Function has been always an important driver in architectural design. It is the request to generate form directly from purpose and utility. In 1896, Louis Sullivan projected that ‘form follows function’ and that the beauty of a building derives directly from its function and not from references of the built heritage. The assumption was that beauty would naturally derive from design once functional requirements are met. Thus, fitness for purpose equals beauty. In 1908, Adolf Loos even went so far as to ask for the total abandonment of decoration. In 1947, Mies van der Rohe made his paradigm shift, function …
Burnout In Board-Certified Behavior Analysts, Casey J. Kane
Burnout In Board-Certified Behavior Analysts, Casey J. Kane
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Burnout is a pervasive challenge among board-certified behavior analysts (BCBAs) due to the high performance demands and extensive workload associated with their roles. This study investigated the effectiveness of a self-advocacy intervention in mitigating burnout among BCBAs. Using a waitlist control design with repeated measures, nine BCBAs participated in an asynchronous intervention focused on communication, organization, and self-care strategies. Burnout levels were measured at baseline, post-waitlist, and post-intervention using the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory. Results showed a reduction in burnout levels, with improvements in disengagement and exhaustion scores across participants. Additionally, the intervention increased the frequency of behaviors associated with burnout …
Parasocial Relationships And Women’S Friendship Expectations, Perceptions, And Satisfaction, Renee N. Plaza
Parasocial Relationships And Women’S Friendship Expectations, Perceptions, And Satisfaction, Renee N. Plaza
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Television (TV) and film have increasingly become meaningful ways for people to connect, whether through discussing content, engaging with celebrities online, or forming imagined relationships with fictional characters. These one-sided connections are known as parasocial relationships (PSR). While prior research has mainly focused on how PSR influence romantic relationships—affecting ideals, expectations, perceptions, and satisfaction—the current study expands this examination to non-romantic relationships, specifically friendships.
The aim of this research is to explore how stronger non-romantic PSR might influence an individual's expectations, beliefs, perceptions, and overall satisfaction with their real-life friendships. Participants completed several assessments, including the Parasocial Relationship Measure, Relationship …

Evaluating Online Resources: Providing Parents With Reliable Emotional Intelligence Training Tools, Melissa Van Embden
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The rise of online resources has produced a shift in how parents seek guidance in fostering their child’s emotional intelligence (EI). Yet, the quality and accessibility of these resources remain largely unexamined. This study evaluates the top Google search results generated from six prompts designed to reflect the information-seeking behavior of parents looking to develop their child’s EI. Using an incognito browser, the first 20 links for each prompt were recorded, with Google Gemini AI-generated responses specifically marked. The researcher vetted the recorded links by utilizing a comprehensive checklist assessing professional credibility, communication and engagement features, and pricing. The Findings …

PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Research exploring the trends, motivations, and parental influences of screen use among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is limited. The purpose of this study was to address these gaps by examining screen time habits among children with ASD. Specifically, it explored the duration of screen time, screen-based activities, device ownership, parental mediation strategies, functional uses of screens, and caregiver perceptions of children’s screen time. Besides entertainment, children with ASD also use screens for emotional regulation, sensory seeking, accessing restricted interests, and communication, including Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices. The data for this study were collected using a quantitative …

The Role Of Teacher Engagement In Enhancing Children’S Organizational Skills: A School-Based Intervention Study, Brooke Goldsmith
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Executive functioning skills, including organization, time management, and planning (OTMP), are critical for an individual across the lifespan. Deficits in these skills can negatively impact academic achievement, social-emotional functioning, and future occupational opportunities and satisfaction. Organizational Skills Training (OST) interventions have been shown to improve OTMP skills in children, however, less is known about the role of teacher engagement in supporting these interventions. The current study examined the relationship between teacher engagement in a school-based Organizational Skills Training-Tier 2 program (OST-T2), and improvements in student organizational skills outcome. Secondary data were analyzed from 96 students in grades 3-6 and their …

Predictors Of Psychologists’ Self-Reported Knowledge And Self-Perceived Competence In Treating Transgender Clients, Tara N. Bennett
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
It has been widely recognized that transgender (trans) and gender nonconforming (TGNC) populations face significantly greater rates of depression, anxiety, substance use, and suicidality than the general population. Despite these risks, little research has analyzed how psychologists are prepared to provide culturally competent therapy to trans clients or what predicts competence in treating this population. This study aimed to identify what factors predict psychologists’ selfperceived knowledge and self-perceived competence in working with trans clients. The study’s secondary aim was to collect information about how psychologists receive education related to trans clients. This study employed a correlational research design to examine …

Pediatric Anxiety Disorders: Therapy Process Predictors Of Response To Cbt, Samantha Baker
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
CBT is moderately effective in the treatment of youth anxiety, yet there remains a sizeable number of youth who remain nonresponsive at posttreatment, and less than half achieve remission. Various patient-level variables have been examined concerning differential treatment outcomes for anxious youth, but fewer studies have examined therapy process variables. Using archival data, this study aimed to identify predictors of treatment response in youth with primary anxiety disorders who completed 16-weeks of CBT at a university-based clinic. Four samples of anxious youth, aged 7-17 were included in the analysis. Regression analyses revealed that increased skill acquisition and greater change in …
Testing The Effect Of Source And Environment On Native Seed Germination To Inform Seed-Based Restoration Of Grasslands, Brandon Clark
Testing The Effect Of Source And Environment On Native Seed Germination To Inform Seed-Based Restoration Of Grasslands, Brandon Clark
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Grasslands are one of the most endangered ecosystems on the planet, and they provide a variety of important ecosystem services that people rely on. Losses of grasslands can be mitigated through restoration. Seed-based restoration is a regularly used practice due to its practicality and cost-effectiveness. Planting non-local seed that may not be suitable for its destination environment can have consequences in plant establishment and subsequent restoration success. This experiment tested the response (final germination and germination rate) of seed from 11 perennial tallgrass species sourced from 3 different locations to different germination temperature conditions. Seeds from three sources of each …

The "Not Seen" Effect Of International Financial Centers: Innovation In The Global Financial Ecosystem, Charlotte Ku, Andrew P. Morriss
South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business
International Financial Centers (IFCs) are hubs of legal and financial innovation, developing specialized frameworks that facilitate cross-border investment, enhance global capital mobility, and support economic growth. Through jurisdictional competition, professional clustering, and adaptive regulatory frameworks, IFCs have pioneered legal structures that enable enterprises of all sizes to participate in the global economy. Using case studies of the International Business Company, the Limited Liability Company, the Protected Cell Company, and advances in trust law and applying the theoretical frameworks of social scientist Richard Florida and psychologist Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi, this article illustrates how IFCs serve as laboratories for financial experimentation, generating widely …
Evolutive Regime Assertion For The International Military Laws Of Outer Space: U.S. Legal Problems And Solutions Relating To The International Law Of Space Warfare, Matthew Lively
South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business
This article has three interrelated purposes. It 1) makes several novel contributions to and unite problematically disparate pieces of space law scholarship, 2) illustrates a disconnection between U.S. strategic space policies and the U.S. practice of military operations in outer space, 3) offers a new framework for international military space law, Evolutive Regime Assertion, that could remedy that connection and advance U.S. strategic interests while enhancing the safety of space operations for all the world. Evolutive Regime Assertion is mostly a prescriptive framework, but some of its elements are descriptive as well. In advancing the utility of the framework, this …

Navigating The Seas Of History In International Law, Valentina Vadi
South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business
Inquiries into questions of time, history, and international law have recently come to the fore. So far, however, many studies have only examined developments in international law from a temporally and thematically fragmented, brief, and narrow perspective. Due to international law’s growing normative and institutional fragmentation and emphasis on specific crises, episodes, and events, many analyses focus on transient trends and particular facets of international law. This study suggests an alternative to these constrained viewpoints: a thorough, multilayered, and broad perspective to questions of international law, drawing on Fernand Braudel’s tripartite theory of time.
Braudel’s theory of time provides valuable …

Background
Preterm birth is a highly stressful experience for both parents and infants. Parental participation in care enhances developmental outcomes, fosters parent-infant interactions and builds parental confidence. However, low parental adherence has always been a challenge in the successful implementation of intervention programs both in the NICU and at home. It is imperative to understand parents' perspectives and view the challenges that they experience through their lens while providing early intervention to their infants born preterm. This study is aimed at identifying new parents' challenges when implementing early intervention programs for their infants during the transition from hospital to home. …

Rehabilitation Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: Clinical assessment of gait typically consists of patients walking a few trials at various speeds while the clinician assesses performance. Unfortunately, there is no clear guidance on how gait changes across trials, leaving clinicians uncertain about the optimal number of trials needed to observe consistent (non-variable) performance. To address this issue, we examined gait performance from a large dataset of older adults who participated in a community-based comprehensive fall risk assessment. Methods: Community-dwelling, older adults (n = 340; 70.8 ± 7.4 years; 120 men, 220 women) performed gait trials under two conditions: preferred and maximum walking speed. …

A Pedagogical Survey Of Solo Multiple Percussion Literature, Austin Shoupe
A Pedagogical Survey Of Solo Multiple Percussion Literature, Austin Shoupe
Theses and Dissertations--Music
In the study of western classical percussion, there are three or four core instruments through which the necessary skills of the discipline are taught. The three universally accepted core instruments are snare drum, keyboard percussion, and timpani. Multiple Percussion is often considered as a fourth core instrument, given its significant presence in symphonic literature, musical theatre, chamber music, and solo repertoire. However, despite its importance to percussion performance, there are very few published pedagogical materials for multiple percussion. While there are etude books available, there are no comprehensive method books aimed at multiple percussion pedagogy.
To fill this gap in …
A Comparison Of Informal Choral Singing Experiences, Christopher Powell
A Comparison Of Informal Choral Singing Experiences, Christopher Powell
Theses and Dissertations--Music
A traditional choir relies on the interest and participation of the population in communal singing. However, drawing willing participants into a traditional choir program can often prove challenging to music educators, community choir directors, and leaders of religious music programs. One of the most prevalent informal singing groups in the USA is Sacred Harp. Sacred Harp “singings” have been around since the early years of The Sacred Harp itself. These singings occur regularly in multiple locations across the country and around the world. These events have an open atmosphere and, despite the mostly Christian material, have no expectation of a …
