of mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Yet, mental health services are underutilized by the immigrant population despite a high need for mental health support. The underutilization of mental health services can be attributed to barriers like stigma, language barriers, and a lack of culturally competent care. This study explores the acculturation impacts on immigrant mental health and identifies the barriers to accessing mental health services to gain a deeper …

Anti- Intellectualism, Authenticity, And Intellectual Authority In Short-Form Digital Discourse, Mariaisabel Sandoval
Anti- Intellectualism, Authenticity, And Intellectual Authority In Short-Form Digital Discourse, Mariaisabel Sandoval
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This thesis examines how anti-intellectualism, authenticity, and credibility intersect in digital discourse. In contemporary online environments, expertise is increasingly treated with suspicion, while relatability, emotional immediacy, and personal conviction often function as alternative markers of trustworthiness. Under these conditions, intellectual expression may become socially risky, particularly in spaces where speakers must appear authentic without seeming overly serious, pretentious, or out of touch. This study asks how credibility and authority are performed, negotiated, and contested in short-form digital discourse, and how sincerity is reshaped when authenticity itself becomes a rhetorical performance.
This project is grounded in scholarship on anti-intellectualism, platform culture, …
Can Carpobrotus Edulis Cause Significant Changes To The Soil Microbiome?, Samantha J. Cowan
Can Carpobrotus Edulis Cause Significant Changes To The Soil Microbiome?, Samantha J. Cowan
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Invasive species cause significant damage to ecosystem biodiversity and can cost billions of dollars to restore native species (Van der Wal et al, 2008; Diagne et al., 2021). In certain instances, even if the invasive species are removed, they can leave legacy effects on the environment that make restoration more challenging (Conser and Connor, 2008; Elgersma et al., 2011). Carpobrotus edulis is an invasive species of plant that is known to cause changes to its environment such as affecting the soil nitrogen cycle and the pH, potentially leading to persistent changes in the soil microbiome and causing native species to …

Structural Erasure And Suicide Risk: The Impact Of Gender Misrecognition And Institutional Nonsupport On Incarcerated Transgender Adults In California, Julliana Lex Alcala, Allyza Rae Roxas
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Incarcerated transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals experience disproportionately high rates of suicide risk, and correctional environments may intensify minority stress through institutional misrecognition, discrimination, victimization, and restricted access to gender-affirming care. Despite protective policy reforms such as Senate Bill 132, limited research have examined how structural practices shape suicidal ideation among incarcerated TGD populations. This study will investigate how denial of gender-affirming recognition and staff support contributes to suicidal ideation among incarcerated TGD adults in California state prisons. From the perspective of the Gender Minority Stress framework, this study will use a convergent mixed-methods design to examine both statistical relationships …

A total of 189 students [M age (SD) = 20.29 + 1.46 years] from a mid-sized university in the U.S. responded to an anonymous online survey. The survey consisted of questions regarding food security, hydration/beverage status, demographics, disordered eating attitudes and behaviors, and food consumption patterns. Findings indicated a low prevalence of severe disordered eating behaviors within this sample. However, attitudes about disordered eating …
What Is Transitional Care And Its Role In Reducing Readmissions, Decia Rodriguez
What Is Transitional Care And Its Role In Reducing Readmissions, Decia Rodriguez
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Thirty-day readmissions to hospitals creates significant clinical and financial burdens in healthcare systems and worsens patient outcomes. This project reviews transitional care programs as strategic interventions to minimize preventable readmission with a specific focus on pharmacist-led medication reconciliation. Due to the extensive literature review, this work proves that structured transitional care is effective in closing the gaps between acute hospital care and home-based recovery because it coordinates medication management, patient education, and follow-up care. As it has been shown, pharmacists are in a central position to minimize medication errors and enhance compliance, especially in chronic patients such as those with …
