Sex-Based Differences In The Long-Term Fate Of Hippocampal Neurons Born After A Traumatic Brain Injury, Hannah C. Downing, Ashley B. Glover, Jessica E. Gebhardt, Katherine L. Thompson, Kathryn E. Saatman
Physiology Faculty Publications
Introduction: Moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) results in an early loss of immature hippocampal granule cells and the activation of typically quiescent neural stem cells (NSCs) in the dentate gyrus. Activation of NSCs leads to a robust increase in proliferation and generation of neural progenitor cells (NPCs), supporting restoration of the immature neuron population of over a period of 1–2 weeks. However, it is unclear if neurons born early after injury develop normally, survive long-term and functionally integrate into the hippocampal network. Although adult hippocampal neurogenesis is regulated in a sex-dependent manner, the majority of pre-clinical TBI studies lack the …

The fusion of skeletal muscle stem cell (MuSC) to myofibers during hypertrophy has exclusively focused on the transfer of the MuSC nucleus, leaving the fate of other MuSC organelles, such as mitochondria, largely unexplored. The objective of this study was to determine whether MuSCs transfer their mitochondria upon myofiber fusion in response to a hypertrophic stimulus. To achieve this goal, we specifically labeled MuSC mitochondria with Dendra2 fluorescence by crossing the MuSC-specific CreER (Pax7CreER/CreER) mouse with the Rosa26-Dendra2 mouse to generate the Pax7-Dendra2 mouse. To induce the fusion of MuSC to myofibers, Pax7-Dendra2 mice underwent synergist ablation surgery …

Seahorsedad: A Study Of Metaphors In Transmasculine Birther’S Instagram Posts, Alexa Anne Runnion
Seahorsedad: A Study Of Metaphors In Transmasculine Birther’S Instagram Posts, Alexa Anne Runnion
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Dominant notions of pregnancy frame gestation as a solely female process. However, the experiences of transmasculine birthers challenge this assumption, demonstrating that pregnancy is not inherently tied to womanhood but is instead shaped by social and cultural narratives and representations. This paper explores the unique pregnancy and parental exercises of transmasculine birthers by examining public social media posts under the hashtag #seahorsedad on Instagram. Utilizing metaphorical criticism, I aim to uncover how transmasculine birthers, known within the community as “seahorse dads,” both uphold and resist traditional notions of gender, pregnancy, and parenting through a combination of textual and visual metaphor. …
The Relationship Between Deans’ Transformational Leadership And Teachers’ Work Engagement In Higher Education Institutions In Inner Mongolia, China, Lingbo Han
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This study was designed to investigate the relationship between deans’ transformational leadership and teachers’ work engagement in Chinese higher education institutions, with a specific focus on Inner Mongolia. Against the backdrop of China’s ongoing higher education reforms and increasing emphasis on faculty development, understanding how leadership styles influence teacher motivation has become crucial for institutional advancement.
A quantitative, non-experimental causal-comparative design was employed to examine how four dimensions of transformational leadership - charisma, vision, individualized consideration, and intellectual stimulation - relate to teachers’ work engagement. Using multiple analytical approaches including correlation analysis, regression modeling, and comparative statistical tests, the study …
Increasing Nature Connection And Decreasing Climate Change Distress In An Indigenous Population: The Development Of A Traditional Ecological Knowledge Intervention Framework, Olathe Antonio
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Research suggests that nature connection is positively correlated with pro-environmental behaviors, concern for the climate, general wellbeing, and subjective levels of climate change distress. Few research studies have examined how to increase nature connectedness without increasing psychological distress. Such research is especially important for those who are disproportionately affected by climate change such as Indigenous Peoples. To address this discrepancy, we developed a culturally-grounded psychological intervention framework based in traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) for Indigenous populations and offered an adapted example for a Navajo population. The intervention was created in collaboration with TEK experts to conceptualize key psychologically-relevant TEK principles, …

Predicting Language And Literacy Success In Children With And Without Developmental Language Disorder, Melissa Catherine Phelan
Predicting Language And Literacy Success In Children With And Without Developmental Language Disorder, Melissa Catherine Phelan
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The purpose of this study was to investigate the roles of phonological, orthographic, and morphological awareness in predicting language and literacy success for children with developmental language disorder (DLD), DLD with dyslexia, and typically developing (TD) children. DLD, a prevalent yet underdiagnosed condition, is associated with significant psychosocial and academic challenges, including a roughly 50% likelihood of developing dyslexia. Current identification systems rely on inconsistent parent/teacher referrals, which miss approximately 60% of children with DLD and over 33% with dyslexia, limiting access to effective interventions. This study longitudinally examines whether kindergarten screenings of three metalinguistic skills—phonological, orthographic, and morphological awareness—predict …
Designing A Behavior-Supportive Literacy Block Using Ufli Phonics For First Grade Students With Behavioral Challenges, Julia Lynne Pugh
Designing A Behavior-Supportive Literacy Block Using Ufli Phonics For First Grade Students With Behavioral Challenges, Julia Lynne Pugh
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Students with behavioral challenges tend to struggle while engaging with structured academic instruction, particularly in foundational literacy blocks. In fact, in 2021, it was reported that 27.7% of children aged 3-17 struggle with a mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder. (Leeb et al., 2024) While programs such as UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) offer highly effective phonics instruction, these programs typically lack embedded support for individuals struggling with self-regulation, attention, and task persistence. As a result, these students are presented with a higher risk of falling behind in their reading skills. In this project, the author aims to develop a …

The Role Of Organizational Routines In Perpetuating Disparities Among African American Students In Secondary Advanced Academic Programs: A Mixed Methods Study, J. Nichelle Wimbush
Theses and Dissertations
The academic excellence gap, which refers to the disproportionalities of minority groups in advanced academic programs, presents challenges for educational leaders striving to provide access to equitable educational opportunities for all students. This study, guided by Charles Tilly’s opportunity hoarding, examines the systematic underrepresentation of African American students in advanced academic programs. Using a transformative mixed methods design, the researcher analyzes enrollment patterns, the intersectionality of race and gifted identification in K-5, and teacher and leader perceptions of how organizational routines influence student enrollment in advanced academic courses, grades 9-12, in a school district in West Central Georgia. Redacted student …
To Be Loved Is To Be Seen: Gazing As A Form Of Interpretation In The Turn Of The Screw, Yasmin Mezayek
To Be Loved Is To Be Seen: Gazing As A Form Of Interpretation In The Turn Of The Screw, Yasmin Mezayek
Theses and Dissertations
The heated discourse that would follow Henry James’s novella “The Turn of the Screw” centered on whether the ghosts were real or not. With Shoshana Felman’s groundbreaking article “Turning the Screw of Interpretation” a new-found focus on the ambiguities, as opposed to finding a singular, definitive meaning of the novella would usurp the Freudian and anti-Freudian arguments. With the governess’s sight being the main source of debate, reading the novella through the Lacanian lens of the Gaze, the Imaginary, and the Symbolic offer unprecedented explanations and arguments for the governess’s behavior. Given the contemporary shift to discussing the ambiguities of …

From Curiosity To Controversy: American Perception Of Japanese Immigrants, 1853-1924, Chloe Elizabeth Curbelo
From Curiosity To Controversy: American Perception Of Japanese Immigrants, 1853-1924, Chloe Elizabeth Curbelo
Theses and Dissertations
In the mid-nineteenth century, as the United States reached the Pacific through westward expansion, Asia emerged as a new stage for commerce and power. Japan, long isolated under the Tokugawa shogunate, became an object of American fascination when forced into relations. While early depictions cast Japan as an exotic yet uncivilized nation in need of Western guidance, Japan’s rapid modernization and the growing number of Japanese immigrants on the West Coast transformed curiosity into anxiety. My paper traces this evolution of perception from 1850 to 1924, arguing that shifting views of Japan and its people reflected America’s ethnocentric notions of …

Estrogen Receptor-Mediated Effects Of Resveratrol On Muscle Function, David Ayi-Bonte
Open Access Master's Theses
Artemis missions are set to send the next man and the first woman back to the moon and enable long-term missions on the lunar surface. However, exposure to lunar gravity has significant physiological effects characterized by loss of muscle mass, weakness and decreased bone density. Nutraceutical countermeasures such as Resveratrol (RSV), a naturally occurring polyphenol, have been identified as promising strategies to preserve musculoskeletal health; however, its pleiotropic effect hinders our ability to identify the primary cellular pathways through which it delivers its benefits. Furthermore, its efficacy in simulated lunar gravity is unknown. Based on the benefits observed with RSV …
Design And Control Of A Stroke Therapy Device, Hugh Elliott
Design And Control Of A Stroke Therapy Device, Hugh Elliott
Open Access Master's Theses
Stroke is a leading cause of physical disability around the world, and the likelihood of stroke increases as people live longer. The current number of physiotherapists is insufficient to meet the increasing demand for their services. As a result, there has been a focus on developing robotic devices that function similarly to traditional therapy, enabling multiple patients to be seen simultaneously. While many devices have been created and tested, most are expensive, complex, and require trained personnel for supervision, thereby limiting their outreach. This thesis presents the design and control of a low-cost stroke therapy device designed to promote upper …
“Democracy,” Usa, Marc Edelman
“Democracy,” Usa, Marc Edelman
Publications and Research
What does it mean to be an effective citizen in a democracy? Answering this question requires unpacking “democracy” and an analysis of institutions that systematically disempower and alienate citizens. This paper briefly examines the contributions of psychoanalysis to understanding democracy and authoritarianism. It scrutinizes U.S. governance institutions and points to democratic deficits and backsliding present even before Trump 1.0 and 2.0. These range from the Electoral College, the Senate, and the Supreme Court to the Federal Communications Commission. All contributed to institutionalizing minority rule and elite capture. Governance institutions failed to deliver what the American people tell opinion pollsters they …

Proxy Cap - La Lua Protector, Swift Sheng
Master's Projects
Inspired by the object capability model and sandbox, this project, Proxy Cap, introduces a new Lua access control model that improves the language’s security without sacrificing usability. Object capability is an unconventional but powerful security model. The security model closely observes the principle of least authority. Ambient authority, the omnipresent global environment, does not exist in the object capability computation world, and no resource is accessible unless explicitly assigned. Only connectivity begets connectivity. Lua is an extensible and high-performing scripting language based on ANSI C. The language is popular in many fields but faces security challenges. Lua has a non-traditional …
Moving Target Defense With Quantized Morphence: Defense Quantification Against Common Adversaries In Image And Time Series Problems, Rithika Dhamala
Moving Target Defense With Quantized Morphence: Defense Quantification Against Common Adversaries In Image And Time Series Problems, Rithika Dhamala
Master's Projects
In recent years, the vulnerability of deep learning models to adversarial attacks has emerged as a serious threat, particularly in domains where reliability and robustness are critical. This project builds upon the Morphence framework, a Moving Target Defense (MTD) strategy designed to counter adversarial threats by maintaining a dynamic pool of models and introducing randomness at inference time. While Morphence was originally developed for image classification tasks, this work not only reproduces the original architecture using MNIST and CIFAR-10 datasets but also extends the core principles to an entirely new domain: time series forecasting. The project proposes a unified defense …
Energy Considerations For Large Pre-Trained Neural Networks, Leo Mei
Energy Considerations For Large Pre-Trained Neural Networks, Leo Mei
Master's Projects
In recent years, neural network models have achieved phenomenal performance due to the increasing parameters and complexity of model architectures. However, these advancements come with high environmental costs as they require massive computational resources and consume substantial amounts of electricity, leading to high carbon emissions. Previous studies have demonstrated that substantial redundancies exist in large pre-trained models, and reducing these redundancies through compression would not compromise model performance. While these studies focused on retaining comparable model performance, the direct impact of compression on energy consumption when training models appears to have received little attention. By quantifying the energy usage associated …

Multimodal Deception Detection Via Audio-Text Fusion With Deep Learning And Asr, Xiangyi Li
Master's Projects
Emotion detection plays a crucial role in human-computer interaction, enabling machines to recognize and respond appropriately to human emotional states. This project explores a two-stage approach to emotion detection using multimodal data, first predicting dimensional values (Arousal, Valence, Dominance) from textual and audio inputs, then mapping these representations to discrete emotion categories. We compare this approach with direct categorical classification using transformer-based language models like BERT, RoBERTa, and DeBERTa for text processing, alongside various audio feature extraction methods, including MFCCs and spectrograms. Using the IEMOCAP dataset, we evaluate both approaches across text-only, audio-only, and multimodal configurations. Our findings reveal that …
Dynamic Pricing For Revenue Maximization In 5g Networks With Elastic Network Slicing And Reinforcement Learning, Naisheel Shah

Network slicing is a concept that enables a diverse array of network applications with lots of unique service requirements. For the scope of this research, we delve into elastic network slicing, which has a potential benefit for both the providers and users through cost-effective resource utilization. Dynamic pricing of these slice resources is a method for operators to realize the balance of different types of network slices by implicitly communicating the current network state to slice users. We have designed a custom pricing scheme using Deep Reinforcement Learning for elastic network slices that maximizes the revenue of slice providers while …

Link Failure Localization In Hierarchical, Multidomain Optical Networks, Martin Mihailov Bojinov
Master's Projects
Optical networks transport data encoded on light signals over optical fiber cables. Individual optical networks are managed by domain administrators, such as service providers, vendors, or regional bodies. Multidomain optical networking explores the possibility of enabling seamless data transmission across domain boundaries. In this project, we explore how we can perform network monitoring in a hierarchical multidomain optical network while preserving domain security and autonomy. This is done by allocating dedicated monitoring trails across various broker abstractions of our network topologies. We propose three heuristic functions that expedite trail selection. Of the three heuristics, our least monitored algorithm performs the …

Transforming Chatbot Text: A Sequence-To-Sequence Approach To Human-Like Text Generation, Natesh Reddy
Master's Projects
With the advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, the boundary between text written by a human and that created by AI has become blurred. This poses a threat to systems designed to detect AI-generated content. In this work, we adopt a novel strategy to adversarially transform GPT-generated text using sequence-to-sequence (Seq2Seq) models, to make the text more human-like. We concentrate on improving GPT-generated sentences by including significant linguistic, structural, and semantic components that are typical of human-authored text. The goal is to then use this transformed data to train a more robust detection model. Our experiments show …

Historically, there has been a great deal of interest in using basicmeasures of individual difference factors to predict future success in traditional sports. For instance, the National Football League (NFL) holds a scouting combine each year prior to the NFL draft during which a host of attributes about players are measured, from basic height and weight, to sprint speed, to jumping capacity, to strength. Even among an already highly selected group of individuals (i.e., individuals skilled enough to even be considered for the NFL), such measures have been seen to have some degree of utility in predicting future performance. The …

Ensuring accurate traffic perception and road safety in complex urban environments remains a significant challenge. Advanced traffic monitoring increasingly relies on deep learning, which requires large data volumes. However, existing datasets are often limited to CCTV video footage or focus on dynamic scenarios captured by sensors mounted on ego vehicles. This narrow perspective reduces the effectiveness of comprehensive traffic monitoring, particularly for LiDAR sensors, which typically capture only the vehicle's viewpoint and miss critical areas such as intersections and pedestrian crossings. To address these limitations, we propose a holistic strategy for rapid data collection in urban settings using simulated 3D …
Cultural Coordinates Of Credibility And Sticky Scripts: Womaning Versus Lawyering In The Indian Legal System, Bhumika Billa
Cultural Coordinates Of Credibility And Sticky Scripts: Womaning Versus Lawyering In The Indian Legal System, Bhumika Billa
Socio-Legal Review
Based on a multimodal and empirical analysis, the article presents Indian women (identifying) lawyers’ lived experiences of epistemic injustice at the sites of legal work in Delhi. The analysis brings a painting, a short film, and 15 semi-structured interviews in conversation with each other to understand women lawyers’ shared experiences of being perceived as “less credible,” and the strategies they have been adopting to assert credibility. The theoretical contribution can be captured by three key arguments. First, using Arpita Singh’s painting, ‘My Lollipop City: Gemini Rising, 2005,’ I argue that the Indian legal system has a “sense of” Delhi. …
