Minnesota School Boards Association Communications Internship, Anna Houston Jan 2025

Minnesota School Boards Association Communications Internship, Anna Houston

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

My internship at Minnesota School Boards Association allowed me to gain more experience within the communications field. This internship allowed me to see how current communications professionals are working within the non-profit sector that isn’t directly related to environmental matters. It was beneficial to learn from these experts while improving on my hard and soft skills within the communications field. This will help show future employers that I didn’t just study communications, but I actively practiced this work within the communications field. The Minnesota School Boards Association is a private, nonprofit organization founded in 1920 in St. Peter MN. The …

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This thesis presents an in-depth analysis and directorial approach to Jon Marans' play, The Temperamentals, which dramatizes the early struggles of the LGBTQ+ rights movement in 1950s America. The production focuses on the personal and political dynamics surrounding the formation of the Mattachine Society, one of the first sustained gay rights organizations in the United States, through the lives of its co-founders, Harry Hay and Rudi Gernreich. This analysis explores the relevance of the plays' themes in the contemporary socio-political landscape by exploring the interaction of personal identity, societal repression, and collective activism depicted in the play. These chapters detail …

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The existing literature on caregivers working in long-term care focuses on the challenges ranging from being overworked, mental stress, low wages, and abuse. However, little is known about the unique intersectional experiences of Black male caregivers, particularly regarding how race and gender shape their professional encounters, societal perceptions, and coping strategies. The present study analyzed unique stressors of Black male care givers in long term care using their personal experiences and how these stressors impact their mental health. The effects of societal expectations, client biases, and workplace stereotypes significantly affect Black male caregivers are also examined against the background that …

Hölderlin's Naturalism: Nature And Human Agency After Kant, Saurabh Saurendra Pal Jan 2025

Hölderlin's Naturalism: Nature And Human Agency After Kant, Saurabh Saurendra Pal

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on Friedrich Hölderlin’s engagement with human self-relating to the natural world in the wake of Kantian rethinking of the human being as a normative subject. While it has often been noted that following the Pantheism controversy of the 1780s, a generation of poets and thinkers looked towards Spinozistic monism to overcome the dualisms and limitations of Kant’s Copernican revolution, the relevance of this development to moral concerns has received less consideration. This study proposes that the recurrent theme of “unification with nature” in Hölderlin’s literary and theoretical writings signifies a yearning for moral community¬—rather than metaphysical union—with …

Trauma-Informed Judicial Practice Meets Therapeutic Jurisprudence: Compassionate Written Judgments In Child Protection Cases, Shelley Kierstead Jan 2025

Trauma-Informed Judicial Practice Meets Therapeutic Jurisprudence: Compassionate Written Judgments In Child Protection Cases, Shelley Kierstead

All Papers

Society has become acutely aware that trauma arises from many life events and manifests in a range of physical and psychological symptoms. The legal community is increasingly recognizing that clients living with trauma effects would be much better served with trauma-informed services. While much of the emerging literature in the legal field focuses on lawyers’ work, there is growing recognition that judges can also play a role in responding effectively to trauma.

In child protection cases, trauma frequently exists at different yet related levels – for the child who is the subject of protection proceedings, and for one or more …

The Ai-Copyright Trap, Carys Craig Jan 2025

The Ai-Copyright Trap, Carys Craig

All Papers

As AI tools proliferate, policy makers are increasingly being called upon to protect creators and the cultural industries from the extractive, exploitative, and even existential threats posed by generative AI. In the haste to act, however, they risk running headlong into the Copyright Trap: the mistaken conviction that copyright law is the best tool to support human creators and culture in our new technological reality, when in fact it is likely to do more harm than good. This is a trap in the sense that it may satisfy the wants of a small group of powerful stakeholders, but it will …

Social Conflict And Indigenous Consent In Mining: A Primer On Csr, Esg And Social Disclosures To Investors, Shin Imai Jan 2025

Social Conflict And Indigenous Consent In Mining: A Primer On Csr, Esg And Social Disclosures To Investors, Shin Imai

All Papers

The transnational corporate structure of mining companies makes it challenging to conduct independent investigations of allegations of social or environmental harm. A parent company can hide behind a multitude of subsidiaries in a multitude of jurisdictions to avoid liability. This article explores one way to bypass these corporate structures through the disclosure requirements of securities legislation. When a parent company fails to disclose social conflict or lack of Indigenous consent at a project, investors may be harmed when the stock price falls. This article describes six empirical studies, supported by extensive macro studies, which show that when social conflict or …

Freedom Of Peaceful Assembly Under Section 2(C) Of The Charter: A Call For Action, Jamie Cameron Jan 2025

Freedom Of Peaceful Assembly Under Section 2(C) Of The Charter: A Call For Action, Jamie Cameron

All Papers

“A Call for Action” builds on the author’s previous work on s.2(c) for the Rouleau Commission (“Freedom of Assembly and Section 2(c) of the Charter”; available on SSRN and Osgoode Digital Commons). There is no framework of legality under the Charter for the scope and limits of peaceful assembly, and this follow-up paper begins the task of filling that gap. It addresses the relationship between s.2(b) and s.2(c), critiquing the “factual matrix principle” for subsuming issues freedom of assembly into freedom of expression, and explaining that assembly is a distinctive collective entitlement that is spatial and performative in nature. …

Mailing It In: Due Process Requires Technology-Driven Safeguards In Public Benefits, Eric Lukoff Jan 2025

Mailing It In: Due Process Requires Technology-Driven Safeguards In Public Benefits, Eric Lukoff

Celebrating WCL Student Authors

Due process in safety net public benefit programs requires agencies to employ modern technology in providing notice that is reasonably likely to reach participants. The Supreme Court has held that due process is dependent on the time, place, and circumstances in which it operates. Scholars have further argued that due process is adaptable to changing facts and circumstances over time. Yet, mailed paper notices remain the standard in providing notice to participants in public benefit programs.

Living in poverty today looks significantly different than it did nearly fifty years ago at the time of Mathews v. Eldridge, where the Court …

Decoding Heterogeneity In Human Aging: Omic Biomarkers Of Age-Related Disorders, Yaroslav Markov Jan 2025

Decoding Heterogeneity In Human Aging: Omic Biomarkers Of Age-Related Disorders, Yaroslav Markov

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Biological aging unfolds along multiple heterogeneous trajectories shaped by both acquired molecular drift and inherited genetic variation. This dissertation investigates two complementary axes of aging heterogeneity: (1) stochastic, individually acquired epigenomic deviations; and (2) genotype-defined risk exemplified by the APOEε4 allele, the strongest genetic determinant of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

1) Stochastic Epigenetic Mutation Detection

We developed SEMdetectR, a robust R-based pipeline for identifying and quantifying stochastic epigenetic mutations (SEMs) -- rare, outlier CpG methylation events that accumulate idiosyncratically with age. Using technical replicates from three independent cohorts, we uncovered previous methodological flaws undermining SEM reliability and trained a machine …

This body of work is in conversation with scholars such as Kelly Lytle Hernández. Susie S. Porter, and Diana Montaño.

Sources include United States legislation, Spanish written newspapers and studies on sex work from México, the Elena Torres Cuéllar Archives, the Margaret Sanger …

Exploring Physicians/Physician Assistants Perspectives On The Challenges And Communication Approaches When Communicating With People With Aphasia, Alexandra M. Rogers Jan 2025

Exploring Physicians/Physician Assistants Perspectives On The Challenges And Communication Approaches When Communicating With People With Aphasia, Alexandra M. Rogers

SURF Posters 2025

Aphasia is an acquired language disorder that results from damage to the language areas of the brain, typically located within the left hemisphere. Individuals with aphasia often experience significant challenges while communicating with other individuals, including physicians and healthcare professionals. These barriers can ultimately lead to negative impacts on the quality of care, patient experiences, and overall health outcomes. The lack of consistent use of communication strategies as well as a general misunderstanding of aphasia by medical staff, further contributes to communication breakdowns. As a result, medical assessments can be misinterpreted, treatments may be delayed, and patients may feel less …

On The Applicability Of Generating Pathological Speech Data Using Large Language Models, Caroline Hopkins Jan 2025

On The Applicability Of Generating Pathological Speech Data Using Large Language Models, Caroline Hopkins

SURF Posters 2025

Pathological speech data is scarce in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP). Synthetic data, thus, is an appealing alternative. It extends the amount of usable data without the risk for privacy concerns that naturally occurring data may bring. In this work, a collection of Large-Language-Model-based methods for generating synthetic pathological speech data are studied. Human experts in SLP as judges delivered negative opinions on the quality of the synthetic data generated by a variety of prompt engineering methods. From the judgements, the resulting data was found to be weak in reflecting the characteristics of the target disorders. Further research will involve fine-tuning the …

Queer Life In Nineteenth-Century America: A Historical Literature Review, Vivian Wright Jan 2025

Queer Life In Nineteenth-Century America: A Historical Literature Review, Vivian Wright

SURF Posters 2025

In recent political discourses, queerness has often been treated as a modern phenomenon, and many people tend to think of queerness as a twentieth-century invention. Historians, however, have shown this to be false; an extensive amount of historical work details the lives of those who did not conform to sexual or gender norms in nineteenth-century America. This review surveys such works, analyzing nearly twenty different works spanning the course of nearly fifty years. By examining these works chronologically, the development of the field of queer history can be understood in the context of social and political developments occurring in the …

Morphology And Synaptic Connections Of A T7 Bipolar Cell In Mouse Retina, Lauren Groen Jan 2025

Morphology And Synaptic Connections Of A T7 Bipolar Cell In Mouse Retina, Lauren Groen

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This project will aim to identify ribbon outputs and post-synaptic partners of type 7 bipolar cells in a mouse retina. Using the software WebKnossos, a three-dimensional skeleton of three to four type 7 bipolar cells will be traced. Ribbon synapses will then be located along the cells' axon terminals, and the types of cells that are receiving the synaptic output will be identified. The goal of this project is to provide a better understanding of how type 7 bipolar cells interact with other neurons in the inner plexiform layer (IPL) of the retina.

U.S. And Russian Responses To The Syrian Civil War: A Comparative Analysis, Grace Dewitt Jan 2025

U.S. And Russian Responses To The Syrian Civil War: A Comparative Analysis, Grace Dewitt

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The Syrian Civil War was among the most devastating conflicts in the 21st century and was defined by the involvement of various international actors, including the United States (U.S.) and Russia. The Syrian conflict was sparked by the Arab Spring movement. The Asad regime, which controlled the Syrian government at the time of the Arab Spring, reacted violently to the civilian protests and calls for reform. This led to the formation of organized rebel groups, creating a complex and violent civil war. The U.S. and Russia, as well as other international actors such as Turkey and Iran, became involved in …

Dismembering The Final Girl: Examining The Shifting Trope In Contemporary Horror Films, Abby Divine Jan 2025

Dismembering The Final Girl: Examining The Shifting Trope In Contemporary Horror Films, Abby Divine

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This research explores gender representation in horror films as it moves away from representation shaped by the male gaze and, instead, showcases social values related to current feminist movements. While the horror genre is largely considered to be lacking complex messages or social commentary, many contemporary horror films actually utilize well-known tropes to cultivate a larger discussion on social issues. With the rise of the slasher film in the 1970s and 1980s, the character of the Final Girl was popularized. These final surviving female victims are usually defined by a constricting set of rules; however, newer trends in horror films …

College Students' Identity Differences In Offline And Online Learning Environment And Their Effects On Achievement Motivation, Sang-Soog Lee, Jinhee Kim, Seung Won Yu, Na Li

STEMPS Faculty Publications

The unprecedented evolution of educational technologies has transformed the learning landscape, creating distinct experiences in offline and online learning environments (OLE). However, little attention has been given to exploring students’ identities in the online learning context and how they can influence academic trajectories, limiting the development of a holistic understanding of the nature, effects, and areas of improvement in students’ identity formation in OLE. This study aims to investigate how students’ identity subcomponents differ among offline and OLE students via propensity score matching (PSM) in China, which allows us to find a doppelganger to estimate the counterfactual situation for making …

'God Loves The World' Documentary, Ilona Kitchen Jan 2025

'God Loves The World' Documentary, Ilona Kitchen

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The internet is a powerful place. People feel that they can share how they feel with no consequences. Hedviga Tkáčová (2021) argues that negative media portrayals of Christianity contribute to prejudice against Christian university students in Slovakia, which undermines social cohesion and highlights the need for greater support of religious diversity. From memes to viral videos, these digital interactions can feel like a personal attack, exposing how online spaces can betray the trust and faith of the Roman Catholic Church. As a Roman Catholic, I frequently encounter such issues when engaging with content in the media. In public settings, it …

Elongate Locomotors Show Consistent Torque Patterns Across Substrates, Spencer Bradford, Henry Astley Jan 2025

Elongate Locomotors Show Consistent Torque Patterns Across Substrates, Spencer Bradford, Henry Astley

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The four main movements found in snakes are understood mainly due to external study; however, muscular forces and resulting torques are poorly known. The main research objective is to study the torque production on different substrates using a snakebot. The study will give a rudimentary model for torque production on different substrates. It can then be compared against biological systems to understand snake movement at a muscular level. This study used a snakebot, allowing direct assessment of the current being run through each of its motors (proportional to torque). Data was then examined using a Principal Component Analysis test for …

Impact Of Tetrahydrocannabinol (Thc) On Daphnia Magna Heart Rate, Ashley Cosgrave Jan 2025

Impact Of Tetrahydrocannabinol (Thc) On Daphnia Magna Heart Rate, Ashley Cosgrave

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Marijuana (Cannabis) is currently federally illegal within the United States and classified as a Schedule I drug. This leaves a large research gap on the impacts of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) use. Daphnia magna are frequently used as a model organism for the human heart and toxicology screenings due to their myogenic heart, similarities in physiological pathways, and sensitivity to toxins. As such, in order to bridge the research gap and uncover potential use of Daphnia magna as a model organism for humans in regard to impact on heart rate, we hypothesized that if Daphnia magna possess CB1 receptors or an equivalent …
