The Political Culture Of Taxation, Steven M. Karceski, Steven Pfaff
Sociology Faculty Articles and Research
In My Tax Dollars: The Morality of Taxpaying in America, Ruth Braunstein explores the political culture of taxation in contemporary America. Calling our attention to the origins of contemporary tax debates, she shows how morality and American civil religion influence how citizens understand taxation, citizenship, and the proper scope of government. In this article, we review Braunstein's main arguments and the evidence she presents in support of them. We take stock of the book's theoretical frame work and the applicability of the concepts it borrows from the sociology of religion. For all there is to like about Braunstein's book, …
Hiring Trends In The Hotel Industry Post-Covid-19: Human Resource Professionals’ Perspectives, Anthony Liu
Hiring Trends In The Hotel Industry Post-Covid-19: Human Resource Professionals’ Perspectives, Anthony Liu
JWU Dissertations & Theses
The U.S. hotel industry experienced severe workforce disruption following the COVID-19 pandemic, including layoffs, employee exits, persistent labor shortages, and shifting employee expectations (Baum et al., 2020; Ghani et al., 2022; Kwok, 2022; Liu-Lastres et al., 2023). Although hotels increased wages, expanded scheduling flexibility, and improved benefits, many hotels continued to experience staffing shortages that affected recruitment, retention, operational efficiency, and service delivery (AHLA, 2024b; Aksoy et al., 2022; Ghani et al., 2022). Existing research has examined employee outcomes and organizational responses; however, limited empirical attention has been given to hotel HR professionals’ experiences and perspectives on post-pandemic hiring …

In Indonesia, lung cancer is the leading cause of death related to cancer, according to Global Cancer Observatory. Chemotherapy is the most common treatment since it works systemically and can prevent cancer cells from spreading to other organs. Cytotoxicity of chemotherapy can also put patients at high risk of experiencing adverse effects. This study aimed to evaluate the congruity of chemotherapy use with treatment recommendations and the profile of adverse effects, not only acute but also delayed adverse drug reactions. This prospective observational study involved 41 adult patients with lung cancer who received chemotherapy. Data is collected through patients’ medical …

Managing Virtual Work: An Integrative Framework For Human Resource Management, Tobias Blay, Fabian Jintae Froese, Sumita Raghuram, Bradford S. Bell, Agnes Bäker
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Virtual work has become a defining feature of contemporary organizations, yet Human Resource Management (HRM) scholarship lacks an integrated understanding of how it should be managed. We address this disconnect by shifting the focus from individual and team experiences to the organizational management of virtual work through HRM. We conceptualize virtual work and organize prior research along four dimensions: spatial, temporal, technological, and employment relationship. Building on this, we develop an integrative framework based on two axes, the degree of virtuality and the nature of the employment relationship, from which four forms of virtual work emerge and between which organizations …

Wnt proteins are lipid-modified morphogens fundamental in development and disease. During Wnt biogenesis, the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR)-like transporter Wntless (WLS) escorts lipidated Wnts from the endoplasmic reticulum to the plasma membrane, then transfers them to extracellular carriers, forming active and soluble morphogen-carrier complexes. To dissect the mechanisms involved, we solve cryo-EM structures of Wnt-bound WLS and unliganded WLS, and perform structure-guided functional experiments. Wnts engage WLS via three conserved hairpins, which are all required for Wnt trafficking to the cell surface and carrier-mediated secretion. Wnt release from cells is driven by dramatic conformational changes in the WLS transmembrane domain, reminiscent …

Trophic Structure Of Reef-Fish Assemblages In The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico Varies By Depth And Reef Type, Jessica L. Van Vaerenbergh
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Globally, marine ecosystems are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic stressors, leading to reef degradation, changes in reef-fish assemblages, and altered trophic structure. In this study, I investigated reef-fish underwater visual survey data collected over a decade (2013-2023) from paired natural and artificial reefs in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. I applied the novel Normalized Reef Status Index (NRSI) to evaluate how biomass was distributed across the three trophic categories (i.e., Lower Trophic Position (LTP; 2.0-2.9), Central Trophic Position (CTP; 3.0-3.9), and Upper Trophic Position (UTP; ≥4.0). This index is a metric to assess the ecological status of reef systems by investigating …

Natural Behavior Vs. Subjective Experience In Fish Welfare Assessments, Ronald G. Oldfield
Natural Behavior Vs. Subjective Experience In Fish Welfare Assessments, Ronald G. Oldfield
Animal Sentience
Several commentaries on the Oldfield & Bonano (2024) target article proposed that natural behavior should play a larger role in assessing the welfare of fishes in zoos and aquariums. However, the natural-behavior concept of animal welfare has been widely criticized because natural behaviors do not necessarily improve welfare, and unnatural behaviors do not necessarily reduce it. I review the three major concepts of animal welfare — physical health, natural behavior, and affect/feelings — and argue that behavior patterns, whether natural or otherwise, should be evaluated according to their effects on health and subjective experience. Using the affect/feelings concept and the …
Fast Radio Bursts From The Nonlinear Evolution Of Low Frequency Plasma Waves In The Magnetosphere Of Magnetars, Dominic Bernardi
Fast Radio Bursts From The Nonlinear Evolution Of Low Frequency Plasma Waves In The Magnetosphere Of Magnetars, Dominic Bernardi
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-duration radio bursts with applications as cosmic probes. However, their physical origins remain largely unknown. Magnetars are natural candidates for producing FRBs due to their compact size, extremely strong magnetic fields, and intrinsically dynamic nature. In this thesis, I develop a model for FRB production grounded in both a concrete triggering mechanism and a viable emission process. This process begins by launching low-frequency plasma waves into the magnetosphere. I show that energetic fast magnetosonic waves can naturally be produced in the magnetosphere, independent of how these waves are launched. Regardless of whether these waves are …

Enhancer Rna Transcription Near Segmentation Gene Enhancers Can Be Analyzed In Situ Using Fish, Christine Mau, Benjamin Schmid, Ezzat El-Sherif
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications
Enhancer RNAs (eRNAs) are non-coding transcripts produced at enhancer regions, which appear to be involved in transcriptional regulation. Up to date, these have been primarily investigated using labor- and cost-intensive genomic techniques. However, the precise mechanisms by which eRNA transcription or eRNA transcripts themselves mediate transcriptional regulation remain unclear. Here, we present a novel experimental approach that allows us to analyze characteristics of eRNA transcription in fixed and live whole Drosophila melanogaster embryos. We employ the anterior–posterior patterning genes as a model system to investigate the dynamics of eRNA expression, utilizing an imaging-based approach. We combined high-sensitivity fluorescence in situ …

Systems And Methods For Location-Verified Augmented Reality Tourism With Multi-Signal Presence Proof And Automated Creator Monetization, Olufemi Abioye
Defensive Publications Series
A web-delivered augmented-reality platform for location-based tourism is disclosed in which interactive story content is bound to real-world geographic locations and delivered through a standard web browser using WebXR, without installation of a native application. Physical presence at a location is established by a multi-signal verification engine that fuses geofence dwell detection, motion-trace analysis for spoofing detection, and cryptographic device attestation into a composite presence-confidence score; when the score exceeds a threshold, the system issues a signed completion token bound to a geofence hash and a time window to resist replay. Raw camera frames are retained on the user device, …

Mansoura Engineering Journal
Wastewater treatment is necessary for environmental conservation and combating water pollution. This study demonstrates real-time dissolved oxygen (DO) monitoring in constructed wetland treatment. The system would ensure an adequate supply of oxygen through automated water circulation whenever the level is below 4 mg/L, and shut down when it reaches the normal level. From experiments conducted, it was observed that within three automated circulation processes, it is possible to increase DO concentrations from 0.5 mg/L to 5.0 mg/L. Additionally, Total Dissolved Solids reduced from 1,380 ppm to 920 ppm. pH also stabilized from 8.38 to 7.9. In this system, data is …

Bridging Machine Learning And Climate Futures: A Framework For Explainable, Self-Directed (Agentic) Ai Models In Monitoring, Mitigation, And Governance Of Anthropogenic Climate Impacts, Vijayanandh Rajamanickam, Ketaki Kulkarni, Vishwanadham Mandala, Ozgur Kisi
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Environmental and societal damage due to anthropogenic climate change demands detection and mitigation strategies that are both effective and accountable. Machine Learning (ML) appears to offer a powerful set of tools but remains unexploited in these areas. A key barrier remains its poor ability to draw causal inferences about external systems, an essential requirement for meaningful continued monitoring, acting on, and shaping of the climate. Explainable, self-directed learned models operate by attributing environmental changes and deciding how best to model the resulting dynamics—they offer a natural solution. Recent developments in computational ecology, meteorology, and ML are combined to propose a …
