Machine Learning For Automated Sand Transport Monitoring In A Pipeline Using Distributed Acoustic Sensor Data, Harrison Gietz, Jyotsna Sharma, Mayank Tyagi Jan 2024

Machine Learning For Automated Sand Transport Monitoring In A Pipeline Using Distributed Acoustic Sensor Data, Harrison Gietz, Jyotsna Sharma, Mayank Tyagi

Faculty Publications

Uncontrolled sand production presents a substantial challenge to wellbore and pipeline integrity and efficiency of hydrocarbon production operations, often leading to equipment damage and compromised productivity. Traditional sand detection methods on the surface alert operators to sanding issues, but they are often a lagging indicator of downhole sanding events and do not provide precise identification of the problematic reservoir zones. Addressing this limitation, this study harnesses a combination of efficient signal processing and machine learning (ML) to analyze data from optical-fiber-based distributed acoustic sensors (DASs), thus serving as the first instance (to the authors' knowledge) of an automated and real-time …

The Effect Of A Neonatal Palliative Care Education Program In Increasing Knowledge And Communication Self-Efficacy Among Nicu Nurses, Shiou-Huei Joy Wang Jan 2024

The Effect Of A Neonatal Palliative Care Education Program In Increasing Knowledge And Communication Self-Efficacy Among Nicu Nurses, Shiou-Huei Joy Wang

Doctoral Projects

Background: Neonatal palliative care is crucial to providing comprehensive, high-quality care to neonates with life-limiting or life-threatening health conditions and their families. One significant barrier to the inconsistent provision of neonatal palliative care is the lack of education. This project aimed to deliver an education training program to increase neonatal palliative care knowledge and self-efficacy in NICU nurses. Method: A pre-post-test study design was used to examine the efficacy of an educational training program on NICU nurses’ knowledge and communication self-efficacy in neonatal palliative care. A post-test was administered immediately after the training and again four weeks later to evaluate …

Dies Legibiles

Thank you for reading the fourth volume of Dies Legibiles! This year, the journal’s reach continued to grow; we received more than double the number of submissions than we did during the 2022–2023 academic year, including submissions from more than fifteen colleges and universities. In a time when public support and funding for the humanities is falling, it has been an incredible experience to see such strong enthusiasm for the field of Medieval Studies.

Effects Of Decompressive Craniectomy Combined With Edaravone On Postoperative Neurological Functions And Hemodynamics Of Patients With Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, Xinjing Yang

Neurosciences

Objectives: To assess the effects of decompressive craniectomy combined with edaravone on the postoperative neurological functions and hemodynamics of patients with severe traumatic brain injury (STBI). Methods: The subjects included totally 186 STBI patients admitted during January 2018 and January 2021. The random number table method was adopted to set an operation group (n=82) and a combined medication group (n=104) for the subjects. The changes of the clinical indicators were observed. Results: Compared with the operation group, the combined medication group had higher Neurobehavioral Cognitive Status Examination score, Barthel index score, total response rate and heart rate ( p <0.05). Besides, by contrast to those of the operation group, the mean arterial pressure, myocardial zymogram indicators, postoperative neurological function indicators and total incidence rate of complications of the combined medication group were reduced ( p <0.05). In comparison with the operation group, the combined medication group exhibited raised ipsilateral contralateral blood velocities ( p <0.05). Furthermore, the combined medication group had a better postoperative 1-year prognosis than the operation group ( p <0.05). Conclusion: Edaravone in combination with decompressive craniectomy benefits the postoperative improvement of neurological functions of STBI patients, effectively stabilizes the hemodynamics, induces few complications and improves the prognosis.

A Pandemic In The Educational Sphere: Collecting And Understanding Students' Responses To University Communication On Covid-19, Matthew R. Stapleton

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

This dissertation addresses the lived experiences of Florida college students during the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically the communication that was provided to them through their university on the subject of the pandemic. This two-stage research process first involved the collection of survey responses on a variety of pandemic communication-centered topics from 39 university students from three universities (University of Central Florida, University of Florida, and University of South Florida). Second, a subsequent interview with 7 students provided qualitative information to further explicate themes and trends seen through data analysis.

Using health and technical communication alongside crisis communication analyses to understand what …

Wolves Of Yellowstone (2022) By Catherine Barr, Samantha Piede Jan 2024

Wolves Of Yellowstone (2022) By Catherine Barr, Samantha Piede

Middle Grades Books

When wolves were eliminated from Yellowstone National Park in the early 20th century, the park's ecosystem began to deteriorate, leading to elk overpopulation, overgrazing, and environmental collapse. The degradation of the park spawned a rewilding project, in which wolves from Canadian packs were reintroduced to the park. The process and effects of this rewilding is captured in Catherine Barr's The Wolves of Yellowstone, which takes on the philosophical complexity of not only ecological interconnection, but the ethical complications involved trying to restore a species that is not universally lauded by locals.

Protein supplementation often refers to increasing the intake of this particular macronutrient through dietary supplements in the form of powders, ready-to-drink shakes, and bars. The primary purpose of protein supplementation is to augment dietary protein intake, aiding individuals in meeting their protein requirements, especially when it may be challenging to do so through regular food (i.e. chicken, beef, fish, pork, etc.) sources alone. A large body of evidence shows that protein has an important role in exercising and sedentary individuals. A PubMed search of “protein and exercise performance” reveals thousands of publications. Despite the considerable volume of evidence, it is …

Placebo Trials: A New Tool To Discourage Wrongful Convictions Caused By Jury Error, Hayley Stillwell Jan 2024

Placebo Trials: A New Tool To Discourage Wrongful Convictions Caused By Jury Error, Hayley Stillwell

Faculty Articles

Despite the foundational principle in the American criminal justice system that it is better to acquit the guilty than to convict the innocent, wrongful convictions remain a persistent issue. Wrongful convictions are sometimes caused by flawed evidence, such as eyewitness misidentifications and unreliable forensic techniques. Researchers and scholars have studied this problem of flawed evidence extensively, leading to many successful reform efforts to address this portion of the wrongful conviction problem. But there is another portion of the wrongful conviction problem that has yet to be the target of reform efforts—wrongful convictions caused by juror error. Implicit biases, forbidden assumptions, …

Tax Streams, Land Rents, And Urban Land Allocation, Yugang Tang, Zhihao Su, Yilin Hou, Zhendong Yin Jan 2024

Tax Streams, Land Rents, And Urban Land Allocation, Yugang Tang, Zhihao Su, Yilin Hou, Zhendong Yin

Center for Policy Research

This paper examines the fiscal motives behind municipal governments' decisions to allocate commercial and residential land when two categories of land use are subject to different fiscal revenue alternatives: business-related tax and/or land rent. We use urban parcel-level land transfers during China’s peak period of urbanization, match commercial parcels with residential parcels, and find significant price discounts on commercial parcels relative to adjacent residential parcels. The observed discounts arise from the future tax flows from commercial use, i.e., expected taxes from developed commercial land reduce its transfer price. We conduct a structural estimation to examine the implications on land use …

Painting A Clearer Picture: Introducing New Federal Rule Of Evidence 107 Regulating Illustrative Aids, Daniel J. Capra, Liesa L. Richter

Faculty Articles

They say a picture is worth a thousand words-and charts, drawings, diagrams, computer animations, and even tangible items are utilized at trial in virtually every case tried in the federal and state court systems. Litigants have come to depend heavily upon such aids to engage visual learners in the jury box and to present a compelling narrative. And the creative use of trial aids has only increased with the rapid technological advancements of recent decades. The ubiquity of such aids notwithstanding, there is no written standard governing their use, no agreed-upon lexicon for describing them, and no set of uniform …

Long Live The Federal Rules Of Evidence!, Daniel J. Capra, Liesa L. Richter

Faculty Articles

The Federal Rules of Evidence have been pronounced dead. Indeed, the Federal Rules of Evidence have recently been declared dormant, stagnant, frozen, lethargic, and yes, deceased. In The Living Rules of Evidence, 170 U. Pa. L. Rev. 937 (March 2022), Professor Alexander Nunn claims that the Rules are lifeless, incapable of any meaningful change, and littered with anachronistic and even dangerous standards and provisions. To blame for the moribund state of the Federal Rules of Evidence is the bureaucratic and complex federal rulemaking process that requires amendments to traverse multiple constituencies in a multi-year process before taking effect. As a …

Aborted Confidentiality, Stacey A. Tovino

Faculty Articles

As the number of abortion-restricting laws continues to grow in the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, law enforcement officers are increasingly interested in obtaining and using reproductive health information for law enforcement purposes. Although physicians and other covered entities generally are required to keep protected health information (PHI) confidential under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Privacy Rule, a number of regulatory exceptions historically have permitted covered entities to disclose PHI for civil, criminal, and administrative investigations and proceedings. On April 26, 2024, the Department of Health and Human Services …

A Wolf In Sheep’S Attire: How Consent Enfeebles Our Fourth Amendment, Stephen E. Henderson, Guha Krishnamurthi

Faculty Articles

The Fourth Amendment is a mirage. On paper—in the rules studied by law students, analyzed by scholars, and proclaimed by jurists—its limitations are many and, oftentimes, significant. Yet the experience of large numbers of Americans is entirely to the contrary, thanks to the rights-annihilating, under-theorized exception of “consent.” Under its guise, law enforcement officers routinely conduct what would otherwise be constitutionally-restrained searches and seizures, and they do so without meaningful explanation or assent. Fortunately, change—whether legislative or (ideally) constitutional—could be straightforward. Thanks to other sufficient triggers, consent could be replaced by a narrow, rights-protective doctrine under which law enforcement could …
