Motives And Methodologies For Improving 3d Displays, Dylan Charles Barton Dec 2023

Motives And Methodologies For Improving 3d Displays, Dylan Charles Barton

Theses and Dissertations

This work contains two key contributions to the development of 3D displays. First a successful exploratory human trial research study. By comparing multiple real displays in human trials, the factors of ease of use, time, and accuracy were able to be examined in a general setting, instead of isolated to only a specific type of 3D display. These human tests showed that 3D displays in general offer better ease of use and accuracy compared to 2D displays when showing 3D media. This differs from previous studies where only a single display was examined or theoretical papers discussing factors on paper. …

Cross-Cultural Dyads In The Psychotherapy Room, Sebastian Del Corral Winder, Katrina Spontak, Mixalis Poulakis

Midwest Social Sciences Journal

Therapeutic outcome is often impacted by the psychotherapeutic relationship throughout treatment. These outcomes are mediated by the client’s belief in the psychotherapist’s trust, comfort, and competency while navigating mental health concerns. Cultural differences can impact a client’s perspective on all three factors and thus impact the psychotherapeutic relationship and success of treatment. The Accent Prestige Theory has noted that individuals who speak English with a Latin American Spanish accent are perceived as less competent, friendly, and trustworthy by White individuals in the United States. While this theory has been examined in select contexts, there is no previous work related to …

Pathway Centric Analysis For Single-Cell Rna-Seq And Spatial Transcriptomics Data With Gsdensity, Qingnan Liang, Yuefan Huang, Shan He, Ken Chen

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Advances in single-cell technology have enabled molecular dissection of heterogeneous biospecimens at unprecedented scales and resolutions. Cluster-centric approaches are widely applied in analyzing single-cell data, however they have limited power in dissecting and interpreting highly heterogenous, dynamically evolving data. Here, we present GSDensity, a graph-modeling approach that allows users to obtain pathway-centric interpretation and dissection of single-cell and spatial transcriptomics (ST) data without performing clustering. Using pathway gene sets, we show that GSDensity can accurately detect biologically distinct cells and reveal novel cell-pathway associations ignored by existing methods. Moreover, GSDensity, combined with trajectory analysis can identify curated pathways that are …

Additionally, 5% sainfoin was added to the sugar …

Spacs And The Macroeconomy: An Empirical Examination Of Real Interest Rates' Impact On Spacs, Ryan A. Jacobs Dec 2023

Spacs And The Macroeconomy: An Empirical Examination Of Real Interest Rates' Impact On Spacs, Ryan A. Jacobs

Doctoral Dissertations (DBA)

Special Purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) are an alternative way private entities enter public markets through reverse merger of a publicly listed pool of capital. Price discovery is more transparent than the traditional IPO process, as valuations are negotiated between the SPAC Sponsor and the firm’s management team before shareholders approve through a shareholder vote. I conducted an OLS regression test for a relationship between SPAC activity, using capital invested in SPAC IPOs as a proxy, and various macroeconomic variables. I did not find evidence of a linear relationship. I examined the impact of the real interest rates on monthly pre-merger …

Subdural empyema is a collection of pus in the subdural space between the dura mater and the arachnoid. It carries very high morbidity and mortality as it can spread anywhere in the brain; however, the risk can be mitigated with appropriate surgical and medical intervention. Being protected by the skull, cranial infections are usually preceded by a significant risk factor, either an external invader such as skull fractures secondary to trauma, penetrating injury, prior surgery, or, more commonly, in more than 50% of cases, due to spread of an internal infection such as ear or sinus infections. A Bacille Calmette–Guérin (BCG) is still the only licensed vaccine for the prevention of tuberculosis, providing limited protection against Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in adulthood. New advances in the delivery of DNA vaccines by electroporation have been made in the past decade. We evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of the DNA-hsp65 vaccine administered by intramuscular electroporation (EP) in cynomolgus macaques. Animals received three doses of DNA-hsp65 at 30-day intervals. We demonstrated that intramuscular electroporated DNA-hsp65 vaccine immunization of cynomolgus macaques was safe, and there were no vaccine-related effects on hematological, renal, or hepatic profiles, compared to the pre-vaccination parameters. No tuberculin …

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) In Wildfire Smoke Accumulate On Indoor Materials And Create Post-Smoke Event Exposure Pathways, Aurélie Laguerre, Elliott T. Gall

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Wildfire smoke contains PAHs that, after infiltrating indoors, accumulate on indoor materials through particle deposition and partitioning from air. We report the magnitude and persistence of select surface associated PAHs on three common indoor materials: glass, cotton, and mechanical air filter media. Materials were loaded with PAHs through both spiking with standards and exposure to a wildfire smoke proxy. Loaded materials were aged indoors over ~4 months to determine PAH persistence. For materials spiked with standards, total PAH decay rates were 0.010±0.002, 0.025±0.005, and 0.051±0.009 d -1 , for mechanical air filter media, glass, and cotton, respectively. PAH decay on …

Vodka2: A Fast And Accurate Method To Detect Non-Standard Viral Genomes From Large Rna-Seq Data Sets, Emna Achouri, Sébastien A Felt, Matthew Hackbart, Nicole S Rivera-Espinal, Carolina B López

2020-Current year OA Pubs

During viral replication, viruses carrying an RNA genome produce non-standard viral genomes (nsVGs), including copy-back viral genomes (cbVGs) and deletion viral genomes (delVGs), that play a crucial role in regulating viral replication and pathogenesis. Because of their critical roles in determining the outcome of RNA virus infections, the study of nsVGs has flourished in recent years, exposing a need for bioinformatic tools that can accurately identify them within next-generation sequencing data obtained from infected samples. Here, we present our data analysis pipeline, Viral Opensource DVG Key Algorithm 2 (VODKA2), that is optimized to run on a parallel computing environment for …

Nursing Care Of The Pediatric Patient With Autism, Cayley Frolik

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this project is to help educate current and future nurses on ways to understand and better connect with pediatric patients with autism. Standard nursing curriculum tends to focus primarily on the clinical approach for mainstream patients. In one short year, I recognized a glaring need for nurses to learn how to care for those with autism, as well as how to support and educate their families to create the best environment for whole success. It is very difficult to understand the needs of these specific patients without the proper toolkit. It is my intention to research and …

Indigenous Self-Determination In Co-Production Of Knowledge, Margaret Hope Rudolf

Anthropology

Analyzing and comprehending co-production of knowledge (CPK) in the context of working with Arctic Indigenous communities on climate change research is the main goal for this interdisciplinary doctoral dissertation. CPK is shared decision-making on every step of the research process with research partners from communities, agencies, or organizations. CPK with Arctic Indigenous communities requires dedicated consideration of equity, ethics, cultural worldviews, and colonization. Key concepts from Indigenous critical methodologies are used to analyze both the CPK theory and implementation. CPK has the potential to be an ethical space to question the status quo of research processes and support Indigenous self-determination. …

Exploring The Robustness Of A Surrogate-Based Ice Flow Model Calibration, Kyle Blum Dec 2023

Exploring The Robustness Of A Surrogate-Based Ice Flow Model Calibration, Kyle Blum

Physics

When simulating ice sheets using numerical models, model parameters have a great impact on the ice flow, velocity, and response to external forces, making them key factors in accurately predicting ice sheet behavior. In order to have confidence in modeled predictions of ice sheets, we must first have confidence in the physical models we use to simulate them. In order to have confidence in these physical models, we must first have confidence in our calibrations of these ice dynamics parameters. Researchers have been training neural networks to emulate expensive ice sheet models. These surrogate ice sheet models are designed to …

Environmental And Biotic Habitat Attributes Affect Rocky Intertidal Community Variability In Glacially Influenced Estuaries, Madeleine G. Mcarthur

Marine Biology

Climate change is increasing the rate of glacial recession in high latitude coastal environments. The associated increase in cold, sediment-laden freshwater into the nearshore may alter a wide array of water attributes, which will likely have ecosystem-wide impacts. One of these potential impacts is a change in typical levels of ecological community variability, which can be an indicator of stress in response to an environmental impact. Fluctuation in community composition over time is natural and can be affected by environmental conditions, as well as by the presence of habitat forming, spatially dominant organisms. The goal of this study was to …

Avian Divergence And Speciation Across Beringia Examined Using Comparative Mitogenomics, K. A. Collier

Biological Sciences

Accurate knowledge of divergence and speciation processes is critical for understanding key aspects of biodiversity. As a well-known, speciose group of vertebrates, an increased understanding of how birds diverge and speciate allows us to better manage extant avian diversity and understand how it develops over time. Additionally, birds often exhibit complex and variable patterns of divergence, resulting in complexes of taxonomic uncertainty. Filling gaps in our knowledge of divergence across time and space increases our ability to correctly identify and understand not just avian diversity but clade-level patterns in speciation processes. These higher-order findings give us tools to compare and …

Movement Ecology, Survival, And Territorial Dynamics In Canada Lynx (Lynx Canadensis) Over A Cyclic Population Decline, Derek Arnold Dec 2023

Movement Ecology, Survival, And Territorial Dynamics In Canada Lynx (Lynx Canadensis) Over A Cyclic Population Decline, Derek Arnold

Biological Sciences

As the quintessential predator-prey cycle, research into Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) and snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) have led to many discoveries in population biology; however, much remains unknown about the nuances of their populations. In this dissertation, I examined the ways in which population cycles influence survival, reproduction, territoriality, and connectivity. First, I examined ways in which climate change induced shifts in fire regimes have affected lynx persistence in their current refugia. Lynx mainly sought out areas of higher hare density and lower cover, such as intermediately aged coniferous and deciduous forests. This type of forest was predicted to persist …

When Beavers Get Burned, Do Fish Get Fried? The Role Of Beavers To Mediate Wildfire Effects On Arctic Grayling In Boreal Alaska, William T. Samuel Dec 2023

When Beavers Get Burned, Do Fish Get Fried? The Role Of Beavers To Mediate Wildfire Effects On Arctic Grayling In Boreal Alaska, William T. Samuel

Fisheries

Wildfire is a dominant natural disturbance process throughout boreal North America and fires are increasing in size, frequency, and severity. However, little is known about how wildfire affects boreal fish populations and aquatic habitat despite the substantial impacts of fire on ecosystem processes, and even less is known about how fire effects are mediated by species interactions. For example, North American Beavers (Castor canadensis) are affected by and can influence wildfire dynamics, and their engineering has complex effects on aquatic habitats. North American Beavers therefore have the potential to mediate wildfire effects on aquatic ecosystems and fish populations. Here I …

Relative Abundance And Movement Ecology Of Tiger Sharks Galeocerdo Cuvier In The Waters Surrounding Bimini, The Bahamas, Matthew J. Smukall

Fisheries

Shark populations are under increased anthropogenic pressures around the world. Large-bodied shark species are upper trophic level predators, and therefore there is concern that declining numbers of sharks may have significant implications for ecosystems. In response to these conservation concerns there has been increased focus on the implementation of regulations, fishery management plans, national plans of action, and marine management zones in some nations. However, large sharks are often highly mobile and can move readily across jurisdictional boundaries. Therefore, there is a need to monitor long-term relative abundances within regions and simultaneously examine the duration to which species remain in …

Exploring Competing Gold System Models In The Valdez Creek Region, Clearwater Mountains, Alaska, Jane Marguerite Suhey

Geosciences

Gold deposits located within the accretionary and subduction-related tectonic environment of south-central Alaska are interpreted to have formed via devolatilization of hydrous assemblages through regional metamorphism (orogenic model) or by intrusion-related hydrothermal processes (intrusion-related gold system model). The Valdez Creek mining district is located in the southern Clearwater Mountains of south-central Alaska along the intermontane-insular belt suture of the North American Cordillera. The 67-56 Ma south-vergent Valdez Creek shear zone resulted in the thrusting of North American-derived Maclaren schist (intermontane) structurally above lower greenschist-facies rocks of the Clearwater metasediments (Insular). The ~ 5km thick ductile shear zone preserves a complete …

Can The Faculty Reform Intercollegiate Athletics? A Past, Present, And Future Perspective, Bradley David Ridpath

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

The subject of academic corruption in intercollegiate athletics has been of significant concern and empirical inquiry for over 100 years. There are many character and ethical issues that pervade intercollegiate athletics such as academic fraud, cheating in recruiting, sense of entitlements, illegal inducements from boosters, and academic fraud. The author makes an argument that many of the problems relating to the culture of college sports and character development cannot be repaired without changing the culture with regard to academics and academic integrity. The faculty driven movement toward academic integrity in college sports is explored, along with the efforts of outside …

The Constitutional Public Trust In A Warming World, Sean Lyness Dec 2023

The Constitutional Public Trust In A Warming World, Sean Lyness

Pace Environmental Law Review

The public trust doctrine—a state-specific doctrine that entrusts certain natural resources to the state to hold for the public—most often exists as a common law doctrine. But a handful of states have constitutionalized their version of the public trust. A growing body of jurisprudential evidence shows the constitutional public trust in action—or not—against climate change. This Article examines these cases brought by governmental plaintiffs—states and local governments—investigating whether constitutionalizing the public trust has made a difference. Although the results are nascent, early signs suggest that a constitutional public trust can result in more comprehensive and aggressive law- suits when wielded …
