Consequences Of Group-Based Misperceptions Of Climate Concern For Efficacy And Action, Zoe Leviston, Tanvi Nangrani, Samantha K. Stanley, Iain Walker
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
People tend to underestimate others’ environmental values, including when judging the values of minority-status groups. Using a large national sample (N = 5110), we test whether these misperceptions extend to concern about climate change in Australia, and differ depending on immigrant status, ethnicity, and where one is located (i.e., in or outside capital cities). We also examine the consequences of misperceptions for self-efficacy and pro-environmental behaviour. We find personal climate concern is high, but perceptions of others’ concern is lower. Immigrants and Australian-born participants have similarly high concern, but both groups underestimate how concerned immigrants are. Southern-Central-Asian identifiers are the …

Postoperative Fluid Therapy In Enhanced Recovery After Surgery For Pancreaticoduodenectomy, Sharnice Koek, Johnny Lo, Rupert Ledger, Mohammed Ballal
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Backgrounds/Aims: Optimal intravenous fluid management during the perioperative period for patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) within the framework of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is unclear. Studies have indicated that excessive total body salt and water can contribute to the development of oedema, leading to increased morbidity and extended hospital stays. This study aimed to assess the effects of an intravenous therapy regimen during postoperative day (POD) 0 to 2 in PD patients within ERAS. Methods: A retrospective interventional cohort study was conducted, and it involved all PD patients before and after implementation of ERAS (2009–2017). In the ERAS group, a …

This study finds that gender diversity harms market-based performance, …
Teaching Stare Decisis To First-Year Law Students In Higher Education: A Pedagogical Blind Alley?, Kenneth Yin, Carmela De Maio
Teaching Stare Decisis To First-Year Law Students In Higher Education: A Pedagogical Blind Alley?, Kenneth Yin, Carmela De Maio
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The doctrine of stare decisis is often explained in first-year law studies as synonymous with the doctrine of precedent and dichotomised into ratio decidendi and obiter dicta. This explanation of stare decisis is frequently supplemented by an exercise where the novice law student is provided with a case and directed to identify the ratio decidendi of the case, and to appreciate the distinction between ratio and obiter dicta in it, the latter being persuasive only. It is argued that this pedagogy is limited and unrealistic because stare decisis is a dynamic process whereby, applying the precepts of formal legal logic, …

A Charging Strategy For Large Commercial Electric Vehicle Fleets, Bassam Al-Hanahi, Iftekhar Ahmad, Daryoush Habibi, Pravakar Pradhan, Mohammad A. S. Masoum
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The popularity of Commercial Electric Vehicles (CEVs) has experienced a surge in recent years, particularly in urban vocational contexts, as a means of advancing towards the goal of attaining net-zero emissions by 2050. The return-to-base charging strategy, which involves charging CEVs at depots, has become a prevalent practice for smaller CEV fleets. Nevertheless, for larger CEV fleets, the limited charging capacity at depots presents a significant challenge, leading to a reliance on both limited depot charging infrastructure and public charging infrastructure. This reliance can have a substantial impact on both the operational costs and the sustainability of logistics services. To …

Advancing Sustainable Malting Practices: Aquaporins As Potential Breeding Targets For Improved Water Uptake During Controlled Germination Of Barley (Hordeum Vulgare L.), Clare E. O’Lone, Angéla Juhász, Mitchell Nye-Wood, David Moody, Hugh Dunn, Jean P. Ral, Michelle L. Colgrave
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The conversion of raw barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) to malt requires a process of controlled germination, where the grain is submerged in water to raise the moisture content to > 40%. The transmembrane proteins, aquaporins, influence water uptake during the initial stage of controlled germination, yet little is known of their involvement in malting. With the current focus on sustainability, understanding the mechanisms of water uptake and usage during the initial stages of malting has become vital in improving efficient malting practices. In this study, we used quantitative proteomics analysis of two malting barley genotypes demonstrating differing water-uptake phenotypes in the …

Cellular Structure Mediated Dislocation Regulation In Additively Manufactured Refractory High Entropy Alloy, Changxi Liu, Lechun Xie, Lai-Chang Zhang, Liqiang Wang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
A Ti1.5Nb1Ta0.5Zr1Mo0.5 (TNTZM) refractory high entropy alloy (HEA) with a cellular structure was successfully fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF). Compression testing and cyclic deformation testing results revealed that, in the cellular structure, the cell walls could store dislocations. Furthermore, the local chemical order (LCO) plays a crucial role in controlling dislocations within the cell wall region. The LCO not only facilitates dislocation slip but also generates additional lattice distortion upon stress-induced LCO destruction to enable dislocation pinning. This work offers novel insights into the microstructure of additively manufactured refractory HEAs and uncovers a distinct dislocation regulation mechanism.

Stroke is a leading cause of disability worldwide which can cause significant and persistent upper limb (UL) impairment. It is difficult to predict UL motor recovery after stroke and to forecast the expected outcomes of rehabilitation interventions during the acute and subacute phases when using clinical data alone. Accurate prediction of response to treatment could allow for more timely and targeted interventions, thereby improving recovery, resource allocation, and reducing the economic impact of post-stroke disability. Initial motor impairment is currently the strongest predictor of post-stroke motor recovery. Despite significant progress, current prediction models could be refined with additional predictors, and …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
I recut an observational documentary about a woman called Bekti into a more conventional hero’s journey for a broadcaster. The hero’s journey narrative requires large obstacles to be overcome by the hero in their search for their ego. In this documentary the obstacle is connecting experimental science with communities with the aim to reduce dengue fever, and the hero’s ‘ego’ is to be an effective communicator. Using the hero’s journey style of narrative reduced the importance of the domestic aspects of Bekti’s life because these scenes did not contribute to overcoming obstacles or finding ego. To explore these changes use …
Blind Source Separation And Denoising Of Underwater Acoustic Signals, Ruba Zaheer, Iftekhar Ahmad, Quoc Viet Phung, Daryoush Habibi
Blind Source Separation And Denoising Of Underwater Acoustic Signals, Ruba Zaheer, Iftekhar Ahmad, Quoc Viet Phung, Daryoush Habibi
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Due to the addition of new underwater vessels and other natural noise contributors, the underwater environment is becoming congested and noisy. Undersea monitoring sonobuoys receive multiple mixed acoustic signals from different vessels that need to be separated and identified in the presence of underwater noise (UWN). It is extremely challenging to separate highly correlated acoustic signals from a noisy mixture without prior knowledge of mixing process and propagation channel. Also, in many cases, the separated signals from the noisy mixture doesn’t accurately describe the correct signal. This study proposes a novel multi-stage method to separate underwater acoustic source signals from …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The emergence of cryptocurrencies has caught the attention worldwide. Some parties have considered issuing cryptocurrencies an excellent opportunity to raise capital and other businesses. However, the factors that foster the proliferation of cryptocurrency are not fully explored. This paper documented a comparative case study of USDT (a successful stablecoin) and EOS (a successful non-stable cryptocurrency). Based on our findings and previous literature, we suggested a Technology-Institution-Market (TIM) framework for cryptocurrency proliferation. We also elaborated on previous FinTech product development and adoption theories and provided some practical implications for cryptocurrency investors, issuers and regulators.

Ageing is a complex biological process with variations among individuals, leading to the development of ageing clocks to estimate biological age. Glycans, particularly in immunoglobulin G (IgG), have emerged as potential biomarkers of ageing, with changes in glycosylation patterns correlating with chronological age. For precision analysis, three different plasma pools were analysed over 26 days in tetraplicates, 312 samples in total. In short-term variability analysis, two cohorts were analysed: AstraZeneca MFO cohort of 26 healthy individuals (median age 20) and a cohort of 70 premenopausal Chinese women (median age 22.5) cohort monitored over 3 months. Long-term variability analysis involved two …

Mathematical Connections In Preservice Secondary Mathematics Teachers’ Solution Strategies To Algebra Problems, Vesife Hatisaru, Kaye Stacey, Jon R. Star
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study investigated the mathematical connections found in the solutions provided by 22 preservice secondary mathematics teachers to a set of algebra problems. Interest in, and research on, mathematical connections has gained prominence of the past decade. Here, we use the Extended Theory of Mathematical Connections or ETMC to explore the types of connections that this framework does and does not capture in the preservice teachers’ solutions. The ETMC surfaced four types of mathematical connections across four problems: ‘different representations’, ‘procedural’, ‘part-whole’ and ‘meaning’. The other types of connections defined in ETMC such as ‘reversibility’ or ‘feature’ were not found …

The Experience Of Occupational Therapists And Physiotherapists Using A Prototype, Evidence-Informed Online Knowledge Translation Resource To Learn About Patient-Defined, Personally-Meaningful Chronic Pain Rehabilitation, Katrina J. Liddiard, Annette J. Raynor, Cary A. Brown
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Purpose: Chronic pain is a complex biopsychosocial experience, and rehabilitation helps people to manage pain, and restore valued life roles. Evidence suggests that more positive outcomes occur when clients perceive their rehabilitation to be meaningful. People with chronic pain describe rehabilitation as personally-meaningful when they develop a genuine connection with a credible therapist who they see as a guiding partner, and when rehabilitation holds personal value, is self-defined, and relevant to their sense of self-identity. This paper presents a qualitative study of therapists’ experience using an e-learning package on patient-defined, personally-meaningful rehabilitation. Methods: A qualitative descriptive design was used to …

Achieving Covert Communication With A Probabilistic Jamming Strategy, Xun Chen, Fujun Gao, Min Qiu, Jia Zhang, Feng Shu, Shihao Yan
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In this work, we consider a covert communication scenario, where a transmitter Alice communicates to a receiver Bob with the aid of a probabilistic and uninformed jammer against an adversary warden's detection. The transmission status and power of the jammer are random and follow some priori probabilities. We first analyze the warden's detection performance as a function of the jammer's transmission probability, transmit power distribution, and Alice's transmit power. We then maximize the covert throughput from Alice to Bob subject to a covertness constraint, by designing the covert communication strategies from three different perspectives: Alice's perspective, the jammer's perspective, and …

The drilling process plays a crucial role in the assembly process of modern-day manufactories. One of the major causes of component rejection during drilling operations is the incorrect selection of spindle speed and feed rate. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of process factors such as spindle speed and feed rate on torque, thrust force, temperature surface roughness, and chip formation during the drilling of AISI 1020 mild steel. A combination of finite element modeling and experimental investigation was employed to achieve the process. Specifically, the commercially available finite element software, Deform 3D, was used for simulation. The …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Electrochemical transformation processes involving carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and small-molecule chemistries represent a promising means to store renewable energy sources in the form of chemical energy. However, their widespread deployment is hindered by a lack of efficient, selective, durable, and affordable electrocatalysts. Recently, grain boundary (GB) engineering as one category of defect engineering, has emerged as a viable and powerful pathway to achieve improved electrocatalytic performances. This review presents a timely and comprehensive overview of recent advances in GB engineering for efficient electrocatalysis. The beneficial effects of introducing GBs into electrocatalysts are discussed, followed by an overview of the synthesis …

Qualitative methods for impact assessment (IA) represent a broad spectrum of approaches that are important for realising effective IA practice. The purpose of this paper is to identify and promote qualitative methods that are available for use in contemporary and future (next-generation) IA processes. From an extensive literature review, an international survey (145 responses), expert interviews (48 interviewees), and a workshop attended by 27 IA practitioners, 17 qualitative method categories were identified. These were further subdivided into three classes: conventional qualitative methods, highly participatory methods, and mixed methods. Each method is described, and an indication given of how each can …
Preventive Genetic Screening: Genetics And Ethics, Elena Vinton
Preventive Genetic Screening: Genetics And Ethics, Elena Vinton
Scripps Senior Theses
For completion of my dual thesis at Scripps College in Biology and Bioethics, I analyzed the feasibility of preventive genetic screening both ethically and genetically. Because each discipline approaches academic inquiry differently, I decided to ask two sequential questions: (1) How are variants analyzed in preventive genetic screening? (Biology) (2) Do patients who undergo preventive genetic screening have the ‘right not to know’ their genetic status – including medically actionable genetic information? (Bioethics). I have separated my ethical and biological inquiries into two sections. The first section is an ethical inquiry into the justification of the ‘right not to know’ …

Communicating Through Dance: Examining Dance & Behavioral Therapy To Treat Selective Mutism, Clara Spitz
Communicating Through Dance: Examining Dance & Behavioral Therapy To Treat Selective Mutism, Clara Spitz
Scripps Senior Theses
Very little research has been done to examine the efficacy of treatments for adolescents with selective mutism (SM). Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been distinguished as one of the optimal treatment styles for SM, a significant portion of research in this area has focused on children. Additionally, it often incorporates play therapy, which may not necessarily apply as effectively to older populations. Dance therapy has emerged as a promising and innovative treatment for various anxiety and communication issues. Although specific studies on its application to SM are limited, existing research suggests its potential effectiveness in addressing this condition as …
"Her Best Teacher, Comforter, And Friend": The Gendered Politics Of Labor In Louisa May Alcott's Work: A Story Of Experience, Mena Bova
Scripps Senior Theses
"I only ask for a chance to be a useful, happy woman," exclaims main character Christie Devon in the opening pages of Louisa May Alcott's Work: A Story of Experience. Unsurprisingly, much of Work is focused on labor: over the book's span of twenty years, Christie participates in many forms of work, from waged labor to domestic labor to religious labor. While much of the existing scholarship about Work focuses on Christie's experiences in the world of external, waged labor, this thesis contends that Christie's experiences with domestic labor has been a historically overlooked area. Using a social reproduction …
Fugitive And Sumud Encounters: Geographies Of Black-Palestinian Transnational Refusal, Anna Babboni
Fugitive And Sumud Encounters: Geographies Of Black-Palestinian Transnational Refusal, Anna Babboni
Scripps Senior Theses
“Fugitive and Sumud Encounters: Geographies of Black-Palestinian Transnational Refusal” explores the parallel practices of Palestinian sumud, a “political-psycho-affective subjectivity” or philosophy of refusal that roughly translates to “steadfastness” from Arabic, and Black fugitivity, the practice by which Black folk find freedom and escape from the continual construction of Blackness as fungible object, rooted in histories of maroonage. Both practices of refusal are historically and spatially contingent, responding to conditions of settler colonial and anti-Black enclosure. However, when put into conversion, sumud and fugitivity are strikingly familiar in their methods of refusing liberal enclosure. In their overlap, sumud and fugitivity lay …

The Evolution Of Attractiveness: A Comparative Analysis Of Beauty Norms At Scripps College, Molly Craig
Scripps Senior Theses
This undergraduate thesis investigates the beauty norms present at Scripps College, a historically women's college in California. The study extends previous research by introducing the concept of the 'beauty gap' between the Real Beauty Standard (RBS) and the Perceived Beauty Standard (PBS), highlighting the influence of meso-level norms within the college community. Utilizing a newly developed scale, the Attractiveness Standard Norms (ASN), in addition to the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale and the Self-Objectification Questionnaire, the research examines the evolution of beauty norms between Freshmen and Senior year. A sample of 57 respondents from the Freshman and Senior classes participated in …
Bayesian Inference In Reinforcement Learning Neural Networks During A Markov Decision Processes?, Katherine Graham
Bayesian Inference In Reinforcement Learning Neural Networks During A Markov Decision Processes?, Katherine Graham
Scripps Senior Theses
The predictive mind theory proposes that brains work in a way that makes predictions about future stimuli to process information efficiently and accurately. Bayesian brain theory suggests that the brain utilizes Bayesian probability models to make predictions, while the free-energy minimization hypothesis proposes that these predictions are made to minimize energy or uncertainty, ensuring accurate perceptions. Vertechi et al. (2020) explored animal participants’ utilization of stimulus-bound strategy versus inference-based strategy to solve a Markov decision process with a 2-state environment, one of which is always active. These sites have a certain probability of switching to a different site and the …
Rainbow-Washing The Occupation: A Critical Examination Of Israeli Claims To Feminist And Gay-Friendly Modernity, Melia Oliver
Rainbow-Washing The Occupation: A Critical Examination Of Israeli Claims To Feminist And Gay-Friendly Modernity, Melia Oliver
Scripps Senior Theses
In this thesis, I employ a queer analytic to uncover how Israel weaponizes claims to feminist and gay-friendly modernity—referred to as pink- and purple washing, respectively—as forms of propaganda to justify their occupation of Palestine. Pink- and purplewasing narratives rely on racist and Orientalist conceptions of Palestinian “barbarism” which Israel reproduces in order to bolster their settler colonial project. I analyze pink- and purplewashing propaganda as symptoms of larger homo- and femonationalist formations which stem from and further reinforce settler colonialism. I address allegations of “weaponized rape” during and after the events of October 7th and argue that this form …
Good Enough To Eat: How College Students Are (Re)Forming Their Relationships To Food, Sophia Lewis
Good Enough To Eat: How College Students Are (Re)Forming Their Relationships To Food, Sophia Lewis
Scripps Senior Theses
In this thesis, I seek to critically examine how college students at American liberal arts institutions relate to food in their everyday lives and how those relationships to food are formed in a cultural landscape where what and how one eats can carry significant moral implications. Through a series of ethnographic interviews, I found that college students are negotiating a variety of interconnected social influences that have shaped their relationships to food, the most prominent being the ways that their parents taught them to relate to food in childhood and adolescence, cultural conceptions of health, and their own embodied reactions …
