The Impact Of Structured Communication Check-Ins On Student Self-Direction And Work Completion In An Elementary School Resource Room, Tim Osburn
Education Masters Theses
The purpose of the project is to examine how structured communication check-ins may improve the self-direction and task completion of third, fourth, and fifth grade elementary students with IEPs. The intervention will consist of short, intentional check-ins at the beginning and end of each instructional session. During the opening check-in, one of the intervention students (3B, 4B, and 5B) will set a personal academic or behavioral goal for that session. At the end of the session, they will reflect on their progress, evaluate their effort, and discuss the strategies that either aided or impeded their success. Each check-in will last …
The Role Of Advocacy And Occupational Justice In Increasing The Accessibility Of Parks For Parents With Disabilities, Nathan Burke-Tan
The Role Of Advocacy And Occupational Justice In Increasing The Accessibility Of Parks For Parents With Disabilities, Nathan Burke-Tan
Doctoral Projects
The purpose of this doctoral capstone project was to address ongoing accessibility barriers experienced by adults with disabilities, particularly those in caregiving roles, in public parks and playgrounds in the greater San Diego region. Although many parks meet the minimum requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990), research shows that caregivers with disabilities continue to encounter obstacles that limit safe, meaningful participation in community spaces (Dalpra, 2022; Fernelius, 2017; Firkin et al., 2024; Movahed et al., 2023; Ogletree et al., 2020; Prellwitz & Skar, 2007). These persistent gaps indicate a need for stronger advocacy and clearer public awareness of …
Grounded In Experience: A Collaborative Approach To Resource Development For Adults With Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Morgan Kam
Doctoral Projects
Background: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a complex connective tissue disorder that significantly affects daily occupations, participation, and quality of life, yet early support for individuals pursuing or newly receiving a diagnosis remains limited. Occupational therapy (OT) is uniquely positioned to address these challenges through interventions that promote self-management and functional engagement.
Purpose: This project aimed to develop an experience- and evidence-informed educational resource for individuals undergoing or newly receiving an EDS diagnosis, while increasing awareness of OT’s role in managing this chronic, multisystemic condition.
Methods: A mixed-methods approach integrated qualitative insights from interviews, online support groups, and practitioner feedback. A …
Family-Level Impacts Of Equine-Assisted Occupational Therapy For Children With Disabilities: An Exploratory Mixed-Methods Pilot Study, Emily Canigiula
Family-Level Impacts Of Equine-Assisted Occupational Therapy For Children With Disabilities: An Exploratory Mixed-Methods Pilot Study, Emily Canigiula
Doctoral Projects
Equine-assisted occupational therapy (EAOT) has been shown to enhance functional, social, and quality-of-life outcomes for children with disabilities (McDaniel Peters & Wood, 2017; Prieto et al., 2022). While child-focused outcomes are well documented, significantly less is known about how EAOT participation may influence caregivers and the broader family unit, as existing research largely prioritizes individual outcomes over family experiences (Peters et al., 2017; Tan & Simmonds, 2018; Trzmiel et al., 2019; Xiao et al., 2023). Emerging qualitative studies suggest potential family-level impacts including family engagement, reduced parental stress, and enhanced feelings of pride, empowerment, and connection (Kalmback et al., 2020; …
Bridging Gaps With Occupational Therapy: The Unique Role Of Occupational Therapy In Women’S Day Shelters, Alex Sato
Doctoral Projects
Homelessness is a multifaceted, complex issue that we face as a society. Mainstream services provided to homeless or vulnerable populations tend to focus on housing and basic services. While these are essential and meaningful, literature suggests there is a lack in trauma and self-care support (Marzana et al., 2023; Milaney et al., 2020). Looking through an Occupational Therapy (OT) lens, there are a multitude of ways the profession can provide holistic care. Current OT service provision within this population most commonly focuses on obtaining and maintaining housing and addressing the survival occupations these individuals may be engaging in (Cunningham & …
Applying Occupational Empowerment Principles In A Life Skills Program For Unhoused Transitional-Aged Youth: Feasibility And Early Outcomes, Eriza Navarro
Doctoral Projects
The purpose of this occupational therapy doctoral capstone project was to address a gap in community-based services for unhoused transitional-aged youth (TAY) by promoting life skill acquisition and supporting participation in meaningful activities in order to enhance self-efficacy. This project aimed to design, implement, and evaluate a structured occupation-based life skills program that builds upon existing services at a local drop-in center. The program incorporated life skill education and activity-based, experiential interventions tailored to meet the needs and learning styles of the population. Methods included conducting a needs assessment, developing the program curriculum, and piloting the 6-week program consisting of …
Promoting Participation And Self-Efficacy Among Youth With Disabilities In Community-Based Vocational Education, Allison Hollender
Promoting Participation And Self-Efficacy Among Youth With Disabilities In Community-Based Vocational Education, Allison Hollender
Doctoral Projects
Occupational therapy, with its focus on participation, contextual adaptation, and strength-based practice, is uniquely suited to support the growth and inclusion of youth in transition (Angell et al., 2018; Cahill et al., 2020; Carroll et al., 2025). Research indicates that transitional-aged youth (TAY) with disabilities, ages 14-24, are less likely to graduate from high school, pursue postsecondary education, or live independently (BLS, 2024; Cheng & Shaewitz, 2022; Cook et al., 2015). These disparities are compounded by occupational deprivation, or limited opportunities for meaningful participation, which can negatively impact long-term self-efficacy and belonging (Arbesman & Logsdon, 2011; Cahill et al., 2020). …
From Silos To Synergies: How To Enhance Interdisciplinary Collaboration Among Graduate Students, Jennifer Jimenez
From Silos To Synergies: How To Enhance Interdisciplinary Collaboration Among Graduate Students, Jennifer Jimenez
Doctoral Projects
Interprofessional education (IPE) is essential for preparing collaborative healthcare practitioners, yet opportunities at San José State University (SJSU) have been limited, inconsistent, and largely dependent on individual faculty initiative. This capstone project aimed to strengthen IPE at SJSU by assessing institutional capacity and developing feasible, sustainable strategies to enhance exposure and participation across health-related programs. Guided by the Person–Environment–Occupation–Performance (PEOP) model and adult learning theory, the project combined a needs assessment, literature review, and partnership with the Healthy Development Community Clinic (HDCC) to create an instructor implementation guide and student introductory modules for HDCC service-learning onboarding. An IRB-approved mixed-methods faculty …
A Guide To Falls In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Sarah Ghione
A Guide To Falls In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Sarah Ghione
Doctoral Projects
Approximately one in four older adults experiences a fall each year in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2024b; Kakara et al., 2023). Among those residing in nursing homes for either short-term rehabilitation or long-term care, the risk of falls is doubled (Acker & Janssen, 2017; Shao et al., 2023). The purpose of this doctoral capstone project was to develop an educational resource aimed at enhancing staff education and fall prevention efforts within a single nursing home, supporting the facility’s goal of reducing fall rates. Methods included a needs assessment, observational experiences, resource development, and the …

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology
Acute radiation syndrome (ARS) occurs when hematopoietic or gastrointestinal cells are damaged by radiation exposure causing DNA damage to the bone marrow and gastrointestinal epithelial stem cell populations. In these highly proliferative cell types, DNA damage inhibits stem cell repopulation. In humans and animals, this inability to regenerate stem cells is lethal. Within this manuscript, several compounds, Amifostine, Captopril, Ciprofloxacin, PrC-210, 5-AED (5-androstene-3β,17β-diol), and 5-AET (5-androstene-3β,7β,17B-triol), are assessed for their ability to protect against ARS in an in vitro and/or in vivo setting. ARS was accomplished by irradiating mouse bone marrow cells or rat intestinal epithelial (IEC-6) cells in vitro …

Iatrogenic Femoral Arteriovenous Fistula After Leadless Pacemaker Implantation Treated With Balloon-Expandable Stent: A Report Of Three Cases, Cheuk Yin Lai, Timothy Ho Him, Mark Tk Tam, Guang-Ming Tan, Bryan P Yan
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Endovascular covered stenting is a minimally invasive option for treating iatrogenic femoral access site complications, including arteriovenous femoral fistula (AVF). Reports on AVF repair mainly concern small bore devices, but large bore devices such as leadless pacemakers post unique challenges. We present 3 cases of iatrogenic femoral AVF after large-bore, 27Fr access sheath insertion for leadless pacemaker implantation. Both underwent endovascular balloon-expandable covered stenting, with resolution of AVF and durable long-term results. As patients referred for leadless pacemaker implantations are often frail with co-morbidities, endovascular stenting is an appealing alternative to open surgical repair for AVF.

Examining Collaborative Healthcare For Substance Use Disorder: A Case Study Of Brigham And Women's Hospital Bridge Clinic, Megan Bidgood
Examining Collaborative Healthcare For Substance Use Disorder: A Case Study Of Brigham And Women's Hospital Bridge Clinic, Megan Bidgood
Psychology Honors Papers
Individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) are clinically underserved due to increased health and psychiatric comorbidities, structural barriers to treatment, stigma, and insufficient resources. This suggests that there is a need for an accessible and culturally competent treatment model. Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) Bridge Clinic is a multi-disciplinary, low threshold SUD treatment to promote collaborative healthcare and the transitioning of patients to longer-term care. The aim of the current study is to better understand personal accounts of patients and various clinical and non-clinical providers to optimize the BWH Bridge Clinic’s approach to treatment. Patients (N=5) and providers (N=6) participated …
Informative Jury Disagreement, Roy Baharad
Informative Jury Disagreement, Roy Baharad
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
The article introduces a counterintuitive argument, contending that jury disagreement on the defendant’s guilt—a nonunanimous conviction—may well provide a more informative signal, compared to consensus. Because stronger consensus implies higher likelihood of herding, it is shown that beyond some threshold, further accumulation of votes to convict would carry negligible epistemic contribution, barely enhancing the posterior probability of guilt. On the other hand, while dissenting votes provide a direct signal of innocence, they indicate that herding has not been involved in the decision-making process, hence increase the epistemic contribution of any vote generated by said process— including votes to convict—and may …
Bypassing Agency Adjudication, Brian Lipshutz
Bypassing Agency Adjudication, Brian Lipshutz
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
This Article examines the contested practice of bypassing agency adjudication to accelerate judicial review of non-final executive action. Parties typically challenge final action under the Administrative Procedure Act (APA). But parties may also seek an injunction or declaratory judgment with respect to a non-final action that violates a statute or the Constitution. Traditionally, such “ultra vires” review required a clearly unlawful action and an inadequate administrative remedy. But modern courts further limit it by applying three judicially developed timing doctrines—exhaustion, ripeness, and Thunder Basin.
This Article explains why the traditional ultra vires model— without the timing doctrines—should govern the bypassing …
Generative Ai Is Doomed, Eric Goldman
Generative Ai Is Doomed, Eric Goldman
Marquette Intellectual Property & Innovation Law Review
Eric Goldman delivered this talk as the 2024 Nies Lecture at Marquette University School of Law, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The talk compares the recent proliferation of generative AI with the Internet’s proliferation in the mid-1990s. In each case, it was clear that the technology would have revolutionary but uncertain impacts on society. However, the public sentiments toward the two innovations have differed radically. The Internet arrived during a period of widespread techno-optimism, creating a regulatory environment that fostered the Internet’s growth. Generative AI, in contrast, has arrived during widespread techno-pessimism and following decades of conditioning about the dangers of “AI.” …

My Body, My Voice: Defining Vocal Identity Rights To Combat Ai-Generated Deception, Kamran Moos
Marquette Intellectual Property & Innovation Law Review
Kamran Moos emphasizes the growing risk of nonconsensual AI-generated voice misappropriation and suggests a novel legal framework to address the issue. Moos explains how AI models have made voice replication quick and easy, in some cases requiring only a two-second voice clip to produce a convincing audio recording. These AI-generated recordings can be used to carry out identity theft, misinformation, and commercial exploitation. Moos argues that current legal frameworks, such as the right of publicity, misappropriation, and copyright law, are inadequate to protect individuals from AI-generated voice misappropriation. He advocates for a new legal framework rooted in copyright and property …

Characters In Copyright Law: Extraordinary Rules For Ordinary Content, Robert F. Helfing
Characters In Copyright Law: Extraordinary Rules For Ordinary Content, Robert F. Helfing
Marquette Intellectual Property & Innovation Law Review
Characters are a breed apart in copyright law. Only they have a special standard of creativity. Only they must have unique elements to qualify for protection. Only they are exempt from analysis as derivative works when they appear in multiple works, and only they are required to maintain consistent features in order to maintain protection previously earned. These and other idiosyncrasies do not follow naturally from precedent or statutory law, but operate heedless of and even contrary to legal authority.
This article shows that, after fifty years of undifferentiated treatment, the courts suddenly began to apply divergent rules to characters. …
The Role Of Antitrust In Innovation: Standard Essential Patents, Alexandra Perez
The Role Of Antitrust In Innovation: Standard Essential Patents, Alexandra Perez
Marquette Intellectual Property & Innovation Law Review
A Standard Essential Patent (SEP) is a patent that is chosen to streamline a chosen industry standard to promote economic growth and consumer satisfaction. Consumers interact with SEPs in almost everything they do in their daily life, from connecting to WIFI to charging any device. This is possible because the patent selection process requires patent owners to license their patents on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms (FRAND) upon selection. Yet, without proper regulation, this is easier said than done. Often SEP implementers are left with two options, entering exploitative agreements or rely on litigation to address unchecked anticompetitive behavior. This …
Can Miley Cyrus Really Buy Her Own Flowers: An Analysis Of Answer Songs In Relation To Fair Use, Emmeline Eike
Can Miley Cyrus Really Buy Her Own Flowers: An Analysis Of Answer Songs In Relation To Fair Use, Emmeline Eike
Marquette Intellectual Property & Innovation Law Review
September 16, 2024, Tempo Music Investments LLC filed a copyright infringement complaint against Miley Cyrus. The complaint is due to the striking similarities between Cyrus’s song, Flowers, and Bruno Mars’s song When I Was Your Man. Tempo Music attributes Cyrus’ success with Flowers in 2023 to When I Was Your Man’s existence and not purely from the song itself. In discussing this lawsuit, this comment explores how likely a fair use claim is to succeed, while also analyzing how the parody fair use defense is currently applied to songwriting. Additionally, it also discussed parodies vs. answer/response songs, specifically what the …
Virtual Court Proceedings And Their Effect On Criminal Defendants’ Rights, Hunter J. Phillips
Virtual Court Proceedings And Their Effect On Criminal Defendants’ Rights, Hunter J. Phillips
Marquette Intellectual Property & Innovation Law Review
This Comment examines whether implementing virtual evidentiary proceedings diminishes a criminal defendant’s Constitutional rights. Part One introduces the Confrontation Clause and judicial interpretations that shape its modern legal view.
Part One also introduces the importance of face-to-face testimony and how the Confrontation Clause is founded upon that principle. Part One concludes by offering psychological research that highlights the im-portance of face-to-face proceedings that allow for effective criminal proceedings. Part Two introduces legislation that hinders defendants’ Confrontation rights and critically analyzes that legislation. Part Three argues for the abandonment of virtual criminal proceedings and highlights other factors that should be considered …

Getting It “Right”: Educators’ Experiences With School Diversity In A Gentrifying Neighborhood, Jennifer B. Ayscue, Kfir Mordechay, Gage F. Matthews, Julie Whetzel
All Faculty Open Access Publications
Schools in gentrifying neighborhoods often experience demographic changes in enrollment. The purpose of this qualitative holistic case study is to describe how leaders and teachers in a diversifying elementary school in a gentrifying neighborhood perceive and experience diversity. Drawing on Turner’s value of diversity framework, we use inductive coding to analyze interviews and also use documents to inform our findings. Although Greenleaf was striving to be intentionally diverse, consensus did not exist about the meaning of “diversity” or the desired form of diversity. Challenges associated with decentering Whiteness and resisting upholding the racial contract existed as educators worked to establish …

The Mythic Seeds Of Human Rights, Joshua Mackenzie Luna
The Mythic Seeds Of Human Rights, Joshua Mackenzie Luna
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
In this thesis, I propose a causal relationship between ancient societies’ mythic corpuses and their law codes. I begin by presenting the histories and historiographies of ancient Israel and Mesopotamia to highlight important themes in their development. Then, I place their creation and flood myths side-by-side for comparison, yielding key differences in the way each group conceptualizes human form, value, and purpose. Once these key differences have been established, I compare each group’s set of slave laws to demonstrate how each law code remains philosophically consistent with its respective set of myths and diametrically opposed to the set from the …
Constructing Hamiltonians Using A Wannier Basis Set To Study Localized Electronic Interactions Using A Variational Quantum Eigensolver, Matthew D. Bruenning
Constructing Hamiltonians Using A Wannier Basis Set To Study Localized Electronic Interactions Using A Variational Quantum Eigensolver, Matthew D. Bruenning
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
In this study, I demonstrate how Wannier basis sets can be used to construct a tight binding Hamiltonian that is localized in real space. This Hamiltonian can then be studied using the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE), which is able to extract the minimized energy of the system. Unlike Bloch functions, Wannier functions are localized in real space, allowing each Hamiltonian element to represent orbital overlaps between neighboring atomic orbitals. This locality enables a substantial reduction in the Hamiltonian’s size by including only the orbital projections that contribute meaningfully to localized interaction energies, such as those involved in adsorption. As a …
Cgrp Modulation Of Intracellular Calcium Levels In Trigeminal Ganglion Neurons And Glia, Nicole M. Nalley
Cgrp Modulation Of Intracellular Calcium Levels In Trigeminal Ganglion Neurons And Glia, Nicole M. Nalley
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Elevated levels of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) are implicated in migraine and TMD pathology, but its effects on the excitability state of Aδ and C-fiber neurons and glia have not been investigated. The goal of this study was to determine changes mediated by CGRP on intracellular calcium levels in trigeminal ganglion neurons and glia in response to depolarizing stimulation. Intracellular calcium levels were determined in Aδ and C-fiber neurons of primary trigeminal ganglion cultures obtained from neonatal Sprague Dawley rats using Fura-2 and fluorescent microscopy. Cells were left untreated or preincubated for 2 hours with CGRP, then incubated with the …
