Impacts Of Wildfire On Subcanopy Energy Balance, Thermal Regime, And Permafrost Stability In Peat Plateaus At Scotty Creek, Canada, Maude Auclair
Impacts Of Wildfire On Subcanopy Energy Balance, Thermal Regime, And Permafrost Stability In Peat Plateaus At Scotty Creek, Canada, Maude Auclair
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The stability of permafrost in peatland-dominated regions of northwestern Canada is compromised by ongoing climate warming and increased wildfire activity. This study examines an 8-year record of changes to the surface and subsurface properties of a peat plateau following a low-severity wildfire that occurred in 2014 in a region of thawing, discontinuous permafrost. This is accomplished by comparing the burned portion of a peat plateau to two unburned control sites, one of which is the unburned portion of the same plateau that was affected by the fire. Net radiation was not significantly different one year following the wildfire but became …
Is Trust A Zero-Sum Game? What Happens When Institutional Sources Get It Wrong, Andrew Dawson
Is Trust A Zero-Sum Game? What Happens When Institutional Sources Get It Wrong, Andrew Dawson
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, trust in mainstream institutions is on the decline while people are increasingly turning to alternative media and conspiracy theories. Previous research has suggested that these trends may be linked, but the exact nature of the relationship is unclear. In a fractured informational environment, is trust a neutral process, where each source is judged independently, or is it in fact a zero-sum competition, where a loss for one side is a gain for the other? Across three experimental studies (N = 2,951) we examined how people react when a source makes a serious error, …
Parental Evaluations And Choice Of Math Apps For Their Young Children: Exploring The Impact Of Individual Differences, Nicola Urquhart
Parental Evaluations And Choice Of Math Apps For Their Young Children: Exploring The Impact Of Individual Differences, Nicola Urquhart
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Well-designed math apps can have positive effects on young children’s math abilities (Bang et al., 2023; Griffith et al., 2019; Outhwaite et al., 2023), but research indicates that many commercially available math apps are not well designed (Dubé et al., 2019; Meyer et al., 2021). Studies also find that parents struggle to identify relevant features from app store descriptions (Montazami et al., 2022; Pearson et al., 2023). The purpose of the present research was to investigate how parents evaluate the apps themselves, and to test whether individual differences can affect parental app evaluations and decisions. In two parts of Study …
Recoloring In Hereditary Graph Classes: Structure And Decomposition, Manoj Belavadi
Recoloring In Hereditary Graph Classes: Structure And Decomposition, Manoj Belavadi
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
In this thesis we study reconfiguration problems in graph theory. A reconfiguration problem is generally defined on the solution space of a problem for which a configuration can be defined as a feasible solution, for example, a coloring of a graph. In Chapters 1 through 4 we study the reconfiguration of vertex colorings. The reconfiguration graph of the k-colorings, denoted Rk(G), is the graph whose vertices are the k-colorings of G and two colorings are adjacent in Rk(G) if they differ on exactly one vertex. The basic question investigated here …

Toward A More Inclusive English Major: Current Realities, Especially For Students From The Black Diaspora In The United States, Isabelle L. N. Belice
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
This paper aims to research the inclusivity of the English major. This paper will answer whether the major is inclusive, specifically for students from the Black diaspora in the United States, through the use of multiple sources. My paper focuses on four subtopics: the lack of diversity among materials used in English courses, the treatment of Black culture in the classroom, projected salaries after graduation, and lack of general knowledge about the English major. Through my research, my paper will assess the inclusivity of the English major and propose solutions to this problem based on my personal experiences and the …
Collateral Consequences And The Bars Outside Of Incarceration: An Assessment Of Massachusetts State Policies Surrounding Reentry, Nisa Rivera
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
How do Massachusetts policies impose collateral consequences for people with felony convictions and/or periods of incarceration? Previous research shows that having some form of a criminal record can make it harder to obtain housing, employment, and other sectors of life. Research was conducted to examine how Massachusetts policies restrict access to necessary resources that would otherwise allow returning citizens to become self-sufficient. Assessments were made regarding civic engagement, housing, higher education, employment, occupational licensing, and government assistance. The presence of a collateral consequence was based on whether a felony conviction was taken into consideration or served as a disqualifier, whether …

Holding States Accountable: An Analytical Review Of Reintegrative Laws, Policies And Programs For Felons And Ex-Offenders, Samira Kerkach
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
It is past due that states and the federal government take accountability for the gaps in reintegration of felons into society and begin seeking justice for these communities. In an overview of the political marginalization of criminal felony offenders, Leonor (2022) asserts that because of the significant impact of felon disenfranchisement laws on Black Americans, it is evident that this issue is complicated and proportions on racialized lines, meaning that modern felon disenfranchisement laws disproportionately affect communities of color, and therefore dilutes the political power of these underrepresented communities. There are more barriers to the successful reintegration of felons besides …

It is common knowledge that the criminal justice system is fallible and prone to human error. The most egregious of such errors is the conviction of an innocent person. While wrongful convictions have been acknowledged in Canada in the last few decades, they are mostly regarded as rare and extraordinary events.16 In response to this perception, experts have identified the challenge of determining the number of wrongful convictions and their exact causes.17 A 2019 study estimates that at least 85 people have been exonerated in Canada.18 The recent advent of the Canadian Registry of Wrongful Convictions creates a centralized location …
Administrative Procedures As Tax Enforcement Tools, Wei Cui, Jeff Hicks, Michael Wiebe
Administrative Procedures As Tax Enforcement Tools, Wei Cui, Jeff Hicks, Michael Wiebe
All Faculty Publications
We study how common administrative procedures affect firm tax evasion. We begin with the counter-intuitive observation that many firms bunch above, rather than below, large notches in China’s corporate income tax. Cross-sectional patterns suggest that administrative procedures in the prepayment and refund system served as de facto enforcement tools that prevented some firms from accessing the reduced tax rates below the notches. Following a regulatory reform that eliminated these procedures, bunching below the notches increased dramatically. The results imply a tradeoff between reducing administrative barriers and allowing much taxpayer non-compliance in low-compliance environments.
Evaluation Of The Physicochemical Properties And Soil Biogeochemistry Of Fire Residues, Lingqun Zeng
Evaluation Of The Physicochemical Properties And Soil Biogeochemistry Of Fire Residues, Lingqun Zeng
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Wildland fire is a main driving force in the Earth system and affects ecosystem properties and processes across spatio-temporal scales. The burning of biomass and production of solid fire residues (conventionally termed fire ash) that are a mixture of completely and incompletely burned materials (inorganic ash and pyrogenic carbon), represent the direct and prominent changes by fires. Cycling of the fire residues is an integral component of elemental cycles and can mediate other biogeochemical processes.
This dissertation aims to fill important knowledge gaps in understanding the disturbance of wildland fires to biogeochemical processes in soils. First, this work characterized and …
Gender And Nostalgia In Period Drama: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel And Mad Men, Deidre Pribram
Gender And Nostalgia In Period Drama: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel And Mad Men, Deidre Pribram
Communications: Faculty Publications
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017-2023) and Mad Men (2007-2015) share a common genre, location, and era. Both are period dramas, set in New York City, as the waning 1950s transition into the 1960s. Additionally, both television serials address changing cultural conditions, especially surrounding gender. Yet, when analyzed through the prism of nostalgia, the two programs deviate in significant ways. This essay uses Grainge’s (2000) distinction between nostalgia as mood and nostalgia as aesthetic style, applying it to the two television serials. It also incorporates concepts of nostalgia as critique (Cook, 2005), as well as imagined nostalgia as the longing “for …

Plasmids are mobile genetic elements known to carry secondary metabolic genes that affect the fitness and survival of microbes in the environment. Well-studied cases of plasmidencoded secondary metabolic genes in marine habitats include toxin/antitoxin and antibiotic biosynthesis/resistance genes. Here, we examine metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from the permanently-stratified water column of the Cariaco Basin for integrated plasmids that encode biosynthetic gene clusters of secondary metabolites (smBGCs). We identify 16 plasmid-borne smBGCs in MAGs associated primarily with Planctomycetota and Pseudomonadota that encode terpenesynthesizing genes, and genes for production of ribosomal and non-ribosomal peptides. These identified genes encode for secondary metabolites that are …

Introduction (To Emotional Expressionism), E. Deidre Pribram Ph.D.
Communications: Faculty Publications
The primary purpose of Emotional Expressionism: Television Serialization, The Melodramatic Mode, and Socioemotionality is to explore the forms, functions, and nuances of emotions in popular, mediated narratives. Clearly, emotions constitute a key means by which audiences experience and make sense of narrative media, in that mediated stories make compelling arguments or take up resonant positions through their emotional methods and meanings. The value of developing an emotional template for screen media lies in generating new analytical and interpretative approaches to narrative aesthetics, especially in terms of their pains and pleasures. As this study seeks to demonstrate, emotional analysis opens up …
Education And Religion In Shaping Support For Same-Sex Relations: Considering Differences Over Time And Across Geographical Areas, Amy Adamczyk, Ashely French
Education And Religion In Shaping Support For Same-Sex Relations: Considering Differences Over Time And Across Geographical Areas, Amy Adamczyk, Ashely French
Publications and Research
Across the world, attitudes about same-sex relationships have become rapidly more supportive. While education is typically viewed as a liberalizing force, religious beliefs are often seen as restricting more tolerant perspectives and contributing to more conservative attitudes in general. Focusing on the United States this study examines the roles of religion and education, as individual and group properties, for understanding disapproval of same-sex relationships. Drawing on restricted information that makes it possible to identify where General Social Survey respondents lived, we find that graduating from college is associated with more support, but has less of an effect on Evangelicals and …

Given the significant impact of healthcare stock changes on the global economy, including its GDP and other financial factors, we endeavored to create an analytical prediction model for forecasting the annual percentage change of these stocks. Our model, which is nonlinear, incorporates five key discoveries. We focused on predicting the average weekly closing price (pWCP) of AbbVie Inc. (North Chicago, IL, USA)'s healthcare stock (ABBV) from 1 August 2017 to 31 December 2019. The stock was chosen based on the low beta risk, high dividend yield, and high yearly percentage return criteria. Alongside predicting the weekly stock price, our model …
Wise Blood Through The Lens Of Reader Response Theory, Hannah Rose Horton Stewart
Wise Blood Through The Lens Of Reader Response Theory, Hannah Rose Horton Stewart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Flannery O’Connor’s 1952 novel, Wise Blood, is a frequently misunderstood classic. While O’Connor is very rarely associated with reader response theory, its framework offers a way to more fully appreciate O’Connor as an author and Wise Blood as a novel while addressing aspects of critics’ confusion. The objective of this study is to consider a previously under-researched area of O’Connor scholarship while offering greater clarity to Wise Blood. By considering O’Connor’s personal nonfiction writing and the text of her first novel through the lens of reader response scholars such as Wolfgang Iser, this study offers a call towards viewing …

Coastal areas are the most biologically productive and undoubtedly among the most complex ecosystems. Algae are responsible for most of the gross primary production in these coastal regions. However, despite the critical importance of algae for the global ecosystem, the biodiversity of many algal groups is understudied, partially due to the high complexity of morphologically identifying algal species. The current study aimed to take advantage of the recently developed technology for biotic community assessment through the high-throughput sequencing (HTS) of environmental DNA (eDNA), known as the “eDNA metabarcoding”, to characterize littoral algal communities in the Northern Gulf of Mexico (NGoM). …

Digital light processing (DLP) is renowned for its precision, but the challenge lies in the identification of optimal print parameters to minimise print errors and enhance overall print accuracy. This study introduces a groundbreaking approach by integrating 'Random Forest' (RF) models with DLP printing to construct a predictive model for printing errors to achieve unparalleled precision. We conducted experiments using common commercial resins to print, resulting in a comprehensive dataset of 690 experimental datasets. Consequently, we validated this approach by fabricating Y-type microfluidic structures with a minimum feature size printing of 2 µm and herringbone mixer structures with feature sizes …

A breastfeeding-friendly city is one where there is an enabling environment to support breastfeeding throughout the first 2 years or more of a child's life. Indicators of a breastfeeding-friendly city have yet to be identified. What are the indicators or criteria used to define breastfeeding friendliness in a geographic area such as a city and the settings within, which we have classified as community, healthcare and workplace? Three major databases and grey literature were searched. Records were screened to identify publications describing criteria such as indicators or descriptions of a breastfeeding-friendly setting, defined as ‘criteria-sets'. These criteria-sets were then categorized …

Covid, Elite Rhetoric, And Americans’ Attitudes Toward U.S. Trade Practices With China, Dmitriy Nurullayev, Ping Xu, James Garand
Political Science Faculty Publications
Objectives: In this article, we consider how the COVID-19 pandemic and evaluations of Donald Trump combined to influence Americans' attitudes toward U.S. trade practices with China. We suggest that psychological factors—such as confirmation bias and transfer of grievances—influence how individuals evaluate the costs and benefits of trade. Specifically, we argue that the severity of the pandemic (reflected by both cumulative deaths and news coverage of the pandemic) and the rhetoric of (then) President Trump came together to influence Americans’ attitudes toward trade with China.
Methods: To assess the COVID effect, the Trump effect, and their interaction effect on …
Asymmetry In The Digital Age: Cyber Deterrence Strategies For Small States, Tony Yuan Li
Asymmetry In The Digital Age: Cyber Deterrence Strategies For Small States, Tony Yuan Li
Journal of Strategic Security
In an era where cyberwarfare poses an invisible but potent threat to national security, traditional deterrence theories fall short in providing nations with a viable strategy to defend themselves. This is especially the case for small states, where limited national resources and cyber capabilities prevent them from effectively deterring larger powers. This paper investigates whether small states can achieve cyber deterrence, and the means to do so. This research challenges the preconception that small states are at a disadvantage in cyber contestation, and instead proposes that their small size offers unique defensive benefits. A smaller attack surface, faster incident response …
Variability In Semidiurnal Surface And Internal Tides In Global Ocean Model Simulations, Harpreet Kaur
Variability In Semidiurnal Surface And Internal Tides In Global Ocean Model Simulations, Harpreet Kaur
Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on semidiurnal (D2) surface and internal tides. Chapter 2 investigates the transition of M2 barotropic Kelvin waves into Hybrid Kelvin-Edge (HKE) waves and the associated generation of internal tides at widening shelves using theory and a realistic global baroclinic Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) simulation. To understand the effect of complex, realistic bathymetry on the HKE wave transition, we perform quasi-realistic barotropic HYCOM simulations of the Celtic Sea/Bay of Biscay shelf areas. We conclude that the HKE wave transition is most likely masked by the effects of complex bathymetry and offshelf baroclinic fluxes cannot be exclusively …

Each virtual issue will be accompanied by a perspective that highlights the historic and contemporary contributions of our journals to a specific topic in molecular evolution. This perspective, the first in the series, presents an account of the broad array of methods that have been published in the Society for Molecular Biology …

Background: A rebound in myopia progression following cessation of atropine eyedrops has been reported, yet there is limited data on the effects of stopping 0.01% atropine compared to placebo control. This study tested the hypothesis that there is minimal rebound myopia progression after cessation of 0.01% atropine eyedrops, compared to a placebo. Methods: Children with myopia (n = 153) were randomised to receive 0.01% atropine eyedrops or a placebo (2:1 ratio) daily at bedtime during the 2-year treatment phase of the study. In the third year (wash-out phase), all participants ceased eyedrop instillation. Participants underwent an eye examination every 6 …

Two analog holographic wavefront sensors, for measurement of defocus, have been fabricated as both thin and volume phase transmission holograms in a self-developing photopolymer. This represents the first reported direct comparison of hologram regimes when designed for wavefront sensing. An analysis of the effect of crosstalk in the presence of one other aberration mode (astigmatism X (0/90°), coma X (horizontal), and primary spherical aberration) was carried out with each version of the sensor. The performance of thin and volume analog holographic wavefront sensors was characterized under emulated conditions associated with moderate atmospheric turbulence.
