Hesychasm And The Jesus Prayer: Spiritual Formation In An Ecumenical World – Exploring The Practice Of The Eastern Orthodox Jesus Prayer With The Evangelical Protestant Tradition, Craig Francis Bosman
Theses
The question that forms the heart of this research is: “Can the Jesus Prayer establish roots to develop and flourish, and be accepted as a new, legitimate practice in Evangelicalism?” To begin answering, the practice will be explored within its Eastern Orthodox context focusing on the Jesus Prayers’ biblical roots, early development, and official acceptance within Orthodoxy. Then the Evangelical movement will be surveyed to gain an understanding of its identity from a sociological and theological perspective with special attention on its soteriological framework, customary spiritual disciplines, and general attitudes toward mysticism (defined as direct experience of God through apophatic, …

Exploring The Experiences Of A South Asian Client And Facilitators Of Men's Behaviour Change Programs In Western Australia, Madhuri Mathisen
Theses
This study explores the experiences of male perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) attending men’s behaviour change programs in Western Australia from the perspective of program facilitators and a South Asian client. Informed by social and contextual constructionism with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), this study examines the experience of 10 mixed culture facilitators who worked with South Asian intimate partner violence perpetrators in men’s behaviour change programs and one South Asian client of an intervention. The participants’ experiences were contextualised through a semi-structured interview. The facilitators’ findings revealed that South Asian clients demonstrated patriarchal beliefs with a victim-blaming tendency and …
The Philosophy Behind The Vatican's Approach To Relations With China, John Ogilvie
The Philosophy Behind The Vatican's Approach To Relations With China, John Ogilvie
Theses
The Vatican has always played a significant role in global politics, and it continues to do so in the contemporary World. The Vatican’s relations with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) have drawn considerable attention in recent years, especially following the signing of the 2018 Vatican-China Agreement. Some scholars and commentators suggest that the 2018 Agreement and its terms represent a significant deviation from the norm in Vatican diplomacy. In light of that controversy, the present thesis provides an introductory examination of the philosophy that possibly guides the Vatican’s relations with the PRC and the implications this holds for an …
The Call For Faa Regulation Change: Why Individuals With Adhd And Adhd Medication Prescriptions Should Be Permitted To Become Pilots, Clare Kelley
Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine
This paper delves into the pressing need for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to reconsider its regulations concerning individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and those prescribed ADHD medications who aspire to become pilots. The current FAA regulations exhibit a rigid and outdated understanding of ADHD and its treatment, leading to the exclusion of a growing number of individuals from the aviation industry. Through an analysis of studies demonstrating the safety and efficacy of ADHD medications in improving driving performance and reducing accident risks, this paper advocates for a shift in the FAA's stance. Societal factors, such as the increasing prevalence …

“Bon Secours turned the hospital’s poverty into an asset,” read a recent story about Richmond Community Hospital published in The New York Times. Richmond Community Hospital has been part of the Bon Secours network since 1995. Since then, the hospital has become one of the most profitable in the Bon Secours network. Yet, over time, Richmond Community Hospital has been stripped of its resources, lost medical staff, and generally seen a decrease in its ability to provide patients quality health care services. The hospital is located in Richmond’s East End, which is a predominantly low-income neighborhood, and a large …
The Necessity Of Restorative Justice Within Prisons, Sarah J. Pietrowski
The Necessity Of Restorative Justice Within Prisons, Sarah J. Pietrowski
Law Student Publications
In the era of mass incarceration, it is vital to reexamine the prison system to identify not only its weaknesses, but its successes. Successes in correctional systems are often measured by a reduction in recidivism rates, and in states where restorative justice practices have been implemented in prisons, recidivism rates have exhibited a significant decrease, affirming the necessity of restorative justice practices in prisons. Additionally, restorative justice not only helps victims of crime feel that their voices are heard and that the one who harmed them will experience personal growth, but it is preferred by the majority of victims as …
Stopping The Cycle Of Abuse Before It Starts: An Evaluation Of Virginia's Domestic Violence Primary Prevention Model In Schools, Amanda Palini
Stopping The Cycle Of Abuse Before It Starts: An Evaluation Of Virginia's Domestic Violence Primary Prevention Model In Schools, Amanda Palini
Law Student Publications
In 1994 the United States was faced with a domestic violence epidemic that led Congress to pass the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The Act was passed to respond to the needs of victims, particularly women, who are at the highest risk of victimization in crimes such as domestic violence and sexual assault. While domestic violence has been recognized as an important public health problem, most services provided are focused on after-the-fact interventions rather than prevention.
Many states, including Virginia, have since created domestic violence prevention programs, added preventative requirements to their state code, and tasked their respective Departments of …

Oops! The Unfortunate (But Basic) Error In The New Ucc Article 12, David Frisch, Nicole Dalrymple
Law Student Publications
The Uniform Law Commission and American Law Institute have recognized the need for commercial law to govern digital transactions and responded with the proposed addition of a new article to the Uniform Commercial Code (the “Code” or “UCC”), Article 12. Article 12 will govern the transfer of property rights in a particular category of digital assets (controllable electronic records), which would include commonly known digital assets, such as bitcoin and non-fungible tokens (“NFTs”). Although the addition of Article 12 should provide more certainty in transactions involving current and emerging technologies, there is a fundamental problem with the article as it …
Simulating Hedge Fund Fee Structures In An Investments Course
Simulating Hedge Fund Fee Structures In An Investments Course
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
Graduate level investments courses frequently include a discussion of hedge funds and the related fees. Many alternative fee structures exist for these funds. It is important for future hedge fund managers to wrestle with the advantages and disadvantages of each structure as they define their fund. This paper introduces a semester-long exercise that requires students to select a specific fee structure, implement and track it, and experience the consequences of their performance.

Therapeutic options for the treatment of Surfactant Protein-B (SP-B) deficiency, an autosomal recessive disorder that leads to fatal respiratory distress, are extremely limited with the exception of double lung transplantation. One method for treating this monogenic lung disease is with adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy treatment that delivers the hSFTPB transgene into the lungs. The transient nature of AAV transgene expression led to a need for sustained gene expression, which could possibly be achieved through redosing. The main obstacle with redosing is the innate immune response and subsequent inflammatory response pathways that are activated after recognition of unmethylated CpG motifs …

Adult Learners Self-Derive New Knowledge Through Integration Of Novel Information And Prior Knowledge And Are More Successful With Reactivation, Jayantika Chakraborty, Alena G. Esposito
Psychology
Self-derivation through integration is the process of integrating novel facts and producing new knowledge never directly taught. Knowledge integration has been studied with the presentation of two novel facts. However, in educational settings, individuals are required to integrate new information with prior knowledge learned days, months, or years earlier. Prior knowledge robustly predicts learning outcomes, but less is known about self-derivation through the integration of new information with prior knowledge. Thus, in Study 1, we examined adults' (n = 25) memory integration of new facts with prior knowledge. The participants had 52% accuracy in self-derivation. In Study 2 (n = …

Subvert The Dominant Paradigm: Reimagining Academic Library Hiring Processes, Xan Arch, Isaac P. Gilman
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
For libraries dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion, it is crucial to address firmly-held traditions about “correct” hiring practices. This work of revising traditional practices can be a fraught process, as different stakeholders often hold strong opinions about how best to evaluate candidates and conduct successful searches. To move our two academic libraries toward more inclusive hiring practices, we each led internal processes to entirely revise our hiring manuals. We will discuss the challenges and core issues addressed through this work, and the resulting principles that we believe will result in a more equitable, transparent, and candidate-friendly process.
Enhancing Green Sea Urchin (Strongylocentrotus Drobachiensis) Production Toward Sustainability, Tara Plee
Enhancing Green Sea Urchin (Strongylocentrotus Drobachiensis) Production Toward Sustainability, Tara Plee
Open Access Dissertations
The green sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) fishery was once prosperous in the Gulf of Maine, peaking in the 1980s and early 1990s. However, since the early 1990s, the fishery has dramatically declined despite having harvesting restrictions. To sustain the industry, production through aquaculture is necessary, but hatchery production methods are not yet optimized, with settlement success and post-settlement survival as low as 1-5%, and the spatial scale for field grow-out may be limited in some regions due to climate change. Additionally, there are knowledge gaps in fishery management regarding whether oversized S. droebachiensis help sustain natural stocks. This …

No Leaders But The Laity: Equipping, Educating, And Training Laypeople To Lead The Local Church, Christian Bass
Doctor of Ministry
The unfortunate story for many modern independent local churches is decline, disconnect, and irrelevance. This was only exacerbated by the 2020 global pandemic. Despite well- intentioned staff and many “church growth” tools, the independent local church saw many pastors and members leave and institutions close. The good news, however, is the church was never intended to be a cookie-cutter home, a franchise, or a satellite location. It was designed to be a contextualized incarnation of the unique Gospel expression of a local community by and for the people. More than ever, the church needs its laypeople to see themselves as …

Essays On The Greek Debt Crisis And The Welfare Paradox In The Lucas Natural Rate Model, Liandong Yang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation includes two projects, one on the Greek debt crisis and the other on the welfare in the Lucas natural rate model.
The first chapter discusses the origin of Greek debt crisis. The Greek debt crisis stands out as a compelling case study of a severe financial crisis in a developed country within a currency zone. Despite the abundance of literature on the subject, the significance of debt accumulation in the 1980s is often overlooked, and details are frequently omitted. Through an analysis of data gathered from Greek government’s public finance statistical yearbooks spanning from 1962 to 2008, I …
